Fixing Mistakes
Chapter 18 - Beginning of the End
2014
"When was the last time you were in New Orleans, Stefan?" Katherine asked, she was sitting lounged in the passenger seat with her feet on the dash.
"Most recently? 2010, when Damon and I tried to find a way to release you from your sire bond to him. Didn't work out." Stefan eyed Elena's position strangely, not used to seeing her in such a relaxed pose, "Before that? It was 1942, I was with Lexi and as part of my ripper-rehabilitation she insisted that I reconcile with Damon before I shipped out for the war." He smiled as he thought of his deceased best friend, "We did reconcile, albeit briefly, before he promised to ship out with me. He stood me up, and I went alone."
"Typical Damon." Katherine snorted, she couldn't believe that Lexi would even try to reconcile the two brothers, Stefan and Damon were opposites, Damon craved being a vampire where Stefan was horrified by it. The ripper side of Stefan could be fun to play with, but for Stefan to embrace his monster he had to become emotionless, and that was not what Katherine wanted.
Stefan shot Elena a confused look at her snort, she was usually one of the first people to stick up for his brother, "Not really. Damon told me after we returned to Mystic Falls that back in the forties Lexi had warned him not to join me as he had just murdered twelve witches and she thought that he would be a bad influence on me."
"Lexi was always looking out for you, huh, Stef?" Katherine mused, she had missed a lot of opportunities to spy on Stefan over the years because of Lexi's overprotectiveness. She was not going to lie, she had grown jealous of the closeness between the two, and perhaps if Damon hadn't beaten her to it she might have been the one to rip her heart out.
"She was." Stefan couldn't put his finger on it, Elena's tone sounded friendly enough but he detected an underlining something that felt wrong.
Katherine detected that Stefan was beginning to feel wary, perhaps she hadn't been using her 'Elena' voice enough. Taking a breath, she removed her feet from the dash and straightened in her seat, Elena would sit prim and proper. She smiled at Stefan and asked, "Do you know where Klaus lives? And whom lives with him?" Like Hayley, she wanted to laugh that the poor bitch had gotten herself knocked up by the devil himself. Klaus will probably kill Hayley after the baby was born, not that Katherine cared, now that she was officially dead and living in Elena's skin she no longer had to worry about looking over her shoulder for Klaus anymore. She was free, she rolled her eyes, well almost free, once she got rid of Elena once and for all.
Stefan knew it was a valid question from Elena, but her tone was almost knowing instead of questioning. He shook his head, you are way too paranoid after Silas. He answered her, "I know that Elijah and Rebekah are with him, amazing considering all that Klaus has done to their family."
Katherine felt a pang in her chest at Elijah's name, he left her after he claimed to love her to join his brother and be one big happy family. The bitterness she felt crept into her voice, "Elijah would do anything for his family to be whole again, even trying to forgive the unforgivable."
"How can you know?" Stefan asked.
Katherine cleared her throat, "He left Katherine for his family, and they had a thing for centuries."
"You always thought that Elijah was an idiot for shacking up with Katherine in the first place." Stefan glanced at Elena and smiled wryly, "At least switched off humanity Elena did."
"He is an idiot." He definitely is, Katherine thought painfully, especially when concerning his family. Not wanting to think or talk about Elijah again she reached for the radio and turned it on. When she heard what was playing she turned to Stefan and smirked, "Eighties hair rock? I thought you had better taste than that."
Stefan grinned back, "And who told you that?"
Katherine cocked her head to the side, her hair brushing against her bare shoulder as she wore a tank top, "You are always so sophisticated, Stefan Salvatore."
Stefan chuckled, "You don't know everything about me, Elena Gilbert."
"Then who does?" Katherine ignored the hurt that Stefan was actually flirting with 'Elena', "Damon? Lexi? Or Katherine?"
Stefan scrunched his brow as Elena brought up Katherine, "Katherine only knew the human part of me that she compelled into loving her."
Katherine clenched her fist and gritted her teeth.
"Damon knew me better than anyone else when we kids. He wasn't just my brother, he was my best friend." Stefan felt choked up as he recalled his human relationship with Damon, he looked up to him and he meant everything to him, "Then Katherine came to live with us and our bond would never be the same." Stefan had a long list of regrets but top would always be losing the brother that he loved because of a woman.
Katherine didn't want to hear anymore about how Stefan thinks that she ruined his life, he and Damon would be long dead if she hadn't fed them both her blood. Unable to keep the annoyance she felt out of her voice she asked, "How about since you became a vampire? Who knows you best?"
