A/N: I don't know if people are still reading this but if so I figured I should at least finish it. So I had some time and beat the writer's block. Here's the next chap. Sorry for any errors. Hope you enjoy!
Chapter 4
Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Fortis College.
The sound of the teacher in the background became clear as he called out a name, "Ms. Bennett? Are you paying attention or am I boring you today?"
"I'm sorry Mr. Dunphy." Sitting up straight, she could see the entire class looking her way.
"I will forgive you if you could tell me what the class was just discussing?" She paused trying to think back but the teacher's voice had only been white noise to her early. "Since I'm guessing that means you can't remember you can stay after class. I have something for you."
Bonnie put on a fake smile not happy she had just gotten called out. The teacher finished and she couldn't help but feel bad. Lately Lea was having trouble sleeping so she would come to sleep in her bed along with her. It was fine at first until Bonnie thought maybe her daughter's nightmares were having an effect on her as well.
The teacher dismissed the class as Bonnie waited for most of them to leave. Walking down towards the teacher, he spoke while she continued to make her way to him. "Bonnie is everything okay? This is the third time this week I have seen you daydreaming in my class."
"I really am sorry, but my daughter she has been having a rough night sleeping lately and I think it might be rubbing off on me as well."
"I understand. Kids." Mr. Dunphy smiled, sitting on the edge of his desk. "I do have something to give you though. Pulling the folder from behind him he placed it in her hand.
Her eyes lit up already knowing what he had handed her without even opening the folder. "You've got to be kidding me?"
"I am not. I got you into the class for next semester."
"How?" trying unsuccessfully to hold in her excitement her eyes beamed at him waiting for the right moment.
"I called in a few favors. You are bright when it comes to this stuff, so I figured why not skip a step or two and just head to the top." Finally at the moment she gave the teacher a hug encompassing all the gratitude she felt in to the embrace.
He pulled back causing her to continue, "Do you think I'm ready for it?" she was genuinely curious when it came to this because she didn't think she quite had it all yet. She was good, better than most students because the occult was her life.
"Of course, even though you have dozed off numerous times lately you still turn in papers and assignments when necessary. Your grades speak for themselves."
"I don't know how to thank you." The dark haired man moved behind his desk taking a seat.
"The best way to thank me is to kick the class in the ass." Bonnie's sight stayed on the paper excitement still bursting from this new information. Now she had to make sure she made him proud.
"I can do that." She nodded.
"Great. Now go home take your daughter to Chuck E. Cheese or something. That might help her nightmares."
"Thank you Mr. Dunphy." She placed the papers in the bag and headed out.
"No sleeping next time." he yelled as she walks away, when half way in to the hall someone blocked her path.
"What'd he say? Do you have to write an essay on why not to sleep in his class?" The petite lady next to Bonnie blocked her path until she got an answer.
"No, Ariel. I don't." Stepping to the right and moving towards the exit, the two began walking in sync.
"I think you're his favorite?" the blonde moved with Bonnie through the crowd. "I mean you never get in trouble. Haley got in trouble two weeks ago for doing what you did."
"That's because when she sleeps in class she snores and she's always late."
"I guess." Bonnie could tell her friend didn't really believe that. "Still he might have a crush on you."
"I'm his student." She was taken aback, not by the accusation because the girl would always say that about certain teachers and students, but because she could tell that Ariel thought Bonnie had liked him as well. She had a moral code. Not a very good one but it worked when it needed to.
"Your point is. This is graduate school. We are all adults here."
"I still wouldn't want to date my teacher." Now it would have been different if maybe she had met him before taking his class or if she felt that this could go somewhere. But she didn't think that.
"I guess. He does look kind of nerdy." Ariel finally said trying to change the subject a little.
"You're so mean."
"I'm not mean. He does look like a huge nerd." Shaking her head at her friend she continued until they came to the exit.
"Anyways, where are you headed? I have to go stop by my Literature teacher's class. It'll take me five minutes."
"Okay. You can meet me by my car."
"Good because we are not finished talking about how Mr. Dunphy has a crush on you. I could write an essay to prove he does." Bonnie watched her friend disappear in the crowd.
Two minutes after getting out of line with her caramel frappe her phone vibrates in her bag. "Hey Bon."
"Yes Lucy?"sighing because she knew her cousin was about to ask her to do something.
"Can you do your cuz a huge favor?" she could hear the desperation in her voice.
"Depends on what it is?" placing her cup on the roof of her car she searched inside her bag for her keys.
"I left my purse at the magic shop can you pick it up on your way home?"
"And you can't do it because?" Struggling to find her keys she stopped to finish the conversation with Lucy.
