Liek I said before, I have an amazing Beta who read this and then read it again and proabaly read it a third time, just to make sure it made sense. I cannot tell you how much I appreciated it! I wanted to give huge thanks to everyone who reviewed, altered and favorited. Major props to all!
Disclaimer: Still got nothing except my OC and plot.
Three years later
"Wake up, Brackett! Med call in five."
Marley's eyes opened involuntarily as she heard the orderly slam the door, and she rolled over to face the wall again. Damn, she was tired. She couldn't sleep in this place; she couldn't turn myself off. It felt like every moment of every day she could feel everyone; the scared girl down the hall, the pissed off guy in the room next to her. Everyone.
SHIELD promised she'd be free to go after helping them with the Damien Lancaster situation, but the moment Lancaster was caught she was taken into custody. She didn't even have time to defend herself; she woke up there at what she was told was the Wood Hill Research Facility. She was to help them in discovering more about the supposed 'Mutant Gene.' In reality it was a simply a cruel way of experimenting in order to control them; they were different, and different meant scary. Every time she thought about it, she could feel the bitter taste of betrayal rise in the back of her throat. It was a pill she'd yet to swallow.
Marley laid there for her remaining five minutes, enjoying one of the few moments she had to just feel her own emotions and sanity. Her lucid moments were far too infrequent now; with each passing day her control slipped even further away from her grasp. Some days were better than others though.
Today turned out to be one of those worse days.
She heard the door open again, this time jumping to a standing position beside the metal cot. They always wanted her standing so they could assess her more efficiently. If she wasn't standing, the doctors just assumed something was wrong or she was being defiant. Normally they assumed the second one, which was always followed with what they called 'Reinforcement.' Punishment was more like it. She'd learned from her earlier days there that defiance and rebellion didn't get her anything, not even satisfaction. She might have been giving in to their wishes, but she sure as hell wasn't giving up.
She looked to the door to find her least favorite doctor, Dr. Finnister, standing there with two guards. She internally cringed at the sight of the graying, tall doctor. No one there liked him; even the staff thought he was a real dick. Marley and the other inmates often called him Dr. Finkster for the constant pain the ass he was. She found it odd that he had two guards with him. It wasn't an unusual scene to have just one doctor, but two guards? Something was up.
Dr. Finnister stared at her for an uncomfortably long time, before he spoke.
"Good morning, Ms. Bracket." He waited for her to reply, but she simply continued to stare forward. It was never a good morning; they used the word 'good' like 'the,' it was a common-place word that held no real meaning. When he saw she wasn't going to give him the satisfaction of a greeting, he continued. "You, Ms. Brackett, have become the topic of much talk recently. It would seem you are more important than we previously thought."
Marley snorted at his comment."Shocking, 'cause I've always known I was." She almost held in her smartass answer, but he left too wide a hole to ignore. She was sure her comment would cost her, but it wouldn't be the first time her tongue got her in trouble.
He eyed her up and down, making her a little self-conscious. The grey scrubs they gave the inmates, combined with her extremely unkempt now-dulled copper hair, had to make her look like she was crazy.
"Well yes, but none the less, we would like to see you in the Observation Unit today."
Her stomach dropped; she'd been in Observation only once; the day she was brought in. It wasn't the best day out of the time she'd spent there or at least what she could remember of it. She'd been in Solitary before and almost preferred it over Observation; at least in Solitary she was left alone. From what she'd heard from the others, Observation wasn't a place you'd ever want to go twice.
Marley felt her panic begin to build as she realized why there were two guards. They'd anticipated her resistance. "I…don't think...I mean…I lied. I'm really not that special." Her mind began to kick into overdrive and her control begin to slip. Dr. Finnister's were the first emotions she could reach and it froze her the core; joy. He was happy. Her eyes widened at her new-found revelation.
"Mr. Daniels," He now spoke to the taller of the guards, "Please escort Ms. Brackett to the bathroom for showers, then bring her to the west unit." Without another look he left the room, leaving Marley and two guards to stare at one another.
Daniels was the first to speak, "You heard him, Marley, let's go."
Over the years, she'd become familiar with many of the guards, at least close enough for a first name basis. Most of them were still just trained soldiers following orders, but some were friendly enough. They often slipped the inmates things from the outside, like newspapers or candy. If someone started bringing in cigarettes, it would feel like an actual prison.
