CHAPTER 16: FORGOTTEN MEMORIES

Clary woke up with a sick feeling in her stomach.

You know that feeling where you know something is wrong?

Yeah. That feeling.

As soon as Clary opened her eyes, she saw an envelope on her desk, in her room.

He left! He broke his promise!

Though she had expected him to break it, it still left her feeling betrayed.

She opened the envelope and found a chain holding the Morgenstern ring on it.

She reread the letter again and again.

Finally, after what seemed lke hours, she climbed out of bed and put on shadowhunter gear, that was in the wardrobe. Then she attempted to tame her fiery red curls.

She pulled up her top, and peaked at her back.

Scars lay across her once smooth skin, and she felt a bit sad.

Get used to it! Shadowhunters always have scars!

She walked into the kitchen after putting the chain around her neck, and found Izzy and Simon cooking pancakes.

"Simon? Can Isabelle and I talk in private?" Clary asked.

Simon glanced at Clary, and she caught the hurt that flashed across his face.

"Sure, I'll just talk to Jocelyn in the sitting room," he replied.

As soon as Simon was gone, Clary glared at Isabelle.

"Did you know he'd do this?" Clary asked, her voice lacing anger.

"Yes," Izzy replied.

Fury surged through Clary. And before she knew it, she was yelling at Isabelle.

"And you never bothered to stop him?!" Clary demanded.

Immediately Isabelle was on the defence. "Even if I tried, he wouldn't listen to me. Once he sets his mind to something, there's no going back on it."

"You could of just tried! Even if you knew he might not change his mind!" Clary snapped.

Isabelle's eyes flickered with anger.

"You're not the only one worried about him, Clary! Do you not realise he did this for you?" Izzy shot back.

Clary blinked, and immediately felt guilty.

Ever since Jace met her, he'd been risking his life. Isabelle, Alec, Luke and Magnus had risked their lives to protect her.

Heck! Max had even died because of Valentine and Sebastian.

It's all my fault. Maybe I should just leave. Or give myself over to the Clave.

"You know, ever since Jace met you, we've been in trouble all the time," Isabelle told her.

"You're right," Clary said, nodding.

Isabelle blinked, as if realising what she'd just said.

Before isabelle could take back what she'd said, Clary was already speaking, "I was never brought up in the Shadow World, never knew about Downworlders, Shadowhunters or Demons. I never knew about fighting. So yeah, I'll just leave. I'm no use to anyone. I can't fight. And I'm just another weight on your shoulders. So, I'll just leave now."

"Clary! Come back!" Isabelle yelled.

But she was gone.

Clary walked towards the Accords Hall, feeling numb.

Why did her mom have to keep her away from the Shadow World? She didn't even train Clary how to defend herself! She just thought that Clary would always be protected in the mundane world!

She was halfway to the Hall, when somebody grabbed her arm, and pulled her into another hallway.

Clary tried to kick out at her attacker, but whoever it was, was well trained for keeping people in their grip.

"It's me Clary! It's Jocelyn! It's your mother!" Jocelyn hissed in Clary's ear.

Immediately, Clary stopped thrashing, and went still.

Jocelyn turned her around.

She had her hair up again, and her gear was also on.

"I overheard your conversation with Isabelle," Jocelyn said.

"Which part?" Clary asked, her emerald eyes glaring at her mother.

"The part about you not being brought up in the Shadow World, " Jocelyn replied.

"And?" Clary demanded, feeling exasperated now.

"You were wrong. I did train you to be a Shadowhunter, Clary. But every year, I got Magnus to take away the memory of it. But this year, I didn't bother training you, thinking you were safe anyways," Jocelyn told her.

Clary jaw dropped.

"How am I gonna get my memories back, then?" She asked.

Jocelyn smiled.

"The Book of White," she said.