"Easy." Stefan smiled as he turned to Elena, "Lexi and Caroline."
Katherine's eyebrows shot into her hairline, "Caroline? Seriously! You've only known her a few years."
"It's not the length of time you know someone that makes them know you best, if that were true it would be Lexi and Damon as I've known them longest in this world. But it's not, because it's what you share with them and how you open yourself up to them that matter." Stefan wondered how he became so lucky as to not just have one amazing best friend but two of them, his blonde angels, whom took it upon themselves to make sure he was his best self, and helped him if he fell off the wagon, "Lexi knew the real me and the ripper me, and she never stopped trying to make me become the real me. Caroline," he laughed, "she snuck up on me. Somewhere between helping her transition, saving her from werewolves and Hybrids, and asking her to be my sober coach, she became my best friend and I share everything with her. I hide nothing from her because I know she won't judge me and she's always there for me as I am there for her."
"She's your best friend." Katherine concluded.
"She's my best friend." Stefan repeated. He glanced at the time; midnight, he knew there was still hours to go before reaching New Orleans which is why he put his foot down, "Which is why I need to get to New Orleans as fast as possible. If Klaus has done anything to her..." He clenched his hands around the steering wheel.
Katherine put her hand on Stefan's clenched fist, "I don't believe Klaus will hurt her if he does have her." She smiled at him, "But if he does, be smart about it, Stefan, we don't have the white oak stake Klaus does, we'll be in a house full of Original's, vampires and god knows what else." She fixed him with a serious look, "Be smart." She let go of his hand and went back to her previous slouched position with her feet on the dash, and prepared herself for a long journey.
Stefan swallowed as Elena released his hand. Her words, they reminded him of what someone else would say, they were very Katherine-esq. He shook off his doubts, he was just being paranoid, he had nothing to worry about.
Stefan glanced at the now resting Elena, her lovely features were smoothed in sleep, her position still odd to see from her but she had changed in the last year. She wasn't the Elena he had fallen in love with, then again he wasn't the same Stefan she had fallen in love with either. They had both changed, Elena moved on with his brother, and he had only just begun to move on from Elena.
I'm just being paranoid.
The doubt still lingered within Stefan.
1543
Caroline was sitting on a blanket in the garden of Klaus's estate watching Henrik and Kol chasing each other around having fun. She was enjoying a lovely sunny spring day, the flowers were blooming, their floral scent surrounding her. She had been living here for six months, her and Klaus growing closer everyday as they lived each day as if it would be their last, not forgetting that she could be sent to the future at anytime. Tomorrow they would all be moving out of the castle as Klaus and Elijah had been warned that the Destroyer - Mikael - was spotted not far from where they are. Caroline would be sad to leave as she had reunited with Klaus and her family here, but Mikael was one reunion she could do without, she still hated him for what he did to her and Klaus in the past.
"Hello, my love." Klaus placed a kiss on Caroline's head as he sat beside her, his hand coming up to rest against her cheek, "How has your day been?"
Caroline leant into Klaus's touch, "Good. Relaxing."
"I'm glad, sweetheart." Klaus stroked his fingers along her jaw, loving the touch of her soft skin, "I am sorry that I must take you away from what has been your home since you returned to us but I need to." His brow creased as he showed his wife his concern, "You and I both know what Mikael is capable of."
"You more than me." Caroline rest her head on Klaus's shoulder and wrapped her arm around his waist, "I understand why we have to leave, Klaus." She watched Kol swing Henrik around, his boyish giggles bringing a smile to her face before saying seriously, "I don't want Henrik to see what his father has become. He is still so innocent, even knowing what we all are."
"His innocence can only be protected so far, Caroline." Klaus nuzzled his face against Caroline's, "One day he must make a choice."
Caroline's hand tensed against Klaus's waist, "A choice you will allow him to make?"
Klaus hesitated.
Caroline pulled away from Klaus and searched his face, "You have to let Henrik choose his own destiny, Niklaus." She looked down at her lap for a moment before looking Klaus square in the eyes, "You and I did not have a choice, we were both turned against our will."
Klaus clenched his jaw, "You never have shared with me how you were turned." He reached across and took Caroline's hand, "Tell me now."
Caroline squeezed Klaus's hand, "I was in a car accident," at his confused expression she elaborated, "cars are like carriages without horses. I was with my friends Tyler and Matt, I thought I was fine so I had the paramedics work on Tyler who was hurt. All of a sudden I felt dizzy and I collapsed." It was so long ago and yet it felt like it had happened yesterday, she guessed that you never forget when you died, "The next thing I knew I woke up and I was fine, I had never felt better and I couldn't understand why my friends were looking at me as if I'd almost died."
