Just an update to tell you that the sequel, Across Two Worlds has now been posted! And since there's technically a rule against author's note chapters, I added a one-shot of Hermione/Peter fluff for you :) Hope you enjoy it! It takes place between the two fics during Slughorn's Christmas party.
Peter hated fighting with Hermione. Especially since now he had to find a new date to Slughorn's party.
"Don't let it bother you," Susan said, rolling her eyes. "I'll hook you up with someone, no problem. Blonde or brunette? How smart? Good conversationalist or someone you can ignore all night?"
"Whoa, whoa," Peter said, raising his hands. "I…I was going to ask you to be my date actually. I mean, we did it all the time in Narnia."
"Yes, in Narnia," she said. "Here, it's a little weird. How about Romilda Vane? I bet that would make Hermione furious."
"I'm not trying to make her angry! I'm trying to work this out with her so we can get past it," he protested.
"My sources tell me she's going with McLaggen," Susan said, knowing just how to press her brother's buttons.
"What?!" he exclaimed. After a moment of angry shock, he said, "Set me up with Romilda."
Merlin's pants, McLaggen was obnoxious! Hermione was genuinely regretting accepting his offer. She saw Harry and ran over, hoping to give McLaggen the slip.
"Well then, why'd you invite him?" Harry asked.
"I was hoping to make Peter jealous!" she said.
"Who is… where?" Harry asked.
Just as he asked, the door opened again with Peter walking in with a very giggly Romilda on his arm. Instantly, Hermione got furious.
"Her? Is he serious?" she exclaimed.
Harry smirked as Hermione's back was turned. He'd been the one to tip Susan off about McLaggen, knowing she'd have a plan. He might have not gotten off on the right foot with Peter, but they were friends now. And he had to admit, Peter was good for Susan. He had hoped Hermione and Ron might get together, but Peter seemed a much better fit for her. So he wanted them to get back together enough to be a part of Susan's plan.
"Who knows? Maybe he just asked her to make you jealous and isn't interested in her," Harry said, placing the thought in Hermione's head. Susan had said that if they both knew the lengths the other one went to make them jealous, it would be clear they were still interested in each other.
Hermione saw McLaggen coming, so she ducked out yet again. Peter disentangled himself from Romilda and wandered over.
"Hey, Potter. What's up with Granger?" he said casually, as if he didn't particularly care.
"Have you seen the complete oaf she came with?" he muttered, keeping his voice low so McLaggen wouldn't hear.
Peter grinned. "So she's annoyed? Good. She ought to be."
"You don't look too much happier with Romilda," Harry noted.
His grin faded. "She…got into the butterbeer early."
Harry began chortling at how disgusted Peter looked.
"Harry, have you – oh, it's you," Hermione said, running up to them and noticing Peter.
"Oh, it's you," he repeated back to her.
She pursed her lips. "Where's your floozy off at?"
"Where's your brainless, womanizing lout?" Peter shot back.
"Well, at least the two of you are talking?" Harry said uncertainly. They both glared at him.
"Let's… I don't want to destroy this night. Let's just agree to avoid each other," Hermione pleaded.
"Our nights were already ruined when we both chose such horrid dates," Peter groaned.
Hermione could resist a small giggle. "You're probably right. I… that was stupid. Of both of us."
"We… we should have gone together," Peter said uncertainly.
"Yes, we should have," she said more confidently.
"Oh, hey look. Mistletoe," Harry said, pointing up at the mistletoe which had mysteriously appeared over their heads as he hastily stowed away his wand. "Well, gotta go. Luna's waiting."
"How… how'd he know about us and mistletoe?" Hermione pondered.
"Oh, so that wasn't there before. And here I thought I was simply going crazy," Peter grinned.
"Well, mistletoe…" Hermione said slowly.
"Who are we to break a tradition?" Peter said, offering her his hand. After a moment's hesitation, she took it, and he pulled her in closer for a nice long kiss.
After several seconds, they pulled away when they heard whooping and hollering. They both blushed when they realized the sheer number of students who were watching them and cheering them on. Romilda though looked like she was going to angrily throw something and McLaggen looked shell-shocked.
"Let's never argue ever again," Peter said.
"Agreed," Hermione said.
They sealed this pact with yet another kiss, this time finding a secluded corner away from prying eyes.
