Chapter 5
His Butler, Masquerade ball
Sebastian P.O.V
"Young Master the guests should be starting to arrive soon if we are to be greeting them down stairs when they do arrive we need to start getting you ready for this evenings festivities," I chimed as I walked in to my masters study to find him sleeping in his chair. I stood there staring at him. For an obnoxious little brat he almost looked like an innocent child when he slept. With a sigh I reminded myself that there were still a lot of things I had left to finish as I made my way over to him and lightly shook him awake.
"Young master please do wake up, we really need to finish preparing for your ball. You still need to change," I urged as I watched him stir a bit before opening his eye and rubbed the sleep from it. I smiled down at him as I towered over. "Did you have a nice nap young master?" I chimed as happily as I could as I watched him push out his chair and stand grabbing his cane.
"It was fine- tell me Sebastian why did you let me fall asleep knowing that we had important things to do tonight?" My eye twitched in utter annoyance as I followed him out of the study and down the hall. The brat- turning this on me when he had me doing other things while having to deal with the servants. If only I could-
"Forgive me young masters I was busy making the arrangements for tonight's masquerade ball you're hosting that I hadn't the time to come and see to you like usual." I said apologetically as we got to his room and walked inside I made my way over to his wardrobe and opened up the doors. "Now let's see- was there any specific outfit you'd like to wear tonight?" I asked as I pulled out a few and started to compare which I thought would be most fitting for the young master to wear for tonight.
"I don't exactly care much, Whatever will do, I don't even feel like attending tonight. It seems like a whole lot of pointless interactions " he answered carelessly as I glanced from him to the masquerade mask that I had set out earlier for him and decided which outfit would work well with it.
"I don't think so, your business partners will be attending- weren't you looking forward to meeting them again?"
"Yes- but I'll be to busy accompanying my other guests to speak with Lady Melody. Beside she could have changed her mind on attending because of her sister being hospitalized. Which brings me back to the whole part where it'll be nothing but pointless interactions tonight."
"Ah yes- I had forgotten about that. Well even so- you still have to make an appearance eventually."
"Tsk- don't remind me." He hissed as I helped him get dressed, the last piece being the mask I tied to his face. After helping him dress we started down stairs and began to greet the guests who started to arrive. This was going to be one very interesting night.
Raven's P.O.V
"This is ridiculous, I cant believe I have to wear this thing- it's going to make me stand out like a swore thumb," I whined as my sister and I sat in the carriage with Lucian as Demetri drove us to the Phantomhive manor. Melody giggled as she watched me fuss, "Oh come now Raven it's not so bad. I think you look adorable- and Lucian, You did a wonderful job with her hair." She complimented Lucian's work who just sat there smiling at my sister afraid to even say thank you as if he was afraid I'd hit him or something. I growled under my breath and crossed my arms pouting.
" Yea like youre one to talk, You atleast have a respectable looking dress- mine….just look at it, Its short and looks like the skirt got ripped to shreds."
"I thought you liked that style?"
"I do, but not in public when we're going to a ball ill be seen as a-" I paused unable to speak a river of tears running down my face, "You know how many people will give we the cold shoulder if they saw me in this dress Meldoy? It's bad enough I already get treated that way cause of my heart condition this is going to make it ten times wrose,"
"That's not true, and its not that short at all it's normal length for a respectable noble young lady besides it's a masquerade ball they'll just think your wearing a costume and youll be wearing a mask so unless you tell someone your full name they wont know its you. Now could you please settle down?" I huffed and slinked back into my seat as I stared out at the night sky and watched the lovely country side zoom past on our way to the Phantomhive manor. Eventually the brightly manor came into view and we began to pull in to the gates. Outside stood the earl Ciel Phantomhive himself and his butler Sebastian greeting all who had arrived. I sighed as Lucian held out the masks, mine being in the shape of a cat. Well at least it went well with the outfit, that's all I can say. Tying it tight I felt as the carriage came to a holt and the door to our carriage swung open Demetri standing there to help us out.
First Lucian, then my sister and I was the last to exit the carriage. "Remember if you ladies need anything just call us, well be outside waiting."
"Right- thank you so much for everything- I wish we could bring you two inside."
"It's fine mistress, besides it give me a chance to keep a close eye on your sister's new butler."
"No killing eachother- its bad enough you guys helped mr. Tyler destroy our home earlier we aren't paying for the damages you make to the Phantomhive manor."