"Explain something to me Daniels." Marley started. "What is it your life's goal to be someone's bitch? Because you're pretty top-notch at it." Daniels only sighed in response before grabbing her arm and pushing her out the door. The instant he touched her skin, she felt his slight arousal towards her. Leave it her to attract the enemy, she thought, taking a deep breath to hide her growing fear.
They began their journey down the hall towards the community bathroom. Both guards flanked her sides as if, at any moment, she would bolt; she was more than temped to. She noticed the silence that surrounded her and quickly looked around; no one else was out, every cell door was still shut. She was the only person in hall; that meant someone important was coming or they didn't wanting them to talk to each other. Either was possible.
As soon as they got to the bathroom, her attendants left, leaving her in the hands of the usual and only female guard she'd ever seen. She decided to take her shower as slow as possible, stalling as long as possible.
She only got out when the female guard threatened to come in after her. When she got out and dried herself, she noticed none of the other inmates had joined her. That was really not a good sign—they were keeping them separated. She ran her fingers through her wet locks, as they were not allowed to have hair brushes or anything else that may improve they're appearances—especially after the stabbing incident. Sadly, it was the best she could do. They didn't have any mirrors, so she could only assume she didn't look too bad. She knew she'd gotten thinner, paler, and her hair was longer, but beyond that she really didn't know what she looked like now.
Stepping out into the hall, Marley was greeted by two more guards, making it four extremely built men to walk her to the 'west unit.' She swallowed a large lump that was beginning to form in her throat. She could feel the fear of the men around her, but didn't understand why they were afraid; they knew what was coming, but it had nothing to do with them.
They continued to walk in an uncomfortable silence when they reached a door that required a key code, and they quickly blocked her view as the door was opened.
With an eye roll and a snort, Marley said, "Guys you realize that even if I noticed and remembered the passkey, there are about hundred more passkeys I'd have to learn? Plus get past a million guards, and not to mention, scale a 10 foot high barb-wire fence. I'm not that desperate."
Unfortunately she was that desperate; she was desperate enough to do all that twice. She was pushed forward, completely ignored, as they continued their walk when she was suddenly forced to stop. They were at the end of a small corridor of windows.
Dr. Finnister appeared from around the corner with a few other doctors she'd never met. There were two men with them that weren't wearing lab coats. One looked oddly familiar; with his cleanly shaped brown hair and black suit and tie. The other was a taller, younger man 'who did not look the least bit amused as he held his hands behind his back. The slightly familiar man gave her a small smile and she felt her eyebrows knit together in confusion, but shook the feeling off and focused on her surroundings.
The guards began pushing her towards one of windows that turned out to be door.
"Well, crap." She deadpanned. She felt her breathing speed up as the emotions of the other's entered her brain. They were all curious, with a hint of joy. They felt like kids would at Christmas, except for the man she thought looked familiar. Marley couldn't separate the feelings she could sense, but his wasn't the same as the others. It almost felt like pity, but that was an impossible emotion there. She tried to keep their emotions out, but the sudden stress disabled her.
"Ms. Brackett, if you would." Dr. Finnister motioned to the double door as she watched them slide open.
Her whole body froze. "Shit," She whispered.
Inside the room sat one lonely grey metal chair; the walls were made entirely of clear glass except for the back concrete wall. It was definitely an observation room. Her senses immediately went into overdrive and she began backing away, but she was stopped when a guard grabbed her shoulders.
Marley was shoved into the room, the doors quickly sliding shut behind her. She simply stood there facing the wall, unsure of what to do. The only other time she'd been in this situation she was mad as hell and in handcuffs. This time was a bit different.
"Ms. Brackett, if you would be so kind to have a seat." Dr. Finnister's voice resounded through the small room. The man's voice was even more annoying on a loud-speaker. She looked to the chair in the middle of the room and slowly made her way over. She took a small moment to stare at the chair before picking it up and turning it the opposite direction. She sat down and faced the wall, smirking at her genius idea.
"Ms. Brackett..." His annoyance was clear.
She once again stood and turned the chair back to its original position, the only sound heard was the small scraping and clink of the chair. She took a deep breath and sat down, not looking up to meet each set of eyes that were now staring a hole her face. She continued to stare at the floor until a quiet knocking on the glass brought her head up.
