Greg hated being stuck inside for too long, but at the same time he didn't mind as long as there was something to play with. Hospitals wasn't some place he liked being in. Especially the night on Halloween.
The 6 year old shifted around underneath the sheets for what seemed like the bigillionth time today and let out a groan. It was too quiet here! Did the Hospital have a bedtime just like he did? That just made things worse. Greg wondered if Wirt hated being stuck in this hospital like he did.
Oh yeah! Wirt! He's been so quiet I almost didn't know he was in here! Greg rolled over to face the other direction where his brother was placed.
"Wirt!"
Silence.
"Wiiiiirt!"
Nothing.
"Wirt…?"
Squinting his eyes in the dark he could see the rise and fall of the older boy's chest, hands still on both sides of him and…eyelids shut over dark orbs.
Oh he's asleep… Greg thought, words laced in a bit of disappointment but then quickly shook it off. Wirt had saved them both of getting turns into tree's AND from drowning! He deserves all the rest he wants!
That was when he noticed a certain change in the others form: He noticed the way his eyebrows furrowed, incoherent words tumbling out of his mouth, and the way his hands clenched at the sheets. A nightmare. Greg knew them well, but he didn't know his older brother could get them. He didn't want Wirt to go through what he has, not as long as he could help it! Greg slipped out of his side of the bed and quietly made his way over to Wirt's bedside.
"Hey Wirt it's okay!" Greg whispered as his brother was struggling to fight the monsters plaguing his sleep. "It's just a bad dream. Wake up!" One of his pudgy hands reached over and lightly rested on top the other's trembling larger ones.
Wirt eyes flew open and he nearly flies out of bed with how fast he sat up, his available hand clenching at his sweat drenched hospital shirt sticking to his chest. His eyes were wide with fear as they looked around frantically before settling before Greg.
"Greg…?" Wirt croaked out and Greg smiled up at the older boy which seemed to seemed to settle his rattled nerves. "Wh-what are you doing out of bed?"
Greg gently squeezed Wirt's hand. "You were having a bad dream and it didn't seem like you were winning so I came to rescue you! I know you'd do the same for me if I had a bad dream."
Wirt stared at his younger brother like he had grown two heads until his eyes softened and he gently squeezed Greg's hand back. "Of course I would."
The two brother stayed in comfortable silence for a couple of minutes before Greg squirmed in place, looking at his feet like they were the most interesting thing in the world. Sometimes they were, especially in boring school.
Wirt lifted an eyebrow. "Greg? You okay?"
Greg bit at his bottom lip and nodded his head.
"Then what's wrong?"
Silence.
"Gre-"
"CanISleepWithYouTonight?"
Wirt blinked. "What?"
"Can I…Can I sleep with you tonight…?" Greg asked shyly, finally looking up at his feet so their eyes could meet. "If we're together than the monsters are no match for us!"
That was sort of true. The real reason was even though it hasn't been for long, Greg has started to finally feel close to Wirt and he didn't want to leave his side. Wirt must of sense that. He smiled softly and lifted Greg up before settling the boy down beside him.
"Sure but you have to go to sleep…"
"Roger that, brother-oh-mine!"
Greg quickly drew the covers back up over them and snuggled against Wirt's side. He felt the elder boy tense a bit before relaxing again and even wrapping an arm around him.
"Hey Wirt?"
"Hm?"
"We made it."
"…Yeah. Together."