"And that's how you became a vampire?" Klaus asked, hating that Caroline had been hurt so bad that she'd died but extraordinarily grateful to the vampire who'd fed her their blood, "Whose blood was in your system?"
"No ones." Caroline took a breath as she prepared to tell Klaus the hardest part, "I didn't even know vampires existed back then, but that was only because the vampire who'd used me compelled me to forget."
"Then how did you become a vampire?" Not that Klaus didn't want to hear all that Caroline had to say but he was unsure why she had started her story there if that wasn't how she was turned.
Caroline continued her story, "I was hurt really bad in the accident and it looked like I wasn't going to make it. My best friend knew about vampires as she was dating one of them. She asked him to feed me his blood and he did. Which is why I woke up feeling fine and didn't get why everyone had tears in their eyes."
"So he saved you?" Klaus asked, still unsure if that was how Caroline had been made into a vampire, "That was how you were turned."
"No, I was healthy and human. He'd saved my life by giving me his blood." Caroline answered, hoping Klaus was starting to understand, "Later that night, someone entered my room and held a pillow over my face until I died."
"You died with vampire blood in your system." Klaus clenched his jaw as anger filled him, "You were murdered. Did the person that killed you know that you had vampire blood in your system, or did they want to kill you?"
"They knew." Caroline answered, Katherine killed her to use her to spy on Stefan and Elena and to be the vampire for Klaus's ritual, "They turned me to spy on my friends and to be the sacrifice for your ritual."
"I..ordered your death?" Klaus was horrified at the thought, yet Caroline was alive and she had let slip that he became a Hybrid, so he obviously hadn't killed her, "But you are obviously not dead. What happened?"
"You had nothing to do with it." Caroline tried to reassure Klaus, "The person that killed me had..." she bit her lip as she tried to think how to word it, "incurred your wrath, and was going to offer me up as your sacrifice to wipe the slate clean."
"So," Klaus quirked his brow and smirked, "I had everything to do with it."
Caroline elbowed Klaus and laughed, "Shut up!"
Klaus studied his wife for a moment. Caroline was beautiful, her long golden hair fell in curly waves down her back, her green dress showed off her cleavage and her slender curves. Her lips were curled into a gentle smile, her eyes sparkling with happiness. She was his world and he would do anything for her. With this in mind he asked, "Would you like me to...change...how you were turned?"
Caroline turned shocked eyes on Klaus, "What?"
"You'll either stay with me for the next five centuries or I will have to wait that long to be reunited with you." Klaus fixed Caroline with honest eyes, his face serious, "I will do anything you wish me to. If you want me to change how you were turned then I will." He reached across and palmed her cheek, "All you have to do is ask me, sweetheart."
Caroline swallowed back tears. Klaus's offer was the sweetest offer she'd ever heard and she would love to take him up on it, however... "I would love to have you swoop in and turn me. Trust me, to feast on your blood and become a vampire would be amazing." She gazed tearily at her love as emotions overwhelmed her.
Klaus lowered his head to rest his forehead against Caroline's, "Then say the word, my love. Say it and it's yours." He brushed his thumb against her cheek, "Let me give you the world."
Caroline allowed a few tears to roll down her cheeks, "I want you to, Klaus, I really do, but." She bit her lip before continuing, "As hard and terrifying and confusing as that time was it also made me grow into the woman I am today. I became the person that I'd always wanted to be." She smiled tremulously, "If I let you change that, I might still be that selfish, dying for attention, spoilt brat that I was and you wouldn't have fallen in love with me."
"Oh, Caroline." Klaus smiled, love filling his eyes and his heart, "I could never not fall in love with you."
Caroline ducked her head and blushed, a warm feeling spreading through her chest. A laugh escaped her, who would have thought that to find the man of her dreams all she had to do was become a monster and travel through time? Still chuckling she surged forward and covered Klaus's lips with her own in a short but passionate kiss. Breaking away she grinned at her husband with love and affection, "I love you with all my heart, Niklaus Mikaelson."
Klaus grinned back, "And I love you with every inch of what's left of my heart, Caroline Mikaelson."
Caroline felt so happy hearing that, but she had to ask Klaus something important, "There is something else that I want you to do for me." She had thought long and hard about when she would bring up this particular conversation with him, not wanting to remind either of them of the potential of her abruptly leaving so she had so far not brought it up, now that Klaus had sort of broached the subject she felt that now was the time.
