Lupin's eyes grew wide and he began choking on his chocolate. Oops, maybe I should've waited for him to finish eating before I brought it up. I waited patiently for him to stop coughing and swallow his food. "Excuse me?" he finally stuttered.
"It's okay, Lupin, I know." I reached forward to place my hand on his, but he drew his own hand away before I had the chance.
"Know what?" he sounded hysterical now. "I have absolutely no idea what you're talking about."
"You can drop the act, Lupin. I saw Snape give you that wolfsbane. I mean, honestly, I probably would've figured it out eventually anyway. You're always sick-"
"I told you, I have a bad immune system!" he cut in.
"Only during every full moon?" I asked, doubtfully. He was silent for a moment before he suddenly stood up and began collecting his things.
"I told Dumbledore this was a foolish idea! I knew it wouldn't last," he was muttering hysterically to himself.
I was shocked at how quickly he was moving around the room, throwing things into a large trunk. "W-what are you doing?"
He turned to me suddenly. "I have to leave!"
"What, why?" I was standing now, and I took a step towards him.
"Well the parents won't very well want a bloody werewolf teaching their children!"
"How would they know?" I was very confused.
He looked at me incredulously, yet slightly confused himself. "Because you're going to tell everyone."
"What? No I'm not!" I was shocked and hurt that he would think so lowly of me.
"You- you're not?" he was definitely confused by now.
"Of course not! How could you think that?"
"Because I'm a werewolf!"
"So?" I stepped closer to him and he took a step back.
"So?! I'm dangerous!"
I snorted, despite the seriousness of the conversation. "You're not dangerous, Lupin. I mean, you're taking your potion right?" I paused as he nodded. "And Dumbledore obviously doesn't think of you as a threat. He wouldn't have asked you to come and teach if he thought you were dangerous. He trusts you. And so do I."
He stared intensely into my eyes and I couldn't bring myself to look away. "How are you so okay with this?" he asked finally, sounding defeated.
"Because you're you." I smiled slightly and he just stared at me, wanting me to continue. I placed my hands lightly on either side of his face. "You're kind and gentle and sweet, and I know that you wouldn't hurt anyone or anything if your life depended on it. I know that you didn't ask for this to happen to you, and I am so, so sorry that it did. I can't even begin to imagine how awful it is for you. But what happens to you- what you change into twelve nights out of the year does not change what kind of person you are the other three-hundred fifty-three days. And I happen to like that person very much."
He looked shocked, like nobody had ever said anything like that to him before. He was shocked that I was so accepting of him, like he wasn't used to it, and I felt another pang of sorrow for the man in front of me. My hands were still cupping his face, and he looked into my eyes for a few more moments. I just stood there and waited for his response. Before I knew what was happening, I felt his lips on mine.
I was shocked, but I quickly recovered and eagerly began kissing him back. His lips were softer than I had ever imagined and despite the heat and passion of the kiss, he was incredibly gentle. His hands were in my hair and mine had moved to his chest. His hands then traveled down to my waist, pulling me closer to him. I could taste the chocolate on him and I was sure he could taste it on me, too. I wrapped my arms around his neck, trying to get as close as humanly possible. I let out a low involuntary moan, and that seemed to be what broke the spell. His hands let go of me so fast you would think that I was on fire. He moved away from me quickly, eyes wide, hands cradling his head.
"Ella, I'm so sorry! I can't believe I did that. Now I really have to leave." He started gathering his things again.
"What? No! It's okay!" I grabbed his arm, and he spun around to face me.
"It's not okay, Ella! I attacked you!"
"Don't be ridiculous! You didn't attack me! I wanted it!" I could feel myself blushing.
He looked as though he didn't quite believe me. "You did?"
"Yes." I was sure the blush would never leave my face now. "I like you. Very much."
"I'm your professor, Ella." He told me sadly.
"I know." I got closer to him, daring him to back away.
"We shouldn't have done that." He swallowed thickly.
"I know," I repeated softly. "It was nice though." I slowly moved my face closer to his.
"Yes. It was." He didn't back away so I lightly placed my lips on his. I didn't give him time to respond before I pulled back. His eyes were closed and he looked peaceful- more peaceful than I had ever seen him.
He opened his eyes slowly, boring into mine. "We can't do this."
"Why not?" I asked.
"You know why. I'm your professor and you're far too young. And I'm a werewolf."
"Look, Lupin, I don't care about any of that. We can be stealthy. Nobody will know, I promise. And I'm not too young. Age is nothing but a silly number, and you and I both know I'm more mature than my years give me credit for. I'm old enough to know what I want, and that's you. And I already told you I don't care that you're a werewolf, I swear I don't. You want this, don't you?" I paused, but he just stared at me. "I don't understand why you won't just let yourself be happy. We could be so happy."
I stared into his eyes, waiting for him to say something- anything. I wasn't going to back down. "Remus," he finally responded.
"What?" I furrowed my eyebrows.
He smiled slightly, which I took as a good sign. "Well, I figure that if we're going to do this, you should probably start calling me by my first name."
I grinned widely as he leaned in for another gentle kiss.
