Rapunzel's teeth began to chatter as the temperature dropped. She looked back to see ice covering the wall that they shared with Elsa. Maybe calming her down would help the chilling air.
"Did he…did he try to kill me?" she asked in a soft voice before Rapunzel could speak again.
"We don't know what happened on the mountain," Eugene responded, "but there were two men in Hans' party who were bent on taking your life on their way back to Arendelle. I think Hans' plan is a little more long term."
"You saved me?"
Eugene shrugged, though only Rapunzel could see it. He had already told her about what he had seen and done in Hans' camp. "Eugene did," Rapunzel said.
"Thank you. I don't know how I could ever thank you enough." Elsa sighed. "I'm so sorry…about all of this. It's all my fault."
"No, it's not. Don't tell yourself that." For a quick moment, Rapunzel reflected on how similar her cousin sounded to herself. "You didn't make Hans do these things."
"But if it wasn't for me, none of this would have ever happened."
"If it wasn't for you, Anna would have married Hans and he would have gotten rid of you at his first chance," Eugene put in. Rapunzel gave him a warm smile, contrary to what she was feeling right now. It was getting colder by the second.
"Maybe the world would be better off without me anyway," she said, so quietly that Rapunzel could barely hear her. "You don't know how many times I've thought about that."
Rapunzel felt her chest tighten as emotion swelled up within her. "Elsa, Arendelle needs you. Anna needs you."
After a few silent seconds passed by, Rapunzel decided to leave her cousin to her thoughts. Maybe a few moments of reflection was all she needed. With a sigh she slumped onto the stone bench, chilled to the bone, and wrapped her arms around herself. It certainly wasn't getting any warmer.
"Rapunzel? Eugene?" The voice was Elsa's, and Rapunzel turned her head toward the doorway to answer.
"Yes?"
"Thank you."
A crackling sounded. Rapunzel looked up to see the ice growing thicker on the wall as the icy climate climbed to a peak.
Elsa was escaping.
