Damarius POV:
Three hours later Damarius stood next to Artemis's bed, watching the slowly rise and fall of her chest. Several machines where hooked up to her, measuring her pulse and many other things he didn't understand. His aunt Jade and his uncle Roy stood on the other side of the bed, hands linked tightly together. The team hung further back, keeping a close eye on the former villains back.
Spirit was well aware of his aunts past. In fact, his second mission had been to bring her in. Big assignment for someone his age, but Artemis had trusted him and his ability's to help her out. But when his aunt saw Pulse, the hard core assassin figured out who she was quickly and the two had shared a heart to heart moment while fighting to the death. Cheshire had been defeated (but she didn't go down without a good fight) and brought back to the basement for questioning. When the young woman met the family and realized the life Artemis built from doing good, she swore to go clean. And so far she had been doing just that.
Jade and Roy met through Artemis, who set them up on a blind date (she is quite the matchmaker). They hit it off, literally, and 6 months later they were married. Artemis had been the only bridesmaid. Sapphire had been the flower girl, and Clay the ring bear though he was 1 1/2 at the time.
Damariuswas so caught up in his flashbacks he almost didn't notice a warm hand slipping into his own. Almost. He turned his head and caught sight of dirty blond curls falling loose over a dark grey uniform. Ella stared at Artemis, her green-blue eyes dark with worry and sadness.
"Whats wrong?"
He asked her softly. She turned to him, her eyes filling with tears.
"What if I didn't do enough? What if she dies? What if, what if I'm not strong enough to save her?"
Element muttered, a single tear streaking down her cheek. Spirit took his free hand and brought it up to her face, brushing away the tear.
"Listen."
He tilted her chin up so she would look at him.
"You did the best you could. Artemis is a fighter, she won't go down because that son of a bitches stupid robot. She'll make it. Besides, she's in the hands of the best healer I know."
Ella blushed, and then to his surprise, leaned in and brushed her lips to his cheek.
"Thanks D."
She let go of his hand and walked quietly out of the room to call her sister.
"So you got yourself a girlfriend. Nice kid, she's a totally babe for a 11 year old."
Damarius turned and gave the speedster a glare.
"Not funny West."
He growled. Then a weak voice spoke up from the bed.
"Wait, who's got a girlfriend now?"
Artemis's POV:
Everyone rushed over to her bed.
"Artemis!"
"Are you okay?"
"Oh course she not okay, she was shot!"
"Oh right."
"Idiot."
The build of noise was to much of Artemis. She scrunched up her face.
"Guys, shut up."
Artemis creaked open a eye to see Aqualad standing up, his calm and deep voice calming everyone in the room.
"Well look who grew a back bone while I was away."
She smiled weakly up at the young leader. He smirked.
"A lot has changed since you left. Besides, I began to date her."
He jabbed a webbed thumb towards Rocket.
"And what's that supposed to mean?"
Raquel frowned at him, to which he just grinned, wrapped a arm around her waist and kissed her forehead.
"I think I just woke up in a alternate dimension."
Pulse said after studying the couple for a minute.
"As awesome as that would be, no."
The voice of the resident speedster broke her thoughts.
"Hey Wally."
She grinned at him. Her eyes continued to flicker from person to person till they landed on one specific person. Or more like two.
"Roy! Jade! What are you doing here!"
Jade laughed softly at her astonished look.
"D called us and told us what happened. We were so worried we rushed over. We do live 5 blocks away you know."
"Remind me to lower D's punishment."
"For what!"
He cried. Artemis smirked at him.
"You fed Sapphire MY Oreos, got her on a sugar high, and put Robin in a dress, as funny as that was, it calls for serious punishment."
Damarius pouted and hung his head in shame. Artemis's face softened.
"How bad is it."
She asked, eyes lowering to the floor. Everyone exchanged looks.
"It's only a flesh wound, but its deep so you will have to stay in bed for the next few days."
M'gann spoke softly. Artemis sworn under her breath.
