First and most importantly, I'm so sorry about my super late update. I know I have finally break my updating streak but this chapter was so hard to squeeze out from my brain and I don't like it at all when I finished writing the first draft months ago. I didn't put HIATUS on this 'cause I didn't think it'd take me this long. But it did T^T

I confess that this chapter is, so far, the hardest to write. I have rewritten this one far too many times that I have lost count of it. The reason is, this chapter will be one of the turning points of the story. If I'm not careful about plotting its direction, I will be digging my own grave in later chapters.

Secondly, I may have to apologize in advance about the longer update interval from now on (once a week at best, once a month at worst) but I'll make up for it with the lengthy update, as I've done with this chapter. Hope this news won't be too discouraging.

Any other excused I may have is unacceptable. I deserve whatever you readers will throw at me :'( But I still hope you enjoy this chapter. Reviews are answered at the bottom. Any suggestion/reviews always welcomed.

Oh! Some of my readers ~Rieyama Yuuko~ draw a fanart to this story. the link is here

Disclaimer: I don't own Hikaru no Go.

Yashiro was twisting his thumps while he was waiting for Hikaru to finish changing into his school uniform outside of the soccer clubroom. When Hikaru told him a few weeks ago that he decided to join the team rather than applying for the school's Go club, Yashiro did not think the boy was serious. He could not understand why someone with an outstanding skill in a board game like him would want to waste his time away by becoming a varsity player. The way Hikaru played Go was utterly fascinating to say the least. Take him for example; Yashiro had never thought of the day he would see himself being drawn into any type of the board games. Yet here he was, pleading Hikaru to teach him Go. The boy laughed at the idea when Yashiro first mentioned this after the incident with Ayabe and his gang ended, with a surprising turn of a result. However, after seeing the serious face Yashiro had showed him, Hikaru's laughter immediately died down.

"Alright, but I have conditions" Hikaru's face became stoic as he turned to face Yashiro. "First, no mention of me teaching you to play Go. And I mean not a soul will hear about this, or I'll call it off." Yashiro nodded eagerly. He had wanted to ask for the reason behind the boy's strange attempt to remain anonymous but decided against it. It was not the best time for him to be poking his nose around the boy's business when Hikaru was about to agree to helping him with his favour.

"Second…" Hikaru trailed off as he glanced up at Yashiro before snapping his face the other way. His lips barely moved as he mumbled something to himself quietly.

"Fujiwara?" Yashiro frowned when he found himself straining to hear what his new classmate had to say. He thought he spotted Hikaru's ears turned red.

"I said help me with my study, damn it! How many times do you want me to repeat myself?" Hikaru blurted out heatedly. His cheeks were painted a light tint of pink as he mock glared at Yashiro. The other boy barely hid his laugh at the sight of the very flustered Hikaru. He never imagined that the young master of Fujiwara would have troubles studying. To him, Hikaru seemed capable enough to get average grades without trying hard anyway.

"Don't laugh! I do not want to hear my grandparents complain about my grades. I'll be doomed if they start hiring a private tutor and take all the fun time away from me." Hikaru barked.

So here he was, glancing after Hikaru's teammates as they left the changing room. They seemed to be a friendly bunch as Yashiro noted that several of them even waved at him (someone they knew to be a friend of their teammate) when they spotted him on their way out. Yashiro waved back but his hand faltered as Hikaru walked out behind the door. His eyes widened at the sight of the blood covered gauze on the ear of the Go prodigy.

"What the hell happened?" Yashiro almost shouted.

"Oh, this?" Hikaru jerked his head, showing more gory detail of his injury. Yashiro winced in respond. "I forgot to take off my earring during the practice match today." He shrugged as if the accident was not something to fret about while his hand pulled a small Ziploc bag out and dangled it in front of the other boy. Yashiro saw a red stud earring, covered with a trace of blood rolling inside the bag and he paled. Hikaru smirked at his reaction and snorted.

"You're such a wuss, Kiyoharu. No wonder my grandparents trust you to be my henchman." Hikaru teased sarcastically.

