Chapter 7
Their Master's, Meet the Queen
We stood before the Phantomhive townhouse in the wonderful city of London which sat near what looked like a very busy street as Carriages came to and from both direction. It looked a little tiny for a townhouse of a family of three and guests if they had any over but I guess I can't exactly complain much seeing as it was me and my sister being the intruders in this case. I stood there staring it over. It hardly looked as if it had been used at all in a while which made me curious if the inside was dusty or if they had a servant here to clean it up while they were away.
Making our way up to the front door of the town house Sebastian pulled opened the door and held it opened as we entered then closed it behind him and went to his master's side removing his coat. "I hate this," Ciel chimed quietly in a cold tone of voice as if for us not to hear his cruel words, "There are too many people in London," I turned my head in his and Sebastian direction with an arched eye brow as my sister awed at how lovely the inside of his home was. I still think our safe house was far bigger than this dingy old place. "Well there's no helping it my lord," Sebastian answered back in the same silent tone as his master, looking almost peachy at the way his master was acting which I might say I had a part in with the story I had told on our way here. What a poor sport he was.
"Yes, Sebastian does have a point- it is only tradition for noble men and women to migrate to town from the country every season." I turned my head toward Demetri who spoke up acting as if this was something no one but he knew. I rolled my eyes as Ciel and Sebastian looked over at him both dumbfound that someone had heard them speaking to one another. Not like it was hard to- those two were terrible at whispering, or at least Ciel was. I stood next to Lucian quietly; at least the inside of the mansion wasn't as bad as I thought it would have been. Ciel started to walk forward toward the stairs then stop before the first step. "Season hey? A waste of time if you ask me," a slight chill ran down my spine at the tone in the Earls voice as my sister and I began to follow behind, "that I can agree with-" I chimed as Ciel turned his head to look at me.
"Is that so Raven? And why would someone like you agree to such a comment from someone like me?"
"Why else? The Christmas holiday isn't exactly fun when you have no loved one to spend it with- beside Melody and I stopped celebrating Christmas the year our parents had died."
"I highly doubt that- you two look far too enthusiastic about your life to not care for any holiday."
"You judge people far too easily Ciel- looks can be deceiving," I said quietly for only me, him and Sebastian to hear and winked at the two when I had finished talking as the six of us ascended the stairs of his town house. "Lady Raven does have a point my lord. Judging people to early could be your down fall in the future," Sebastian answered in return before my sister decided to speak. "Yes and besides you look like you needed to get away from you're mansion. It will probably be a nice change of pace for you." I glance at my sister from the corner of my eyes and silently sighed. If Ciel said even one rude thing to her about what she said I was certain he'd be dead before his butler could get to him. I've met people like him before and Melody's kind were very easily broken even with the slightest cold comment and I hated to see my sister hurt.
"It's always nice to have an optimist in the mist of things lady Melody- thank you. My master did need a break from our other servants at least."
"Oh? The gardener, Maid and cook? They can't have been that bad- they all seemed really nice." I covered my mouth and began to snicker turning from the other five as we continued up the stairs. Maybe I should have said the judging thing louder so my sister could here. From first glances even I knew they were all terribly clumsy and had no hand eye coordination. I honestly expected Melody to have noticed to since our servants were just as bad. "Raven, is there something the matter?" my sister chimed before I jumped up and looked over sweat dropping. "I am perfectly fine Melody- don't worry about me. I was just thinking of something funny is all?" I lied and from the look on Sebastian's face I knew he caught me in it.
"And what might be funny?"
"Huh?"
"You said you were thinking of something funny- what was it?"
"Yes lady Raven- I'm sure we'd all love to hear whatever you thought was funny." I froze mid step as the others passed by. 'Maybe if I don't move they'll forget everything I just said,' I thought, but to no prevail they all stopped and turned to look at me. "Well?" Ciel chimed giving me his careless blank stare. I coughed into my hand, "honestly forget I ever said anything-"Ciel chuckled quietly before turning back around and went on his way with the others. I let out a sigh of relief, 'well at least I got off scot-free on that one,' I thought and hurried up on my way after them. "Some peace and quiet does sound nice," I heard Ciel say knowing I had missed something as we came to a set of doors.