"Anything." Klaus replied, prepared to do anything Caroline asked of him.
"If I were to leave and my wedding ring were to stay behind again." Caroline felt Klaus tense, she knew he hated to be reminded that at any time she could disappear but what she had to say was important and she wouldn't let his discomfort discourage her, "Sometime in the 1920s you will meet a vampire in Chicago, you will become friends with him and Rebekah will fall in love with him before Mikael comes and you have to flee with Rebekah, compelling the man to forget the both of you."
"You have never told me so much detail about the future before, especially my own future. Why now?" Klaus asked, Caroline had shared bits and pieces of their future since she'd been here but never in so much detail.
"Then you can understand how important what I have to say is." Caroline waited for Klaus to nod in acknowledgement before speaking again, "I need you to give him my wedding ring and compel him to forget who gave it to him and to tell him to keep it safe at all times until I turn into a vampire."
"What?!" Klaus exploded, incredulous at Caroline's request, "You want me to give the symbol of our love to a complete stranger, a man you say that I will one day become friends with and my sister will one day fancy herself in love with. To just hand over my most prized possession that by that point I will have carried around for nine hundred years." He stood up, needing to pace in his anger, "For what? For him to give to you when you become a vampire? I can do that, I don't need some random vampire to do that."
Caroline knew that Klaus wouldn't like it but she didn't expect for him to be this upset at her request. Sighing she tried to explain herself, "He's not just some random vampire! One day he will become my best friend and I will trust him with my life."
"And you don't trust me to keep your ring safe until the day I place it back on your finger?" Klaus sounded wounded and looked stricken.
"No! No, nothing like that." Caroline rushed to reassure Klaus, jumping up she sped to him and cradled his face between her hands, "I trust you with everything I am, Niklaus, don't you dare even think anything else." She looked away and blew out a breath before revealing, "It is my daylight ring."
"I know, sweetheart," Klaus knew that it was Caroline's daylight ring but it still didn't mean that her request made any sense to him, "but that doesn't explain why you want me to give it to someone else when I could so easily give it to you."
Caroline shook her head, Klaus still didn't get it, so she would have to spell it out for him, "No, Klaus, it's not." She raised her arm up to show off the lapis lazuli and black kyanite bracelet, "I didn't have my ring spelled by Elijah's witch, she made me a daylight bracelet instead."
Klaus had noticed that Caroline never seemed to take that bracelet off, he just assumed that it was her favourite. Reaching out he touched the black and blue stones, "But why? Why not have your ring spelled?"
Caroline swallowed before replying, "Because my wedding ring IS my daylight ring." She kept eye contact with Klaus as she whispered, "In the future."
"What? That's impossible!" Klaus was shocked, how could the ring he'd bought for Caroline back when they were human to ask her to marry him possibly be her future daylight ring, a ring she had obviously received before they met in her future.
"I know." Caroline agreed with Klaus, it was impossible and yet it had happened, "Believe me I know. That is why it took me so long to answer your proposal when we were human, I was shocked silent at seeing that ring in your hand, MY daylight ring, so impossibly there when I was in possession of it a thousand years later."
"But how?" Klaus was still stuck on how Caroline could have her ring before they'd even met. It was crazy, impossible, unbelievable.
"I don't know, Klaus, I wish I did but I don't." Caroline had no clue how or why it was possible, it just was and there was no point in wasting time trying to figure out the impossible. She still needed Klaus to promise her that he would give her ring to Stefan so that he could one day give it back to her, "I need you to promise me that you will do what I ask and give it to him."
"Caroline..." Klaus was still reluctant to promise that to Caroline.
"Please, Niklaus." Caroline took his hands in hers and held them tight, "I promise you that we will still have a future together one day. I just need you to do this one thing for me. Please."
Klaus tried really hard to resist Caroline's plea but found it impossible with her big blue eyes piercing through him to tug on the strings of his very soul. Damn his wife and her beautiful eyes, they got to him every time. He closed his eyes and mumbled gruffly, "Okay."
Caroline's eyes shot to Klaus, "What did you say?" She held her breath as she awaited his response, praying and hoping it was what she thought she had heard.
"I will do it. I will hand your ring to this vampire when the time comes." Klaus promised, he ached inside at making such a vow but for his wife he would do it.
"Thank you!" Caroline squealed as she launched herself at Klaus, wrapping her arms around his neck and covering his face with kisses.