"They trust me with your study, you runt of a young master. And do we go straight back to your house or we grab something first as usual?" Yashiro eyed Hikaru's injury with a worried look on his face. He secretly praying for the boy to go back home so his grandparents would call their family doctor to look at the wound. If he said he wanted Hikaru's ear checked, the boy would likely do something to stall the action. Hikaru was the rebellious little prat, always deliberately behaving in the way he was told not to, purposely stirring problems for those close to him (safe for few nice people and Yashiro himself). Yashiro thought that Hikaru might be trying to get back at people, especially his grandparents, for pushing and pulling him around for their own benefits. He did not really understand Hikaru's situation and thought that he was a spoiled, pompous little prat at first but he came to term with it after noticing the unpleasant looks that Hikaru's grandparents did not bother to hide whenever the subject involved around Hikaru's hobby was brought up. Yashiro did not know what happened between them and he was not meddling enough to pry. He only knew that if he was in Hikaru's position, he might not be able stand all the strictly laid out paths of life that had been planned for him. He frowned and grew quieter as he thought about the situation his friend had to face everyday when he was at home. He used to envy his friend's fortune and luxurious life but as he grew closer to the cheerful boy and witnessed Hikaru's not so fortunate circumstance, his jealousy was gradually lessened. Yashiro knew he was not much of help to his new friend so when Hikaru started complaining about his unfair life to him, all he did was obediently lending him an ear.

However, Yashiro noticed that Hikaru's ranting had failed to help balancing his mental health lately. Even after receiving a good dose of endorphins induced exercises, which would normally boost his mood right up, Hikaru still seemed unsettled with himself.

"Something bugging you, Fujiwara? You have been snappy lately. Well, more than usual," Yashiro asked when Hikaru did not reply his first question. He merely stared blankly at the ruby earring on his palm.

"Sorry, I just feel something is off about my brother." Hikaru sighed. "He kind of avoids talking about Go whenever we talk on the phone. It's a drastic change consider it is 'my brother' who never stops asking me to play game after games with him, even if it means we have to do it through the phone."

"On the phone?" Yashiro lifted an eyebrow. The idea of playing the complicate board game with the help of landline technology seemed too farfetched for him to understand. He could pretend to understand how it worked so that he would not interrupt his friend. Unfortunately, he was never the type of person who could hide his own expression nor capable to conceal his true feelings under a cheerful façade like Hikaru always did.

Hikaru shook his head tiredly in reply. "Last time before he started acting weird, we still played Go together just fine. Did I perhaps say something bad to put him off, maybe?" Hikaru looked up for Yashiro's random advice, the kind that would help his inner self deny his own negative thinking. He blinked at the dumbstruck Yashiro and barely suppressed a laugh as he saw his friend's blank face stared back at him. "We played games by calling out coordinate numbers so we can place stones at the places we want." he answered the unsaid question, slightly amused.

"Oh, then what's the deal?" Yashiro was back to furrowing his brows as Hikaru went back to his depressing mode.

"I wouldn't be sulking if I know. I tried calling him because he even stopped calling me altogether. But my mom's been the one picking up the phone lately and she either says he was out with other pros or he was busy doing something else." he sighed again, this time dejectedly.

Yashiro went back to thinking quietly to himself. The fact that he did not know the Go pro personally was not helping in terms of finding assurance that everything between the brothers were going fine. From what he knew of the famous pro from Hikaru, the older brother cared a lot for his friend that Yashiro did not see this situation happening at all. If Fujiwara Sai was truly the doting brother like Hikaru had told him, he doubted Sai would stain their relationship further by not trying to fix it. So instead of leading the boy into a deeper depressing mood, the corners of his lips slowly spread until it turned to a mischievous grin.

"You called 'this' sulking?" Yashiro looked at him up and down in a mock scrutinizing gaze then shook his head. "Tsk, tsk, to think a spoiled little Kyoto lady would do a better job than you at this. I think you need to be re-educated, Fujiwara."

Hikaru seemed to be genuinely surprised by Yashiro's response that his feet paused for a short moment, his jaw hung open in an unsophisticated manner before a smile was quickly spreading on his lips.

"Argh~ you little…and I wasted my time pouring out my worries to you." Hikaru reached his arm out and locked Yashiro's neck playfully while the other boy pretended to be choked and gasping for some air. He spotted their favourite ramen shop and dragged Yashiro down the evening street with him. "You'll pay for your ignorance with a hot bowl of heavenly ramen or die in my super mighty arm lock." Hikaru finally laughed.