Stopping, we waited for Sebastian to open them up only to find inside a messy room and Ciel's aunt along with another girl and two other men rummaging through his thinks. I stood there mouth opened as I watched. "Goodness sake, where do they keep the tea in this house," Madam Red chimed slightly annoyed. "I can't find it either," an Asian man who was well known by the name of Lau chimed as he held a vase in hand. Looking over at the other five I saw their faces twist into a rather mortified look (if only I had one of those cameras that were all the rage right now, I could have a picture to cherish the funny moment. "Don't be silly, of course it's not in there," madam red chimed as she looked over at Lau. 'Maybe if we turn around now they won't spot us, and we can pretend as if we were never here, 'I thought before being interrupted by Ciel.
"MADAM RED? LAU? WHY ARE YOU HERE!" he sounded rather aggravated now. Even more so than he had been earlier. Madam red and Lau turned and looked towards us and as if they thought they had done nothing wrong spoke up.
"Ciel? You're early dear."
"Your sudden appearance here in town must mean-"
"The queen's guard dog has a new scent to follow," Ciel stood there with a hard face washed on to it as he stared the two over. "Oh and you've brought visitors with you?" Lau chimed before a flash of red came towards us and gather me and melody up into a very very tight bear hug? Oh and did I say very? Because it was so tight I think I might have been choking to death. "Hello girls! I haven't seen you in weeks. You both look absolutely lovely today," Madam Red went from being in a serious mood to a very chipper, happy woman. "Ack- Madam red! Put them down this instance! You're going to kill them if you hug them any tighter!" Ciel screamed as mine and melody's souls began to be squeezed out of our body. I stood there helplessly as Demetri and Lucian stood there just watching. Demetri's face empty of emotion and Lucian stood there with an empathetic look on his face. Nice to know we have such caring butlers.
Loosening her grip madam red let us drop and turned to her nephew, "Oh come now Ciel- no one has ever died of a hug," she made it sound more like a question then a comment. Figurally though melody soul returned to her body as mine slowly began to fly away, "Not just yet," Demetri chimed as he pushed my soul back into my body and I sat up gasping for air. "I think I just saw my life flash before my eyes," Lucian just stood there still not saying a word.
"So why did you bring theses lovely young darlings along my dearest nephew?" Ciel stood there getting more aggravated by the second.
"Does it really matter why Madam?"
"Of course it does young earl, you never bring along visitors with you. This must be a very special occasion."
"Hardly," Ciel answered as he made his was over to a chair and sat down to rest, "Sebastian can you please clean up this mess?"
"Right away sir-"Sebastian replied as he quickly picked up everything and put it back into place but at a semi normal human speed. As I pushed myself up off the ground I followed my sister and the other two over and also took a seat before Ciel sent his butler to make us some tea. I hope it was nothing horribly weak, I hated weak tea. It was one of my many pet peeves. "You never answered Lau's question Ciel dear, why did you bring along Raven and Melody? Are they helping you with a case?" Madam red asked giving away that she was obviously one of the many gossiping nobles in London, Oh how I hated their kind.
"No for your information madam, their actually here to have tea with the queen."
"Tea with the queen?!"
"That's a very high honor, but why would the queen want to have tea with them? No offense dears,"
"None taken," Melody chimed with a smile before Ciel spoke for us, "because their father once worked under her majesty and because she didn't know their father had daughters until now, she thought it would be nice to meet the Ares to the Valentine family." I rolled my eyes, he really needed to do some more digging he just kept making himself look worse and worse as a detective. Infact- it was starting to sound like his butler did all the work for him while he sat around doing nothing. Only one person can be an airs to a family fortune, the other was s.o.l and left with nothing which in this case was me. "Oh, I didn't know Jaiden worked under the queen, what was his job?" Madam red began to pry into business that wasn't meant for her to hear, nor was it meant for Lau to hear but I guess Ciel couldn't just leave them in the dark even though it would have been best for it to be so.
"Their father was known as the queen's song bird- a very dark title to have been given and still to this day is,"
"I don't believe you Jaiden couldn't have been her song bird- he seemed far to kind hearted and more a family man than-"Madam Red cut off her sentence as she glanced over at my sister and me. There was something that we were being left out of. "Then what?" melody spoke up as everyone in the room went silent which made it more of an addiction to find out. Turning my attention towards Ciel, his aunt and Lau I decided to speak up, "Our father wasn't as sweet and innocent as everyone thought he was, was he?" I asked all eyes in the room turned to me surprised I had said such a thing as if I was tarnishing the memory of my father.
