The boat hit brown, sludgy sand. The sky was black with night and the wind was calm. Angelica stepped out slowly, like she was in a trance. She picked up a handful of sand and let it sink through her fingers.
"I'm home," she whispered. Jack rolled his eyes and sauntered past her.
"Yes, well, let's get to this convent of yours before I decide to leave," he walked ahead and Angelica followed, smiling slightly. A single yellow light was in the distance and Angelica recognized it immediately as Santa Teresa, her old convent. She led Jack there, struggling to keep back tears. It was this same stone path that she would come out and play with her friends every Sunday. It was this beach she would admire the rolling waves. It was this building that she had known as home for twenty years of her life.
Angelica was cautious as she approached the tall oak doors. She didn't want to knock and wake everyone; that was the whole point of being silent. Instead, she carefully opened the door, careful not to make it creak. Jack wasn't really paying attention to her; he was busy admiring the architecture. As they went inside, Angelica put a finger to her lips and then made a slicing motion around her neck. Jack's eyes widened and he put his hands up in surrender.
"Now, if only I could remember where my old room was. It was near the front of the church, with tapestries hanging around it. I shared my room with three other girls: Stephanie, Maria, and Gabrielle. I wonder if they left…" Angelica trailed off, shrugging her shoulders. Jack nodded half-heartedly. Angelica pulled him through the dusty, old halls. It took them a few minutes just to get through one hallway and Angelica could hear Jack's groans of complaint.
"How did you ever navigate around here? It takes two years just to get through one hall. I wouldn't be surprised if I found a ghost-"
"Stop it!" Angelica shrieked, slapping him in the arm. Then she chuckled to herself. "My friends and I always made up stories about spirits lurking through the halls….we scared the younger girls half to death." She stopped suddenly, causing Jack to run into her. "Watch where you're going," she hissed, putting a finger to her lips. "If I remember correctly, my room should be…here!" She pointed to a musty, wooden door. Tiptoeing to the entrance, she motioned for Jack to stay put. "I want you to stay guard, just in case one of the Sisters decides to take a trip down the hall." She opened the door, wincing at the slightest creak.
Stepping into the room, Angelica saw four beds lined up by one another. Three of them were occupied. The one closest to the window was vacant and gathering dust. Judging by the condition of it, Angelica wondered if anyone had slept in it since she left. Padding across the matted carpet, she made her way towards the window, looking cautiously for any signs of awaking from the girls. When she reached the end of the room, she stopped. With the little moonlight that was provided, Angelica felt herself turn pale. As she looked at the bed with its ragged blankets and flat pillows, she saw a wooden frame laying there, rotting away. She edged closer and reached out a hand.
Picking the picture frame up, she saw a piece of yellowing paper, smashed inside, almost like it was too big to fit. In the picture was a younger version of Angelica-maybe three or four years old-and a man. The man was holding the toddler on his lap, smiling genuinely while leaning the girl on his knee. Angelica choked back a sob when she realized that the man was her father. He looked so different back then, almost thirty years ago. His hair wasn't as ratty and he didn't look dirty. His clothes were acceptable for the era, as he was wearing a leather coat, boots, and clean pants. Angelica shut her eyes, letting tears escape, and making a muffled cry in the back of her throat. Her hands trembling, she undid the clasps in the back to take the picture out. As she opened the frame, another, much bigger piece of paper fell out. She caught it and opened it up.
Angelica was looking down at the third and final map. Containing her joy, she turned to Jack and beamed, waving the paper frantically. Forgetting that she was supposed to be quiet, Angelica cried out, "I have it!"
Once she uttered the words, she clapped a hand to her mouth as the three sleeping girls sat up in bed. The one that looked the oldest reached across her bed to a nightstand and turned on an oil lamp. Angelica's mouth was open as she looked at the girl's illuminated brown eyes. The girl seemed to be confused; she didn't know whether to scream in joy or fear from the intruder. The other two girls looked much younger, and let out resonant gasps that filled the entire room. The eldest shushed them loudly and turned back to Angelica.
"Angelica?!" She let out a hoarse whisper, obviously trying not to be loud. Angelica's eyes widened in shock as she nodded quickly.
"Stephanie?" Angelica questioned softly. The girl eagerly smiled and leaped out of bed, rushing towards Angelica. She stood right next to Angelica and wrapped her in a hug. They swayed back and forth while the other girls looked in confusion. Angelica and Stephanie parted and tears were glistening on Stephanie's cheeks.
"I didn't think you would come back…y-you were g-gone and I-I thought you w-wouldn't return!" Stephanie cried, her lower lip shaking. Angelica smiled cheerfully.
"I'm not staying," she said. When she saw the look on Stephanie's face she hastily added, "maybe for a couple of hours, but I can't let the Sisters see me." She reassured Stephanie with one more hug.
"I missed you so much," Stephanie whispered.
"I haven't seen you for ten years. How old are you now?" Angelica asked.
"16," Stephanie replied, almost glumly, "but in two months I'll turn 17, and get a room to myself!" She put her hands on her hips, like she was proud of herself. Angelica laughed wearily.
"That's great, Stephanie. What happened to Gabrielle and Maria? Did they leave?" She looked at the two younger girls, trying not to show her disappointment. Stephanie nodded and pulled the two girls next to her.
"Yes. They left only two years after you did. They were of age, though. When you said goodbye, Gabrielle was 16. Maria was only 15 when she left, but she was allowed because Gabby was 19 and Maria's sister. By the way, this is Adelina," Stephanie pointed to small blond girl. She waved meekly and hid behind Stephanie. "And this is Teresa," she motioned to a tall, skinny girl with black hair. Angelica smiled nicely to them. Stephanie pointed to Adelina and Teresa's beds, and they immediately climbed in and pretended to fall asleep, trying to listen to the elders' conversation.
"Why'd you come back?" Stephanie asked serenely, sitting on her own bed.
"I'm sorry," Angelica said, "I'd love to tell you, but I can't. It's something that my….partner and I have to do alone." She gave Stephanie an honest answer, and Stephanie gave an understanding nod of the head.
"Okay," Stephanie sighed," well, when you came in, did you remember to close entry door all the way?" Stephanie started flicking dust off of the bed. Angelica froze.
"What?" She asked, panicked. If she and Jack didn't cover their tracks, some Sister is bound to find them. Stephanie continued picking cotton out of the blanket.
"Yeah, Sister Alexandria set up a mechanism on the entry hall door to catch unwanted guests. It's nothing tricky, you just have to be a "Sister in Training"- that's what she calls us- in order to know how to shut the door properly. You have to push it in just right," Stephanie started to make motions with her arms, but Angelica needed no further explanation. Out of nowhere, a spine-tingling cough was heard behind them. Angelica turned around and was looking directly to the wrinkled, prune-like face of Sister Alexandria. Angelica had hated her with a passion for the twenty some years Angelica was here. It was a wonder Alexandria wasn't dead. Angelica cringed at the sound of Sister Alexandria's voice.
"You," she said coldly.
Yeahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh! There is chapter 11. It's been like, 43 days since my last update. I'm so so so so so so so so so so sorry. I know what kind of interest you guys have shown….but anyways, 3 things I have to say:
I'm excited to write the next chapter. I think the next plot point between Sister Alexandria and Angelica is going to be sick. Especially because they're both that sassy kind of person.
If you have any ideas for the next few chapters (excluding chapter 12. Like, 13 and on) please either leave it in the comments or PM me or something. I kind of need ideas and I would be MORE than happy to give you a shoutout if you contribute in anyway.
Actually I only had two things to say. Whoops. Hope you enjoyed it!