~o0O0o~

"I'm home." Hikaru slide off his shoes while one of the maids came to help carry his school bag, which he handed to her tiredly. He did not miss the tension in the air around her as she followed him down the polished corridor but he feinted ignorance as they were getting closer to the tea room where his grandfather usually spent his private time alone after the family's dinner.

"Were you always home this late when you were living in Tokyo?" A calm voice caught Hikaru off guard when he was about to pass the room. His eyes widened in surprise before he turned to face the old man behind the half-open door.

"Good evening, grandfather," he greeted stiffly. The wrinkled figure did not respond the gesture but kept on sipping his tea as if he did not see his younger grandson standing quietly behind the shoji doors.

"And I thought you promised that this activity of yours wouldn't affect your training lessons. It looks like we were too hasty when we decided that you could manage your time by yourself after all."

"There was some accident during the practice today so I went to check up at a hospital afterward. I am sorry I didn't let you know. I won't be late again."

"And what if this happen again?"

Hikaru's breath was stuck in his throat at the grim thoughts of what might have happen to him if he could not keep up his punctuality. He felt his clenched palms moistened with sweat as he bit the inside of his lips nervously.

"Then I will quit soccer as you wish me to," Hikaru stared at the floor, waiting to be dismissed from the spot where he was standing so he could finally rest peacefully in his own room. When there was no response from the former Fujiwara head, Hikaru assumed their conversation had ended. He was only steps away from the stairs that let to the second floor of the mansion when the oldest Fujiwara spoke again.

"The telephone is for household using. I hope you'd not mistake it to be your private property by hogging it to yourself for hours on end." The low voice remained calm and collected as the old man addressed his grandson who was now nowhere to be seen within his line of sight.

"I'll do well to remember that, grandfather. Then, if you'll excuse me." And Hikaru disappeared into the above storey.

"…wara-san? Fujiwara-san?"

"What!? Oh, sorry Touya-kun. Where were we?" Sai blinked himself out of his stupor. He hastily rebuilt his focus on the board, trying to locate the last move that they discussed up until he unintentionally drifted into his own troubled mind.

"I was asking if you're going to Kyoto event this coming weekend. Both father and Ogata-san will be attending." Akira hoped he didn't let out any sigh as he tried his best not to show any sign of displeasure. The genius pro had been acting out of his character as of late. With all his spacing out and frequent sighing, everyone in the salon thought that Fujiwara Sai's spring had finally arrived. Akira couldn't say he knew much about romance but to him, the pro seemed to be suffering rather than enjoying the moment, if his frowning was anything to go by.

"I will, along with most of the lower dan pros." Sai answered. His face started to gain back some color now that his mind was occupied by some other distraction. "I have to spend a night there according to my schedule but I'm free the day after that. Do you want to set up a lesson?"

"No, it's not that." Akira quickly waved away the idea. "I was wondering if you're going to visit your brother. It's been a while since I last saw him so I was hoping I could tag along." He blushed slightly as he revealed his true intention. 'I hope that doesn't come out too wayward.'

What little color did Sai gained back drained out twice as fast. Although he managed to collect himself, Akira didn't miss the strange glint in his eyes which he failed to hide during that split second.

"My brother might be busy with his extra lessons. I'm not sure if we'll get a chance to meet at all."

Akira frowned at Sai's stiff tone. It wasn't really a secret to anyone that the pro was a doting brother since whenever the topic about the younger Fujiwara was brought up, the pro would drop every proper manner and started boasting about him. So why did he tense up when Akira thought the conversation should relax the pro?

"But he'll be in town. It would be a pity to let the chance to meet him goes to waste." Akira knew that he was being a busy body but he didn't have any other mean to contact the boy whose game had left a strong impression on him. Heck, he'd give up all the insei games, and did it willingly, for a chance to play another game with him.

"I'm really sorry, Touya-kun. Even if I did meet him, I'm afraid I'd just get in his way. My brother has already begun his formal training, he might not even have time to play Go anymore."

"You mean…he has given up?"

Sai averted his gaze from the young Touya after witnessing despair on the boy's face. The look in his eyes reminded him of his own brother whom he had forsaken to live the life that was supposedly belong to him from the first place. It was too much for him to see the same look twice.