"Yes- please don't he's our business partner now and we don't want to ruin it already so please behave yourself."
"Yes misteress/ Lady melody." They chimed in unision before Melody and I started on our way to the front door of the mansion where Ciel and Sebastian stood waiting. I don't know If was seeing things but to me it almost looked as if my sisters smile got bigger as we got closer to them. It's to bad I don't know which one she was smiling at.
At the door we were behind The duke and duchess of candervile and once they went inside we walked up. "most people wait till the get inside to put on their mask's. you two are the first to come up with yours on. May I ask the honors of who you might be?" Ciel chimed suavely as he reached out and took my sisters hand kissing it like a gentleman would. I watched her face flush red as she silently giggled.
"Forgive me, I didn't know we had to wait till we went inside to put the masks on Earl Phantomhive. I guess you could call it a bad habit for my sister and I"
"Your sister and you?" Ciels eye looked at melody surprised then me, "I thought your sister was in the hospital."
"I was- but I didn't want to miss the chance to crash the party. Besides I didn't want my sister coming alone. Im kind of over protective of her."
" Really? I didn't think that was possible."
"yes, its sad but true- Ravens the sick one and shes the protective one of me."
"well either way, Im glad the two of you made it. I actually wasn't expecting either of you to attend because of Ravens recent situation."
"Please don't make me the center of attention here, I hate," I grumbled before I walked on insisde alone I could feel eyes on me and sighed. 'This was going to be one very long night,' I thought as I made my way over to the refreshment table to try the wine and snacks they had out for their guests. As the night passed through I watched as couples danced the night away or socialize with the other guests. I even watched as Ciel walked over to my sister and offered her a dance. I watched as the two danced so gracefully, well kind of ciel looked a little rusty on his dancing but still with my sister the two looked like they were dancing on air. I was almost envious.
I could feel as I sharp pain ran through my chest and clutched it before I made my way out to the back of the manor and into their garden. "Even with this mask on nobody still wanted to dance with me," I said to myself quietly as I walked as far as I could into the lovely rose garden before finally decided to take a seat on a bench I found and stared down sadly at the ground removing the mask from my face and set it down on the bench beside me. " Am I really that hated in England?" I wondered out loud as tears began to fight to the surface and started to fall from my eyes.
"Excuse me, but are you okay?" my head shot up as my eyes fell on ciel's butler Sebastian and quickly tried to wipe the tears from my eyes. "Im fine," I said repeatedly turning away from him still wiping away my eye as the tears continued to fall. "Shouldn't you be with your master and keeping your guests companied?" I questioned trying so hard not to let it show that I was crying.
"Im sure my young master can manage by himself for a little while, beside your sister is with him and those two looked to be having a wonderful time together so I don't think I have much to worry about. " There was the sharp pain again, Im starting to wonder if I don't have a grudge against people who are happy or having a good time.
Gulping down my pride I turned around to face Sebastian so that I could talk to him like I would any person but when I turned around he was right there only inches from my face. My eyes widened as I felt my face get warm and started into his lovely unnatural dark red eyes. At first I was unable to speak but then I mustered enough guts up to say something. "You- are you?" I tried to question as I stared at him my face getting hotter.
"Forgive me Lady Raven I didn't mean to intrude in your space. It's I was enchanted by what I've seen." He quickly pulled away and turned away.
"You are aren't you?"
"I don't know what you a talking about lady Raven?"
"Youre a demon-" his head whipped around I could tell he was shocked to hear me call him such a ridiculous thing, but now I was certain just from his apparenece. After that horrible experience I had as a child with Demetri's true form I had the ability to see in to the soul of any being weather it be human or other creature. No one but I and Demetri knew about. A secret kept for a good reason. Sebastian chuckled a bit. "My lady I think you might be a light weight, just one drink of wine and your sputtering utter nonsense. Come now let us go back inside and ill make you some coffee- itll take away the less affects of a hangover if you are lucky enough to get one." I said smiling a false smile at me. I just stood there and continued to stare.
"You're contracted to Ciel aren't you? Who else knows about this?" I questioned him like it was an interrogation. His face turned blank as his eyes started to glow blood red like Demetri's earlier but I showed no hint of fear at all. I mean why would I? I saw Demetri's true form Sebastian was nothing more then a monster under my bed if anything. "You're a very smart girl, Im surprised. Youre the first human I have met who hasn't been blind to the true reality of this world. Besides you, only my master and I knew about my true being. Can I ask how you figured it out?"