"I'm at home with my adorable cousin." Bonnie smiled Lucy could never leave Lea, she said the girl was just too precious to let go of.
"Fine, can I speak to my daughter?"
"Lea, your mommy's on the phone," there was a pause "Hi mommy."
"Hey sweetie. What are you doing?" Bonnie and Lea usually spent all their time together when Bonnie wasn't in class or Lea wasn't in school. They were each other's closest friends. She told herself they were building a bond that Lea would cherish because she knows she could always come to her mother if she needed anything. She never wanted her to feel like there was nobody in her corner. Like Bonnie had felt on many occasions.
"Playing dolls." Her daughter spoke.
"You having fun." Bonnie didn't want to worry but it was something about Lea that had been bothering her lately. She figured it was the nightmares she was having. Her daughter was losing some of her enthusiasm and it scared the witch immensely.
"Yes." Sounding distant, she could hear the sound of the dolls making noise in the background.
"Alright mommy will see you in a few minutes okay."
"Yes. Bye Mommy." Hanging up the phone she found her keys and threw her bags in the back of the car. The sound of someone screaming alerted her to her surroundings. Having a habit of going to help when people needed it she looked around to see where it was coming from. There was no one around breathing in deeply she relaxed herself before her Ariel got to the car.
"I thought I had to go to the other side of the campus but luckily I don't need it until Monday." When her statement was followed by silence the blonde looked to her friend. "Are you okay?"
"Yeah. I'm just tired. I need to get some sleep." Igniting the engine, she back away and headed home.
Santa Barbara, California. Forbes Estate.
It was late at night, as Stefan walked around. Caroline had sent the maids home early wanting to get some sleep. Stefan had thought it was because she had just wanted to be alone. He had never quite asked her what had happened when she left Mystic Falls. She had left everyone without a goodbye but they knew who she was with. After that pretty much everyone else started going their own separate ways as well. As far as he knew the only person still in Mystic Falls was Matt. He knew his brother was gone because he didn't have a reason to stay there anymore.
Standing next to the grand window in the living room, he took in the night sky, his thoughts going back to Caroline. He had wondered what had happened and why Klaus had left her. That's what he had assumed but maybe she had left him, he wasn't sure and he felt he shouldn't ask. No matter how much Caroline continued to be inquisitive about his last seven years. He had kept that secret, mostly because he was always moving not standing in the same place for too long. "I heard you down here brooding."
"I'm not brooding." He answered not looking back at her. "I'm just thinking."
"About what?" She asked curiously.
"You really want to know."
"I wouldn't have asked if I didn't want to know." She retorted. He smiled finally turning to face her.
"What happened to you?"
"Ahhh. So that's what's been keeping you up. Worried about little old me?" Caroline stared out into the sky Stefan was previously engrossed in.
"I was just wondering because you always bring up a chance to ask what I've been doing."
"And you dodge the question, every time. Like you don't want me to know." Honestly he didn't. "It can't be that bad."
"Maybe not." Pausing for a moment a hint of smile appeared on his face. "I like how you did that?" Stefan acknowledged going to sit on the couch in front of her. "Turned the conversation so we can talk about what I've been doing?"
"You caught that huh." Caroline grinned. Stefan couldn't help but to still be amazed at the person in front of him. He watched her get up scratching her arm as she poured herself a drink. "I guess you'll tell me when you're ready. Just know I won't judge. Not harshly at least."
"I know you won't." Caroline had moved to sit on the couch. "Is everything alright?"
"Why'd you ask that?"
"Well first I know you can't sleep?" She looked down knowing he would have figured it out, by the sleeping pills she had given him.
"It's not that I can't sleep. It's more like I have a hard time staying asleep."
"Does it have anything to do with the thing on your arm you keep scratching?" She looked down to the small red and purple bruise on her arm.
"No. I don't think so. I got it after going to the beach a few days ago. I don't know why it hasn't healed yet."
"Maybe once you get some sleep it will. Do you need your pills back?" He could still clearly see something was bothering her but he wouldn't push. All in its right time.
"Yeah." Caroline thought over as she took a sip. He knew what was bothering her would come out now. "I just…we've been roommates for a few months and we still don't talk that much or spend that much time together."
"I don't think that matters because we can still have conversations like this if we haven't spoken in years. That's just the kind of friends we are." Stefan grabbed her hands. Rubbing his finger soothingly over hers.
"We are." She smiled happy with this information. "I guess I'll leave you to your thinking."
"Sleep well." He watched her disappear down the hall and heard her close her bedroom door. Turning back to the window his thoughts took over again
New York City, New York. Tyler's Loft.