Klaus wrapped his arms around Caroline's back holding her tight against him. If he could prevent her from ever leaving him by sheer force of strength he would surely win out against whatever force tried to steal her just by the tightness of his hold.
Klaus's promise was a huge relief for Caroline, if the worst should happen and she was thrust through time again at least she could be confident in the knowledge that she would one day be reunited with her ring and with Klaus.
Klaus weaved his fingers through Caroline's hair, pulling her closer to him as he pleaded, "Promise me, Caroline, promise me that you'll be wearing my ring when we meet again."
"I will." Caroline vowed, staring deep into Klaus's eyes, "I will be wearing my ring, I promise." She bit her lip before confessing, "I won't like you very much when we meet and I won't be in love with you yet, but I can guarantee you that I will have my ring."
Klaus smirked, "Then I guess I'll have to make it my mission to make you fall in love with me."
Caroline grinned back, "I look forward to it." She tilted her head to the side as she realised that she couldn't look forward to something she wouldn't go through until she remembered she went through it, "Well, when I remember it anyway."
"What is the name of the vampire I need to bestow your ring to?" Klaus asked, hoping Caroline would divulge the name of his and hers future friend, "Can you at least tell me that, love?"
Caroline wasn't sure she should but she was going to tell Klaus anyway, "His name is Stefan. Stefan Salvatore."
2014
Stefan pulled into the car park of his and Elena's motel. They would drop their things off before heading out to find Klaus. He turned to his companion and roused her by shaking her shoulder, "Elena? Elena, we're here."
"Stefan? What are...?" Katherine blinked the sleep out of her eyes as she remembered why she was in a car with Stefan. She rubbed her hands over her eyes and sat up as she felt more alert, "I'm awake." She peered through the windscreen and noticed the motel. Turning to Stefan she asked smirking, "Are we gonna be roomies?"
"There are two beds, Elena." Stefan replied, before stepping out of the car and retrieving their bags from the trunk.
Katherine stepped out of the car as well, raising her hands above her head she stretched out the kinks, her top riding up and revealing her stomach.
Stefan turned to ask Elena if she was coming when he noticed the skin on show. He turned his eyes away respectively, she and his brother may be going through a rough patch, and she was acting confusingly toward him, but he would not take advantage of her during a vulnerable time.
Katherine ran her hands through her hair, "I need a shower." She wrinkled her nose, "I smell like car."
Stefan chuckled, "Be quick. When you're done we're going to see Klaus."
"You're not going to join me for a shower?" Katherine asked cheekily, a hint of a smile on her face.
"Elena!" Stefan creased his forehead in concern, what is wrong with Elena?
"Separately, Stefan." Katherine threw a wink over her shoulder, "Nice to know your mind is in the gutter." She walked ahead chuckling, it was so fun playing with Stefan.
Stefan shook his head at Elena. She was making light of everything at the minute, flirting with him occasionally, and generally acting strange. He didn't know if it was stress over Damon that had her acting this way but he will keep his eye on her.
Klaus was in his studio sketching by himself. Elijah was off playing daddy with the werewolf incubator and Rebekah was out annoying Marcel elsewhere. During this brief time when neither of his siblings were breathing down his neck badgering him about his impending fatherhood, he took the time to relax and draw his favourite muse - Caroline. An image had been clawing at his brain ever since he woke this morning. It was simple and utterly breathtaking, and yet heartbreakingly impossible.
Klaus had sketched a drawing of Caroline holding Henrik aloft on her shoulders as he reached for an apple hanging from a tree, a basket sat at their feet laden with the fruit. Henrik had a wide smile on his face, Caroline a gentle smile and eyes pouring with love. It was an image that was so beautiful it took his breath away, his beloved brother and the woman he loved and pined for, doing such a simple chore together and looking so unbelievably happy doing it. It was an impossible dream, Caroline has never and would never meet Henrik as he had been dead for well over a thousand years.
Klaus had no idea where such an image came from. He had never before dreamt about things from his human life and vampire life at the same time. Henrik was a part of his human past, and Caroline was a part of his future.
Where has this come from? Why am I dreaming of such impossible things?
Stefan knocked on the door of Klaus's compound, Elena stood beside him. He was anxious to see Klaus so he could find out where Caroline was.
The door opened, a dark skinned man with an afro answered the door, "Yes?"
"I am here to see Klaus." Stefan gestured to himself and Elena, "We are old friends of his and need to speak to him."