Here's the thing I knew my father wasn't an innocent man from the get go for two reasons. One when he wasn't busy with running the family company and "work" he would always take me into his study and teach me ways to co people out of their things with tricks only he knew about and two sometimes his business partners would come by and I would sit outside his study listening to the conversation they would have while mother and Melody coped by painting with one another. "What would make you say that?" Madam red asked as if we were off the subject now.
"Honestly- you all need to learn how to lie better? Unlike melody I spent time around my father when he wasn't busy I know the things he was capable of but he was still my dad so I never saw him any different no matter what he was capable of cause even if he had a dark history behind him he still treated melody and me like his kids and I knew he loved us. In fact I am certain he did his job because he loved us and wanted to keep us all safe. Melody and I aren't as oblivious as you think we are, we can take the truth no matter what it may be so please do enlighten us what his job was as Queens's song bird." More silence consumed the room as Ciel, Lau, and Madam Red exchanged looks.
"Your father was given the title as the queens song bird because from witnesses who lived through his work have said, he would whistle or hum a tune and just before he would get his target he'd go quite like a bird would when danger was afoot. He was the most feared out of everyone who worked under the queen because of how accurate he was."
"What are you try to say? That our father was a killer?"
"Yes- and I'm sorry you had to find out this way. There was probably a good reason why you're father never mentioned it to you before his death?
"Our father was always over protective; if he was in that line of work then he was bound to have enemies out for his life. He probably kept it from us because he wanted to keep us safe," Melody chimed softly her lovely bright blue eyes turned down at her soft, perfect white skin as she folded her hands together. I'm going to take my sisters side on this one cause she did have a very good point.
Anyone in that line of work was bound to have enemies unless of course they were smart enough to cut all ties to the person they were sent to kill. The only reason U know this fact is because I've learned from personal experience unlike my sister who doesn't know of the dark deeds I've committed.
I was seven when I committed my first murder and afterwards I learned never to let any witness live to see the next light of day for it only put you between a rock and a hard place. Now don't get me wrong, I'm not a heartless killer I don't kill for pure enjoyment or the rush- In fact I only kill people who threaten my father's company he worked so hard to keep afloat in his waking life and people who harm my sister and our servants. Besides I give them all quick deaths, but I guess you can take my intentions however you please. I still see them as good though.
Here's the funny thing though, to this day no one knows what has happened to the people I personally placed justice upon. It's far too bad I'm not mean and put Ciel out of business as the queens watchdog, it looks like it would be such fun, but sadly for the better good I'd rather keep my doings a secret from the others for if anyone had found out I'd be arrested and executed. So let's keep this dark secret between us, shall we?
I chuckled quietly before looking up at Ciel, his aunt and Lau, "I guess that would make sense though, I mean our mansion is hidden below a high hill from the living world," I said as Sebastian came in with a tray filled with tea and crackers for his master and his guests and began to pass them out. I stood as he reached me.
"I appreciate the gesture, but I'm not exactly in the mood for tea right now," I said politely to him quickly turning my head to the floor, a light blush flushing my cheeks. Why was it every time I was close to Ciel's butler did my heart began to race abnormally? He wasn't human, and even if he was I was 12 and a noble while he was a butler to a noble. The community of nobles would look down on such a thing if a servant and a noble got together. Infact it would have probably shun the whole family that noble was part of if it had happed. I questioned my emotional state when I was around him as I glanced back up Sebastian giving me what looked to me to be some kind of sympathetic look behind him everyone else sat there staring at us sipping their tea. "Come on Raven- it's actually a rather tasty brew Sebastian has made just one cup?" My sister question I sighed and shook my head.
"I'm fine really- besides we'll be seeing the queen for tea later anyways, I'd rather not fill myself up right now."
"Oh that's right- it actually slipped my mind about that," Melody answered setting her cup on to her saucer as if I had made a point and didn't want to be disrespectful when we went to meet the queen herself.
"Melody its fine, you can enjoy your cup- I'm just not thirsty right this second, besides I want to go explore jolly ol London," I gave my sister a reassuring smile, "What time were we exactly supposed to be at the queens palace?"
"2- Raven I'd rather you stay here with us, it's not exactly safe for a proper young lady to run around London alone- especially with the murders that have been happening lately."
"Is that all you're worried about? Posh- Jack the ripper only attacks in the dead of night- there have yet to be any murders to happen in the bored of day light,"
"The key word there is yet…" Ciel chimed his two sense in as he sipped his tea, "Besides you're sister has a point its quiet dangerous for a young noble girl to wander London alone. If Jack the ripper doesn't get to you then someone with a black past is bound to."