"This is going to be fun"
She said sarcastically. Everyone grinned and Artemis yawned.
"Hey, why don't we leave you alone so you can get some sleep?"
Zantanna suggested. Artemis nodded. Everyone started to fill out. Cheshire gave Pulse a kiss on the head, and Roy gave her hand a quick squeeze. The last person out was Wally. He turned to face her as he stood in the doorway.
"Do you need anything?"
He asked, concern laced though his voice. Artemis shrugged.
"Can you let Nelson and Spitfire in?"
Wally nodded and creaked open the door. Two black and brown blurs rushed in, jumped onto the bed, and processed to kiss the archer all over her face. Wally was defiantly not jealous.
"Down Boys! Down!"
She giggled as she lightly bated each dog so they would go down off the bed.
"You never struck me as a animal person."
Wally noted as he sat down next to her bed.
"Well, there was a lot you didn't try to learn about me."
She rubbed Spitfires red-brown muzzle. Wally watched her interact with the dogs for a few more minutes. Her long blond hair was lose and flowing. He began to twirl a lose strand around his finger. Artemis noticed, but decided it wasn't doing anyone harm so she let him be.
"Wow, you really have changed beautiful."
Artemis raised a dedicate eyebrow at him.
"What do you mean?"
He chuckled.
"Three years ago you would he de-handed anyone. Who dared touch your hair. Except for M'gann."
She shrugged.
"Having kids changes you. In some ways they make you tense up, and others they make you relax. But,"
Artemis added, a thoughtful look on her face
"they did have to tie me down to start to get me to relax."
They both laughed. The room got quite. Artemis closed her eyes and began to gently stroke Nelson Black fur.
"Why did you name him Nelson anyway."
Artemis cracked a eye open and looked at him. His sparkling leaf-green eyes had dark shadows underneath them, indicating he had been getting much sleep lately.
"Well, remember Kent Nelson?"
Wally groaned.
"How could I forget? He got me on the path of believing in magic. Zantanna helped."
"And how did she do that?"
Mischif sparkled in her eyes. Wally frowned.
"She, turnedmeintoafairy."
"What was that?"
Artemis laughed. Kid Flash sighed.
"She turned me into a fairy."
The archer gaped at him, before she began to laugh. And she laughed until her sides ached and she couldn't breath. Wally pouted.
"It's not funny!"
"Yes it is."
Wally scowled. Artemis wiped a tear out of her eye.
"Okay, okay. The kids named Spitfire after me because they thought the word described my personality."
All of a sudden Kent Nelson's words rang through Wally's head.
"find your own little spitfire. One that won't let you get away with nothing."
Could Artemis? Na.
Wally shook those thought out of his head.
"Well,"
He clapped his hands together.
"guess I have to let you sleep."
Artemis nodded, her eyelids getting very heavy. Her last sight was Wally speeding out of her room. Unknown to her, about one minute later Wally came back in. Spitfire was curled up on Artemis's chest, and Nelson was at Artemis's feet. Both dogs perked up when they saw Wally. Kid Flash placed a finger to his lips and shushed them, before tiptoeing over to Artemis's bed. He watched her sleep for a minute. He couldn't believe they got through one conversation without her calling him baywatch and beating him up. She was on drugs at the time, but Kid Flash still called it a step forward in there relationship. He brushed her scarlet bangs out of her face and pressing a gentle kiss to her forehead.
"Good Night."
Wally muttered to the sleeping beauty, before racing out of the room.
The first Spitfire moment of many I hope.
Next up: Shower time! But with both Spirit and Surge afraid of water, the team is in for a big surprise. Nothing deadly, I hope.
Surge: Awww.
Author: I didn't say they couldn't be injured though.
Surge: Yeah! Let's beat the s**t out of them!
Author: where did you learn that language?!
Surge: you
Author: okay. Just don't say it around your sister.
Artemis: GR35!
Author: Gotta run! Review!
Artemis: Get back here young lady! I mean it!