"Yeah right, like anyone can be friends with Klaus." Diego rolled his eyes at his statement but stepped aside to let them enter, "Whatever man, just wait inside and I'll go get him."
Stefan and Katherine entered the compound, there were groups of vampires sitting around the courtyard, most ignored them but some gave them a quick glance before returning to what they were doing.
Katherine eyed the assembled vampires with distaste, "Looks like Klaus now has a few unkempt followers." She snorted in amusement, "Hardly the army he always wanted."
Stefan eyed the vampires with a wary eye, "Yeah well, if he does have Caroline we might have to fight them."
"We'll have to wait and see." Katherine straightened up and did a count. She's pretty sure she could take them, she had centuries of experience, no one would best her.
Klaus came down the staircase and raised his eyebrow in surprise at seeing Stefan and Elena there. Strolling over he smirked, "My old friends!" He clapped his hands together and eyed the two suspiciously, "What do I owe the pleasure? Or is this business? One of your little friends didn't get bit by a werewolf again did they?"
"No werewolf bites this time, Klaus." Stefan glared at Klaus, watching him closely to see his reaction, "I'm here about Caroline."
Klaus face went blank, "What about Caroline?" He was positive that Caroline wouldn't have told anyone about their time in the woods but he couldn't be sure so he kept his face neutral.
"You know what!" Stefan stepped closer to Klaus, "You come to Mystic Falls and leave in the blink of an eye and then Caroline disappears!" He pushed his finger into Klaus's chest, "Leading me to conclude that you took her."
Klaus took Stefan's finger in his hand bending it backward and then twisting his wrist down hard, breaking it, "Do not dare to think you can touch me, ripper, because I will rip your heart out and I won't even blink." His eyes grew hard in his rage, "Despite our previous friendship." He pushed Stefan away from him, "I do not have Caroline. I did see her when I was in Mystic Falls, we talked and then I left."
"Then where is she?" Stefan hissed as he pushed his bone back into place, his healing kicked in almost immediately and began to fix his wrist, "We have looked everywhere for her! None of us have seen her in days." He winced as he remembered the fear he felt when he found Caroline's cell phone in the woods, "I found her cell abandoned in the woods near a scorch mark."
Klaus shot his head to Stefan, his eyes showing panic, "Is she...?" He couldn't say or even think that word in relation to Caroline.
"No! She is definitely alive, we just have no clue where she is." Stefan reassured Klaus, so grateful in that moment that Bonnie was the Anchor and could therefore know instantly whether Caroline was alive or not, because if she had died she would have passed through Bonnie and they would have known.
"I better call a witch then to locate her." Klaus stormed off but not before hissing, "Perhaps when I find her I will make sure she stays here with me where I can protect her as you lot are so useless at it."
Katherine rolled her eyes, "Klaus is still a drama queen, I see."
"He is also an annoyingly valuable asset to us." Stefan thought about graduation and Damon's werewolf wound, fatal if not for Klaus's blood and luckily for them he was already on his way to Mystic Falls when they needed him, "If one of us ever gets bitten by a werewolf..."
Katherine finished Stefan's statement, "Caroline is the only one who can convince Klaus to hand over his blood."
"Where the hell is she?" Stefan wondered, anxious and scared for his best friend.
Klaus threw open the door to Davina's room and stormed inside. The dark vibes of rage were rolling off of him, anger vibrating from his every pore.
Davina looked up as her door slammed shut. Klaus was in her room and he looked beyond pissed, "What do you want?"
"I would advise you, little girl, not to test me tonight." Klaus growled a warning to Davina, "I need a locater spell." He waved his hand dismissively at her, "Simple for a witch the likes of you."
Davina hated to be ordered around, especially from a monster such as Klaus. Crossing her arms across her chest she shook her head, "No." She raised her eyebrows, "Why should I do anything for you?"
Klaus shot across the room, wrapping his hand around Davina's throat and pressing her down into the mattress, "I am not in the mood to play helpless little Davina tonight."
"Good!" Davina choked out as she struggled against Klaus's tight hold on her throat, "Because I am not helpless." She raised her hand to his face and shot a bolt of power towards him sending him flying across the room.
Klaus sat up from his position on the floor, his eyes turning golden as his veins began rippling, his beast rattling against his cage dying to be let out, "I warned you." He launched at Davina and sunk his teeth in her neck, enjoying a mouthful of blood before releasing her, "Do not test my patience." He snarled, his lips stained red with her blood, "Do the spell or I will slit your throat myself and throw your corpse to the witches."
