Chapter 17:
The Face-Off of Rivals
Bella was frozen for a moment on the front porch seeing both Dean and Edward standing looking at each other from opposite ends of the yard. She was headed out there originally to warn Dean that they were getting company but immediately realized that it was way too late to warn him. Edward and Dean seemed to be having a staring contest with each other and that was starting to make her nervous as hell that something was about to blow. Her mind was already taking in the differences between the two males, for they were almost something like night and day in her eyes. While Edward was perfectly dressed in designer slacks and a cream button down shirt with his copper hair in a sexy mane Dean was actually only in a pair of ripped up jeans and boots showing off his lean muscled upper half.
Edward's lean muscled body showed underneath his clothes and pale, faultless skin was enchanting Bella had to admit, but Dean's tanned chest and raw muscle that was exposed on this cloudy but warm day was her undoing. The pale vampire may have allure and strength in him but bring in the presence of Dean pushed that allure back with that drop dead sexy smirk of his as he stood there half naked. She had to physically shake her head to push her thoughts away from what she wanted to do with the smirking Winchester male that was leaning against the impala. Both males eyes were drawn to her the moment that she stepped out and she found herself frowning at the tone Edward was using to question her like a little kid. With only a quick glance in Dean's direction she could tell that the eldest Winchester brother was close to making Edward pay for opening his mouth to her like that.
The brunette didn't answer Edward right away as she stepped off Charlie's front porch, her eyes flickering between the Winchester bad boy that she always loved and the gentlemanly Cullen that captured her heart briefly. She knew that this wasn't going to be easy, she knew that from the beginning, but she was a Swan and Swans didn't back down in telling the truth. "Edward," She spoke calmly as she moved herself across the yard so she was between the males but not far enough that she blocked their view of each other. "He would have known either way. It is kind of what he does." Bella frowned in Edward's direction, her body language showing anger.
The vampire had been watching Bella since the moment she walked on to the front porch and was a little shocked and peeved that she didn't answer his question right away. He didn't like the way her eyes lingered on the other male and only proved to him in his own mind that Bella was spending time in the wrong company. The Bella he knew only had eyes for him and he didn't like her even being near another male like this cocky guy across from him. He didn't like the changes that he was seeing in her from the change of clothing she wore to the more confident way that she was walking lately. Edward knew that it had something to do with the male that was leaning against the classic impala with the smirk across his face.
He wasn't usually one to read the minds of others intentionally, but there was something about the response that Bella just gave and the ease of which this man seemed to be with Bella had him on edge.
I know you listening to my thoughts, vamp, but I wouldn't be doing that if I were you. You might not like what you find.
Then Edward was assaulted by images from Dean's mind that certainly no gentleman would ever think of but by the smirk on Dean's face he seemed quite pleased with himself. Edward couldn't believe that Bella could be close to any male that had the x-rated mind that this adult male had and he was more determined to get his love away from him. "What are you talking about Bella?" Edward asked confused by how his mate would think that this male would have the sense enough to figure out what the Cullens were. "You are one of a kind when it comes to figuring out things, how would he figure it out?"
Bella wasn't going to say it to Edward, but the way he was questioning her was getting on her nerves and by the look on Dean's face he was agreeing with her. "There is a lot that you don't know, Edward. A lot that I need to tell you, but I can't tell you if you keep questioning everything I say." The young brunette's tone was almost close to bordering on harsh as she spoke, but the patience she had in the beginning was wearing thin. "And like I already said it is what he does, It is his job to figure out things that others can't. It is also my job which is how I figured it as well." She wanted to smirk at the confused look on Edward's face but was able to hold back the urge knowing that she had to tell him everything and that she wouldn't be able to go back to Edward's place to explain. Now, that Dean and Edward met there would be no way to stop the butting of heads and Bella was afraid of just what would happen between the two males.
