Sofia Robbins Sloan Torres. One week, 1 LB, 1 OZ. All Arizona could do was look at the tiny human. This was her tiny human, her daughter, her Sofia. Callie had said yes and their daughter was even more beautiful than she had ever imagined, even with all the little tubes and wires. She had never been more proud then she was at that moment. Being a pediatric surgeon, she saw this all the time. Parents hovering over their recovering babies, not knowing what to do with themselves. The blonde always knew what to do, keep a smile and always keep the creators of the tiny humans as happy as possible. Except she was the creator of this one, in some kind of way she was. Maybe not physically, but somehow some way this baby would turn out to be just like her Mama. So she did the only thing she could do, talk her way into the baby Torres heart.
Reaching into the little plastic box, and settling a finger underneath her child's hand she began, "You're a fighter, you know that? You probably get that from your Mommy and Daddy." Her heart dropped a little saying that word, Daddy, but it was the truth, so she continued, "I'm so sorry. So, so sorry.. this was my fault. You're in here instead of in our arms because of me. I know you probably hate me already.. and.. and that's okay, because you are my daughter too. I love you Sofia, because you're mine." The words she was saying were beginning to finally sink in, she never knew how much she could love someone so much from the moment she laid eyes on them.
Arizona's nose turned pink, and her cheeks became a little flushed. She didn't want to cry in front of her daughter just yet, but finally seeing the baby she had been reading to for the past couple of months, and telling her all the classic jokes she knew, made it very hard not to.
"I hate to break it to ya kid. But you have three very overbearing surgeons for parents.. You have a Mommy who misses you already, a Daddy who is extremely proud to call you his daughter already, and a Mama.. Me, who will protect you till my dying day. Me and you were good men in a storm.." Right then she knew that all this happened for a reason, this was her proof, a terrifying proof, but proof that Sofia was already acting as a Robbins. And at that moment she knew they would all make it.
"You walked out on me…" Arizona finally raised her head, just as Callie's hand fell from her cheek. Instead of looking the brunette in the eye, her focus turned to Sofia, who was playing happily with a little red headed boy on the swings. All she could think about was her first conversation with her daughter, how she told her they were good men in a storm. Biting her bottom lip her gaze found her wife's, who had fear and hurt shining through them.
Callie was so taken back by Arizona that she was sure she couldn't breathe anymore. 'How could she even blame me for all this?' she thought. Then it hit her. It wasn't the fact that she left, or Callie's reasons why. It was physically watching her walk away, feeling her heart being ripped violently out of her chest and dragged away. It was the emptiness in her soul that damaged every part of her wellbeing. It hurt Callie even more than Arizona's words, because she knew that feeling and loneliness. She felt the same way when Arizona left her in the airport all alone. It was the same thing, all over again. They both walked away and both came back without warning. Just hope that everything will be the same. It wasn't the same, not then and not now. The carousel continues to go round and round, and won't stop to give anyone a break.
Arizona was the one to break the ice, "I'm not strong enough… I can't watch you walk away again if this ends like it seems to always end. My body, my mind, everything about me, can't watch you walk away again.." Tears fell like a water fall down the blondes cheeks, it was useless to try and stop them. In between each word her voice would tremble a little more than the last, making it harder to say everything she wanted to get out. "But I want this…" shifting so that now she was facing Callie, "I want you… Calliope."
Placing her small hand on the back of Callie's neck she pulled her in, but only resting their foreheads together. Taking in the feeling of being this close again. Their breathing and hearts became one. Steady and slow, neither of them made any other effort to take it a step further or to pull away. Tears had stopped and fear had vanished, for now.
Sofia was the one who interrupted the blissful silence, "Mommy and Mama, I'm hungry!" The little girl said while rubbing her stomach. Arizona wiped the remaining tears that had tried to stain her face and laughed, while Callie tried with all of strength not to make it obvious that she was a little more than excited about what just happened.
"Okay babes, let's go home and I'll make some dinner. God knows what you've eaten all weekend." Callie gave her wife a sly grin and winked.
"Ouch! Hey now, we only ate out twice…. In one day…" The blonde couldn't help but laugh, but her smile instantly faded when she realized they would be taking her home now and this day would be over.
They all got up and headed towards Callie's car, Sofia running as fast as she could to get there first. Callie was almost grateful, she reached out just enough to brush her hand against her wife's. And just like that they locked fingers, and walked closer together, swinging their arms like they used to. As they approached the car Callie opened the passenger door for Arizona making her blush slightly. It was like they were in high school and this was all new to them. Getting Sofia buckled into her car seat, Callie slid into the driver's side and started the car. Checking all her mirrors and picking out the right station for all them to listen to, Callie suddenly became nervous. She was trying to stall so she could work up the nerve to ask Arizona to come to dinner with them, but for some reason she was hesitant. It was the same butterflies in her stomach that she got when she first asked Arizona on a date, when the woman told her she didn't date newborns. The memory made her chuckle.
"Did you forget how to drive? Or are laughing because I'm just so hilarious, I don't have to do anything anymore?" The blonde said as she flashed her famous super magic smile, which made Callie's heart melt, giving her the push she needed.
"Hey Sofia?" She yelled to the back keeping her eyes on Arizona.
"Yes, Mommy?" Sofia said while trying to sing along to Single Ladies by Beyoncé, missing about every other word.
