Ch.25
Puck sat next to Quinn on the sand, before them Beth was dumping sand onto Quinn's legs. The little girl looked adorable in her tiny pink bathing suit with yellow flowers. On her head she wore floppy pink hat that protected her face from the sun. Puck leaned over and bumped Quinn in the shoulder with his, "Two years ago did you ever think we'd be sitting her watching our daughter play at the beach for the first time?"
"Nope, I mean I'd hoped for moments like this but I never thought it come true."
"I know what you mean. I'll forever be grateful to Shelby for allowing us to be a part of her life," he looked behind him where he saw his mother laughing with Judy, Shelby, Frannie, and Hiram then down to the water where Rachel, Leroy, William, Anabelle, and his sister Sarah were playing in the water, "for allowing all of our family to be a part of it."
It was the middle of June and Puck found himself on a giant family vacation with this new blended family whom were all connected through his little girl. It had been Judy and Shelby's idea to get Quinn out of Ohio for one last relaxing vacation before college started. Since Beth was going Shelby had only thought it was fair that Noah went, Noah wanted his family to get quality time with Beth when he found out that Frannie was going with her husband and daughter. Then Shelby decided that this would be a good time to really start to build a relationship with Rachel, and so that was how they all came to rent a gigantic house in the Outer Banks, North Carolina. They'd been there four days so far and it was the best time Noah could remember having on a vacation. He spent most of his time with Quinn, they just sat and talked, went for walks, and played with Beth. Rachel often joined them and even Frannie on occasion. They only had three days left and Noah prayed for time to slow so that he could spent more time with the two most important girls in his life. Nothing made him happier than the moments when it was just himself, Quinn, and Beth, he would soak these moment in as much as he could since soon he wouldn't be able too, with Quinn going away to Yale and himself off to California. He wasn't sure what he was going to do there but he knew he had to get out of Lima, that he needed to find something he loved, he needed a future not only for himself but for Quinn, because he loved her and he wanted to be with her for the rest of his life and there was no way he'd sponge off of her, no he wanted a career that could support her.
"You've been quiet, what's up?" Quinn asked as she leaned into him.
"Just thinking about the future I guess"
"Still excited about California?" Quinn had been his main supporter when he told everyone that he wanted to give California a try for a year.
"Yeah, but nervous too. I mean we'll be 3,000 miles apart. What if you need me?" That was truly his biggest reservation about going all the way to California, what if Quinn needed him? He could just get in the car and be there in a day, no he'd have to fly and that cost a lot of money he just didn't have.
"I'll be fine Puck. This is what growing up is about. Going out on our own finding what we love to do, making mistakes, being successful. It scary don't get me wrong but it's even more exciting. Finally we will be on our own, responsible for ourselves, no parents to make sure we are eating right, or going to classes or our jobs, no one to report to, or give us curfews and bedtimes. It's all on us."
Puck pulled Quinn in for a side hug, beaming proudly down at her. If anyone should be scared about going off on their own it should be her, though she was making some progress in her therapy she was still in her wheelchair and as the weeks passed it looked more and more likely that that maybe a permanent thing. She was so new to all this, she was just getting the hang of living life from the wheelchair and she was about to go away for college, hundreds of miles from home, to a campus that though had been made handicap assessable was still old and less forgiving than a more modern campus.
"Your incredible you know that?" He saw her blush and couldn't resist giving her temple a small kiss.
"Kinn, Uck swim." Beth ordered to them as she pointed towards the water. Noah stood and swooped the little girl into his arms. "Quinn can't come with us but I'm sure she'll love watching you in the water, come on munchkin." With a little wave to Quinn he took Beth to the water's edge where she instantly shrieked and giggle, the kid was truly born a fish.
"Noah be careful." He heard not only Quinn but Shelby yell and he rolled his eyes, poor Beth.
They stayed at the beach until the early evening before heading back to the house. This was Puck's favorite part because an exhausted Quinn never protested him carrying her in his arms back to the house. This was definitely the best vacation ever.
