The next two days passed by in an almost slow motion blur. Amy spent most of her time out at Bryce's farm, working with one of his horses, and most of her nights trying to get Ty to talk. It was all in earnest, that much Amy knew, since Ty hadn't uttered more than a few words since they had left Bryce's farm together two days earlier. It was early in the morning, the sun was barely up, and Amy found herself unable to sleep any longer. Whatever was bothering Ty, was bothering Amy because she didn't know how to help him if he didn't tell her what was wrong.
"Headed out to Bryce's again?" Jack asked casually. Though he typically kept his nose out of his granddaughter's love life, or at least he tried to, he hated to admit that Amy and Ty definitely seemed to be drifting apart. Though to be fair, Jack had noticed that Ty was drifting away from everyone.
Amy shrugged, as she sipped at her coffee. She knew that she was going to need an extra cup of her grandfather's coffee to keep her awake and moving this morning. Sleep seemed to be a thing of the past, because her jumbled up thoughts kept her up. "I'm not sure. We made some progress yesterday, but it wasn't much. I'm not sure that it's safe for that horse to be at Bryce's. Not with the business that he runs. That horse is likely to hurt someone, and I'd hate to see that happen."
Jack nodded, as he sat down across from Amy at the table. He sipped a bit of coffee from his mug, before broaching the sensitive subject of Ty. "Did something happen between you two?"
Amy's eyebrows shot up, not entirely sure where her grandfather's line of questioning was headed. "Me and Bryce?" Jack merely shrugged, before sipping more of his coffee. "No, grandpa. Why would you ask that?"
Jack sighed, "Because there is something wrong with that boy in there. He hasn't uttered more than a couple of words in the two days since you two visited Bryce's farm."
Amy nodded, it was the same argument she had with herself, over and over again. She went over everything that happened, and technically, yes they had a bit of an argument when Ty figured out where she was taking him and why, but he had been fine. Hell, he had been friendly with Bryce until he suddenly just freaked out. Amy's eyebrows pulled together for a moment, before it dawned on her. He had been fine until one of the horses cried out. She saw the look of fear, anger, and panic written on his features. She suddenly knew why Ty was acting the way he was, and she felt a tiny bubble of anger well up in her.
"Amy?" Jack called out, waving his hand in front of her face.
She offered Jack a small, sheepish smile. "Sorry, grandpa. Just thinking. Look, I think I'm going to try to drag Ty out of bed and get him to do something. Even if it's just to go out and get some fresh air."
Jack nodded, "I think it would do that boy a world of good."
Amy smiled softly at her grandfather. "I agree."
Ty groaned as Amy wheeled him toward Jack's truck. "I told you, I don't want to go anywhere."
Amy huffed, pulling his chair to a sudden stop and placing the brakes into place. "Do you understand that what you just said is most you've said to anyone in that house in two days?"
Ty glared at Amy, a smug smile on his face, "Do you understand that I have more to do, than talk to you? Do you realize that I have a lot to deal with, or do you not get that?"
Amy threw her hands up in frustration. "You know what, Ty, I do understand that. Believe me when I say, that this whole situation keeps me up at night. I lie in bed every single night thinking about how you wouldn't be in this predicament if it weren't for my mistake. That doesn't give you the right to shut me out. I know that you're just using this angry, smug front of yours to push me away, but guess what, Ty – it's not going to work. Not this time. I know that you remembered something about your accident the other day at Bryce's. Just... talk to me. Please." Amy knelt down in front of Ty. His face was turned away from her's, but she could see the faint track from one lone tear. It broke her heart to see him in so much pain. Slowly, Amy reached forward and grabbed a hold of one of his hands. She used her free hand to tilt his face toward her's. "I want to help you, Ty, but I can't do that if you keep pushing me away."
He sighed, "Why do I always want to spill my guts to you. It's just like when I'm alone with Jack."
Amy chuckled lightly, "I don't know, Ty. Maybe it's because you care about us – that you want to let us in. Don't fight it. I want you to let me in. I want to know everything."
Ty nodded, "You're right. I did remember something about the accident. At first it was like a flash. Like a slightly grainy still photograph. I wasn't able to make much sense out of it, at first. Then it hit me like a ton of bricks. It's not your fault, Amy. Don't ever blame yourself again. I did this to myself."
Amy's eyebrows shot up in curiosity. "What do you mean?"
"I heard your conversation with Lou the night before my accident." A hand flew to Amy's mouth, as her eyes closed tightly. She fought off tears that welled in her eyes. "Hey now, none of that. I told you not to blame yourself. It was my choice to do everything I did. You shouldn't feel bad about kissing Caleb. I was in a relationship – sort of. I don't even know why I got so mad about it. It wasn't fair, not with as accepting you were of me and Kit."