"You never let me finish what I was saying my dear earl- what I was going to say, was I won't be alone because I will be taking my butler with me," I said motioning towards Lucian who stood there quietly staring at Madam reds butler( Grell I believe was the name she had given him? What an odd name that was.) It almost like the two were staring at each other as if knowing who the other was. But that was impossible- Lucian was a reaper…..Grell- from first glances, was obviously a terribly horrible servant- the look was washed on to his face. It was obvious that no matter what task was given to him he would find some way to mess it up. I kind of felt bad for madam red to have such a poor servant at her side. But I could see something between the two that even I found rather odd. They obviously shared a dark secret. Now what it was I had no clue, but that didn't mean I would try to figure it out before any of the others.
Grabbing a hold of my butler's arm I began to pull him towards the door snapping him back in to reality. Before anyone could say a word in reply to me Lucian and I were long gone on our stroll in London.
-Ciel Phantomhive-
"Her butler?" I asked as the door slammed behind raven and turned my head to melody, "You have two butlers? I thought he was your family's footman," I said slightly confused knowing full well each noble family had a series of servants to tend to their needs. I blinked as melody sighed almost embarrassed that her sister had blurted that out.
"She hired him without my permission when she was in the hospital. She said she did it because Demetri only tended to me. Honestly has only on trial right now- I don't exactly trust him because like I said she meet him in the hospital," I sat there mouth ajarred as Melody explained this.
"She met him in the hospital and agreed to allow him be her butler? Now why would your sister be so insane as to hire someone she only just met?"
"I think she still maybe suffering from her injury and it's a moment of insanity. I'm actually hoping she comes too soon and fires him before something bad happens," she said sounding rather disappointed in such a matter of affairs of her sisters. I washed the look of shock of my face and sighed letting my butler pour me some more tea. " I guess I'd worry to if I were in your position and had a sister who was dumb enough to hire a stranger she only just met in a hospital," I agreed before Madam red decided to change the subject altogether.
"I don't see the problem at all- her butler seems rather kind and very handsome at that. It's no wonder she hired such a cutie! But enough about them, I'd love to get to know you Melody dear- I only met you once when I was tending to your sister in the hospital and we never actually got to speak cause of how much of emotional wreck you were," I sighed- my aunt was more blunt than usual. Just the way she said that sounded rather disrespectful- she did know she was talking to the daughter of a duke right? Melody gave my aunt the sweetest and purest of smiles I have ever seen. Even Lizzies wasn't as pure as hers.
For a set of sisters I was surprised by the way they acted. One was cold and distant and the other was friendly and kind, but even with the different personalities it was obvious to see how close the sisters were. The sick one playing the stronger twin and the strong twin playing the I guess in a sense the sick twin- they were almost mirror reflections of the personality the other had It was odd to witness such an event. I sat there minding my own business glad that the conversation went from me having a case to the sisters.
"Me? Oh there's really not much to know about me, really I'm just like everyone else madam."
"Oh come now dear- nobody is completely normal. There must be something exciting in life for you besides meeting the queen later."
"Like what?"
"Well what kind of things do you like to do for fun?" my aunt asked. Melody sat there contemplating the question for a few minutes.
"I love to paint, I'm actually rather good at it to."
"Oh? Wasn't your mother an artist?"
"Yes," melody answered with a nod and a sweet smile, "And my father was a musician-which was who my sister took after." Madam red blinked at the mention of Melody's and Ravens father almost as she recalled something from her past. I continued to watch in silence as this conversation unfolded, behind me stood my butler Sebastian who listened in as well.
"I remembered the music Jaiden use to play- such entrancing music- everyone would never match his talent. They all played in his shadow." Melody nodded in reply.
