A pictureframe shatters upon impact with the floor. Mindy jumps at the sound but doesn't cease in shoving her clothes in a large duffel bag.

"Mortals provide such entertainment."

Mindy narrows her eyes. "Shut up."

"Willing to slaughter those who gave them life..."

Mindy grabs every cent to her name from a drawer in her dresser. "Shut up!"

"You wanted her to die."

Mindy grabs a vase and throws it at Loki's head. In an instant he has her dangling off the floor by his hand around her throat. His glare sends chills down her spine. She would shrink under his gaze if his grip wasn't as firm.

"I gave you life out of generousity, I may end it if and when it pleases me. Do not forget your place mortal. You. Are. Mine."

"I did what you wanted, you did what I wanted, we're even."

Loki smirks. "Shall I tear your strong little heart from your chest?" Mindy frantically shakes her head. "Then perhaps you should not fight he who owns your very existence. Once you slaughtered your mother, you gave your life to me. Put your faith in me. I suggest you do not go against me, pet. Do not test me, I am not always as patient as tonight."

Loki drops Mindy and she hits the floor with a thud. She gasps for air as Loki vanishes before her very eyes.

...

Three years later...

...

"Higher!"

Mindy laughs as she pushes the six year old girl higher on the swing set.

"Hold on!"

Elizabeth laughs as she soars higher on her swing. Mandy spots a figure out of the corner of her eye and turns to get a better look. An eerie chill runs down her spine when she sees nothing. Not a soul in the park but them.

Mindy lets the swing gradually come to a stop. Elizabeth looks at her in confusion.

"Why'd we stop, Minty?"

Mindy forces a smile even though she is unable to shake her feeling of unease.

"Mindy."

Elizabeth smiles. "Nuh huh. Minty."

"We should leave."

Elizabeth frowns in confusion. "But David isn't supposed to come till lunchtime. He told me so."

Mindy glance back to where she senses a presence. "Its only three blocks. We'll walk home. Come on."

Mindy grabs Elizabeth by her hand and leads her out of the park. Elizabeth struggles to match Mindy's quick pace.

"You're scaring me."

Once their apartment is in sight, Mindy slows to a stop. Elizabeth looks around in a panic before Mindy rests a hand on her shoulder.

"We need to get home."

"Why?"

"I can't tell you."

"Why?"

"It's grown up stuff, you wouldn't understand."

Elizabeth looks down at her feet. "I can keep a secret."

Mindy looks around frantically before looking back to Elizabeth. "Just trust me. And please don't tell your brother about this."

"But Minty!"

"Please? We're almost home. I'll put on that show you like."

Elizabeth perks up and begins leading Mindy towards the house.

Upon arrival, Elizabeth is struggling to catch her breath. Mindy twists the locks on the apartment door as fast as humanly possible. Once secure, Mindy hesitantly looks out the peephole with shaking hands and staggering breath. When she finds them alone, Mindy lets out a small chuckle before sliding down the wall to the floor.

Elizabeth looks at Mindy with fear and hesitation in her eyes.

"Minty?"

Mindy straightens herself. "It's okay. I'm okay."

"What happened?"

"Nothing...I thought I saw someone...I'm just paranoid."

Elizabeth raises an eyebrow. "What does that mean?"

Mindy smiles softly. "I was scared for no reason. Please don't tell David. It's embarrassing."

After a few moments, Elizabeth hesitantly smiles back. "Okay...for a mermaid Barbie..."

Mindy grins. "Well, you drive a hard bargain, but I'll see what I can do."

...

As David steps into the apartment, he is greeted by the excited squeal of his younger sister. Elizabeth darts across the apartment to hug David around the waist, nearly knocking him back in the process.

"Look what Minty got me!" Elizabeth holds up her new doll. "Her name is Sarah and she is married to the snow king and they went on an adventure with Sammy!"

"Really?"

"Uh huh! And they took over the zombie kingdom together and...Minty made sandwiches."

David pats her head and chuckles before heading to the kitchen. She smiles he quickly spots Mindy setting the table. David sneaks up behind her and kisses her neck, making her jump in surprise. Mindy lets out a nervous laugh when she sees David. While running a hand through Mindys hair, he addresses the question on his mind since he arrived home.

"Is everything okay? You didn't have to walk home, I would've been there in an hour anyway."

"Yeah. She just got hungry so we headed back. Sorry, I should've called."

"It's fine. As long you both are okay."

David kisses his girlfriend on her cheek before turning and walking over to the plate of sandwiches on the counter. He grabs one and takes a bite. Mindy gives him a look before she holds up a plate. With a shrug, David returns to the table and takes a seat.

Mindy calls out to Elizabeth. "Lunch is ready!"

Elizabeth comes running into the kitchen. She takes a seat before immediately digging in. David smiles at her before reaching over to playfully rub Elizabeth's head. She swats his hand away before returning to her food. Mindy takes the last seat and takes a bite of her sandwich.

David looks up in excitement. "I have a surprise." He swallows his bite. "Guess where we're going this weekend?"

Mindy gets slightly wide eyed. "You didn't."

David smiles and nods. "We'll go down to the lake, rent a jetski..."

"I haven't rode one since I was eight. I used to drive it a around with my...thank you so much."