"Bella-"
"Will you stop interrupting Edward maybe I could actually explain things." Bella cut off whatever Edward was going to say and gave him a withering look. There was a snort from behind them in Dean's direction but the girl didn't bother to turn around and look at the Winchester boy already knowing what look would be on his face.
Man, for a creature that is over a 100 years old you really haven't learned to shut up when a woman is pissed off. I pity you… Dean was enjoying listening to the conversation and sending his thoughts out to Edward like he was but he was impatient for his own turn to converse verbally with this vampire.
"I am trying to figure out the best way to explain this to make as simple for you to understand and hopefully to realize what I am about to tell you was always meant to happen." Bella looked up to meet Edward's eyes, chocolate brown almost clashing with honey gold. "There is more than just vampires and shape shifters like the Quileutes out there in the world, much more…" Bella paused for a moment. "You may not believe me, but that is the honest truth. And creatures are not the only things out there in the world. There are people like me and my father, like Dean and his brother, and my friend Jasmine and her father… We are Hunters. We are the ones that keep people from getting eaten by their nightmares."
Edward had a look of shock on his face and Bella could tell easily that he didn't believe what she was telling him. "Love, I don't know what they did to you, but in my all years I have never encountered anything but other vampires and other shape shifters. There is no such thing." He went to take a step forward only to find that Bella took a step back and suddenly the male that he gathered from Alice's visions and Bella's words was named Dean. He went to say something else when he was invaded by Dean's thoughts again, images of things he couldn't grasp.
There was flashes of Dean, Sam, Bella, and Jasmine in various areas, various situations… Fighting all kinds of creatures that shouldn't exist.
Ghosts…
Ghouls…
Shapeshifters that he had never seen before…
Vampires and Werewolves types that he always believed were faked…
And creatures that were so human looking but weren't… Flashing black eyes… Demons…
Then fire and screams of torture, flesh being carved into with knives… Dean's screaming face in pain….
The images then swiftly disappeared like the last part Edward wasn't suppose to see…
The copper head vampire felt like he was in shock… There was no way that those things were real, but there was no way this man's thoughts would be lying Edward would know. His sweet Bella had been fighting these horrible creatures for years beside people that should have never dragged her innocence into this. He looked into Dean's proud face for a moment before his eyes shifted back to his Bella that Edward knew he had to get her out away from these people. Edward had to save her before she did something she regretted or ended up dead from one of these creatures she insisted on hunting. "Alright Bella. Your friend here convinced me. But there is no need for you to live that life anymore. You are with me now. These people can't drag you into dangerous situations anymore."
"Excuse me?…" Dean's tone of voice came out low and dangerous like the Hunter he was known for. "We have never dragged her anywhere… Bella was born into it. But you want to talk about dangerous situations, vamp… How about the fact that there is still a nomad of your kind roaming around wanting Bella's blood? Or about the fact that you abandoned her when she was already breaking over something else and almost left her completely defenseless?" Dean was just getting on a roll as he stepped in right behind Bella to where she could almost feel his bare chest against her back and feel the tension rolling off of him.
Before Dean could continue or Edward could retort Bella stepped in again with her own words letting herself lean into Dean knowing she was going to need his support to get through this part. "Hunting is my life Edward. It is part of who I am and I don't want to leave it to go with you. I am sorry. I never meant for all this to happen… And I don't really know how to really say this…" Dean's squeezed Bella's shoulder making Edward growl. "It's over between us Edward… It never would have worked… I realize that now…"
There was a look of complete disbelief on Edward's face as he looked at Bella. "No!" He shook his head. "If this is some sort of joke, love, I am sorry, but I am not laughing."
Bella rolled her eyes and tried to keep her calm the best way she could. "This isn't a joke, Edward. There is still so much you don't understand." She watched as he had taken a couple of steps toward her making her almost feel trapped between him and Dean. "The reason I came to Forks is actually a lot different than you know. I had suppressed the true reason out of my mind because of how it hurt and the answer I gave you at the time I thought was the truth. But now that I remember the things that I should I don't want to lead you on or hurt you, but I can't keep lying to myself. I love Dean, Edward. I have for a long time and despite the fact I thought I loved you it isn't the type of love that I feel for Dean."
