Chapter Nine
Sunday 28th December 2014
A few days had gone by since he had seen Stevie, he missed her, his heart was aching in a way he just couldnt explain. He had wanted to call her time and time again but he knew he had hurt her to much to push her. There was no knock before his office door swung open, the woman looked furious and he sighed "Im sorry... Anna-Marie I had to put people on the grave yard shift" she marched over and chucked her timesheet onto his desk "New yeas eve Smithy... our first new years eve.." he glanced up "Im sorry but thats the joys of this job... I have had to do them before... everyone has.." she frowned "Is this about Stevie?" she asked and he sighed "How can a work rota be about Stevie?" she shrugged "Everything always is" he glared up at her "She is my wife.. maybe that should tell you something.." she nodded "Clearly you think it should... but in case you have forgotten you are divorcing her... just remember which one of us you come home too". He watched her strom out and past the man stood in the door way, he smiled at Smithy. The Inspector struggled to return it as the fair haired man rested down infront of him "That sounded... intense?". Smithy nodded "I dont know how much longer I can take this Mickey... Anna-Marie is everything a man could want.. she is funny, gorgeous.. smart.." Mickey cut in "But she aint Stevie mate... and she never will be". Smithy sighed "When Stevie first left me... I really wanted to hate her... I turned everyone against just because I couldnt manage it.. however much I tried I couldnt hate her... I will always love her... and since I found out what he... I need her back Mickey... I need her to be mine again... to know that I will do anything to make things right.. I need her to forgive me". Mickey frowned "That may never happen.." Smithy rose to his feet "I know what I did was awful and I can never forgive myself but... I would do anything for Stevie... you know she went on a date last night" Mickey shook his head "She still wont talk to me... how did it go?" he asked. Smithy shrugged "I havent asked... what am I meant to say... just thinking about her having a good time with him is eating away at me". Mickey sighed as he rose to his feet and headed to the door "You need to tell her mate... win her back... but before you do that you know what you have to do?". Smithy nodded "Anna-Marie". Mickey smiled "You cant keep stringing her along.. its not fair".
Opening the door she smiled at the man stood in front of her. "Smithy... what are you doing here?" he grinned "I brought you some things" he reached down and produced a bag, he gave it to her and smiled "Here take this in.." she moved to the bed and placed it down before turning back to him, she covered her mouth as she stared at him holding the beautiful gown. "My wedding dress..." tears fell freely down her cheeks "You said you burnt it.." he nodded "I know.. Im sorry.. I said a lot of things that I shouldnt of.." he hung it on the door frame before gesturing to the bag on the bed "It wont bite you" he smiled, she moved to the bag and unzipped it "I know I had told you I had desrtoyed all this too but.. I want you to have it". She glanced in at the photoframes and albums before slowly pulling them from the bag, she glanced through the photographs "I thought this was all gone... I thought.." tears rolled down her cheeks as she looked at her wedding album. "Thank you... thank you for not destroying it.." he smiled "I guess a part of me... always hoped we would get back together.. even when I thought you had cheated... I still wanted you back.. you were still my Stevie.. my love and my life" she moved to him and pulled him into a cuddle. "I love you Smithy... you no that dont you" he smiled "You still love me?" she placed her hand to his cheek "I love you Smithy but.." he cut in "Please dont... we dont need a but" she sighed "There has to be a but..." she took his hand and he sighed as she spoke "But we cant get through this... Smithy your best friend raped me..." he shook his head "Please dont Stevie" she smiled "Smithy... you will never look at me in the same way... I will always be 'that' woman". Smithy sighed "So what do we do now?" he asked. Stevie smiled "We be brave... and we move forward.. we accept our marrige is over... and I need you to make things work with Anna-Marie.. to have the future we planned" she pulled him into a hug "But more than anything I need to know how important we will always be to each other" he kissed the top of her head "I love you Stevie" she glaced up at him "I love you too Smithy".
Wednesday 31st December 2014
Smithy stood watching the woman from afar, this wasnt fair, life was so unfair, she was his wife, the woman he wanted to spend his life with and here she was drinking and laughing with another man. This wasnt fair Stevie was his life and although he deseperatly wanted for her to be happy, he wanted it to be with him and he knew how selfish he was being but he loved her more than he could ever imagine. She pushed her blonde locks behind her ear once again and her head swung back with laughter. "D'you want another?" the bar mans voice interupted his thoughts "Er... yeah... can you get them one too" he gestured towards Stevie and the man she was stood with. He watched the man do his beer and place it infront of him before doing the other drinks and taking them to the couple. He watched as she shook her head and then the barman gesture towards him, he held his glass up to her and she nodded slightly smiling at him before turning back to the man sat next to her. Smithy continued to watch the small blonde as he drank his beer.
"Friend of yours?" the man infront of her asked and she nodded "Sort of.. he is my husband... we are in the process of getting divorced". He nodded "So you are on good terms?" she nodded "He means a lot to me... he will always be a big part of my life.." he smiled "Why did your marrige end?" he asked and she gulped, taking a quick look at her husband who now stood at the machine in the far corner, no doubt gambling away a small fortune. "Erm... its a long story but... his friend raped me and I struggled to come to terms with it... and it understandably hit him very hard". The man nodded "I can imagine.." he looked at Smithy as he downed his drink "I erm... I have to go Stevie.." she frowned "We are seeing the new year in together... its only just after nine.." he nodded "I am sorry love.. I will call you tomorrow.." she shook her head "No you wont... give me some credit.." he sighed "Im sorry... this isnt something I want to get involved in" he grabbed his coat from the bar stool behind him and headed towards the door. She turned to the barman and smiled "Can I have a double vodka?" she asked intent on drowning her sorrows. Ten minutes or so had passed before he rested down next to her "Ok?" he asked, she nodded slighty "Brilliant" she replied sarcastically. "Where has your friend gone?" he asked. Stevie sighed "I told him about Greg and what happened... and you and he suddenley had cold feet.." Smithy smiled "Im sorry". She shook her head as she glanced up at him "No your not Smithy..." he sighed "Alright Im not sorry... but I want you to be happy... you deserve that.." he moved to her and placed a kiss to her forhead "You want another one?" he asked and she nodded "Absoulotly". He ordered them a drink before leaning towards her and kissing her cheek "The bloke is a mug Stevie... to let a bird like you go... he must need his head tested". She smiled "You let me go.." she glanced up at him through her long eye lashes, he could see the flirting in the way her eyes ran over him, scrutiniesing every inch of him and he smirked "And I have regretted it every moment since".
An hour or so had passed and the flirting had continued, it was so amazing to see Stevie so at ease and he wanted it to last forever, he couldnt bear for it to end. He couldnt help but stare at her as she mumbled on about something that had happened at work, in all honesty he wasnt really listening, he was too in love to take it in, he was too happy for anything to really sink in. She glanced at the empty glassess and smiled "Another Mr Smith?" she asked. He leant towards her "What do you say to getting out of here... a taxi.. a bottle... and a good old.." she cut in "Think very carefully about how you will end that sentence.." he laughed "Chat... a good old chat". She nodded "I will pop to the loo... get a bottle". She topped up her make up before heading out in search of her husband, he was stood at the door, her coat in hand and the remainder of her drink, she took it and finished the small amount in one. They headed out the door and towards the taxi he had called. He had no idea what was going to happen but he loved her and this was his one shot and God knows he would put everything into getting tonight right, he wouldnt risk losing her again, he opened the taxi door and they climbed inside before pulling off in the direction of his home.