"Indeed- our father like my sister was a musical prodigy that everyone loved dearly. When news of his death struck London I almost wanted to say that all of London went into mourning for loosing such a heartfelt musician. He died a day before our 4th birthday and said he would write me and raven a song but died before he could finish it. Losing our father was the reason why my sister is the way she is today and because he was such a huge idol in her eyes she didn't want to let his legacy die and taught herself how to play any instrument she can till she became flawless at it like father was." Melody's eyes turned to the ground sadly as she spoke highly of her father and how close him and her sister was. It wasn't jealousy that struck her, no- it was actually sympathy for her own sister. I stared at melody for what seemed like hours to me as I recalled a memory from my past of a little girl who was introduced to me at a dance my father had taken me to. She was as shy as I was and was the first girl had thought was cute and that night we reeked so much havoc by accident that we ended up being punished and placed in corners at opposite ends of the room for the rest of that evening till that party had ended but we still entertained each other. It was far too long ago that I had forgotten the face of the girl and even when I recall that memory I can never remember the name she had introduced herself with. But just the way Melody acted she reminded me of that little girl, it was the only good memory I had from my childhood to keep me going. Still I had hope Id find that girl again one day. Dead or alive I will see her again and say thank you.
"Ciel?"
"Young master?"
"Ciel darling?"
"Young master earl?" I heard someone calling out to me and shook my head snapping back to reality, blinking absently before knowing I had returned from my trip down memory lane. "Huh?" I blurted out before looking over everyone in the room, "Ciel- I am going to be on my way now. So I will be back later this evening," Melody chimed as I sat there just looking at her unable to speak for a bit.
"Oh- alright, I wish you the best of luck with the queen- she can be quiet the character."
"Thank you for the warning- I'll keep it in mind," Melody answered with a giggle before her and her butler left. I was beginning to have second thoughts about giving melody that letter from her majesty- let alone regrets about letting her good knowing full well what their meeting would consist of and Melody seemed to pure to have her hands covered in the blood of the underworld. Why was I feeling as if I was sending melody and her sister off to their own funerals? I should be feeling any kind of emotion for anyone. So why now am I feeling this way?
-Raven Valentine-
Lucian and I wandered London for what seemed like hours window shopping. I felt like I did when I was a little girl out with her family. The only time my parents would let me outside would be on my birthday once a year. They would always take me and melody out into London so we could each pick out one gift. Melody would always pick out the clothes so shed look nice for the part while I would run off on my own and stare at the windows of toys stores staring at the items they had in the window in awe. Toys were all I had when I was left home alone with the servants. They were far too busy with chores to play with me so I was stuck playing with whatever toys I had.
I can remember one day in particular that made me the happiest girl in the world but at last I sighed as I stood there before the abandoned store staring in at the boarded up windows and doors. 'Things never last forever I guess,' I thought to myself as I stood there recalling the day it was yesterday. The man who use to work there was such a sweet guy. I wondered what had ever happened to him. The dolls he made were such lovely things he was even nice to make my sister a doll out of the kindness of his heart because he thought if one got one the other should have as well. Two twin sisters with identical dolls that sit in their rooms today. Still As new looking as the day they got them. The memory of that day swam through my head before I was called to and turned around to see my sister and Demetri emerging from a carriage.
Has it really been that long since I left the Phantomhive town house? It seemed like I only left a few minutes ago. I stood there a few moments before I walked towards her. "Melody Why aren't you with Ciel?" I heard myself ask, melody gave to a twisted look.
"What do you mean why aren't I with Ciel? It's time to head to the queens palace for tea,"
"Already?"
"Yes silly- Did you lose track of time?" she asked with a slight giggle, "Honestly Lucian you should have been keeping track of time."
"I was Lady Melody- but lady Raven seemed distracted shortly after we left the town house I tried to pull her back to reality but she listened to nothing I said."
"Oh is that so?" Melody asked as she turned her attention to me, "Raven it's not nice to ignore people, especially not ones who are your servants,"
"Sorry- I was just taking a walk down memory lane is all? Remember when mom and dad would bring us to town to pick out our birthday presents?"
"How could I not? You were always the happiest in the world when they did that. It was the only time I ever saw you smile."
"Do you remember the day we were going to turn four? How I ran out of the clothing shop because it was begging to get late and I had yet to pick out the present dad and mom use to promise us?"
"Yes, father saw that you were gone when we came out and ran outside after you franticly calling for you and asking everyone he saw if they saw you." I looked down- that was actually the first day I think I had ever saw my father angry with me. It kind of scared me to even remember how furious he was with me after he found me standing outside the doll shop staring up at the loveliest dolls I had ever seen. He demeanor changed so quickly when he saw the shop owner come out and talk to our father that I had actually thought he had forgotten about what I had done but just as soon as we left he was back to being mad at me. With a heavy sigh I turned my attention back to my sister and smiled at her weakly. "Dad was really mad at me that day and still to this day I feel he died mad at me for how I acted," I paused a moment-"It's almost that time, isn't it?" Melody stared at me long with a sympathetic look before looking at the ground sadly.