"I'm really sorry, Touya-kun" He closed the lids on the Go bowls and readied himself to leave. "But you should look ahead. You'll find more opponents like him as you grow." With that, Sai solemnly walked to the counter and retrieved his bag from Ichikawa who looked between the two of them with concern.

"Did you two have a fight? I never thought he could look so down." She rushed to Akira when the door was securely shut behind the departed pro. All eyes in the salon turned to the young Touya, waiting for him to answer.

"Me neither." Akira murmured, not sure if he'd ever find an opponent that could impress him as much as the boy Fujiwara did.

~o0O0o~

Sai absentmindedly stared at his own reflection on the glass window, ignoring the two squealing girls who were riding the same train as him. He thought back to the last conversation he had with Hikaru on the phone.

"Seriously, nii-chan, I thought you said you'd play Shido-go with me. So how come I got trashed again?" Hikaru whined. Sai could even picture him pouting at the other end of the line.

"Sorry, Hikaru. But I can't play it easy with you. You know my Go all too well to let me go easy on you." He chuckled playfully.

"What is that? Lame excuse?"

Sai laughed at Hikaru's mock scold. "No, seriously. By the way, you did make a surprising move there, on the upper right corner near the middle before you resign. I admit you almost had me cornered. Where did you learn to play like that?"

"Oh, that? I read from one of the books that I found in some Go store. I didn't think it'd work on you at first because the situation there was quite different from the book. But I decided to add some twist to the shape and it works just fine. Man, I'm glad I tried that."

Sai tightened his grip on the phone as he tried to calm the pressure that had been building up in his chest. "…So you're saying you've made that move yourself?"

"Not entirely," Hikaru chuckled as if he thought that Sai had just asked some silly question. "I just add my own thinking to the theory. If I use any move straight out from the books against you, I won't have a chance of wining in this life time."

Sai didn't reply to Hikaru's playful note, not even a smile had reach his lips "I'm surprised you have time to play Go over there. I hope our grandparents are being nice with your training?"

"Not in the least." The younger brother snorted, a hint of resentment was evident in his tone. "But I managed a game or two with a friend every night, so everything is good."

"A friend? And at nighttimes at that? Hikaru, you're not sneaking out at bed times, are you?" Sai was about to give his brother some lecture if his notorious troublemaker had really went so far as running around the neighborhood during the nights. But Hikaru quickly perked up at the sight of someone lurking around the corner not too far away from where he was using the phone.

"Ah! Gosh, here comes grandfather's spy. I'm sorry nii-chan but I gotta hang up now. Talk to you later!"

"Wait! Hikaru! Who is this friend of yours?"

But the teen pro never got the answer to his question as his brother had already hung up on him. Instead, his mind was plague with a foreign feeling. The same feeling that he had experienced but also had been denying it ever since the time he found out that Hikaru figured out the move which he had overlooked in the game between Touya sensei and Ichiryu sensei. Sai could not forgive himself for harboring such negative sentiment within his mind. But the more he tried to hide it, the stronger it grew. He bit down on his lips, not really caring if his skin broke or not. He hated himself for being jealous of Hikaru's growth, feeling ashamed for wanting to always be ahead of his little brother, disgusted with himself for wishing to be the only figure Hikaru would always look up to and admire.

"What a terrible brother I am." Sai forcefully gripped down on his arms as he looked down to the night city of Tokyo on his train ride home.

A few days later, Kyoto.

It was a very frustrating time for Ogata to be sharing a room with his archrival after losing a game to that certain pro about a month ago in the preliminaries of Meijin title. He didn't let his losses bother him much when both of them first started off in their career paths. After all, those games were some close ones, with only less than five mokus short coupled with the fact that he was the only player among the lower dans who could face Fujiwara and capable of bringing their games to Yose.

However, their latest game was different. That game had forcefully opened his eyes to the bitter reality of their rivalry. Their little game of tag had always been an exciting relationship ever since their first encounter during the pro exam. People usually said that even though their style was different, their skills were not far apart. And that Ogata would eventually catch up with his rival in no time. However, he did not think his heart could truly believe in such naive encouragement any more, not when he felt the gap in their abilities had widened beyond his reach. Ever since Fujiwara came to his sensei's study group, the pro had improved his skills in leap. He was no longer the ray of hope that lighten the path of Go world but the monster of despair that envelope every opponent who had come to pass. The media loved him, amateurs worshipped him, even his own sensei thought very highly of him. However, that wasn't the same for most Japanese pros.

