"CLARYYY!" Jocelyn and Clary heard Simon yell. Clary forgot about her whole conversation with her mom, and bolted to the kitchen.

"Simon, what's wro-" She stopped dead in her tracks. There he was, the mysterious man from the coffee shop, standing in the center of the room. She cocked her head to one side, and blinked, staring at him. "What are you doing in my-"

"CLARY, THAT WAS MY CAT!" Simon shouted hysterically.

Clary thought this through for a moment. What kind of creature was able to change forms from cat to iron-clad warrior? Not werewolves, not vampires, not fairies... That left warlocks and demons. But how could you tell the difference without seeing his whole body, tracing him up and down for a warlock's mark? She had so far only been able to see his face and hands. If only she could see beneath that armor...

"Again, I ask, why are you in my house?" she asked calmly, gaze unwavering from the man.

"I needed a place to stay."

"Why couldn't you go somewhere else?" she asked. There was no answer. She sighed. "Who are you, then?"

Mystery Man opened his mouth, but was interrupted by Simon. "He's a frigging cosplaying demon-warlock!"

Clary ignored the redundancy of his last word. "Cosplaying? Like Halloween? Who's he pretending to be?"

"Oh, come on, Clary!" Simon complained. "Loki? Thor's brother? From the MARVEL books? There was a bunch of these stupid cosplayers who got arrested last month while we were in Idris for trying to destroy New York!"

"But I'm actually-" the man started.

"Shut up, poser!" Simon said. "I don't care if you're a warlock or a demon or a friggin' whatever, you are not the real Loki."

"Am too!" Mystery Man said.

"Nu-uh!" Simon said. "He's not real!"

"Yes he is!" the man shouted. " And I am-"

"Both of you, shut up," Clary said with a sigh. "You"-she pointed to the man-"are going to go to talk to Magnus Bane with me. He's the only one I know who I can trust to force you to tell the truth, or tell me what the hell you are!"

"I'm Lo-"

"Shut up!" Clary said angrily. "You, Simon, are going to stay here, and chill. Luke, I want you in the backseat, making sure that Mr. Tall-Pants here behaves. And Mom, drive. I got shotgun."

Jocelyn smiled. "That's my girl," she said. "My stubborn Shadowhunter daughter."

"Shut it, Mom," Clary said weakly. "Just drive us to Magnus."
