The prison door opened and shut, and the clomping of several boots echoed in the stone hallway. They murmured about Elsa, something having to do with treason and death. Ice was spreading over the wall between Rapunzel and Elsa, a few loose pieces of stone cracking off and tumbling to the ground. Elsa needed more time.

A thousand things ran through Rapunzel's mind; countless ideas that wouldn't work. The only option was to stall, even just for a second. But what...

Another stone fell from the wall.
"Eugene!" Rapunzel didn't care about keeping her voice down now. "Get ready to run!" Stooping down, she picked up a larger, sharper stone and ran to the cell's door. She reached her hand through the bars and swung her arm as hard as she could in the direction of the door's lock. Though she couldn't see what she was hitting, a loud scraping sound occurred, giving her hope. She swung again, but a prison guard grabbed her arm.

That was all the time she needed.

A huge explosion sounded from the next cell over and a group of guards rushed forward to Elsa's former cell, standing in awe. Her arm free, Rapunzel turned to see Eugene standing right behind her, a large, jagged stone in his hand. As she looked over his shoulder, she could see that part of the wall had collapsed into their cell, creating a mountain of broken stones. Elsa had provided a way for them to escape as well, though as Rapunzel saw Hans blur past their cell door, she wondered if they should follow him instead.

Eugene made the decision for her. He gently nudged her out of the way of the door, and with one well placed blow the cell's lock broke open.

"We have to follow him," Rapunzel insisted, pushing open the door. There were no guards in front of Elsa's cell, which probably meant that they were inside of it or had gone after Elsa. Either way, they weren't about to stay and check.

"Come on!" Eugene grabbed Rapunzel's hand and ran down the hallway and through the prison door. Though they had no idea in which direction Hans had gone, they were forced to stop anyway as they came to the castle's first carpeted hallway. Sharp icicles shot out of every wall, every which way.

Eugene turned to face Rapunzel and gripped the tops of her arms. "We can't follow Elsa," he said, as if reading her mind.

"Eugene-"

"Look at it out there!" He gestured to the window on their right, where dark clouds were gathered overhead and a raging snowstorm was making it more impossible by the second to see anything outside. "We couldn't even make it out there if we wanted to."

"But-"

Voices sounded behind her from the prison. Eugene tensed, and then swooped her up into his arms. He broke into a sprint, jumping over and dodging the dangerous needles of ice that stood in his path. More icicles began to push through the walls, making it even more difficult to maneuver.

"Ah!" Eugene exclaimed in pain as his arm collided with the point of an icicle.

"Eugene?" Rapunzel gripped his shirt in her fists.

"Just a scratch," he forced through gritted teeth. "I'll be fine."

They suddenly found themselves at the end of the hallway. Eugene paused for a second and looked around, but there was nowhere to go but up. With a sigh of resignation he took the stairs two at a time, panting hard. He ascended the next two stories up slower, as the prison guards didn't follow them.

"You can put me down now," Rapunzel said, her voice trembling as they reached the third flight of stairs. It was so cold now that her body began shaking out of control unless she wrapped her arms around herself.

Eugene nodded and set her carefully on her feet. He shivered and blew on his hands, rubbing them together and then placing them on Rapunzel's cheeks. "How's that?"

"Amazing," she sighed, though the warmth lasted for only a few precious seconds.

Eugene looked past her, down the hallway. "There might be a fireplace in one of these rooms. If we can get past the death-cicles."

Rapunzel smiled up at him. "Death-cicles?"

He shrugged. "It was the best I could come up with right now."