Fujiwara might be a respectable Go pro but he also eclipsed those around him in eternal darkness, forcing them to realize that they were merely stepping stones for him to rise in rank and not his challenges. Ogata refused to accept that fate. Even though he knew he wouldn't stand a chance against Fujiwara at the moment but at least he would try to keep up, even if it meant he had to spend all his waking hours doing so.

"Oi! Move your foot!" A boy bellowed behind him, startled the crowd of old men who had come to enjoy the event.

"What?" Ogata lifted his brows, confused that the lanky boy had his finger pointing at him accusingly.

"Hurry up and move it!" The boy looked furious as he approached him.

"What on earth are you..." Ogata didn't get to finish his sentence as he was rudely shoved away. The boy's hand quickly grabbed a small ziplock bag on the floor which Ogata 'might' have step on earlier. But whatever the case was, the boy's attitude had tick him off. So before the boy could storm away from the spot, Ogata swiped his hand down and snatched whatever the boy was holding.

"That's not the way a brat like you should talk to seniors. Let me hear some apology and I'll think about giving this back to you." Ogata said calmly while dangling the bag in front of the boy, a sadistic glint in his eyes. "If you cause any more trouble, I can have securities kick you out. So you better play nice and quiet." He smirked.

"Acting all high and mighty? You're not an adult yourself!" He could see that the boy was now annoyed and impatient. His voice was lowered but it was still somewhat loud enough to gather attentions from people around them. But before they both could start bashing each other, a smaller boy came to the scene.

"Kiyoharu, what's going on?" Both Ogata and Yashiro turned their gazes to the newcomer.

"Fujiwara, this guy stepped on your earring and now he's not giving it back." The taller kid glared at him. But all Ogata heard was the name which the boy called his friend. He instinctively looked down at the object in his hand as his mind began to put the pieces of puzzle together.

Fujiwara, did the brat just call the other boy Fujiwara?

Ogata would say that this boy was someone with the same last name as the rising pro had he not taken that glance at the blood red earring in the plastic bag which resembled the one on his rival's ear. For this boy had nothing alike the famous pro who Ogata had known for almost a year. Maybe their noses looked similar and they possessed the same air of superiority but that was the end of it. This boy whose cloths screamed 'jog' from head to toe looked at him boldly before turning his gaze to the bag in his hand.

"Look, I don't know what you two were arguing about but can I have my earring back?" The boy Fujiwara said with a mildly bored tone.

"Oi, why are you ditching me, Fujiwara? I was helping you search for your earring earlier." Yashiro whined

"And if it's not for you who forcefully took my jacket, I wouldn't have lost it in the first place." The two of them started bantering in the midst of Go fanatics, leaving Ogata dumbfound at the childish manner they displayed. It looked like he had no choice but to return the earring to the boy even though he wanted to teach the other kid some manner before returning it.

But wait, they are at Go event which mean at least one of them can play Go. Then maybe I can make this matter a little more interesting. Ogata smirked.

"What if we make this a bet? I'll give this earring back to you if you win against me. If you lose, I get to keep it." Ogata heard people around him erupted into quiet murmurs. Some even shook their heads, maybe protesting at the fact that a pro like him was challenging a boy to a game but he didn't really care. As long as he could put an end to his pent up anger, either one of them would do.

"You don't look the type to wear earrings." The younger Fujiwara chuckled. His voice was full of sarcasm. A cheeky brat.

"Neither do you." Ogata sneered.

"What if I don't want to bet. I can just take it and go." At this, the boy's lips stretched into a thin line, making him look even more arrogant. But Ogata wasn't surprised at his reply. He was somewhat expecting that.

"Sure I won't stop you." He shrugged. "But is it really alright for you to run away from a challenge like you are about to do? Shame, and here I expect playing you would be a good warm up before I face your brother in Kisei prelims. Never mind that, it was wrong of me to expect a good game from a less-than-ten-year old boy anyway. Here's your earring." Ogata tossed the stone jewellery to the boy who caught it without fail. However, instead of showing appreciation, the boy sent him a murderous look in return. Ogata had to bit his lips in secret to stop himself from snickering. It was not even close to a good taunting but the boy still took his bait. God bless the youth's naivety.