"Why does it matter? Youre just going to kill me now that you know I know, right?"
" Oh heavens no- If I even tried to your butler would come to your rescue you."
"Butler?" I said confussed, "You mean Demetri? He doesn't care about me. He's contracted to my sister Im just a nobody in that family- an outcast if you will. Always have been always will be." I said looking away and at the ground. In the blink of an eye he had me pinned to the ground his eyes once again glowing red. "Now why would you say that about yourself my dear? I can see in to each and every human soul I come acrossed you- somehow yours in different, so much pain, regret, hate, remorse, lonelieness, fear, you want to be wanted but you push everyone away because of how many times you've hurt physically and mentally. Youre the first human I've seen who carries so much on them but has yet to given in to the world and let your soul shatter to pieces and lie down in your own grave. Yet it still shines like the happiest soul in the world. It's almost like the theatrical masks. Not even my master has a soul like yours. A demon would be please to have a soul like yours." He whispered into my ear his hot breath caressing my ear as he still held me down as he pushed himself up and stared down at me.
"Honestly If I might say so myself your butler was an idiot to have choosen your sister over you."
" Im sick remember? Who would want the soul of a sickly child?"
" The weaker the soul the easier it is to devour. Now do enlighten me on how you figured it out that I was a demon. I am curious now." His tone quickly changed as he got up and helped me up. " I've just always had the talent atleast ive had since I saw my sister's butlers true form when I was a lot younger."
"So you servived through seeing the true form of a demon. With your horrible history with heart problems I would think youd died of a heart attack. I mean only humans contracted to demons are most likely able to surive an incounter with their servants true form. Anyone else they are either killed, go insane or the fear takes over and they have such a surveer heart attack their body shuts down permanately. You are a very lucky girl."
"You say that but I don't feel that way." I answered as I brushed off my dress and sighed, "Should go back inside Im sure my sister is wondering where I am." Turning away I huffed and took a step forward to head back towards the mansion before Sebastian grabbed my arm and spun me around and pulling me into a tight embrace caressing my chin.
"Milady, please accompany me in a dance? It would be such a waste of time for all the effort my master and I put into throwing this party for even one of our guests to leave unsatisfied," I could feel my face get hot and my throat tighten as I stared up into his unnatural red colored eyes again.
It was odd even though I knew he was a monster like my sister butler, I almost felt at home in his embrace. Safe and sound like a child with their parents as he twirled me about the beautiful rose garden ever so gracefully. Why did this feel like a distant dream I once had? I wondered as he lead me around our makeshift dance floor which seemed like centuries but sadly the song inside came to an abrupt end and the dream turned into the reality I hated so much.
When my eyes fluttered back open I quickly averted my eyes to the ground almost as if I was digusted with myself for dancing with the devil until he lifted my head again and pressed his soft, warm lips against mine. My eyes widen in surprise as I slowly began to melt into his sudden and very random action. Eventually I dazed out and he pulled away pulling me into yet another secure embrace before leaning into me. "I found you-" he whispered, snapping me out of my trans I pushed him away. "Im sorry I have to go," I said quickly before hurrying on my way to find my sister.
-Sebastian-
I stood there watching as Raven hurried off alone back towards the mansion and smirked to myself letting the slightest piece of my demon side show. I wasn't sure before but now I was. She was who Ive been searching for such a very long time. Its to bad she doesn't remember me- atleast theres time. I thought slightly chuckling to myself quietly before heading off back inside to see how my master was doing.
-Melody-
" For someone who says they cant dance, you can dance," I joked as me and ciel danced about the dancefloor gracefully. I watched his face turn beat red and giggled. "Whats the matter Earl Phantomhive? Hasn't anyone ever joked around playfully with you before?" I asked as we came to a stop at the end of the music and walked off the dancefloor together.
"No-no one has ever done that with me before."
"Really? Why not?"
"Because Im not the one to play around."
"Well that's not right. Youre still a child you should take time off to do so."
"Im far to busy to act like a child."
"Hmm- well I don't think so. To much work and not enough play makes Ciel a dull boy. If you try it once I bet more people will be better to you."
"Hardly- If I acted like my age people would take me for granted and try to play me and that's not a chance I want to take. I adivse you to do the same," He replied coldly as he handed me a punch cup before taking a sip of his. I sighed looking out on the dancefloor to watch all the lovely couples dance. Its such a sad thing to see someone like my sister. I glanced at ciel from the corner of my eye watching him carefully my face slowly twisting into a sympatheticly look.
