A/N: So, I decided to do another Skitz scene for AgentMaryMargaretSkitz because this will probably be their last big moment together before the end of the story. Anyway, I hope you all enjoy and review!
Also, sorry for the late update…
"He's breathing," Skye gasped in relief and sagged against Fitz, kneeling next to her on the floor in front of Coulson's prone figure. "Thank goodness."
"He'll be fine," Fitz added, his arm automatically draping around her shoulders and pulling her closer. He sounded just as relieved as she felt.
Skye leaned against him, enjoying the comfort. "So, what do we do now?"
She felt Fitz shrug. "Wait, I guess. Wait and hope that Jemma gets to Ward in time."
Skye pulled out of his embrace so that she could look him in the eyes. He looked worried. Gently, she slipped her hand into his, relishing the feel of her hand in his. "They'll both be fine."
"You don't know that," he grumbled, but he didn't pull his hand away. "She's putting herself into danger and we're just sitting here babysitting our boss."
Skye smiled, trying to lighten the mood. "At least babysitting's easy when your charge is unconscious…" That coaxed a smile out of him. "And besides, Ward would never hurt her."
Fitz sat for a second, processing what she said, a hint of a smile still on his lips. "You're right. You're always right."
Skye laughed. "It's about time you realized that."
"I wish it hadn't taken me so long," he muttered, leaning forward to brush a strand of her hair behind her ear. The mood changed from playful to intense all at once with that action.
"Me too," she whispered, closing her eyes. His lips met hers a moment later in a feathery-light touch that sent shivers down Skye's spine. They broke apart, only for him to kiss her again, more confidently this time.
"I like you," he muttered with a smile as he kissed her nose.
"I like you t-..." Footsteps sounded in the hall and Skye abruptly cut off her sentence while jumping away from Fitz at the same time.
Seconds later, they saw two familiar figures appear. Ward looked a little worse for wear, but he wore an uncharacteristic smile on his normally impassive face. And...and he was holding Jemma's hand. Skye certainly hadn't seen that one coming, especially so soon after she had kissed him… She glanced at Fitz, feeling a blush rise to her cheeks at the thought of their kiss only moments earlier. There had been so much more connection in their kiss instead of the desperation she had shared with Ward. Nope, she thought, having feelings for Ward will not be an issue. She was glad that she could be genuinely happy for her friends.
Skye opened her mouth and was about to welcome them back safely, but Ward cut her off before she could speak. "There's no time for arguing," he said calmly. "Just do as I say."
"Where's May?" Fitz asked before Ward could explain what he was talking about.
"Busy crashing the plane." The answer was curt and delivered in a tone that brooked no argument. "Now grab those parachutes and…"
"Wait, wait?" Skye demanded. "Why?" Briefly, she wondered if Hydra had gotten to him after all and he was trying to kill them all. She discarded the idea immediately, realizing that she was being silly. But still, why would he want to crash the Bus?
"Well, not crashing it exactly," Simmons corrected Ward. "Just landing it a little roughly is all."
"Why?" Skye asked again, more insistently.
"Garrett is tracking the plane," Ward explained curtly. "And he expects me to kill the pilot. May has to fake a crash landing so he doesn't get suspicious."
"If it's a fake crash landing, can't we just stay on board?" Fitz stepped in, sounding nervous. She knew that he wasn't a fan of heights.
"It's not easy to do, even for someone as skilled as May. We're just being cautious," Jemma reassured them.
"And buying time for me to get to Garrett before he figures out that I'm not under his control any longer." Ward's tone was grim and his mouth was set in a stern line. It chilled Skye to see the tightly contained rage behind his eyes.
A thought then occurred to her, and she knew that she had to voice it. "What about May?"
"There's a chute in the cockpit in case things go wrong." Jemma didn't sound too worried, and that was comforting to Skye. "She'll be fine."
Ward nodded along with her statement, then smiled grimly. "Ready to jump?"
…
"I don't think I can do this," Jemma breathed, staring at the ground below her. Far, far below her. The sight brought back so many memories, so much fear.
The sensation of falling towards certain death had haunted her ever since she had jumped off the plane to save her team. Even now, so long after the traumatizing experience, she would wake up terrified and soaked in sweat after another nightmare about Ward being too late to save her.
She couldn't do it again.
But then Grant was there, hugging her from behind. "It's going to be fine," he whispered softly in her ear so that no one could hear. "I won't let you fall."
Immediately, she felt better just knowing that he was concerned for her. But that didn't help the nausea and terror very much. "I...I can't do this." Her breath hitched in her throat and she choked back a sob.
"You don't have to." He pulled her in more tightly against him. "You just hold onto me and close your eyes. We'll do this together."
"But…"
"No buts, Jemma. I'm never letting you go again."
Though she tried, she couldn't think of any reasonable objections, so she just focused on breathing normally while Ward went and helped get Skye, Fitz, and the unconscious Coulson into their harnesses. Skye and Coulson were given a tandem harnesses so that she could man the parachute and Fitz was given a single chute and a pep talk by both Skye and Ward.
It may have been a little selfish, but Jemma was glad that she wasn't the only one nervous for this maneuver.
"Are you ready?" Ward was back at her side, holding another tandem harness.
"Since when have we had those?" she asked, pointing at the tandem harness and trying not to think about what was going to happen.
He smiled slightly as he slipped his arms around her to fasten some buckles. "Since you nearly killed yourself jumping off a plane."
She shot him a watery smile and leaned into his strength as he finished with the harness. It felt good to have him hold her again - he felt safe and strong.
"By the way," he whispered, cupping a hand to her face and looking deep into her eyes, "I have wanted to tell you this for a while, especially after Garrett took you. Jemma Simmons, I love you."
Her breath stopped, but fear wasn't the cause this time. "I love you too." She kissed him fiercely, trying to show him how much she loved him through the action.
Then they were falling. In both the literal and metaphorical sense, but Grant's arms around her and the knowledge that he loved her kept her from throwing up. But just barely.
