Chapter 26

New Beginnings

Harry awoke and felt none of the happiness that he used to feel at the excitement of a new day. A frown was in place and he got out of bed, bringing Godric with him. He walked down the still unfamiliar hall to the small eat in kitchen and looked at his father.

"Morning daddy." He said softly.

Sirius turned quickly to him, pasting a smile over his grim face. "Morning Squirt. You're up earlier than usual." He said, a false confidence and happiness in his voice.

Harry nodded and rubbed his eyes. "I had bad dreams, lots of them." He said quietly as he sat down at the small wooden table.

Sirius frowned sympathetically. "Why didn't you come sleep with me?" he asked him walking over with a glass of orange juice, sitting it infront of him.

"Because I wanted mummy…please can we get her." Harry asked for probably the millionth time in that month.

Sirius sat his hand on his head. "No son, we can't go get mummy." He said apologetically.

Tears filled Harry's startling green eyes and he blinked rapidly, trying to clear them. "But I NEED her! I NEED her to take the dreams away. I NEED HER. She can't go away like Auntie Jess and Sammie, I NEED HER." He begain to cry.

Sirius knelt next to him, a gentle hand on the 6 year old's back. "Harry, she's not going away like them. She's safe, and at home. But to keep her safe we had to go away, remember? To keep the bad men from her, and away from you. We had to go away so she was safe." he said patiently.

"NO! NO! I'LL KEEP HER SAFE! I LOVE HER, I'LL KEEP MUMMY SAFE. PLEASE DON'T TAKE HER AWAY! I'LL FIGHT THE BAD MEN, I'LL KEEP HER SAFE. I PROMISE DADDY! PLEASE!" he plead, losing control completely. Sirius was glad in that moment that his magic was bound.

"Harry…please calm down son." He said gently.

"Please daddy. Please!" Harrpy begged wrapping his arms around his neck, tears falling down his cheeks. "Plase bring her back. I'll be good daddy. I'll be good. Please bring my mummy home. Please daddy, please, bring her home to me." Harry sobbed into Sirius' shoulder.

His pleas and tears had nearly made Sirius go back for Mel on more than one occasion. He had almost changed his plans numerable times, and several times simply because everything in him ached to see her. It felt like he was dying the pain of missing her was so great. But she was safe, and that was paramount.

"Harry…." he said slowly he was about to say more when a knock sounded on the door.

Harry jumped away from Sirius and ran for the door at full speed, before Sirius could even get up. "MUMMY MUMMY MUMMY MUMMY!" he screamed, pulling the door open to Sirius' horror.

"Harry NO!" he yelled.

They hadn't had any visitors since leaving, they had moved to a small cabin out in a heavily forested area in Brazil. If someone had found them, it could only be someone magical, and how they found them, Sirius was at a loss. He quickly got up and rushed to the door, intending to slam it closed but Harry's cry of delight came too soon.

"UNCLE REMMY!" he screamed, flying out of the door and into the haggard looking werewolf's arms, hugging him around the middle.

Sirius stopped at the door way looking at his best friend, his mouth slightly agape. "Rem?" he said quietly, not believing his eyes.

Remus nodded. "Dumbledore sent me…" he said. "Fawks apparated me here." He told him.

Sirius nodded. "Is…is anyone else?" Sirius stammered.

"Is mummy with you? Where is she? Is she coming to?" Harry plastered him with questions, it was the most he had talked in weeks.

Remus looked at the two. "It's just me." He said in a low voice, looking at Sirius. "Dumbledore said I couldn't contact anyone else about you." He said.

Sirius nodded, partially relieved, partially disappointed. "Come in. Don't stay out there. I set the wards up hoping you would come, you can enter and leave at will." He said, stepping aside to let his friend enter.

Remus picked Harry up and hugged him tightly, he could feel the little boys hot tears on his neck and seeping through his shirt. He walked into the house holding him.

"I missed you! I missed you so much. You have to stay, please don't go away from us. We need you." Harry cried.

Remus hugged him tightly and looked at Sirius with a raised eyebrow as Sirius closed and locked the door. "We've lost a lot in the last two months." He said quietly, in explanation.

Remus smiled sadly and kissed Harry's head. "I'm not going anywhere little cub." He whispered into Harry's ear.

Hours after sundown found Remus sitting on the couch in front of the fire with Harry curled up asleep with his head in Remus' lap. Remus took another drink of the amber colored whiskey that Sirius had poured. "So I went straight to Dumbledore when I came back, and Mel was gone and you were gone. He told me that Mel had opted to move with her father, and they were being heavily guarded. She's under nearly as many protections as Harry was at the Dursley's. That's all he would tell me. When I asked about you, he said you told him he could send me to you if I wanted. And I know you and Harry need me just as much as I need you." He admitted.

Sirius stared into the fire, nodding as he listened. "He does need you. He's not the same, he's lost so much. He's not the same Harry." He said sadly.

Remus frowned and stroked the raven dark hair of the little boy and looked back up at Sirius. "I don't think any of us are the same." He said quietly.

Sirius nodded in agreement. "Did Dumbledore say…anything else?" he asked solemly before taking a drink of his own whiskey.

Remus nodded. "You and I will be taking turns going on expeditions with him and being with Harry. We're going to start finding and destroying horcruxes." He said, a hard look in his eye.

Sirius felt a lead weight drop into his stomach. "When we destroy them all….how do we destroy the one in Harry, without destroying Harry himself?" he asked, his voice gravely as he thought about it.

Remus looked at him. "I don't know….but I give you my word, just as we both swore to James to always keep Harry safe. This little boy, will NOT be harmed." He said certainly.

Sirius nodded. "I'll surrender to death itself before I let that happen." He said seriously, looking at his sleeping godson.

Remus nodded in agreement, looking down at the little boy. "You and I both Siri…You and I both."

(Melanie POV)

Mel lay on the table watching the rapid thumping sound filling the room just as tears filled her eyes. She squeezed her father's hand as the tears spilled down her cheeks.

"Look right here for me, and you'll be able to see." The russian healer said.

Melanie followed his instruction and looked up, in the air came an image of what was unmistakeably a baby. She watched as it wiggled around, her heart feeling like it had stopped just as the baby's flew on like horses hoofs. Strong, vibrant, and vital….The sound of life itself filtering through the room, through her head, through her heart and soul.

"It's too soon to tell you the sex, but the baby is healthy, you're 13 weeks along. And everything looks great." He said with his thick accent. "I'll give you a moment." He said, noticing her distress and leaving her and her father with the sound of the baby's heart beat and the image to look at.

Melanie rolled to the side and buried her face in her father's chest. "I never told him….I knew….I knew and so much was going on…he was already so stressed…..I never told him." She cried, gripping her father's shirt.

He held his daughter tightly, not knowing what to say, this situation was broken and damaged on so many levels. "He's gone Melly…but he's left a very important part of himself with you. You still have a piece of him. You'll always have part of him." He said softly.

Mel cried desperately into her father's shoulder. She missed everything about Sirius. She missed his blue eyes, she missed his smile that reminded her of the sunrise. She missed his barklike laugh, she missed his touch, and now…he was going to miss being a father to their child. She swore she could see his face everytime she closed her eyes. She could still feel him. She sat up, wrapping her arms around herself, placing one hand on her still flat stomach.

"I'll never, never let you go. I'll always be here, I will never let go." She said, though to the baby, or to Sirius, knowing he wouldn't hear her anyways, she wasn't sure. The only thing she was sure of, was that she was going to be a mother... And though he didn't know it. Sirius Black was going to be a father.