"Yes- it is almost that time-"
"I figured it was, it'll be 9 years ago on our birthday."
"I know- but let's not think about that now okay? We have to be on our way or well be late for tea with the queen." Melody said happily quickly changing her mood as she grabbed my arm and pulled me towards the carriage Demetri stood by waiting for us to get in to. With on swell push I was inside the carriage on the floor with my legs hanging out of the carriage while my sister's butler helped her inside and over me she took a seat. I sat up pulling my legs into the carriage and rubbed my head.
"Did you really have to push me inside?"
"Hahaha- sorry about that but you know how I get when we go to meet a really important person, now get up. You'll ruin your new dress." I rolled my eyes at my sister and got up off the carriage floor as Demetri shut the door and climbed to the driver seat a top with Lucian. He must really not trust him.
Taking a seat I got rubbed the side of my face and looked at my sister who quietly sat across from me, ankles crossed. Legs leaned to the side and hands folded neatly in her lap like she was a queen on her way to a party. I almost envy her beauty. To see that so many love her it kind of hurts me deep inside. I'm guessing it is because I know I would never be as lucky to find someone who loved me like she could. We sat quietly the whole ride to the queen's palace and to our surprise one of the queens servants were outside awaiting our arrival.
Melody climbed out of the carriage with Demetri's help and headed over to a man dressed in white with white hair. "Forgive me, but we aren't late are we?" she asked sounding a bit worried the man looked down at her as I made my way over to my sister. "Lady Melody and Lady Raven valentine, am I not correct?" he asked, the two of us stared at him and nodded our heads. A shiver ran down my spine. There was something dark about this man, but what it was I had no clue.
His face was stern for a few moments before he twisted it into a rather awkward smile, "NO no- you are not late. In fact you're very early, my name is Ash Landers by the way and I am her majesties head butler" Melody let out a sigh of relief almost happy to hear that news but I wasn't very trusting of this man. If we were early then how'd he know to be outside? Was the only question that stumped me this very moment? "now if you two young ladies would please follow me I shall take you to her majesty so that we can start," He said as he turned towards the palace doors and pulled them open melody giggled a quiet okay and started in after him I followed behind with Demetri and Lucian.
Inside maids and male servants bustled about in a hurry as if their jobs were on the line if they didn't finish them in a strict time line. I glanced around curiously wondering if this was how busy it would get day in and day out every day. It kind of made me feel bad for her majesty because of all she had to deal with. I mean yes my sister and I were the daughters of a former duke and yes we had a village to keep under control but the queen was in charge of all of England which must have been very stressful. TO run a whole kingdom alone and not have a signal chance for any free time I would probably die if I was given a position such as that.
Anyways quietly we followed the man out in to the very vibrant colorful garden and towards what looked to be a lovely tea set, set out upon a nicely set up table with three seats rested around it. Two were set to one side and one was set to the other alone and sitting there looked to be a woman in a very beautiful gown her face covered by a vail. I froze a moment almost as if something felt rather strange about this whole thing. I couldn't tell what it was but something was telling me to turn and walk away that this meeting would not only bring the end of me but also the end of my sister. I felt like I had fell into some kind of trance before I felt Lucian's hands touch my shoulder and turned my head up to him blinking almost oblivious.
"Are you alright lady raven?"
"Alright?" I questioned shaking my head before giving Lucian a smile, "Yes I am alright- sorry I guess I'm just kind of anxious to meet her majesty is all. I'm fine," I said to him reassuringly. He returned the smile and nodded, "Okay then lets catch up with the others. I can promise you the queen is not as special as you think she is. She's just like everyone else." I nodded back biting my tongue as we started walking again catching up to the others and took our seats. Behind the person I'm guessing was the queen was the man who showed us the way to her, Ash Landers.
"Your highness these are the daughters of duke and duchess Jaiden and Samara Valentines," The man said respectfully bowing to the queen before turning back to us our two servants standing behind us in a very respective manor. "Now forgive me but I will be speaking for her majesty this evening for she isn't feeling quiet well, but rest assure everything I say is all from her."
"I understand. It's nice to meet you your majesty," Melody stood up and curtsied to the queen motioning to me to do the same and as much as I thought it was stupid I stood and followed my sisters example before taking my seat. "So the letter we received from you said you thought it was time we found out what kind of work our father did when he wasn't home with us?"