Amy shook her head. "I was never accepting of your relationship, Ty. Seeing you with her killed me, but you looked so happy and I was being so – finicky. I just – I wanted you to be happy, and it just seemed like every time we tried to get past you leaving, something always made it worse..." Ty placed two fingers against her lips.
"Amy, there was something that I figured out the day of my accident. Something that I have wanted to say to you for a while. Something that I was fairly certain you didn't want to hear from me..."
"Ty, I think I'm in love with you." Amy blurted out, interrupting Ty's speech.
A smile crossed his lips, "I wanted to say that first!" He whispered softly.
Amy smiled back, pulling herself into a half-crouched position, and placed her lips against Ty's. "Make me a promise." She said against his lips.
"Mmm. Anything." Almost immediately he regretted the words, fearful of what she might make him promise to."
"Stop pushing me away. Open up to me, don't keep me in the dark. If we're going to do this – be together. Then we need to be together. If you're angry at me, then say it. If you're scared, say so. I can't help you if you don't let me, Ty, and I want nothing more than to help you."
Ty smiled softly, "I will try, Amy. I can't promise a change overnight."
"That's all I ask. For you to try." She smiled back, before kissing him lightly once more. "Now, I have to head out to Bryce's again. You want to join me?"
Ty's eyes widened slightly, as he gripped Amy's hand. "I hate to say it, but I think I have an issue with horses."
"That's alright. You won't have to go near them, but I have to try to do something with this horse or Bryce is going to have to try and sale him. I'd hate to see him do that."
Ty nodded, "Alright. It would be nice to get out of the house."
Amy winked at Ty, "Good. I just have to go tell grandpa that we're leaving. Be back soon."
Ty sat back next to Bryce as Amy carefully forced the black Quarter-horse to lie down. Once she was sure that Midnight Lightning was in the correct position, she eyed Ty.
"Are you sure you don't want to try this, Ty? Bryce said it was very therapeutic."
Bryce chuckled, before turning towards Ty, "She doesn't give up easy does she?" he asked, before winking. "She isn't lying though, Ty. Riding a horse, even without being about to feel your legs, is the most therapeutic thing on this planet. Hell, even if you can feel your legs, it's therapeutic. There is just something special about being on a horse. The amount of trust between you and your horse. I don't know, I'm not good at explaining things, but I can say that it has helped a lot of my soldier friends. Not all of them had spinal injuries, some of them had really bad post-traumatic stress disorder, and just being around a horse just helped them stay calm and not necessarily overcome their PTSD, but it definitely helped."
Ty sighed, he looked between Amy and Bryce before settling on Midnight Lightning. His nose wrinkled up, as his chest clenched. Slowly he could feel the panic start to build, and his heart started to pound uncomfortably in his chest. Ty swallowed thickly, as his breathing increased.
"Amy, what's wrong with him?" Bryce called, moving out of the way, as Amy ran forward toward Ty.
"Hey. Ty, look at me. Focus on me, okay?" Amy spoke soothingly, as she cupped both of his cheeks between her hands. Her thumbs rubbed soothing circles against his thickening stubble."You're okay. Just breathe, Ty." Tears formed in Amy's eyes with each shaky breath that Ty took. She started to feel more and more useless, as Ty's body started to shake, and tears started to fall down his cheeks. "No one's going to hurt you, I swear, Ty. Just breath, close your eyes and breath." Amy pulled herself closer to him, as close as she get with his wheelchair in the way, and pulled his head to her shoulder. "I love you, Ty. Just focus on that. Focus on the fact that I love you, and that I will never let anyone or anything hurt you ever again."
Slowly she felt his breathing start to slow down, and his body stopped shaking. He peered up at her from her shoulder, a sad smile on his face. "I'm sorry. I don't know what came over me..."
Amy brushed her thumb against his cheek catching one errant tear, a soft smile on her face. "I think you had a panic attack. There is nothing wrong with that, Ty. You experienced something traumatic, and you started to remember it. Maybe bringing you out here – showing you the horse, maybe it was just too much for today. If you want, you can wait in the truck while I finish up here."
Ty shook his head, "No, I'll be alright... I think. I just, I live on a ranch, Amy. I live at Heartland, and you work with horses. I have to get over this, and I will."
Amy nodded her head, "Only if your sure."
Ty smiled softly, "I'm sure."
Amy pressed a kiss against his cheek, before standing back up. She looked at Bryce who just stared at her in shock. "How did you do that?"