There was no doubt by the look on Edward's face that he didn't believe that Bella was truly breaking up with him as he took another few steps forward to the point where he almost in Bella's face. In reaction to the vampire getting so close to Bella Dean wrapped one of his arms around Bella's waist protectively and glared at the pale vampire threateningly to make him back off. "Bella," Edward said pleadingly, "I don't know what these people did to you to make you turn against me but I know those words aren't yours. I know you love me, Bella. I can get you away from them. All you have to do is trust me…"
"Honestly, Edward…" This time Bella's voice had lost all calm, her temper starting to show. "Here I am trying to be nice and let you down gently, but if you are going to go into denial it is not going to make things easier at all." Her normal chocolate brown eyes were swirling with anger. "You could never be more than a friend to me. I tried to love you even when I regained my memories, but seeing Dean only reaffirmed that I want only him."
It was becoming quite clear that Edward was having a hard time dealing with Bella's words and though she was truly trying to be gentle and kind as she could it wasn't enough for him. Edward was use to having a dazzling effect on her that now and that it seemed to no longer be working the vampire was completely thrown for a loop. He was feeling threatened by this male that wanted to take his mate away. "Bella-" He growled lowly. "You are letting these people manipulate you. I think it is time you come home." Edward looked pained for a moment. "I will turn you if that is why you are pushing away from me now."
There was a look of surprise and then a scared look that came across her face as Dean let out a snarl in response to Edwards's words while pulling her closer to him. "I don't want that, Edward. At one time I thought I wanted that from you, but I always realized in some way that it wasn't right. I am sorry Edward." There was a sad look on her face and she looked tired of talking.
Before the vampire could speak Dean looked down at Bella and then pushed her toward Charlie's front door. "Go on Bella. I think that is enough for today." His eyes met Charlie's as the older male stepped out along with Bobby. "Go on to your Dad and Bobby. Let me talk to Mr. Cullen for awhile." Dean didn't bother watching Bella walk toward the house, but her heard the door slam as Charlie, Bobby, and Bella disappeared into the safety of the living room. "Alright, Cullen," Dean hissed out to Edward. "Stop stressing her out. Just because you're in denial that she don't want you anymore doesn't mean you can harass her." He crossed his arms as he gave the vampire his famous death glare. "She tried her best to be honest with you and let you down easy out of respect, but you refuse to listen to what she wan-"
"I love Bella and I want the best for her." Edward cut off Dean's words. "And I don't see how letting her run all over the country chasing creature and spirits around is the best for her!" Edward was furies that this human male thought he knew what was better for Bella. "She deserves better than to end up as a snack for some sort of evil thing. All of you are bad influences on her. My poor sweet Bella growing up like this…"
Dean snorted and rolled his eyes. "Poor Bella- You are talking like she is made of glass. The girl we call Hells Bells made of glass… That is hilarious." He threw the rag that had been in his other hand toward the impala. "And you have no idea what is best for Bella or what she wants. You want to turn her into a creature that eventually hunters will gun to take out. Most hunters don't care about if you don't feed on humans or not. To them if you are a creature you have to die. She don't want that fate and I won't let you make her a target for hunters." The green eyed hunter was starting to become furious with the vampire and he itched to find out if dead man's blood worked on him. "You heard her say that she loves me and I am the possessive type, vampire." There was a dark look in Dean's eyes that proved just what he was saying.
Edward raised one eyebrow as he looked at Dean not seeming to be effected by Dean's change in demeanor. "You're possessive of her yet you can't even say you love her?" The copperhead male looked a little pleased at this. "How could she say she loves you when your mind and mouth seem like an x-rated movie?"
"I don't have to say it. I am not much for mushy gooey moments. She knows how I feel." The hunter moved slowly until he was leaning against his car. "A-www, does the vampire not like my thoughts?" Dean smirked and spoke again after a moment. "I was doing all that for your entertainment, vamp."