"How would you like it if Mama came and ate dinner with us?"
"Callie.."
"YEESSSS!" The little girl practically screamed and clapped her hands together, then went back to her song with a huge smile on her face.
"Callie are you sure?" Arizona said with a hesitant voice. This wasn't a baby step, this was kind of a big deal. She hadn't been in their home since Callie told her she wanted a divorce. The blonde also knew that once she walked in she wouldn't want to leave, leaving her confused and unhappy.
"Sofia seems pretty sure she wants her Mama at dinner, and as we know only her opinion matters apparently." Callie stated with a sly smile.
"She gets that from you, you know? Both stubborn as hell." A quick giggle filled the car, then silence crept its way back in. A good silence. They stayed staring at each other for a minute more, searching for any sign of regret or fear, but neither could find any. Just love. "If I stay do I get some dessert?" Callie hesitated, wondering which road she should take with that double meaning.
"I have peanut butter cup icing with that hard shell syrup stuff? Is that good enough your majesty?"
"Oh man, you do know how to please a woman Doctor Torres."
Pulling into the drive way, Arizona's nerves started to get the best of her. Callie had reached over during the ride and held the blondes hand on her lap. Bold moves were Callie's thing today, never did she think Arizona would let her touch her let alone continue to hold hands more than just a few seconds.
Even though the ride over was easy, Arizona's mind wouldn't stop reeling. She didn't know whether it was going to be like this once they got into the house, or if they would go back into their old ways and duke it out for hours. That's not what she wanted, she wanted a nice meal with the loves of her life and call it a day. It wouldn't hurt if one of them decided to make a move. Pushing that thought aside, she stepped out of the car and helped Callie get Sofia into the house. Just like any other day Sofia dropped her book bag and ran into the playroom to play with the dolls she missed over the weekend. The Latina helped Arizona out of her jacket and hung them in the closet next to the front door. Something normally Arizona would've done, but this was no longer her home anymore. Tears began to surface, but she quickly swallowed them and followed Callie into the kitchen.
They decided to make a baked pasta dish with a meat sauce, one of Sofia's favorites. The two women moved around the kitchen like time never passed. All the pots and pans were in the same place. Silverware in the same drawers, and as they sat down, each of them sat in the same seats, just like they did a couple months ago. Light conversation flowed between the family, mainly coming from the dark haired child. She was the happiest Callie had seen her in a while, which made her even more positive how much Arizona was needed in this house. Much needed in their lives permanently.
Arizona did the dishes while Callie took their daughter upstairs for a bath and began getting her ready for bed. Right before Callie tucked Sofia into her blankets the girl jumped out of bed and ran down stairs. Frantically looking for something.
"Mama!"
"Baby aren't you supposed to be in bed?" The blonde looked up to see Callie standing in the door way with her arms across her chest.
"Mama?" now standing toe to toe with Arizona she whispered, "What if I have another bad dream… Are you going to be here to take them away?"
The blondes heart sunk deep down into her chest, and knelt down so now they were eye to eye. She reached out and grabbed the small child's face, "Sweetheart…" Callie stepped behind Arizona and interrupted,
"Mama will be here, and she'll take them away if they do come." Callie studied Arizona, but the blonde kept eye contact with her daughter, who now had a small tear forming.
"I'm not going anywhere baby girl." Gently swiping the tear away she kissed her daughter on the forehead and picked her up for a long hug.
"Why don't you tuck her in tonight.." Callie said quietly, as Sofia laid her head on the blondes shoulder. Arizona took her up to her room and stayed with Sofia till she fell asleep. She didn't really want to go downstairs just yet, she didn't know if Callie was trying to tell her to stay or if it was just so Sofia wouldn't cry.
Callie sat on the sofa in the living room. They hardly ever used it well, never really had the chance to use. Thoughts like those always made Callie want to smack herself upside the head, but the moment she saw her wife standing in the doorway those thoughts disappeared.
"Thank you for dinner Callie." She continued to stand there not knowing if she was crossing any lines.
"I think I promised you some dessert!" She started to get up but was stopped by a hand on her shoulder, when she looked up she was met with sparkling deep blue eyes.
"Don't." Arizona sat down closely to Callie, keeping her hand on the brunette's shoulder. The other twirling a piece of Callie's hair, still locking eyes with her. Callie brought one hand up to rest of the blonde's thigh, the other intertwining their fingers and setting them on the back of the couch.
"Stay.." The Latina's voice was faint and barely audible, "I want you to stay." She took her hand off Arizona's thigh and gently scraped the pads of her fingers up her wife's arm until it came to rest on her neck. Grasping tighter she slowly started to bring her own face forward. Barely inches away Callie stopped, almost asking permission to continue, but Arizona was the one to close the space.
Their lips barely brushed against one another's until Arizona pulled away. Her breath became shallow as she tried to exhale, "We can't… Not yet." Closing her eyes because she knows those beautiful brown eyes will convince her otherwise, "I'm not ready."
Callie released her grip and grabbed Arizona's hand, guiding her up the stairs. When they got to hall she turned and asked, "Our bed or the guest?" Arizona's eyes dropped from Callie's and gave her a weak smile.
"I think it's best if I sleep in the guest bedroom." She wrapped her arms around Callie's neck and rubbed their noses together then walked into the bedroom and closed the door behind her. Nope, Callie would not be sleeping tonight.
