Rapunzel couldn't sleep. Even if she would have had a pillow or something besides Eugene's shoulder to rest her head on, it was much too cold. She was pretty sure that Elsa was awake now in the cell beside them, because in the past few seconds it had become considerably colder. The suspicion was immediately confirmed as a clamor like clattering chains echoed off of the brick walls, and a frustrated cry followed.
Pausing in her pacing across the cell in an attempt to keep warm, Rapunzel looked at Eugene, sitting on the single stone bench. His arms were wrapped tightly around himself, but his lips were practically blue.
Rapunzel turned her head in the direction of Elsa's cell, and opened her mouth to say something. But she was interrupted.
A door creaked open from down the hallway, and just moments later the form of Prince Hans breezed by the cell. He pushed open the door to Elsa's cell, and Rapunzel could hear Elsa saying, "Why did you bring me here?"
"I couldn't just let them kill you." Hans' voice was saturated with pity, and Rapunzel and Eugene glanced at each other, knowing how fake it was. And for all they knew, Elsa didn't even know that Hans was a traitor.
"But I'm a danger to Arendelle. Get Anna!"
"I wish I could show everyone who's the real danger to Arendelle," Eugene muttered, a shiver rocking is body.
"Anna has not returned."
Rapunzel exchanged a worried look with Eugene. Had Hans found her? Killed her?
In the silence before Hans spoke again, a barely audible gasp and a slight rattle of chains could be heard.
"If you would just stop the winter, bring back summer…please."
Rapunzel felt her blood begin to boil. Hans was so good at acting. Yet, she knew better than to say anything. Whatever Hans was saying to Elsa could be important.
"Don't you see?" Elsa's voice was broken, faltering. "I can't."
Her anger vaporized into sorrow and pity. She reached across the cell and took Eugene's hand in hers. He stood and folded her in his arms, his body so warm that Rapunzel buried his face in his chest, though still listening attentively.
"You have to tell them to let me go!"
"I will do what I can."
"Yeah, right," Rapunzel muttered under her breath. Hans cast a scornful look into their cell as he passed by, but continued on down the hallway. The door slammed with finality.
Rapunzel pulled away from Eugene and walked to the cell door, pressing her face against the small square which served as the only view into the hallway. The bars were slick with ice and stung her skin, so she settled for resting her forehead against the wood.
"Elsa?" Her voice rebounded through the hallway and back at her.
"Who's there?" Just from those two words, Rapunzel knew that she was vulnerable and frightened.
Rapunzel could feel her lips twitching into a smile at the irony of it all. She had never suspected she would be meeting her cousin through the brick walls of Arendelle's prison cells. "I'm Rapunzel, your cousin. We've never met before, but I guess now is as good as any other time, so...hi."
The reaction was immediate. "Rapunzel?" There was a sound like the dragging of chains, and then a muted thump. Rapunzel thought she could hear something like a sigh, but it was too soft for her to tell what it was.
"Did they put you in chains?" Rapunzel wondered, talking in her gentlest voice, though she already knew the answer.
"Yes...I'm afraid they did. But-"
"Are you hurt?"
"No, I'm...I'm fine." There was a pause, as if she was waiting for Rapunzel to interrupt again. "Why are you here?"
"Prince Hans put Eugene and me- oh, Eugene!" She had momentarily forgotten his silent presence behind her. She spun and gave him a serious look. "Say hi."
Eugene rolled his eyes, but smiled anyway. "Hello, Your Majesty," he sighed, slumping back down onto the bench.
"Hans put Eugene and me in here after we tried to overthrow his plans to become King of Arendelle," Rapunzel continued. "I think we delayed him a little, but not for long."
Elsa heaved a great sigh of her own, and didn't respond for a few moments more. "Prince Eugene…I was such a fool. I should have listened to you."
"If it helps, I wouldn't have listened to me either. But don't blame yourself; Hans looks like the most innocent man in the world, and then suddenly he's standing over you with a knife. Literally."
