It might sound weird, but it's the truth. As soon as Adrian dropped me off at home and then left, I felt like I wanted to leave again. Of course it was an excuse saying that I had to get to lunch. I didn't really want to be with Lizzy or Joseph or even Mary at that moment. All I wanted was...
Seth.
I missed Seth. I missed him more than I think I allowed myself to admit. I wanted to talk to him. Earlier today I felt like what I was doing with Adrian was wrong, but of course I wouldn't be able to stop it. I had no reason to and besides, a part of me still wanted to see. I knew I wanted to see Seth for sure, but I couldn't if it was Adrian was giving me my sight. He said that he'd give it to me permanently, but I had a feeling that he couldn't really give it to me unless he was nearby. I guess I just wasn't meant to see on my own then. That was all it meant. In fact what peeved me off at that moment was that I'd technically seen Adrian's face more than Seth's. I didn't like that thought.
I made my way to my room and sat down on my unmade bed. I guess I overlooked it earlier that morning in all the excitement. I lay down and then heard another knock at the door.
Probably Adrian, I thought to myself. He probably forgot something.
I got up and walked over to the door, opening it without hesitation. It wasn't like I could see who it was anyone so I should've taken a precaution, but Forks was such a small town that everybody could know everybody if they spent enough time there. I could never have expected that a particular individual would come to visit me.
Edward.
He greeted me casually and then asked if me might be 'permitted' inside. I nodded and then took him to the kitchen. It felt almost like deja vu with having a vampire in the house and directly in the kitchen at that.
"Yes?" I asked, taking a seat across from him (or so I assumed). "Is something wrong?"
"No," he said, trying to keep his tone light but there was a hint of seriousness behind it. "I was just wondering if you'd seen Adrian lately."
Huh? He was looking for Adrian? Why?
Reading my mind as usual, he said "No one's seen him since he went to pick you up last night and we were worried about him."
Why didn't he come home? Did that fight with Seth really upset him?
I was being a bit careless with my thoughts. I could tell just by the feel of the room that Edward had gotten a part of his answer. I made a better effort to keep even my thoughts under control.
"I don't know where he is," I said, not exactly lying. I didn't know where he was at that moment anyway.
Edward stiffened just a bit. "Charlotte, did something happen?"
"Happen? What would happen?" I asked, keeping my tone just as even as his. Who would've thought that I was capable of that? Maybe not seeing the expression on his face helped.
Edward shifted his position. "I'm sure I don't know...yet. Charlotte, Adrian is a prized member of our family and if anything happened to him then we've got a right to know."
He was getting a bit frustrated. I could tell. He may be able to read minds, but I was doing surprisingly well on not thinking about anything. To keep my mind occupied, I just kept repeating his words in my head and then formulating my words. He knew what I was going to say before I said it, but it didn't help him get any answers. It wasn't easy since the mind is a hard thing to control, but I wasn't sure if it was right that Edward should know about everything just yet. This didn't really involve him after all.
"He came to pick me up," I said, giving him the exact time in my head just so that he didn't get suspicious. Around midnight was it? "But then Seth brought me home." We did meet up but I told him that it wasn't necessary for him to take me home. Seth's more responsible than he thinks.
"Did something happen inbetween that?" Edward asked. "Adrian wouldn't leave in the middle of something after all."
"I don't think so. I was asleep through the car ride."
"So you didn't talk to Adrian?"
"No."
I already sensed my mistake. My mind and my words were contradictory and no doubt Edward took into account what I was thinking rather than what I was saying. I made up a lie quickly. I did talk to him, but it was only to tell him that he didn't need to come all that way just to pick me up. I felt guilty, but Seth was already headed for the main road so it was too late to switch cars at that point.
"Is that all?" Edward asked. I felt like he was asking this from my mind rather than from my voice.
"Yes." Yes.
Edward was definitely dissatisfied with his answer, but he didn't press any further.
"In that case I'm sorry to have impose on you. You'll excuse me." And then he stood and left before I could even stand up. I listened carefully and didn't dare to even think again until I heard his car pulling away. Breathing a sigh of relief, I got to my feet and went into the living room to turn on the radio. I needed to get my mind off all of this.
I turned it on and a soft jazz song began playing. I hummed around to it and then I heard someone humming along with me. I quickly turned off the radio alarmed, but just as I was about to take my hand off the knob I felt a warm hand grasp it.
Seth.
I smiled right away at the familiar touch. "Seth?"
"Yeah," he answered, his voice sounding very close to me. I stood up to greet him, but he slowly placed his hand on my shoulder, stopping me. Then in one swift movement he picked me up in his arms and sat down on a rocking chair nearby, just rocking me back and forth almost like a baby.
"Miss me?" he asked almost hopefully.
"Yeah," I breathed, more than just content to feel his warmth again. His warmth, his scent...they were all like heaven to me. I didn't hesitate to lift my hands and start exploring the details of his face again. Slowly even the being of him started to come back to me in my memory. I bet I loved his face even more than I would ever love my own.
"Sleep well?"
"Yeah. No dreams though."
"There's always tonight."
"Mm-hmm."
"Did you like the campfire?"
"Loved it. Take me again sometime ok?"
He laughed. "That won't be hard. The elders are always gathering the pack around for those campfires."
I laughed along. His laughter was not only melodious, but also contagious. "I'll bet. But it was interesting though and I'd love to learn more legends."
"I think they're pretty cool..."
"That's why I do too. They're true and they're about you in some way aren't they? Your ancestors were also werewolves so it makes sense."
He kissed my forehead, sending a pleasant shiver down my spine.
"Thanks."
I lifted my head and put my arms around his neck. He responded almost immediately with a kiss. Those warm lips again came into contact with my own. Suddenly he pulled away from me and I felt like a small part of me had been shattered. I wanted those lips back. And more...much more...
"What's wrong?" I asked.
"Seth, put her down."
My eyes widened. Edward hadn't left...