"Yes, and I'm surprised you want to get straight to the point and skip all formalities miss raven,"
"Sorry- It's a bad habit, when I get around someone really important to the world I kind of get really uneasy."
"OH? And why is that?"
"I guess you could say I'm worried I'll say something wrong and have all of the world turn on me." I shrugged.
"Well no need to be uneasy here,"
"Thank you for that reassuring comment," I deadpanned glancing away with the slightest roll of my eyes before my sister stomped down hard on my foot beneath the cloth that covered the table and I bit down hard on my lip so that I would stop myself from screaming in pain. As it slowly ceased I released my bottom lip from the strain of my teeth biting down hard on it and let a single thin line of blood run down my chin. "My dear are you alright?" Ash asked as I reached up and wiped the blood off.
"Yes I apologize, I'm just nervous is all. It's not every day a petty noble gets to meet the queen of England," I said with a slight laugh. My sister continued to smile. "Hardly petty- you are part of a very respectable noble family seeing as your father worked close and under her majesty herself. Now before we get to business I ask you now to please try to refrain from any rude comments or any comments at all until I have explained why she has asked for you to be here today." What a mouth load, I thought butlers were supposed to keep quiet and do whatever it was their master had ordered? This guy he just kept talking- it was rather annoying but I had to please my sister and be respectful in the present of the queen.
After a set of tea and cookies and an intriguing conversation we began to get down to business.
"Now as the letter might have told you you're here because her majesty figured it was high time that you both learned what your fathers job was when he was a live and I am certain the earl Phantomhive had explained to you some of the things he did am I not correct?"
"Yes. Ciel explained that our father was a- I believe he put it as an assassin?" Ash nodded at my sister's reply.
"That is correct, he was known as he majesties song bird. Originally his title didn't have a name but those who came across him in a case he and the earl Phantomhive had that lived found he would always hum a tune before he would make his kill shot. Your father was a very deadly man- but he only did what he had to- to keep all of London safe not to mention you to so don't think that we are calling him a criminal or talking low of him."
"No we completely understand- Living with our father we learned at a very young age the things he did was only to keep us safe so we both understand that our father had a very good reason to do the things he did. Isn't that right Raven?"
"Of course, No matter what anyone says our father will always be seen as our hero in our minds. Even on our death beds we will think no less of him. But what does his past have to do with us?" I asked curiously as I grabbed up my tea cup and tilted it ever so slightly to my mouth and took a sip as I watched the vailed woman tug gently on Ash's sleeve and he leaned in to her to see what she had to say to him before standing straight back up. "Her majesty wishes for your father's legacy to live on and the only way that could possibly happen is if one of you step into his shoes and take his place as the queens song bird."
All went silent and I could see Demetri tense up ever so quickly when the words fell from Ash's mouth. My sister sat unable to connect the words together as if she was hearing a different language. I on the other hand sat there staring at the two the tea cup still to my lip as I raised an eye brow. To kill for profit? I heard myself think, I only did it for free to protect my family and friends but if it helps to put away people without getting arrested and executed for it not to mention bring in even more money than before who wouldn't take such a position? I set down the tea cup and place my folded hands in my lap before I took a deep breath and just as I went to open my mouth another voice besides mine spoke.
"We'll do it-" I turned to my sister in shocked surprise. Never in my life did I ever expect to hear my sister agree to such a trivial task. She was pure, clean of any sin what so ever why would she now agree to such a job that actually tainted your soul? I blinked in shocked as she reached out her hand and grabbed my hand smiling. "It's the least we could do to pay respects to our father," It was obvious to see she didn't want any part of it but almost as if she could read my mind she knew that it was something I could see myself living for. I turned my head down to the ground and sat there in silence sadly wondering what my sister was getting herself into. It was my job to keep her safe. Wasn't it?
Ash smiled down at the two of us big. "Miss Raven are you as well in for this?" I looked up and nodded my head. "Yes," I answered quietly tightening my grip around my sister's hand. There was no way in hell I was going to let my sister go in this alone especially seeing as this was the begging of her losing the pureness to her very soul.
"Excellent- then we will hold a ceremony in a few weeks for you to dub you both as the queen's official song birds. Until then you will be placed on the same case as the Earl Phantomhive. You two have heard of the murder Jack the Ripper, correct?"
