"Jody, Jody!" The old woman cried as she ran across the roof. She had come in vie the hospital's main entrance and successfully avoided Nick and Zoe. She fell to her knee's next to Jody and began to shake her. "Jody!" She shouted. Slowly, and tiredly, Jody opened her eyes.
"Granny." She said, sitting up to hug the old woman.
"Oh thank God! You just scared ten years off of my life!" She said, laughing slightly and happily hugging Jody back.
"Sorry, I was just tired." She said.
"Hmm, has anyone ever explained the concept if 'a chill' to you? Most children get them from lying and sitting on the cold tarmac." She said.
"Yes Granny, I know what a chill is. I'll get up, calm down." She said. "Come over and we'll sit on this thing." She said, pointing to a concrete block. It could still potentially cause a chill, but it was better than where they were.
"Hold on." Her Gran replied. She removed her coat and lay it on the block for them to sit on. "Now we can sit." So they did. Silence fell for a while. "So tell me what this is all about." She said.
"Um... Well. We got a court date. I'm petrified of seeing them again. They'll bring back the nightmares, I know it. Either way, I was in my room, thinking about it. I started to panic and I couldn't stop it, thats when it happened."
"The self harm?" Jody nodded.
"I didn't mean it, I'm sorry."
"Don't be, I'm not angry, in fact, I quite understand. Jody sweetheart, these men can only cause you trauma if you let them. I have faith in you, I think you will be absolutely fine." She said.
"Thanks gran. Um, you didn't tell mum and dad about us being up here, did you?" She said.
"No, but we'll have to tell them soon. They'll be going out of their minds with worry by now." Just as she was saying this, as though it had been rehearsed and timed perfectly, Nick and and Zoe burst out of the door and onto the roof.
"There you are!" Zoe shouted.
"Jody! What were you thinking!" Nick bellowed. "And you! What are you doing here and why didn't you call us when you found her!" He screamed at Elizabeth.
"I didn't phone you because her reason for not wanting you is actually completely fair and understandable, but in order to make sure she wasn't alone, I came down, or in this case, up," she said, gesturing to the roof. "And made sure she was okay instead." She finished.
"What was this infamous reason then!" Nick screamed. Tired of the fighting and feeling rather nauseous, Jody jumped up and screamed back.
"Because I couldn't stand all the looks of sheer pity you were both giving me!" She yelled, before running back to the door back to the hospital and heading down the stairs.
"Quickly Nick! Come on she's not fit for this!" Zoe shouted and the two of them, guiltily, chased her back to the ward, closely followed by Zoe's mum, Elizabeth. When they got there, they discovered that she had managed to reach the ward, however, she had fainted and was lying on the floor near her bed.
"Oh God! Can we get some help over here!" Zoe yelled, as she and Nick rushed over to Jody's side. In seconds, they were joined by the ward staff who did all of the necessary checks, moved Jody onto the bed and put up a new litre of saline. The fainting spell was confirmed to be caused through exercising with a low blood pressure and the was put on fifteen minute obs. The ward staff went back to their jobs and silence fell around Jody's bed. A few moments passed and she opened her eyes. No one said anything, Jody just rolled over onto her side, shut her eyes again and drifted off into a deep sleep.
When she woke up, Jody found herself still in the ward, still hooked up to all of the monitors, she still had a drip in her arm and she was still fed up. She noticed that Nick and Zoe were not at her bedside, however, Elizabeth was there with Eilidh.
"Hi granny." She said.
"Hello sweetheart. Sleep well?"
"Mm. Where've mum and dad gone?" She asked.
"Lunch I think. Would you like a cuddle with your sister?" She asked, trying hard to cheer her up. Jody nodded.
"Love one." She said, smiling. "Hello sweetheart!" She said, as she. Took Eilidh out of Elizabeth's arms. She pulled her knee's up to her chest and lent Eilidh against her thigh's fir extra support. "Miss me?" The infant smiled, glad to see Jody again. "Haha I know you did. My gosh you seem to be getting cuter my dear! I didn't think that was even possible!" For a while, she sat with her sister. She tickled her, played with her, made her laugh. She blew raspberries on her stomach and hoisted her up above her head in fun. Nick and Zoe walked in to see both of their girls playing, and laughing, and they found themselves overwhelmed with joy at the sight.
"Hello Jody." Nick said, quite quietly.
"Hi." She replied, without looking up from Eilidh's face.
"You're mother and I would like to apologise for how we made you feel yesterday. We didn't mean it." He said. Jody sighed and faced them.
"I know you didn't." She said.