The younger Fujiwara narrowed his eyes at him.

"A warm up?" The boy snorted. "Well, it would be rude of me to let you go to your next game mentally unprepared. But I hope you prepare to lose here as well?"

"To you? I doubt that would 'ever' happen." Ogata grinned as he turned back to lead the boys away.

Kanrei: Yes! Hikaru is going to play more Go. But expect the slight bumps before things will begin to look up for him.

reesessweetie: :D I've missed you. and for your question, no it is not the Kansai pro who will help him play more Go but several other ppl who will meet Hikaru in future chapters (but I think you can pretty much guess who those ppl are). The youngsters (Hikaru, Akira, Yashiro) still have a very long way to go and they will face their own rocky paths along the way. I'm sure Akira will have more friends (and maybe the same amount of foes) but at least he won't be as lonely as he is in the cannon. As for Yashiro's and Hikaru's age, the website that I used for a preference probably gave me the wrong info. I seriously thought they were the same age since I only watched the animes and not reading manga. Their meeting was in a special episode for anime right? I didn't really want to watch that arc because all the taunting Yong-ha gave Hikaru. Makes me frustrated somehow tho it was a misunderstanding. But I'm glad you like it :D

Hikaru will surely help improve Yashiro's play. I'd be disheartened if you're not very surprised at how things turn out for the white hair boy (and Hikaru) in the later chapters. Pls look forward to it.

Lord Naryk: The best is yet to come. Mwahahaha

Anonymous: Sorry for even longer wait for this chapter, and the cliff hanger to boost but the next chapter will be the last time we see Hikaru at seven. He finally grows! and growing stronger as well.

Me-anne: 'A little bit OOC would be acceptable this way since a person developed based on the circumstances around him' EXACTLY MY THOUGHT but he will ease back into his canon character as time goes, due to many other circumstances so fear not. He will be even more bad ass when the time comes. Sai and Ogata will get to appear more in the future chapters. Might very well be in the next.

MetroNeko: I hope to write more as well. And FAST!

Chubby-King-Chocobo: Hehehe He will eventually lose his footing but even so, loosing makes you stronger right? Assuming he can survive his fall. As for Yashiro, I put Hikaru there to show him how addictive the game can be and he is hooked. This way, Yashiro (and Hikaru)'s development is something that even I look forward to. So stick close!

Yuu: and I thought my writing was getting more lengthy T^T Well, this one was a real cliff hanger. I deserve every bat you'd swing at me.

Guest: Sorry for a slow pace story but I can't imagine skipping any of it and come up with in dept characters later on. As for pairing, it's still undecided.

TheRedLamp: Thx! I'll try to boost my update pace too. Sorry for very long absent.

MissAX: Hikaru is still kicking ass b'cause so far his opponents, safe for Akira, aren't really strong. It's the real deal from now on and he'll really grow. Sorry for the long wait.

jadeevans05: I enjoyed writing the first chapter too. Kids are incredibly cute...when they are young. But pls look forward to read about the siblings when they grow older as well :D

Rieyama Yuuko: Hey! Sorry I didn't reply that last pm. I was hoping that I could reply here after my update but...I walked into a huge block and didn't get to reply you. Yes, my sis and I are living apart but she's coming home in a few months. I SOOO DOTE ON HER! I think I have sister complex. Thx again for the drawing! I LOVE IT! I'm sure others here would love it too! Also, Pls draw more of the siblings. Even just manly Hikaru is fine!

loveinyou: :D

Minirowan: Finally get to reply to your review. Sorry for the grammar errors and the sentences. There were times when I felt sluggish in the head while I wrote so it affected my thought on the page. Nevertheless, I'll follow your suggestion. Thx! Also, that piercing, tho it seems abrupt and I don't think I had executed it well, it has it purpose. There will be tiny hints in this story in the future where readers won't think it matters to the story but it will. The answer to the meaning of their earrings is probably in the next chapter. Again, sorry for the over due hint.

mikan-chan21: Voila!

LadyCapuccino: Sorry for the long wait :(

RustedEagleWings: It'd be quite sometime until they meet again. Hikaru and Yashiro will meet some other characters before that :D Sorry for the long wait.

aliya87: NEVER!

27aquarrow72: Thx for the combo, Fav Fol&Review. Hope you like this chapter as well.