It was the vaguely familiar man from before; he mouthed something to her, but his words were lost. She knew she must have looked extremely confused because he turned to Dr. Finnister, but Finnester shook his head. The man said something to him again, but that got an even bigger head shake. Clearly the man wanted to speak with her. For the first time in a while, she was actually amused.
The man stared at her for another second before tapping the glass and taking a step back. He looked as if he was analyzing the glass, which was extremely ironic as Marley was the one under observation. He looked back at her and mouthed to her again as the taller one remained silent and still.
"What?" She asked, this time out loud.
He mouthed it yet again, this time slowing his words. She simply stared; clearly he did not understand that she was clueless. He looked back at the others. Marley's eyes going to them as well; they looked just as dumbfounded as she was. With an eye roll, the younger man reached into his suit jacket, pulling out what looked like a small thick disk and pushed it against the glass. He looked up at her and made the motion with his hands like he was shooing her away, before quickly turning around to face the doctors, starting to make, what looked like, small talk. He slowly led them away.
The small disk began to light up with the lights getting faster with each passing second. She stood and began getting closer to the glass out of pure curiosity. That's when she realized what it was, but her realization hit too late.
"Ah sh—"
The room suddenly exploded, sending her flying against the opposite wall. The glass from the cell splintered out, catching several parts of her body in their wake. She felt her head hit the wall with a sickening crack, she landed on the floor in a heap, glass scattered underneath her. For a moment the room stood still, but time quickly caught up to her when the yelling began. Her ears refused to work properly over the loud ringing. Her eyes opened involuntarily to find the familiar man in the black suit and tie kneeling next to her.
"You okay?" The ringing finally settled down enough to make sense of the question posed to her.
"I..." She couldn't formulate words. She closed her mouth and stared up at him, awestruck.
He held out his hand after he realized she was useless. "Come on, we only have two minutes or less before the cavalry arrives."
Her eyes continued to stare, head pounding with every passing second. Without waiting for her to take his hand, he reached out and grabbed her shoulders, forcing her to her feet. Glass pulled at her skin as she stood. Marley grimaced at the pain, but even more at the small amount of blood she saw on her clothes. Blood was never good.
The familiar man noticed her discovery. "We can fix that later, we have to go now." The hands that were once holding her shoulders were now grabbing her hand and pulling her toward the now wide open cell. It suddenly dawned on her; she was being led to her freedom. She shook herself and followed, trying to keep up with the inhuman speed.
"Stop!"
Marley spun around to see a storm of guards and Dr. Finnister coming towards them. She was gently pushed behind the man.
He looked down and said, "Stay here, this should only take a minute." Without a response he ran forward and began a hand-to-hand fight with the approaching guards.
She stepped back from what was happening in front of her, but was grabbed by two guards from behind; she hadn't even sensed them. Thankfully, her survival instincts and rush of adrenaline suddenly took control. It was the one thing she was grateful to SHIELD for teaching her.
Marley grabbed the guard's hand that held her shoulder, twisting it until she heard it pop. She turned around and rammed her knee into his groin; he let out a moan and dropped. She turned and high kicked the guard standing next to him, she didn't even look to see if it had taken him down as she continued on to the next person. She heard Dr. Finnister yell something, but was too amped to process his words. Daniels appeared and tried to go for her arms, but she got a good head butt in when he dove to pin her.
She stumbled back against the force, causing her to lose her focus for a second. Unfortunately, a second was all it took; she was grabbed from behind and forced against the wall, reinforcements had arrived. She could feel multiple hands pinning her and dragging her down to the ground and she let out a small cry in response.
She could feel tears beginning to form in her eyes. "No," She whispered as she struggled against the cold cement. Her plea was ignored. "Let go," She repeated, but knew it was too late. She felt her chance at freedom begin to slip away and she could do nothing to stop it. She closed her eyes to stop the nausea that started to run through her.
"Coulson, down!" Was all she heard before the weight was suddenly lifted off her as the guards around her hit the ground. "All clear! I got her!" Marley's eyes were still squeezed tight as she felt myself be lifted off the floor. The contents of her stomach also decided to lift as she couldn't stop herself from throwing up. "Unbelievable! Next time you get the girl."
She didn't know what was meant but she was too far gone to care; the warm body she was pressed to was oddly comforting.
"May's on standby; let's go Ward!"
There were shouts in the distance, but the rushing of blood in her ears was getting too intense to hear anything clearly.
The last thing she felt was something she hadn't felt since being locked up—hope. And she was all too glad to fall into it.
