I couldn't see what was happening of course, but I was 101% certain that Adrian was carrying me somewhere and he was running. Fast. Really fast I think.
"Where are we going?" I yelled. I felt like I had to raise my voice since I could barely hear myself over the rush of wind.
"Into the woods," he said. "Up on the mountain. That's the only place where it's sunny. You've never seen the sun before, right?"
"No," I replied. He wasn't yelling so maybe his ears were more sensitive than mine or something. May as well not irritate him with unnecessary volume. "The only time I could actually seesomething was last night and the sun's not out at night."
Adrian laughed and shook his head slightly. "How do you feel?"
"Cold," I admitted, collecting my thoughts. "I've noticed it before, but you're freezing!"
"Yep. Just another vampire thing," Adrian said.
"Will you answer any questions about vampires?"
"If you want."
I rested my head against his shoulder, tired of keeping it up myself. "Aren't I heavy?"
"Super strength and super speed is in the whole vampire package," Adrian chuckled. "You want to see how fast we're going?"
"I'd rather not," I admitted. "It feels scary enough without being able to see anything."
"You ever been on a roller coaster?"
I snorted. "As if! I've never been within a mile of an amusement park."
"Well this is how it feels," Adrian said. "Hang on, we're almost there."
No sooner had he said this and then in the next second I felt him lowering me down to sit on...a rock? I felt the rough surface with my hand and concluded that it was definitely a rock. More of a boulder actually.
"We're here!" Adrian announced.
"How long did that take?"
"Five minutes maximum with the way I was running," Adrian said. He sounded like he was bragging.
I slid down and then found myself on the soft grass. Suddenly I noticed that to my left was where the sun was. When I turned my head in that direction the usual blackness turned into a dark brown colour.
"You know where the sun is?" Adrian asked.
Now it was my turn to joke around a bit. "Even someone who's blind can figure out that much."
"You won't be blind for much longer. Close your eyes."
"What's the point then?"
"I want you to have a sort of 'waking up' experience. It's the awakening of your sight; the sight that you truly deserve."
I didn't even bother to roll my eyes (mostly because I didn't know if I would succeed), and then I closed my eyes. Finally he told me to open them.
I did and once again I was taken back by what I saw. I looked down first to my own hands and to what I was wearing. I recognized my clothes by how they felt, but they actually didn't look back either. I couldn't define the colours, but I knew that I was wearing jeans and a blouse.
I looked at the grass and the colour was altogether new for me. The trees, and even the rocks behind me were like heaven to my eyes. Finally I looked up at the sun itself and then I had to close my eyes. It was so...bright. And that was coming from a girl who didn't even know what bright was. But then again I was so used to seeing only the dark so that's probably why it hurt.
"Staring at the sun is how some people can get blind," Adrian said and I turned towards him. Again he took my breath away. Just by looking I could define that he was handsome. His skin was even paler than mine and his features...were just something I couldn't describe. His hair appeared a lighter brown in the sunlight and as for his eyes...they were almost like a combination of the sun's colour along with brown but it was a colour that I couldn't quite name.
He noticed me staring and then he cracked a smile. A beautiful smile. "Like what you see?"
I nodded honestly. "I've never even seen what 'handsome' looks like, but I'm sure you're it."
"It is a bit unfair," he sighed dramatically.
"What is?"
"You've seen me before you've even seen yourself."
At this I bit my bottom lip nervously. "I'm not so sure that I want to."
"Why not?"
"What if...I don't like what I see? What will I think of myself afterwards?"
Adrian reached out and took hold of my hand. "You're beautiful Charlotte. I'm sure you'll like what you see."
And then he stood up and likewise pulled me up. It was different looking at him from this angle. I never guessed that just standing up could make such a difference.
"Where are we going?" I asked as he started leading me down the hill of the clearing we were in.
"There's a stream of clear water further down," Adrian said. "It won't be as good as a mirror, but at least you'll be able to see your reflection."
"I'd rather be blind!" I exclaimed and the I pulled my hand back, surprising him. I sat back down on the grass and buried my head in my lap. "I'm not ready to see what I look like."
Adrian sighed and sat down next to me. "It's ok. We'll wait. We've got a long way ahead of us."
I nodded. "Thanks."
Adrian leaned back and lay down on the grass. "So, any questions you got about vampires?"
Admittedly I was curious about him and the Cullens. I was also curious about Seth and the werewolves. Hopefully they would both answer my questions.
"Ok, so let's start with this whole 'powers' thing you were telling me about. Besides restoring senses or taking them away, super speed and strength, what other powers to vampires have?"
"Well..." Adrian mused. "We're pretty invincible I guess you could say. For example even if I were to try suicide in any number of ways it wouldn't work. Poison has no effect on vampires, or drowning, or weapons, and definitely not throwing ourselves off a cliff or anything. There's only one way I think, but let's not get into that."
I nodded. Ok, we'll save that for another time.
"What else?"
"For restoring senses, that's a special power only I have specifically," Adrian said. "There are some special individual powers that some vampires have."
"Like what?"
"Edward for instance. He can read people's minds."
I gasped. "Edward?!"
"Yeah, why?" Adrian asked, confused.
I gulped and I think I may've even blushed a bit because my cheeks felt hot. So that was why...Edward always said something before anyone else and how he always seemed to know...well, everything! I was embarrassed to think at what he might already know...
"No reason. Who else?"
"Bella's power is a special one. She can form a mental shield that protects others from other vampire powers working on them. Edward can't read her mind unless she allows him into her shield."
"That sounds useful."
"It is, or so I've been told. Then there's Jasper who can control emotions, and Renesmee, you know, Edward's daughter and Jacob's...er...wife and imprintee in case you're wondering, who can communicate her thoughts through touch to just about anyone. And then there's Alice who I think's got the best power. She can see the future."
"Really?"
"Yeah. That's how we know when to be prepared for anything. But it's a subjective view because the future can always change or something like that. We don't talk about it much I guess, because we don't need to."
"Did she see anything about me?"
Adrian breathed in deeply. "If she did, then she didn't tell me. I bet she knew about how your operation wasn't going to work, but she didn't tell me about that. I only found out when you did, but it seemed to me at that time that Edward was taking the whole thing pretty well. I bet he also knew about it."
I wondered if Adrian was bitter about that towards his family. I didn't hold anything against Alice for Edward, but I felt as if Adrian did. Sighing, I stood up.
"How long have we been out here?"
"Not long. Why?"
I looked around me and then closed my eyes, strangely ready to leave my sight behind. It was making me uncomfortable, and I guess it would if I really wasn't used to it. Or maybe...being alone with Adrian and having a tense atmosphere was what made me want to leave.
"I have to get back for lunch," I said. "Lizzy and Joseph will be worried."
Adrian took my hand in his and then said that it was ok to open my eyes and I did. No change from the blackness from before. I almost welcoming it. Sometimes...feeling was better than seeing, wasn't it?
"Ok, take me home," I said.
Adrian hoisted me up onto his back and then began running.
Just before he picked me up though, I could have sworn that I heard a rustling somewhere nearby. No doubt Adrian heard it too, but just chose not to acknowledge it. I guess that meant I shouldn't either.
I'm sorry it's taken me so long to update, but I gave a longer chapter than usual as a mini form of apology. I just had writer's block and my life's been busier and whatnot so yeah.
Anyways, enjoy the chapter!~
