A/N: This might not seem relevant to the story but I thought it might be nice to have a look at what life is like on Earth during the attack. Hope you like it, it's so fresh it's still smoking.
With a precise blow he drove the meataxe through the chicken into the table below. He was in the middle of making a chicken soup when the first blast shook the building. From the lounge outside he heard screaming and with the meataxe in hand he rushed out of the kitchen. The lounge was in chaos, hundreds of people had been inside to have supper. Now cars had been pushed through the large windows which overlooked the streets and even a bus had found it's way inside. Below the cars and the bus he could see body parts sticking out.
All around the room he could see other people injured by the blast. Before he could panic another blast shook the room and part of the roof came down upon a group of people. Somewhere in the distance he heard the sirens sounding before they were cut of by another round of blasts. In the sky he could see a group of objects flying around and below them explosions bloomed up. As people from around the small town rushed to help those hurt in the blast all he could think of was his daughter whom he'd left at home. From down in the valley where the town was positioned he could see their house up in the hills, moments later an explosion bloomed up just shy of their house.
It took him just under a minute to get to his car, a leaf green Fiat, and as he went to open the door he dropped his keys on the tarmac. It took him another three minutes to get inside and start it, then he was of. As he came out onto the main street he saw a man crushed by a falling tree, but he only turned the steering wheel and drove by it. A few kilometers outside the town he turned of the big road and onto a small gravel road which led up to the village where their house lay.
As he turned around a hedge he saw a small green ball falling from the sky and a second later, a few hundred meters ahead, a car flipped over in an explosion which sent part of the road sliding down the side of the mountain. Without a second thought he twisted the steering wheel around and sent the Fiat plowing through a wooden fence and onto a pasture above the damaged road. In the rear view mirror he could see one of the strange objects flying in behind him and green orbs begun to fly by the small car as he skidded through the mud and cow dung towards the village on the other side, where the orbs hit small explosions sent mud and dung flying while leaving potholes in the ground.
From somewhere to his right a bull came charging and pounded into his pursuer just as it flew down to just above the ground. With his attacker occupied with the animal he smashed through another gate and back onto the road, with one mirror less and windscreen wipers swinging back and forth. Just up ahead he could see their small village set aflame but once in their driveway he saw their house. Two of the supporting walls had collapsed when the neighboring house had come crashing down. Below some rubble he could see the next door boy's body sticking out, the head was crushed bellow, and his parents lay next to each other with large pools of blood spreading from them both.
"Honey!" He cried out in panic as he stood in what had been their living room but had been mixed with the neighbors attic.
"Dad, dad. I scared." She cried back as she came down a flight of stairs from his study.
"Everyone is sweetheart, but we know what to do when the alarm sounds right?" He said and lifted her up.
"We get to the big city." She said. She was only six but since the revelation of alien life and the possibility of an invasion by them had been made public the government had spent billions on creating an alarm system which could be heard in every corner of the country and to educate everyone of what they should do when it did.
"Good. Get in the car and we'll go." He told her.
"Dad, it stinks." She complained when they came up to it.
"We'll get it cleaned later. Now get inside." He hurried her. In the distance he heard the thing coming closer again.
"Ush. Can Kevin come too?" She asked, referring to the neighbor kid, as he rushed the car back onto the main street.
"He'll go with his family."
"Why are we going over Brunsbarry field?" She asked as another string of question bubbled up to the surface.
"Because the roads not as fun honey." He replied as the thing came against the car again. "Now Daddy needs to concentrate on driving so no more questions, alright."
From their left the thing approached again and the green orbs begun to fly by them, but at reduced speed and the few which hit the car only seemed to make dents, not the small explosions they'd done before. With dung spraying around the car they crashed through another wooden gate back onto the road, with the last mirror flying of at the same time.
As the car came back onto the main road he pressed the pedal down and they left the thing behind. But only a few minutes later three of the things flew over a hill and begun to follow them, again the green orbs begun to cause explosions around them. As the small Fiat jumped over a hill a swarm of yellow lights swooped past them in the opposite direction, straight into the things, causing them to explode.
"Dad." She shouted as he looked over his shoulder and tried to understand what was happening.
"Wha…" He said just as he janked his head back. He was cut of by the Fiat's impact with a semitrailer which had flipped over into an impact crater.
"Daddy, daddy." She cried as she shook his head back and forth.
"Easy sweetheart." He replied as he eased his eyes open. She was sitting on the inside of the roof while he hung upside down in the drivers seat. With some struggle he managed to free himself of the seat belt and with a bang he was down on the roof.
"I can't open the door dad." She complained.
"Try the ones in the back." He said as he tried to get his bearings.
"They won't work either." She said as she climbed under the back seat and opened the trunk. "We can go this way."
