...Three years ago...
Mindy sits on the dock over the lake, absently rubbing her stomach under her shirt. Over the last week she has attempted to put as much distance between her and her actions as possible. Now, she feels regret coursing through her veins. Making her question her life altering decision. David approaches her from behind and grabs her shoulder, making Mindy jump in surprise.
"Are you okay?"
Mindy nods after a moment in confirmation. "I've just been through a lot last week."
David sits down beside her. "I know what you mean. My aunt is a real pain in my ass, but you know what I do? I ask myself, what do I want to do...and I do it."
Mindy raises an eyebrow. "That has nothing to do with me." She pushes herself up to stand. "In fact, it's kind of arrogant to assume your problems can provide vital life altering information to complete strangers."
David stands and silently begins to walk away from Mindy. She notices this and calls out to him.
"Don't leave. That felt good. I've been on the road for days."
David turn back around to face Mindy. "Days?"
Mindy nods. "And you are kinda right. What's the point of living if you don't live? I used to say that when I was in middle school." She grabs the bottom of her shirt and pulls it up over head. "This is what I've been wanting to do for years." Mindy backs up a few steps before running off the dock and jumping into the water.
After a few minutes, she resurfaces. "What are you waiting for? The water feels great!"
David stares at the water with concern written on his face. "Is that safe?"
Mindy shrugs. "Who cares?"
"I think I'll pass."
Mindy points to a nearby sign. "It says it's fine. Jump in."
"Are you sure you're okay?"
"I've been through worse. I'll be fine. There's no point in crying over the past. What's done is done. I'm over it."
David raises an eyebrow. "Really? Maybe if you talk about it you'll feel better."
Mindy narrows her eyes. "No."
"Okay. Can I at least get a name?"
Mindy purses her lips before answering. "Mindy."
...present day...
At the lake two hours from their home, David leads the way down a winding path towards the lake. Mindy carries their life preservers and Elizabeth follows closely behind.
David holds his arms out in a grand gesture. "There it is." He points to the jetskis gathered by the dock. "I think we got the blue one."
Mindy smiles and approaches David as Elizabeth runs past them to the beach. David calls out to his sister. "Stay out of the water!"
Once satisfied that Elizabeth got the message, Mindy wraps her arms around David and rests her head on his shoulder.
"Thank you for this. I love the water."
David smiles. "How long has it been?"
"Three years on Tuesday."
"That is so weird."
"I have a good memory."
David smirks. "Sure. No mental issues at all."
Mindy narrows her eyes. "I'm the least crazy person I've ever seen."
"That's scary."
Mindy playfully shoves David. "You have no idea."
David hands Mindy the key to the jetski and she pecks him on the cheek before running over to Elizabeth. Mindy quickly secures a life preserver around Elizabeth.
David walks over to the two. "Do you still remember how to drive these things?"
Mindy chuckles. "I've had to learn much more complex things than ride a jetski."
"But still. I think we should ride first to make sure it's safe. We can come back and get Elizabeth after that."
Mindy smiles at David. "You are in for a treat."
David smirks and raises an eyebrow. "Oh really?"
"I'll make sure to jump it higher, just for you."
David frowns. "Not too high."
Mindy smirks. "Driver jumps as high as they want. You drive, you can put people to sleep."
David sighs and turns to Elizabeth. "Be good and stay here. We'll be back in a few minutes."
...
Mindy carefully steers the jetski to the shore before pulling out the key. She looks behind her at David, who has a death grip around her waist. David hesitantly let's go and Mindy laughs.
"It wasn't that bad."
David narrows his eyes. "I told you not to jump that wave."
"We only went a couple feet."
Mindy looks over at the shore at Elizabeth. Upon seeing the strange look on her face, Mindy hops off the jetski and walks through the shallow water to the shore. She walks over to Elizabeth while David struggles to get off the jetski. As she approaches, she notices the terrified look on the girls face.
"What's wrong?"
Elizabeth looks at Mindy wide eyed. "Who's standing behind me?"
Mindy frowns. "Nobody."
Elizabeth frantically shakes her head as tears well in her eyes. "His hand is on my shoulder. I can FEEL it."
Mindy begins to grow alarmed. "Maybe it's the wind..."
"I know someone's behind me! I just know!"
"But..."
"I heard footsteps."
David walks over with concern on his face. "What's wrong?"
Elizabeth lets out a sob. "There's someone behind me!"
David raises an eyebrow. "What did I tell you about lying?"
"But..."
"Do we need to go home?"
Elizabeth rapidly nods her head. "I'm scared."
David sighs in annoyance. "I hope you're happy. Everyone had to leave because of you."
