Chapter 5: Jealously

Lyric:

"So why were you late?" Percy asked as we sat in the living room alone.

"It's none of your business but I was with Leo." I said, rolling my eyes.

"Are you guys getting serious?"

"What do you mean?"

"Well, you guys are dating, aren't you?"

"What?! No!"

"Really?"

"Yes!"

Percy looked skeptical. "You sure?"

"Oh my God, please shut up."

Percy smirked. "Oh come on, you two are always together."

"It's because we're friends, though I guess you don't know considering you don't have any."

"Ha ha." Percy laughed sarcastically. "You know, Me and Annabeth were friends before we started dating."

"I'm walking away from this conversation." I said, getting up and heading to the kitchen. I could hear Percy laughing behind me.

About a month and a half after that, Percy and Sally moved in with us.
"I'm not understanding what the problem is?" Leo said.

"It's not really a problem. It's just... me and my dad have been on our own for all these years now we're adding people to the equation and-"

"You're jealous."

"What?!"

"You're jealous because now you have to share your dad and you don't want to."

"That's not it."

"Then what is it?" Leo smirked. It was the kind of smirk that made me want to either kiss him or punch him in the stomach. Right now it was the lather. "Face it Lyric, you've never been good at sharing."

I grumbled and slouched into my seat, hiding behind my menu. It was a thing we've done since we got into high school, go to lunch at a diner. We started doing it so we wouldn't lose touch in high school, now we just do it for fun.

I was pulled out of my train of thought when I heard an airy
"Leo?"

We both turned to see where the voice was coming from. There was a girl standing next to our table with her work uniform on. she had bright hazel eyes, long light brown hair, and a smile that could blind people in Russia.

I decided that I didn't like her.

Or maybe I didn't like the way Leo was smiling back at her.

"Calypso?" Leo stood up to hug her. "What are you doing here?"

"I work here now." She said, gesturing to her uniform smiling.

"I can see that." He says looking her up and down. Is he checking her out while I'm less than 3 feet away, seriously?! I thought to myself. "Uh, This is... Umm."

"Lyric." I said looking betrayed.

"Right." Leo said. "This is Calypso." He gestured to her.

There was a moment of silence as if this were the Midwest and Me and Calypso were facing off at high noon.

"It's nice to meet you." She said after a couple of minutes. She didn't mean it and we both knew. She saw me as competition, but the question was did I see her that way.

"Likewise." I said, with the fakest smile and I turned away.

"I'm sorry, am I interrupting your date?" She said.

"What?! No! Lyric's just my friend."

"Oh, ok." She smiled. "Well, you should text me later."

"Alright." Leo flirted. Since when does Leo flirt? I thought to myself.

She walked away and Leo sat back down. I looked at him with a raised eyebrow.

"What?" He asked.

"Nothing." I frowned and looked down.

Leo gave me a look. "Seriously what's up?"

"What kind of name is Calypso anyway?"

Leo raised an eyebrow. "Well, your name is Lyric."

"Lyric was the most common girl name in 2007 thank you very much." I said. "I'm just saying it sounds like prostitute name."

"Lyric!"

"You lie down with dogs you wake up with flies, that's all I'm saying."

"What is up with you?" Leo snapped. "Are you jealous?" he whispered, as if he were scared to say it.

"Shut up."

"Of Calypso?" He said. "Seriously?"

"I said, Shut up, Valdez!"

"Why? Cause it's true?" Leo laughed. "I was right you don't like to share."

"So what if I don't!" I snapped. "Everyone I love ends up leaving me anyway. So what, if I want to slow down the process. I like things the way they are why would I want anything to change?"

The smile on Leo's face dropped tremendously fast. "Lyric..."

"Don't Lyric me. I'm not some child who dropped an ice cream cone." Leo still gave me a look but I brushed it off. "Look, if you want to go out with her I'm not stopping you." I then smiled. "But if you wake up with something don't come crying to me."

"Lyric, I don't want to go out with her."

"You don't?"

"No." He smiled. "Like I said, I'm waiting on someone."

"If it's not her who is it?"

Leo just shrugged. "Do you want to tell me what that was about."

"Not really." I said. "I don't want to talk about it."

"Why?"

"You know, I feel like the only conversations we have now are serious."

"That's because you weren't serious for a majority of our friendship."

"You know I actually hate it when you do that."

"Do what?"

"You treat me like I'm a shit friend."

"Lyric..."

"I told you about that." I frowned. "Maybe you should ask her out. So, you'll have someone to be a bitch to besides me."

"You know that's not fair." Leo said. "Every time I try to get even close to you emotionally, you shut down and insult me and you'd rather lose everyone than to let anyone in. And I really don't have to take this, I don't have to take your shit. I don't have to be your friend, I only am because you have nobody else."

He spoke in a low hiss and the words would've hurt less if he was yelling. It felt as if he was waiting for the 7 years we've known each other to say that. It hurt. I felt the depression that I've had for so long haunt me. I feel it creeping back into my mind. I squinted my eyes to delay the tears that were inevitable. I looked him straight in his eye and he could probably see the tears that were threating to fall.

"Fuck you." I pushed the table away and moved to storm out the diner.

"Lyric, wait." I felt a tug on my wrist. I pulled it out of his grasp.

"Don't you ever touch me!" I hissed.

I didn't mean it. I wanted nothing more then to have him hold me and tell the thoughts I was having to be quiet. But I couldn't just let him win. I had to prove I was good for something. But I still wasn't. I looked at him one more time and pushed on out the door.

Leo:

I rode around town looking for Lyric.

I should've known that she was at the tree.

Or what was left of it.

"They cut it down." She whispered, facing the tree. She didn't turn around so she must've heard me walk up. "They cut down our tree."

I tried to put an arm around her only to have it shrugged off.

"I can't help feeling like this is a sign or some kind of omen." She said. "Like it's the end."

"Lyric, It's not the end." I said. "I'll always be your friend."

"Not the end of us... The end of me." She turned away from me. "I've got to go."

I grabbed her wrist. "Lyric, don't do anything stupid." I choked. "Please."

She looked past me for a second before looking me in the eye. "I've got to go."

"Lyric, let me give you a ride home please. I'm right here, you don't have to do this."

She looked me straight in the eye and it was a look I've never seen before. She wasn't Lyric all of a sudden, Lyric couldn't be this cold.

"I'd rather walk."

And just like that she left me.

I waited until the next morning to try and see her because I didn't know what to say. As soon as I got up, I marched over there. Today was the day, I decided, Today I was going to tell her how I felt because I saw her last night and I knew what that look meant. I meant she was feeling worthless and I knew it was my fault. I had to tell her I didn't mean it. I had to tell her how much she meant to me.

When I knocked Percy answered and he looked like he's been up all night. His eyes bugged out when he saw me.

"Um, hey..." He said, awkwardly. I knew something was wrong immediately because Percy was hardly ever awkward.

"Hey, is Lyric here?" I said, pushing past him into the house.

Percy sighed and then he said the worst three words I could ever here.

"She's gone, Leo"