For years I have grown up with knowing someone who was tortured by the world around them which just so happened to be my twin sister to this day I still wished Raven was allowed to do the things I was given the chance to do. I almost feel as if it was my fault I was the one who tortured her all these years even more so when I tried to make it right after our parents passed on and I decided to be a nice sister and pull Raven out of her prision but I guess I was wrong to have done so because her torture and pain got worse then what it was. As I looked back at our past I hadn't noticed my sister baerl through the crowd of people towards me and the earl until I heard her speak.
"melody are you ready to go hime now?" she asked in almost a scared tone, kind of like she would if she saw a thunder storm start to move in. my eyes panned upwards at my sister who wasn't wearing the mask she had woren.
"Is something the matter Ray?"
"No- nothings wrong, its just getting late and I don't think you want to stay out to long since you do have that huge company meeting tomorrow." She blurted out. It was obvious something was wrong but I learned a very long time ago that nomatter how much you push Raven for answers shell stay as quiet as a bird who sense danger. "yes, I guess you are right. I do have to get up bright and early tomorrow morning," I said with a sigh and looked at ciel. "Forgive me, but my sister and I should get going she has a point- tomorrow I have a huge company meeting I have to attend and I do have to get up pretty earl to make it there. But I did Enjoy the party for the time we spent here. Thank you," I said curtsing like a lady would to the young earl but just as I was to turn and walk away he grabbed my hand.
"No-Please wait," he stated coldly but quickly cleared his throat and regained his composer," Forgive me I didn't mean that the way it sounded but I cant let you leave yet, not with out giving you this. He said pulling out what looked like an envelope with my sisters and mine first and last name written out on it in lovely calligraphy. I stood there staring at it in awe.
"Another invitation to a party?"
"Not quiet- atleast I don't think so. It's a letter to the queen addressed to you two. It came in my mail earlier today and she asked me to give it to you two."
"Is this a joke? What could the queen want with us?" Raven chimed in sounding offended like this was a crule joke to play on the two of us. I just stood there in utter nonsense.
"No this isn't a joke at all. It's a letter from her majesty address to both of you it came in my mail today with a package she sent to me. Look Im not one to play games with something as serious as this and Ill be completely honest with you Im not the type to take in business partners unless I do a complete background check on them. So I did some digging and the queen heard about it and she sent me a package about you and your family. Melody- Raven your father use towork under the queen like my father." He tried his best to explain but the more and more he explained the deeper the whole he dug himself into with my sister.
"Say what you will, what makes you think we should believe you?"
"because she also sent these," he said as he took out another envelope with what looked like photos that had been taken quiet alone time ago. I gasped in shock as my eyes began to water as I took the photos from him and slowly looked through them. "These- they're-" I stuttered out before I looked at ciel and reach for the letter he held in his hand at his side and flipped it over to find none other than the royal seal itself. I could hear Raven aw surprised which made me sure that she believed him now.
"Forgive us for our reaction- its just we couldn't believe you. Atleast not until we saw the royal seal."
"Its fine, Im not mad just do me one favor and read what her majesty has written you. I am sure it is utterly important if she asked me to hand deviler it to you myself." He said, before turning away his butler at his side. I blinked surprised as I stared up at him- was he standing there the whole time? I wondered before Raven started to pull out my arm. "Lets go melody-its getting late," she urged pulling me towards the door to the front of the mansion before I could say my final farewell to the Earl.
Outside waiting for us like they knew we had planned on leaveing the party early stood Demetri and Lucian. Once inside the carriage we were wisked off into the dark night.
-Ciel-
"Mind telling me why Lady Melody's sister went pale when she saw you Sebastian?" I chimed to my butler as I watched the twins hurry for the door and took a sip of my punch. Behind me I could feel Sebastian give me that stupid Cheshire grin as if he was acting like he didn't know the reason himself even though I knew other wise. " A gental man never kisses and tells young master," Was all he replied for a moment before continuing to speak, " Lets just say shes a very very wise girl and I think we should keep a closer eye on her." I turned my head up at Sebastian and gave him a strange look.
"Saddly Im going to have to agree- those two…..Theyre different…..Diffrent from anyone I have ever met before." I said before handing him my cup and walked off through the crowd and spent the rest of the evening talking business with my other guests.