"So I heard you sold a series of painting to some buyers?" Dan asked.
"Only one or two. I wouldn't call it a series." Tyler poked around in his fridge until he found the jelly he was looking for.
"Let me guess it was two pictures of the blonde girl?"
"You know I do draw other stuff?" the hybrid spread the peanut butter continuing the conversation with his friend.
"What like your new found obsession of those creepy woods you started drawing."
"They aren't creepy. That's the place I grew up, back in Virginia."
"Ah. You guys didn't have buildings. "
"Yes."
"But you decided to draw the creepy woods." Honestly Tyler had no idea where the idea to draw back home came from. He just sort of woke up one day and couldn't get the image out of his head. As he thought about, that's when he drew most of them. When he got up from sleeping, "Earth to Ty? You okay man?"
"Yeah my bad," Looking down at his sandwich he pushed the two pieces of bread together, and headed to his couch.
"You draw a lot of stuff from back home. It must have been a great place full of happy memories." Happy wasn't the word that he would use to describe most of his memories from back home. "Though I have to admit I'm glad you are drawing other things besides the girl. I was getting tired of it and it was starting to depress me."
"Good to know my art depresses you."
"That's not what I'm saying man. It just, you can tell you really liked the girl and when you look at the picture. I can see your heart breaking all over again."
"That does sound depressing."
"Right? Besides now that we have these creepy trees, maybe it's finally starting to get better for you." Tyler had hoped that was the case. Though looking at the picture in front of him and thinking about home, he had a feeling it wasn't getting better but going in the opposite way.
Madrid, Spain. Alvarez Casa.
Elena sat at the island in the kitchen playing the game on the back of the cereal box. She loved the few quiet hours she got before the rest of the house woke up and tainted it. Her roommates were exactly what she had needed, people who just wanted to have fun and didn't hurt people. She likes to think because of them she had grown to be a better person. There was only one rule if she stayed with them. They didn't kill people. It seemed to be easy enough but she had gone off the rails a few times before finally getting it together. And she owed it all to Marsha Alvarez. She was a bit ruthless when she needed to be but was patient, generous and willing to help. All of them coming to her rescue, she didn't know where she'd be if she had never met them. Byron, Brittany, Marsha, and Sam had found her at a low point in her life and helped her to rebuild.
They were the friends she always wanted. Her old friends, well she didn't need them anymore. That's what she thought when she left them so long ago but over time she did have her moments were she missed them, whether it was Caroline's enthusiasm, Bonnie's loyalty, Jeremy's protectiveness, Matt's kindness or Tyler's humor. Those feeling would never disappear she realized and it was okay because the moments she thought about them now came few and far between. She only, sort of, spoke to her brother, sending him a post card every few months to let him know she was okay.
"Morning early bird." Sam walks by the stool and Elena can't help but to scrunch her nose.
"Dude your morning breath is terrible." Not turning her body towards him, he stopped wide eyes already apologizing.
"Sorry. I should go brush them." Covering his mouth he dashed to the bathroom hearing his roommate laughing behind him.
"Did you scare the poor boy?" Brittany walked in the front door with, Helga. Helga was her psychic friend. The two were inseparable. Elena thought they were lesbians when they first met but she grew to understand their complex bond eventually.
"No. I was just letting him know about his breath. Where are you two coming from this early in the morning?"
"We went for a run. This one right here is getting lazy on me." Helga elbowed her friend, getting a grunt in return.
"I just wanted to sleep in my very big and comfortable bed." Fiona moaned leaning on the couch. The brunette vampire placed the empty bowl in the sink, making her way to her lounging friend, but accidentally bumping into Helga. She turned around to give her sincerest apology before watching the blonde beside her crumple over in pain.
"Helga? Are you okay? Oh my god I'm so sorry." Brittany sped off the couch and stood next to her.
"Helga?" rubbing her back and attempting to stop her from crumpling to the floor she moved her to the couch.
"I'm okay. I just." She looked over to Elena. "I had a vision or feeling of some kind."
Elena saw the way that Helga held her gaze something in her eyes that she knew she had saw before plenty of times but she couldn't put her finger on it. "What'd you see?"
"I saw fire and blood. I felt pain and destruction. Like…"
"Go head Helga. I'm right here." Brittany continued to comfort her.
"I felt like death was coming… for you." Elena realized now the look she saw in the woman eyes. That looked she had seen and probably had many times before. Fear. Fear for whatever was coming for her.
A/N: I'm sure people are picking up on one common factor our group of friends is having. Hoped you enjoy.