"Good girl." He said and crawled after her. Outside the car he could see several of the strange things lying around in pieces. This close he could recognize them as something he'd read about in a magazine a few years ago, the mysterious race their world had prepared to defend against had used fighters which looked like this. Still he saw no use in waiting around, they needed to get to the city which he could see a few kilometers away at the bottom of the valley. From somewhere inside the city he saw an explosion and a cloud of dust was thrown far into the air.
When they came into the city they felt a tremor and dust rushed in over the street and blinded them. In the distance they heard small explosions while they stayed low and he covered her mouth with his shirt.
"Dad, I don't like the smell." She said as he hurried her on.
"Breath through your mouth honey." He said as they saw bright lights flying back and forth on the street ahead of them. "Hush now."
When he peaked into the street he saw some sort of human/machine creature, ten, twenty, thirty, he couldn't tell, but they weren't far away and as a few fell to the lights coming from the other direction more walked over the bodies. Inside he felt panic filling his brain and he grabbed his girl and ran.
When he calmed down he didn't know where they were, but he saw buildings lying in ruins all around. Looking around he realized they were crouching behind an advertisement booth and the robot things were coming down from one side while four other sort of robots came at them from something looking like a barricade made out of a tower which had fallen over the road they were on. Behind the barricade he could see the town center they needed to get to.
"Sir." One of the four robots said as the four came up to them. "We need to get you out of here."
"What's happening?" He asked as strong arms lifted both of them up.
"We're under attack. All civilians are being evacuated." One of the other responded in a human voice.
"Where will we go?"
"To the SGC, or Atlantia if you will. It's a city…"
"Private, my shield's running out." Another of the four shouted as it stepped in behind the booth, which was taking a pounding.
"You two." The Private said and pointed to the one who'd said something and another. "Take the lead back to the barricade. We'll be two steps behind you."
"Yes Sir." The two said and begun to hurry down the street. Looking down each side road as they passed by, at a few they sent down bright lights, but most they ran past with him and his daughter holding onto one each.
When they came up to the barricade the two robots took a much firmer grip of them and then they flew over the barricade into a large group of humans and robots.
"Recruit. We have a breach on the north west side of the barricade." Someone shouted and the two robots darted of, leaving them all alone in a mess of humans who were all pushing towards the town center.
Again a cloud of dust swept over them, a split second later from behind and to their right they felt a massive heat pressing against them. When the dust settled he saw everything in a grey scale, except for a spot on his girls head where he could see blood rushing down and cleaning away the grey, leaving room for the red blood. Again from the left he felt the heat pressing against them and then someone crashed into his side and pressed them to the ground.
When he managed to heave the body of them people were lying around in piles and the barricade had large holes in it through which the bright lights flew, where the lights hit craters formed in the stone front of the town center, or when they hit people they burned right through their flesh and they fell to the ground, dead as stones. On the barricade the friendly robots tried to hold their ground while the lights flew by them.
Five minutes later as the crowd was growing ever smaller, what must have been twenty or more bangs sounded in serie, then they happened right on the barricade and debris shot past them, more than a few people fell as the spray of debris mowed them down. When he glanced over his shoulder he no longer saw the barricade, only a handful of robots which hurried there to hold of the hoard of attackers who now had free access to the civilians.
Around them he saw people falling left and right with smoking holes, with his body protesting his every action he got up and lifted her unconscious body and pushed for the front of the mass. He didn't care that he knocked over an elder man or that he kicked a child in the back to get past, all around him people were getting slaughtered by the green blasts. Something stung in his left shoulder and he staggered and fell forward onto the hard cobblestone. A foot on his back pressed him down and he felt her chest pressed against his own, with the pressure on his back gone again he got up on his knees.
Everything from his left shoulder and out was numb and the entire arm just hung there and he had no control over it. With his right arm he managed to haul her onto his shoulder and he hurried on after the mass of people which was shrinking down to a few dozen. Two meters from the transporter he fell, his legs felt like they'd been put inside two huge hives bees, then he no longer felt anything below his waist. There they lay, just shy of the transporter and he couldn't move. She was just barely breathing and now he lay on her.
From above he felt something grabbing him and pulling him into a sitting position against the transporter, another sting burned in his chest and he could already see his blood flowing in the cracks between the stones below. Standing above him was one of the robots, it was firing with one hand turned backwards while it's head and the other hand was turned to him.
"H...h...he...her." He managed to cough.
"I am sorry Sir. My servos have been damaged,I can not carry you both." It responded.
"Ta...take…h...her." He half shouted, half gurgled as he ripped the reserve gun from the robots leg. He wasn't good at shooting, but with a wall of enemies he had a hard time missing them.
"As you wish Sir." It said and lifted her up with one arm. Then it walked up to the transporter and the two disappeared in a white light, leaving him behind. With him as the only living thing left the approaching horde all turned on him and he could feel the stings all over his body. Behind him he saw a white flash just as his eyes closed, he felt a hand grabbing his shoulder and he was pulled backwards as his arm felt limp at his side and he faded away.