Davina massaged her throat as she glared at Klaus, she believed his threat that he would kill her without a second thought. Still, she wasn't going to do this free when her friend needed her, "Pardon Josh and I will do your spell."
Klaus smirked, "Negotiating, sweetheart?" He laughed with amusement, "You have nothing that I want therefore you have no leverage."
Davina straightened her spine and repeated, "Pardon Josh, or you will have to kill me." She held Klaus's gaze, not willing to back down until he met her demand.
Klaus glared at Davina for a few more moments before a small smile adorned his face, "Brave little witch. You remind me of someone I very much care about." At the thought of Caroline his heart jumped in his chest and he softened for just one moment, "Very well. I will give Josh his freedom after you cast the spell."
Davina breathed a sigh of relief, Josh was free from Klaus and his threats to kill him. She asked Klaus, "Do you have the things that I need?"
"Yes." Klaus decided to give Davina a bit of freedom in exchange for her help. He opened the door to her room, "Do you wish to do it here? Or in the courtyard?"
"Outside?" Davina couldn't help the excitement in her voice, "Of course I want to be outside."
Klaus stepped aside, "Then let's go."
Davina all but ran past Klaus in her rush to feel a bit of fresh air. Klaus followed behind her.
Diego laid a map on one of the tables, and various tools for the spell.
Davina ran down the stairs and just stood in the fresh air for a few moments, enjoying the gentle breeze on her skin.
Klaus reached the bottom of the stairs and interrupted Davina's admiration of being outside, "There is all that you require."
Davina sat down at the table, "Do you have their blood?"
"No." Klaus answered gruffly.
Davina nodded, mumbling to herself, "Other spell it is then." She mixed up a pouch of what looked like dirt before asking, "Whom am I searching for?"
"Her name is Caroline Forbes." Klaus answered, pointing to a specific location on the map, "She was last seen in Mystic Falls, Virginia."
Davina poured the mixture on the map before saying the incantation, "Phasmatos Tribum, Nas Ex Veras!" She kept repeating the spell as the mixture moved across the paper. It circled Virginia before moving across North America and then crossing the Atlantic Ocean before settling over England. Davina's head flew back as she gasped.
"What's happening?" Stefan asked concerned.
"I am not sure." Klaus replied, he had never seen a witch react like that during a locater spell before.
Davina had a line of blood coming out of her nose as her eyes moved rapidly and images ran through her head. After a few moments the images stopped and she slumped against her chair.
"What did you see? Where is she?" Klaus asked, he needed to know before Davina passed out.
"Not wh-where but wh-when." Davina's voice faltered as her body neared passing out, "She is far, far back." Then her eyes rolled back into her head and she slumped against the table, the strain too much for her.
"What did she mean by 'when'?" Katherine asked, she thinks she has an idea but it must be impossible.
"We all know what that means." Klaus answered distractedly. He called over Diego, "Take her back to her room and make sure she's comfortable."
"Klaus?" Stefan got Klaus's attention, "Does that mean what we think it does?"
"Yes." Klaus replied, "She is a very powerful witch, if anybody could sense that it would be her." He balled his hands into fists before picking up the table and launching it across the courtyard to smash against the wall.
Stefan stood by and watched as Klaus tore up the courtyard. Smashing chairs and tables and growling at any vampire that came near him. Stefan called his name, "Klaus!"
"Aaargh!" Klaus screamed a final time as he punched a hole in the brick of the wall. He stood there panting in rage for a few moments before growling, "I will find her. No matter where or when I will come for her." He grinned maniacally, "And when I find the person whom did this to her I will rip out their spine and stab them with it." He turned his head to glare at Stefan and Elena, "You two will not leave New Orleans until Caroline is safe and in my arms." He whooshed over and crowded over them, his hands settling around their throats, "Do you understand me?"
"Yes!" Katherine croaked as she tried to struggle out of Klaus's hold.
"I'm not going anywhere until Caroline is safe." Stefan vowed. He would stay and help Klaus find Caroline.
"Then we are on the same page." Klaus squeezed once more before releasing their throats. He turned around and began marching away, needing to be in his solitude to process Caroline's disappearance, "Elijah is around here somewhere. Find him and tell him what has happened." Then he was gone.
Katherine and Stefan asked one of the vampires where they could find Elijah and headed toward his location. They entered his study and found him there with Hayley.
Katherine clenched her hands as she noticed the way Elijah was looking at Hayley, his eyes held a glow and his fingers touched her back. She wanted to growl and rip the werewolf whore to pieces but she restrained herself for the moment.
