Ch. 9: No rings, No mercy
It was an enormous space station. The rocket docked in the hanger and out stepped Robotnik.
"Isn't it magnificent? It took me quite some time to build it, but it was well worth it. This is my greatest creation: the Death Egg."
"Someone's been watching too many movies."
"Laugh while you can, Hedgehog. Once I've dealt with you, I'll use my Death Egg to force everyone on Earth to give in to whatever demands I might have. Then the Eggman Empire will come to fruition!"
"Talk about delusions of grandeur," Sonic replied with a smirk.
"Laugh it up while you can, Sonic. Soon you and everyone else will know my genius! And on that note…"
Robotnik pulled out a remote and pressed a button. The floor beneath him lowered, taking him elsewhere.
"Still running, Eggman?"
The doctor's face appeared through a small viewing panel in the wall.
"I just don't want to get in the way of your reunion."
"My what now?"
Just then, there was an engine revving. Sonic looked around, and then he looked up. Descending from above was another robot.
"I trust you remember him, Sonic? It's been awhile, and I made some upgrades, but here he is, back once again: Mecha Sonic!"
Mecha Sonic was silver in color, save for the red feet, and at least a head taller, not to mention bulkier, than Sonic. He glared at Sonic with his cold, red eyes. Suddenly, the spines on his back began moving like a buzz saw. Then, surprisingly, he curled into a ball and spin dashed at Sonic. Sonic leapt over him to avoid the attack.
"This thing can spin dash?"
"I told you I made some improvements. I built him for power, but added a bit more speed. He can do more than spin dash."
This time, Mecha crouched slightly and used his boosters to dash at Sonic. When he did so again, this time Sonic countered with a spin dash of his own.
"Show him your other trick, my creation."
Mecha curled into a ball again, but instead of a spin dash, he bounced into the air and tried to land atop Sonic. Sonic dodged, but Mecha tried it again. When he uncurled, Sonic struck him again. Mecha looked unfazed, and repeated his attack. This time, as he bounced into the air, he shot dozens of spikes out in different directions.
"Your cheap knockoff doesn't scare me, Egghead," Sonic taunted, as he struck another blow.
"Come on, Mecha, crush him!"
Mecha performed his bouncing attack repeatedly.
Sonic smirked and said, "You're too slow!"
Mecha was now doing his dash attack again. Sonic managed to time a few hits as the doppelganger passed by.
"Enough with the fancy attacks, my creation! You're twice his size, so just go up to him and hit him!"
Mecha Sonic stomped towards Sonic and started swinging his massive arms. As Sonic dodged his swings, he kept attacking. Mecha raised both his arms and smashed them into the ground, narrowly missing Sonic. In retaliation, Sonic revved up a spin dash. Mecha started to dash towards him. Sonic spin dashed into the air and smashed right into Mecha's head, causing it to spark. Mecha's heavy body fell to the ground…and stayed there.
"No! Even with the upgrades, he still lost to you."
"You can't beat the original, Eggman. If you want to get rid of me that badly, come and get me yourself."
"Not a bad idea."
The wall panel closed…then the doctor emerged from the hidden floor panel. He took off running.
"Come and get me, Hedgehog."
He pressed a button to open the barriers. Sonic gave chase.
"You can't outrun me, Eggman."
"I don't intend to."
He jumped into what appeared to be a cockpit in the floor. It quickly closed and revealed that the cockpit look like Robotnik's face.
"You just can't get enough of yourself, can you? What's the point of having this control panel thing in the floor?"
Suddenly, the floor began to shake. Sonic backed away as the area surrounding the cockpit opened. The cockpit was being raised.
"What the…?"
The cockpit was in fact a huge robot. Sonic only came up to its knees.
"A robot that looks like you…I shouldn't be surprised."
"Behold my Death Egg Robot!"
"That's the name? That's the best you could come up with?"
"I don't need a fancy name for my giant mech to smash you into a pulp!"
The mech began to slowly stomp towards Sonic.
"That thing is slower than Mecha Sonic."
"I don't need to be fast. Get a load of this!"
The booster on the mech's back activated. The mech then flew high into the air. Then there was a target symbol on Sonic. He moved to one side, and so did the target. He moved to the other side, and it still followed him. The mech was now coming down.
"Uh oh."
Sonic sped out of the way just as the mech smashed into the ground. As Robotnik regained his footing, Sonic gave the mech a good hit in the chest.
"That tickled. My turn!"
The arms of the mech detached, shot towards Sonic, and slammed into the ground. Sonic took the opportunity to hit the mech again.
"Try all you might, Hedgehog, but you're no match for me! Take this!"
The arms reattached and the mech performed its flying slam. This time, Sonic dodged the attack by going behind the mech.
"That won't help you!"
A pair of walking bombs ejected from the backside of the mech.
"Well this is annoying," Sonic said, as he jumped over the bombs.
The mech had turned around and began swinging its enormous arms.
"No rings, no sidekick, no mercy! Why not just stand still so I can crush you?"
Sonic dodged the arms and managed to get in hits every time.
"So what if you got a few hits? It's no use. Give up!"
Robotnik began swinging and stomping around everywhere.
"Once you're out of the way, I can continue my perfect plan. Do you think I'm going to let you destroy my Death Egg after all the time and effort I put into it? I've been planning this since our first encounter."
"Sounds like you really need a hobby."
"Well, now that you mention it…"
Sonic gave the mech another hard hit. This time it began to short circuit.
"No! My masterpiece!"
The arms of the mech fell off. Then the legs collapsed under the weight.
"You may have stopped my mech, but you can't stop the Death Egg!"
An alarm started going off.
"What's going on down there?" Robotnik demanded, talking into his console.
"Our power is failing, Doctor," a robot replied, "It seems we've been struggling without a better power source. The Death Egg is descending."
"A self-defeating doomsday device. That's convenient," Sonic said.
"This can't be! It can't end like this!"
There was a rumble…then an explosion.
"I'm outta here. I suggest you do the same, Eggman."
"NO!"
Sonic ran for the nearest exit. Except…
"I didn't realize I was up this high."
Sonic then started falling.
