I was just a bit scared, but to my relief Seth didn't move a muscle. He loosened his grip for a moment, but then tightened it again as I pressed closer to him. I didn't want him to put me down, no matter who told him to.
Seth did sound apologetic when he spoke though. "Edward, I can't exactly do that. You know why."
I suppose this was another test. Somehow it felt even more awkward than it had with Adrian, even though Edward and I weren't directly er...friends I guess?
"Edward, why are you still here?" I asked, but he ignored me.
"Have you by any chance seen Adrian around?" Edward asked. He was asking Seth this time.
Seth's confusion was sincere and this seemed to put Edward at ease. "Huh? No, why? Isn't he at home?"
There was a pause and Edward was definitely reading Seth's mind at that point. Again, I stayed still and just didn't think of anything. Nothing except...that I was kind of annoyed than Edward had showed up when he had.
"Why would Seth know where he is?" I asked, at last breaking the silence. Bad move. Really bad move.
Edward pressed forward, seizing the chance. "What makes you so sure he doesn't know, Charlotte? Or maybe you do?"
I hitched a breath, growing nervous under the strain. And of course, Edward could tell.
"Why are you questioning her?" Seth asked, getting a bit defensive as well.
Edward sighed, and for some reason I sensed that he didn't want to fight with Seth. I was still on my guard though since I couldn't predict just what Edward would do next.
"Seth, Adrian's disappeared," Edward said sincerely. "No one in my family's seen him around since last night."
"Last night?" Seth sounded but surprised, but then there was a hint of recognition in his voice when he said "After he came to pick up Charlotte you mean..."
"Yes," Edward said. "I already asked Charlotte but she doesn't seem to know anything about it. She said you met up with Adrian last night."
"Yeah."
"What happened?"
Uh-oh. This was bad. Now Edward was testing Seth. If Seth's story didn't match the phoney one I'd given Edward earlier, it would only arose his suspicions further and then who knew what he might do. Edward knew that I'd been lying, there was no doubt about that, but he didn't have concrete proof. At least not without giving in to the fact that he could read minds. This was one thing that I felt certain he would not do.
Just as Seth was about to answer, I interrupted. A bit rudely, but at that moment I just wanted Edward to leave. I had to explain things to Seth about my conversation with Edward earlier and...
Actually I didn't think I should mention the outing with Adrian just yet.
"Like I said, I was asleep throughout the car ride, but Seth took me straight home," I said. In my mind, for added measure, I thought And Seth and Adrian didn't really talk all that much. It was all pretty quick and Seth was just anxious to get me home. I swear, I think maybe Adrian's just off hunting on his own or something.
Another bad mistake. Hunting. I wasn't supposed to know that Adrian was hunting.
This turned Edward's attention to me right away though.
"Charlotte, what did Adrian say to you?" he asked, his voice growing even a bit fierce. "You said that you apologized to him and that Seth was taking you home. What else?"
I felt Seth incline himself forward, although only a little. I didn't know how Edward looked at that moment, but I assumed he must've looked scary.
"He told me that it was fine because he was going hunting in those part of the woods anyway," I said, only in order to match my words with my thoughts. At this, both Seth and Edward were surprised, so I continued. "Seth was still in the car when I got out to talk to Adrian so he didn't hear this, but apparently Adrian's really good at hunting. He uses a bow and arrow instead of a gun, or so he told me."
Edward didn't believe me, but at the same time he knew that he wouldn't get his answer at that point.
"Fine, here." He handed me a piece of paper with...braille on it?
"It's my number. Be sure to call me if you get any news about him, ok?" Edward said and it sounded almost like a warning. "My family and I are going to start a search party for him if he doesn't show up by nightfall."
"I don't get this," Seth muttered. "What's there to worry about? Adrian can handle himself and sometimes even you've been gone for more than a few days."
"Yes, only at least I told my family where I was going," Edward said. Then he turned to me. "I'll be leaving then. Goodbye Charlotte."
I gave him a mere nod and then waited until I heard the door close and then the motor of his car outside. I waited until I heard him drive away and then I turned to Seth, who no doubt wanted an explanation.
"What gives?" Seth asked, confused but not angry.
"I lied to Edward," I said. "I lied earlier this morning and said that our meeting with Adrian last night was just so that I could tell him that you were driving me home. I'm so caught up I don't remember exactly what I said, but I do know that Edward can't suspect anything. It wouldn't be a good thing for him to know about what happened, right?"
Seth paused and gave this thought some consideration. "No, I guess it wouldn't be. After all, Edward's pretty touchy about their identities as vampires, although he wouldn't really care if you knew about werewolves. Plus, I don't know if he's entirely on my side anymore."
"On your side?"
Seth sighed. "Charlotte, you know what happened last night. Adrian also loves you and since he's Edward's brother, Edward might be supporting him more than me. We're best friends and all that, but family comes first right. Even Edward understands that my feelings for you go beyond what Adrian could ever feel though."
I nodded, believing him with all my heart. "Yeah, I know," I murmured, suddenly feeling the cozy atmosphere again. Now that Edward was gone, all I wanted was to be alone with Seth. But then I remembered that Lizzy and Joseph were due back any minute.
"Seth, how about we go out today?" I suggested. The further away from anyone, the better.
Seth sounded absolutely delighted with this idea. "Alright! Where do you want to go?" And he kissed my forehead.
"Somewhere on the reserve," I said.
Seth smiled. "I know just the place.
Whew, a lot of tension with Edward, but don't think we've seen the last of him yet. As for why Adrian hasn't been around his family lately, in the next chapter I'll be including part of Adrian's P.O.V. of what happened after his argument with Seth and his thoughts and actions until the next morning when he met up with Charlotte.
The next chapter will be completely about Adrian so I'll continue from Charlotte's P.O.V. with Seth in the chapter after that.
Please tell me what you think :3
