The Final Day - August 26, 2012
Sometimes Kairi wondered if it was worth it, holding on to the memory of a boy no one believed existed. A boy she couldn't even remember the name of, not all the time. Sometimes she remembered it started with an 'S', and sometimes she forgot it completely. Sometimes she remembered playing in the surf with him as a child, and sometimes it was only Riku who reached out to her when she first arrived on the islands. She was certain Riku remembered him too, but it was hard to be sure when Riku wasn't there either.
She was certain Riku was with that boy, off exploring or whatever they were doing. She hoped they were okay. Sometimes, in her chest, she felt her heart contract for no reason and knew they were in danger, in trouble. But when where they not in trouble? She couldn't remember anything in specific, but knew they were a pair of troublemakers.
Sometimes her parents looked at her funny, when she mentioned the boy. Kairi knew it was strange, insisting there existed a boy she couldn't even remember the name of, or point out which family he belonged to. She knew it was strange to think that Riku and him were alive somewhere far away, even after a year and a thorough search of all the islands that a boat could reach. Even Riku's parents were giving up hope on ever finding Riku - or worse his body - after such a long time. But they were okay, they had to be, Kairi would know if they weren't.
Kairi didn't know how she knew that there were places beyond the islands that was their whole world, beyond the stars in the sky. She didn't know how she knew that expanse was where she came from, when no one else had a clue. She didn't know how she knew there were places that lacked even a single drop of water, or where the rain froze and covered the world with white. She figured that 'S-' had told her once, somehow, even though he was still gone.
More than once, she wondered if she was crazy, more than once she forgot him completely. But still, she clinged to him whenever she could, a dusty memory she pulled out and polished on special occasions.
Sometimes she wondered if it was worth holding on to Sora, wondering if he would ever return with Riku to the islands. If the promise they made in their hearts was enough to overcome the thrill of the worlds, the adventure. But he promised, he did, and that promise was what made her try her best to remember the name of the boy she couldn't forget.
We have come full circle. Back to the series that started this all. Thank you everyone who has made it this far, and thank you for sticking with me even though it has taken years longer to post the stories here then it did to write them (this last one especially).
