Libi couldn't quite remember what had happened. One moment, she was standing in the doorframe, the next, she was surrounded by medics, leaders, vague faces from her past... They all merged into one. A face stood out for her: Tom.
Tom, who was on the ground, performing CPR on Aneisha, crying his eyes out, begging his girlfriend to come back. She heard the voices talking to her; saw them examine her carefully, felt them try and take her away, but she was rooted to the spot, a bit like a tree.
Trees. There used to be trees everywhere; now there was nothing but fire and ash. The bodies of the dead lay scattered all around, some just melted and deformed, just pools of human and everything else. It should have disgusted her, but it didn't; she should have cried, like Stella was doing for her sort of nephew; she should have screamed and struggled, like Rosa was doing for Dan, poor Dan, how sad.
Instead she stood, completely unharmed, in this apocalyptic wasteland, hair blowing gently in the wind. She looked around, almost wondering if everything was a dream, until a hand came onto her shoulder, steering her away. Steering her away from where the medics were electrocuting Aneisha back to life, Tom crying hysterically, held back by Frank. From where Stella was holding Rosa, because she could barely look at her own son's face. From Keri and Zoe, who were just staring at Dan-what was left of him, anyway. Holding hands.
She broke free of the hand, and walked over to her sisters. No words were exchanged. No comments on how Keri was still the Mastermind. Instead, all three sisters sat on the ground, holding hands. They looked at each other, 3 redheads in a broken world, in a sick, twisted world, and they held hands.
Because that was the only thing they could do.
"Today, I honour those who saved their country."
A month after the 6/12, people all over the world were gathered around their TV's, where David Cameron was speaking. All over the world, people had rushed to help-had rushed to raise money to save those who could be saved, to bury those with proper respect. To save a 16 year old boy who didn't look 16 anymore. In fact he didn't look anything.
"I- No. I'm not reading this," he said, throwing the 3 page long speech over his shoulder. "Nobody wants to hear me ramble on about honour.
What you really want to hear is what happened. I was there, I will tell you myself. There were teenagers. A school of teenagers went in and faced KORPS."
A sharp gasp went up, along with muttering.
"One of them died."
"The name of the child was Kelly."
"Kelly was... is a wonderful girl. In the brief time I knew her, she was the brightest, smartest, most wonderful teen I had ever met. Most of them were shy. She took everything in her stride, made everything look easy. She was an angel.
My mother used to tell me that people only turned into angels once they died. That wasn't true for Kelly. Kelly was an angel, even before death. She went back in there to save a person she didn't know, knowing the threat that lay ahead of her. I told her, don't go in there and do you know what she said to me? She said, 'To live is to survive, but to survive is not to live. And today, I'm going to live, Mr Cameron. I'm going to live before I die.' And she ran back in."
Kelly's parents held each other silently, standing next to the Prime Minister. He addressed them.
"For her name, for her honour, I want to give you this." It was a medal and it read:
This medal is awarded to Kelly Anderson, for the acts of bravery and selflessness she displayed in the face of danger. May all follow her example, and strive towards a better future.
Kelly's mother sobbed slightly, tears drying on her face as she took the medal from David Cameron-and threw her arms around him. He returned the hug, remorse clearly written on his face.
Aneisha turned off her TV, turning to the others. She lay in a hospital bed, confined there ever since her heart stopped from the francium explosion. Tom hadn't left her side once, except to take a shower-and that was 2 days ago. She simply held his hand, too tired to talk or move. Usually she would only stay awake for half an hour, but today she had been up for nearly 3 hours-the doctors said it was a huge improvement.
"Why didn't you tell us?" whispered her parents, "We would have supported you every step of the way, in everything." They cast a glance at Tom. At first they hadn't been too comfortable with the two of them dating, but after seeing how devoted he was to her, they had relented.
Aneisha opened her mouth. "How's... Dan?" she asked Tom.
Tom shook his head. "They still haven't let anyone see him. Mrs... Miss Haynes and Mr Morgan have been hanging around there for days-"
"TOM!" shouted Keri, bursting in, red eyes flashing. "THEY'RE LETTING US SEE DAN!"
Both of them ran to the Red ward as fast as they could. Zoe and Libi were waiting there for them, and they shoved their way past waiting families and nurses as they struggled to get to Dan's bedside.
Dan gazed up at his best friend. "Tom...?" he croaked. Tom nearly looked away.
They had to do partial facial reconstruction on Dan, not to mention his bones-not his flesh surprisingly-had to be completely replaced. His hair was growing again, but it was darker somehow, and seeing his best friend like that made him want to cry. So he did.
"You're such a girl, Tupper," sighed Dan, every word an effort. "Crying like a hysterical woman." He punched his friend lightly on the arm.
"Speaking of hysterical women..." muttered Frank, and barely a second later, Rosa and Stella crashed into the scene through the window, shattered glass everywhere.
"Mum..."
Rosa went and took the seat Frank had vacated for her. Dan looked different, yes, but he wasn't- everything was exactly how it was before... it happened. She took her son's hand. It wasn't right for him, being so still and weak. It was frightening, and it shook Rosa to the core. Keri hovered behind her, as did Zoe and Libi.
A squeak made them all turn around. Aneisha was in a wheelchair, pushed by her mother. Silently, she pushed her daughter to the procession, and all of them just looked at each other, in the ward that had become so familiar, but was so strange.
This is basically a filler chapter, but it's necessary, because more drama is coming your way! The next one takes place when Dan and Aneisha can walk again, so that's, 2, 3 weeks later? Anything you guys want to see? Remember Keri's still the Mastermind...
