A/N: This story has finally come to the end of it's journey. I hope you've all enjoyed it! I know I have!
Ty woke up to the sound of his alarm blaring in his ear. Groaning, he turned over and slapping the offending the device with his hand. Yawning, he pulled back his comforter before moving the edge of the bed. He let his legs hang over the edge for a moment, as he stared at them. He massaged his thigh muscle on both legs, before moving to stand up.
The therapy had taken time, and there had been many times that Ty had thought it impossible for him to ever walk again. Bryce had saved his life with the therapeutic horse-back riding. His therapist had explained to him that if it hadn't been for the horse-back riding that he was doing on the side, that his therapy would have taken much longer than it had as it were.
He wasn't quite a hundred percent, not yet. He was close, so close that his doctor had given him the okay to go ahead and resume his stable duties at Heartland. Which was why his exhausted body was up and about at seven in the morning.
Grabbing his clothes for the day, Ty made his way for the stairs. As much as Ty might have liked staying in the house … being so close to Amy, it was nice being back in the loft. The peace and quiet felt nice after so long being stuck in a loud house full of people.
"Ty!" Amy called up to him, as he took the stairs. She watched him closely, since she knew that he still wasn't comfortable with stairs.
"Hey, babe." Ty grinned as he made it to the landing and placed a kiss on Amy's cheek.
"Ty, I have a new client and I could really use your help, only if you're up to it?"
Ty shook his head, "Yeah, I can give you a hand. Can I take a shower first though?" He asked, holding up his change of clothes.
"Oh God, yes of course!" Amy giggled at her presumption. She was far too used to having Ty in the house and ready to go not long after she was ready.
"I'll be quick, swear." He kissed her cheek again.
Amy grinned as she carefully groomed the horse in the round pen. She had to admit that it was absolutely gorgeous. He had definitely been well taken care of, if his shiny brown coat had anything to say about it.
"He's beautiful." Ty called, as he pulled open the closed gate of the round pen.
Ty's brow furrowed slightly as he noticed that he and Amy weren't alone. Jack stood beside Lisa, who had her arm wrapped around Jack's waist. Lou stood between Tim and Mallory, all three smiling softly. Caleb stood beside Mallory, a weird look of pride filled Caleb's face as he watched Ty walk into the round pen and met Amy in the middle of it.
"What's going on?" Ty questioned softly.
"Everyone wanted to be here for you. We haven't had a chance to celebrate your accomplishment yet, Ty."
Tears filled Ty's eyes as he took a second to look back over the people that stood around the outside of the round pen. "So," Ty coughed awkwardly, as he attempted to keep the emotion out of his voice. "Who is this guy?"
Amy couldn't help but smile brightly as she spoke. "I suppose that's up to you."
Ty's eyebrows shot up, "What are you talking about, Amy?" He questioned again.
"Ty, this horse is our gift to you. For everything that you've achieved over the past year. You deserve it, plus I know how much you bonded with this guy while you were working with Bryce. Not too long after Bryce bought him, he asked me to work with him, get him ready to work with quadriplegics. I couldn't do that, knowing how much the two of you bonded … and how quickly you had bonded. So, I talked to grandpa about purchasing the horse from Bryce for you. For when you were ready and able to ride an untrained horse. He's yours, Ty. We are all so proud of you." Amy stepped forward, handed the reins to Ty, before kissing his lips. "I am so proud of you."
Ty couldn't fight back the tears this time, as a few ran down his cheeks. "I – uh – I don't know what to say. I do know this. I wouldn't be here, standing, right now if it weren't for each and every one of you. None of you would let me give up … or give in when I wanted you, and I will be forever grateful to you for that." Ty swiped his hand across his face before he continued. "I was waiting for the right time to say this, but I guess now is as good of a time as any. As soon as I finish my online high school classes … as soon as I get my high school diploma, I've made a decision about what I want to be … and who I want to be for the future." Ty sighed, his legs were growing a little tired from all the standing, but he continued on. "I thought my love of animals would die away because of the accident, and that thought scared me because since I've been here, at Heartland, there is only one thing I could see myself doing. So, I've decided that I'm going to school to become a veterinarian."