"Elijah." Stefan greeted first Elijah and then the girl who'd betrayed them all, "Hayley." His voice held surprise at her presence and underlining anger for what she'd done.
"Elijah." Katherine hated how her voice softened at his name, he had broken her heart and deserved no warmth in her voice.
"Stefan. Elena." Elijah greeted as he subtly moved away from Hayley, "What brings you both here? I believe my brother and sister have only recently came back from a trip to Mystic Falls."
"Even Katherine's death is old news now." Stefan replied, not sugar coating his words to Katherine's former lover, "Caroline's missing and we require yours and Klaus's help."
The sound of wood cracking was heard.
Katherine turned to face Elijah and almost gasped. His eyes were bloodshot with tears and his grip on the table had broken it clean down the middle.
"What did you say?" Elijah must have misheard Stefan, there was no way his family would keep something that monumental from him.
"I'm sorry." Stefan looked apologetic, unaware that Elijah didn't know about Katherine.
Katherine cleared her throat, "Katherine became human after El- I gave her the cure." Her voice was raspy from the emotion she tried to hide, "Silas drank her blood, taking the cure from her veins and she began ageing, her five hundred years catching up to her." Katherine swallowed before continuing, "She had a heart attack and died days later."
Elijah clenched his eyes shut as grief overwhelmed him. Katherine was gone, yet another woman he loved was gone from this world. He left her, abandoned her, in Mystic Falls to chase after his brother only to start lusting after the woman whom carried Klaus's child.
Katherine watched the pain on Elijah's face and she knew it was real. He hadn't been there to say goodbye to her because he hadn't known that she was dying. She felt relief, she had been heartbroken when he didn't show and now she knew it wasn't because he didn't care about her, it was Klaus and Rebekah keeping it a secret.
Elijah couldn't stay in that room with Hayley any longer. He moved to the door and mumbled, "I want to be alone." Then he was gone.
"So..." Hayley looked between Stefan and Elena and grinned, "The bitch is finally dead, huh?" She chuckled, "I guess her luck ran out."
"And you got knocked up." Katherine smirked, "Who is the unlucky bastard?" She already knew of course but she delighted in making Hayley squirm.
Hayley winced, her hand covering her bump as she wished for Elijah's solid presence beside her, "Not that it is any of your business," she wrapped her shawl tighter around her, "but it's Klaus's."
"How?" Stefan asked incredulously, "Vampires can't procreate, we are dead, so how is that possible?"
"Witchy mojo? A miracle?" Hayley shrugged her shoulders, "I don't care. It happened and I'm dealing with it." She straightened her shoulders, "I'm a survivor."
"Right." Katherine snorted, Hayley had only survived this far because Katherine protected her until she didn't need her any longer, and if she hadn't called Klaus to save her she would have been long dead by now.
Stefan eyed Elena with concern, she was acting so different to how she normally would.
Katherine did not want to be in this room any longer, "I'm gonna go and explore." She turned and left the room, her heart pulling her toward a certain man. Before she knew it she was stood outside his door, for a long moment she just stared at the wood before finally knocking.
"Come in." Elijah's voice called out, choked with emotion.
Katherine took a deep breath before pushing down on the handle and entering Elijah's room, "Hey." She closed the door behind her.
Sophie was stood in a crypt, candles lit on the alter before her as she waited for the darkness to appear. The candles began flickering and the crypt grew colder, her breaths creating a frost cloud.
Boom.
"Time is now, child." He said as he appeared in the crypt.
"Your family is closer to you than ever." She reminded Sophie, her voice a silken promise, "One last time and you will be reunited forever."
"I'm ready." Sophie promised, she was ready for this to be over and to reunite with her family.
The darkness shared a smile before saying in unison, "Let us begin."
"Nera!" Ara called her sister, her voice high with excitement, "Come here."
Nera came over to her sister, "What is it, Ara?"
"The darkness is with Sophie." Ara told Nera what was happening, "The spell will be cast any moment soon."
Nera took a deep breath and released it, she could feel her power under her skin electrifying her nerves, satisfied she nodded, "I am ready."
Ara kept her gaze on the mirror and watched Sophie and the darkness, "The moment to hijack is near, sister."
Nera weaved her fingers through Ara's and felt the pull of the magic within her being as she latched on to the darkness and Sophie's spell. She changed the spell without their knowledge to delay the magic for the time they needed.
Ara and Nera blinked out of existence as they travelled through the ages.
The time to save Caroline was NOW.
