A Demon's Past
Chapter 2: A Brand New Place
It had been a few days since Sebastian had first saw Alaina. Even though she took the blame for the incident, Sebastian's father had still grounded him and he had not been much of anywhere. He was lying on his bed when he heard a knock on the door.
"What are you doing here?" Sebastian was still mad that the girl now standing in his doorway had gotten him into trouble.
"You haven't come back to play!" Alania whined.
"I can't."
"Well why not!?"
"Because you're the Young Lady of the house." Sebastian repeated his father's words from his scolding.
"So?" Alania questioned. "Come on!" She grabbed Sebastian's hand and dragged him down the hallway.
Sebastian pulled his hand out of hers causing Alaina to turn around confused.
"If I play with you I'm going to get into trouble again!" Sebastian said defiantly.
Alaina giggled. "Then we just won't get caught silly! Come on!"
She grabbed Sebastian's hand once again and led him through the castle. They turned into the kitchen where servants were busy cleaning the dishes and throwing out leftover food from dinner.
"It's this way." Alaina said as they went through a back door.
The brightness of the sun hurt Sebastian's eyes. Alania led him through the courtyard and stopped in the front of the forest surrounding the town.
"What are we doing here?" Sebastian asked.
"When I was taking my lessons in the tower today I saw this place I want to find!" Alaina exclaimed and ran into the woods.
"Wha- Wait for me!" Sebastian yelled after her.
As they walked through the woods Alania was fascinated by everything. The different wild flowers, the large trees, even the dirt was interesting.
"Look at this!" Alaina smiled as she showed Sebastian what was in her hand.
"It's a rock." Sebastian stated confused. What was so interesting about a rock?
"But it's got sparkles in it! See?" She moved the rock around in all directions and parts of it caught the light shining in her hand.
"So? It's just a rock. They're everywhere." Sebastian shrugged. He was not as amused as Alaina was.
"Well I'm keeping it." She smiled.
"You don't get out much do you?"
"Not really. Miss Bell has me in my lessons a lot."
Alaina would stop and pause at every little noise wondering what it was. Occasionally she would run in the direction of a noise she heard but would soon set back on her quest to find the place she saw in the tower. Sebastian didn't talk much. Alania mostly kept the conversation going all on her own, but Sebastian found her entertaining. They wandered the woods for what seemed hours when Alaina stopped.
"Hmm." She wondered putting her hand on her chin looking in every direction. "Maybe it's this way?" She said as she one again took off.
"You mean you don't know where were going!" Sebastian yelled angrily.
"Nope! But this is fun huh?" She smiled.
"No! No! Being lost in the woods is not fun! Are you crazy! How are we going to get back!"
Sebastian was on edge; the sky above them was becoming orange with the setting sun.
"There!" Alaina exclaimed suddenly, pointing in the direction she wanted to go.
They ran and came to a large clearing overlooking the ocean. There was a single tree in the center surrounded by wild flowers. You could see the reflection of the setting sun dancing in the water. The sky was painted with reds, oranges, and blues.
"Ha!" Alaina yelled triumphantly. She twirled with her arms spread then fell into the patch of flowers giggling. She looked over at Sebastian and smiled.
"Pretty cool huh?"
"Yeah, this is pretty cool." He admitted and sat down at the base of the tree.
They sat there talking and laughing, and taking in the beauty of the new place they had found.
"We should get back. It is going to get dark soon." Sebastian said after a few minutes.
"Okay." Alaina replied as she hopped up from her bed of wild flowers.
"This way is the way we cam from." Sebastian stated pointing back towards the forest.
"Okay." Alaina said as they set off.
They began running through the forest, trying to get back to the castle before anyone had noticed they were missing. Sebastian began to panic. He had no idea how long they had been gone and the sun was starting to set. They finally saw the castle in the distance and soon came to the back door. Sebastian and Alaina quietly made their way through the kitchen and through the hallways before ending up in front of Sebastian's door.
"Today was fun!" Alaina said.
"Yeah. It was." Sebastian smiled.
"Can we go back sometime?" Alaina asked her eyes wide with anticipation for Sebastian's answer.
"Sure." Sebastian shrugged.
"Hehe!" Alaina grinned as she gave Sebastian a hug. "Thank you for playing with me!" She said as she turned around and ran up the steps towards the main part of the castle.
As Sebastian turned back to go into his room he smiled, wondering when he would see Alaina once again.