Amy smiles softly at Lou as she sets the dinner table. "Stew again?"
Lou shrugged her shoulders, "This day is all about Ty, and he did request it."
"Fine. I'll go let him know it's ready."
"Thanks." Lou paused, turning toward Amy. "Wait, Amy. Can I just say something?"
Amy quirked an eyebrow, "Never thought you were one to ask permission, but sure."
"I just want to tell you how proud I am of you. Even when things with Ty got hard, you never gave up on. Not even once. The amount of strength you showed over the past year has been amazing and awe-inspiring. I just wanted you to know how proud we are of you too."
Amy blushed slightly at the compliment. "I never could have given up on him. Even if I didn't blame myself for what happened, I cared about him too much to ever give up on him."
Lou merely shook her head, before hugging Amy, "That is what I'm talking about, right there. Dedication."
Amy pulled away, "Speaking of, I need to let Ty know that dinner's ready so he can take his pills."
Lou nodded as she watched Amy leave.
Once Amy's feet hit the yard, she sprinted toward the barn. She eased her way into the stables, and smiled. Ty was half asleep, his head lulled against the stable door of his new found horse.
"A boy and his horse." Amy said, before shaking Ty's shoulder. "It's kind of adorable, ya know."
Ty smiled sleepily up at Amy, "I thought I was always adorable."
Amy shrugged, "Meh. It comes and goes."
Ty chuckled, "Yeah, sure."
"So, did you give this handsome man a name yet?" Amy asked, as she patted the brown Quarter-Horse's nose.
Ty nodded, "Don't laugh."
Amy made a cross with her finger, "Cross my heart."
"Harley."
"Like the motorcycle?"
Ty shrugged, "Yeah. I figure it takes this entire journey full-circle."
As he spoke, Amy realized what he meant. "Harley Davidson. Cute."
Ty chuckled, "Well, yeah. I mean, I don't hold Davidson accountable for his actions. I mean, he is just a horse, it was my fault. Plus, I really do kind of like the name Harley."
Amy shook her head, "He's your horse. You can name him whatever you like." Amy kissed the top of Ty's head, "By the way, dinner is ready. Lou said you insisted on stew?"
"I can't help it, Amy. Lou's stew is addicting."
"It's good, but she makes it all the time."
"I know, but today is my day right? Plus, tomorrow is your day."
"God, don't remind me."
Ty's eyebrow wrinkled as he pulled Amy into his lap. "What's wrong with your birthday? As far as I can tell, your birth is definitely something to celebrate."
Amy's eyes drifted close, as she smiled. "That is both, the cheesiest and sweetest thing I've ever heard, Ty Borden."
Ty smiled crookedly, "What can I say, I try." he sighed when she refused to answer his question. "Look, I was going to wait till tomorrow to do this, but I think it's something you need today."
Ty helped Amy stand up, so that he could stand next to her. He grabbed her hand before pulling out a long, black box. "I've been saving up for this for a little while now. When I saw it in town, I knew that it was the perfect birthday present for you." He pulled the sliver bracelet from the box and hooked it around her wrist. "It's technically a charm bracelet, but I decided against getting you charms for it. Instead, I added some heart shaped clasps."
Amy grinned, "Ty this is beautiful."
"Open the clasps, Amy."
She nodded, before doing so. With each one she opened, held a picture of someone or something she held dear. Beneath the first one was a picture of her mother. The second one was a picture of Jack, followed by Lou, Tim, Spartan …. and finally a picture of Ty.
"It's not to presumptive of me to have included myself as something you care about, is it?"
"No, of course not!" Amy answered quickly, as her eyes caught the promise ring she wore on her left hand. "You mean the world to me, Ty. Never forget that."
"Never."
She leaned forward, pressing her lips against his. "I love you, Ty Borden."
"I guess it's a good thing that I love you too, Amy Fleming."
Together the two of them turned and headed toward the house. Things weren't perfect, and Ty knew that it was impossible to think that they ever would be. Nothing in life is ever fully perfect, but his life at Heartland was as close as perfect that Ty would ever get, and he knew that. He wasn't about to take the life he had made for himself for granted ever again.