Ty chuckled before Amy had the chance to speak, "If you think that's amazing, you should see her with horses."
Bryce just shook his head, before looking back at Ty. "Are you sure you're alright?"
Ty shrugged, "Have to be. I'm in love with a horse crazed girl."
Bryce chuckled lightly, "Yeah, sounds like you got a bit of problem there, buddy." He teased, before turning toward Amy. "I hate to say it, but if someone can't get on Midnight Lightning today with him lying on the ground, I'm going to have to sale him. I don't have time to wait for him to come around. Not when I can have other horses brought in that will do what I need them to do. I don't want to sale him, he's one of the first horses that I purchase when I started this business, but he isn't much use to me if he can't accommodate the people that I have coming through here."
Amy sighed, that wasn't what she wanted to hear. She knew that she needed more time, but she couldn't say with any certainty that she'd be able to get Midnight Lightning back to his old self at all, no matter how much time she spent working with him. "How about this, Bryce. You don't want to sale him, and I don't want to see you sale him. If he is still being stubborn today, I'll come back tomorrow with a trailer and take him back to Heartland to work with him. Give me a week or so to work with him, if I still can't get him back to his old self, then I'll help you find a good home for him."
Bryce nodded, "Sounds like a good plan."
Amy shook Bryce's hand, before walking back over to Midnight Lightning. "Alright, boy. Let's do this." She pulled on his bridle carefully, watching his legs as he made the move to lie down. "That's a good boy," she cooed softly at the horse. Once he was lying down, she made a move to climb onto the saddle that sat on his back. As soon as she sat down he whinnied shrilly, before rearing back. Amy fell off the saddle, her shoulder smacking hard against the packed dirt.
"Amy!" Ty called, his hands moving toward his wheels. Without a second thought he pushed himself forward and stared down at her. "Are you okay?"
Amy smiled, once she saw that Bryce had control of Midnight Lightning. "Yeah. A little sore, but so proud of you."
At her words, Ty looked around and saw how close he was to Midnight Lightning, and smiled a little proudly. "As long as you're okay."
Amy cringed as she sat down on the edge of Ty's bed. Her shoulder was throbbing with each move she made. It had taken a promise that if her pain got any worse that she'd go to the doctor, to keep her grandfather from driving to the emergency room.
"Still sore?" Ty's nose wrinkled. Amy's head nodded, as she made a move to scoot back toward the headboard of the bed. "Nope." Ty said suddenly, causing Amy to halt her movements and groan at the pain it caused her. "Come around here and sit right beside me."
Amy squeezed her eyes shut, as she turned to look at Ty. "Why?"
Ty sighed, "Because, I want to see your shoulder, now come."
Amy huffed, before standing up. "Yes, doctor."
Ty chuckled, "If I don't check up on you, Jack will. Do you want that? If he saw you grimacing this much, he'd drive you to the hospital himself, and you know it!"
Amy nodded softly, she couldn't argue his point. "Fine, but be gentle."
"Of course," Ty whispered as she sat down beside him.
Slowly, carefully, Ty peeled back Amy's long-sleeved flannel shirt, and grimaced for her as she pulled it down her arms until it was off. The tank top underneath the flannel shirt exposed her shoulder perfectly, and Ty's nose wrinkled. Her entire shoulder was purple and he definitely spotted some slight swelling right around her shoulder joint.
"Amy," he whispered, as he used his arms to push himself closer to her shoulder. "Are you sure you didn't dislocate this. It looks horrible."
"Gee thanks, Ty."
"You know what I meant," Ty said sternly. "It's swollen, Amy."
Amy pulled her flannel shirt back on, ignoring the pain in her shoulder as well as she could, before turning toward Ty. "It's fine, Ty. I'll take some time to let it heal. I told Bryce that I would pick up Midnight Lightning tomorrow, once I do that, I'll tell him to give me two weeks. One week will be my resting time, promise. Then I'll get to work on seeing if I can't figure out why that horse is bucking like he is."
Ty placed a soft kiss to Amy's shoulder, before laying back against the headboard. "Just promise me one thing."
Amy turned to look at him, "What's that?"
"That you'll be careful." The rest of his thought going unspoken, as he stared at his useless legs. He couldn't stand seeing Amy in the same predicament as he's in.
"I swear it, Ty." Amy whispered, before placing a kiss against his stubble cheek. "Now, if you don't mind, I am exhausted. I think I'm going to hit the hay."
Ty smiled, "Goodnight, Amy."
"Goodnight, Ty." Amy smiled as she pulled the door shut behind her. Before she made a move to walk to her room, she heard him whisper, I love you.