"Really?" Edward replied giving Dean a reproachable look. "You really want me to believe all those images were just for my benefit. I have seen your type many times before through the years. Womanizers like you shouldn't even be allowed in Bella's presence."
The words being exchanged by the two were being watched by two very curious observers known as Sam and Jasmine. "Does the vampire know that getting Dean this angry is going to only make things worse on him?"
Jasmine had a pleased smile at Sam's words. "Yeah, that look on Dean's face usually means that someone is about to become headless. Wanna take bets?"
The younger Winchester male let out a chuckle in response and shook his head. "Quite true. Dean looks ready to spit fire." He remarked letting the curtain he was holding up so they could see slip back into place.
"Idjits!" Bobby muttered from behind them.
"I still want to videotape this…" Jasmine commented ignoring her father's words almost looking like a little kid in a toy store. It showed how much watching a vampire get told off by her older brother figure amused her. Only if she could hear what was being said.
"And creature like you shouldn't even exist, but unfortunately you do." Dean didn't bother to defend the comments about him being a womanizer. He had a past, a past which Bella already knew of unless through all the years of knowing him she had stuck her head down a hole like an ostrich. "And now I am getting tired of talking to you. She told you that it was over and she tried to explain to you why. Now, if you are the gentleman that she claims that you are suppose to act like you will go back to your family vamp and leave her alone."
Edward made to look like he was going, but there was something about the way that he glanced at Dean that had the hunter on edge. "I will go for now. But I won't leave my precious Bella in the hands of a pig. I don't know what you did to her to change her, but I will get my Bella back. This won't be the last time we meet."
The hunter knew that getting rid of the vampire wouldn't be easy, but it didn't mean that this couldn't be fun for him. "I will be waiting for your return." He paused for a moment. "And by the way, no more slipping through Bella's bedroom window. Jasmine is sharing the room with Bella and waking her in the middle of the night… Might as well make your own funeral arrangements…" Dean watched as Edward left in the Volvo of his before turning to go into the house. The last of his control slipping as he slammed the door.
It took Bella and Sam a couple of hours for them to get Dean's temper under control between the two of them. Bella listened to him scream about over privileged living dead and how he just wanted to torch Edward and get the whole thing over with. The brunette was quite shocked at how Edward had acted toward Dean and at her as well which meant whatever next meeting between them wouldn't be as pleasant. She had half a mind to call Jake for a favor, but having Jake meet Dean right now didn't seem like a very good idea. Dean's temper didn't burn out with his words though and so Sam had ended up training with his older brother in the backyard.
Afterwards Dean's attitude improved quite well, but Sam knew he was going to have some bruises from their fight. It was worth it though and a lot healthier than him trying to go and take a nest of vampires at the moment. Charlie and Bobby were also not pleased at the turn of events with Edward refusing to let go and were discussing what might have to go down in order to protect their little family and keep it intact.
It was only when Dean had finally calmed down that the three noticed that Jasmine was missing. "Hey, where did Jazzie go?" Dean asked stretching as he settled himself in a kitchen chair. Bobby explained to the three that him and Charlie sent Jasmine on a food run and that she would be back with food that they could throw on the grill to cook. So now the crew was just waiting for one person to return so they could actually hopefully relax for the evening.

While Dean had been venting to Bella and Sam Jasmine had done what her father asked and took her mustang to go to the supermarket. She had to admit on her drive over there that despite the vampire and shape shifter problem that it seemed like a sweet small little town. She could see why her Uncle Charlie never really wanted to leave the area. It may have rained too much in the area and been too green for Bella's taste most of the time, but Jasmine thought it had a certain appeal. Though she couldn't honestly put a finger out exactly what it was that made Jasmine like the area so much.
She found the place easily enough and she parked her car in front of the store in one of the first rows of the parking lot. Getting out she noticed a beautiful dark haired woman standing at the corner of the building and she nodded in direction as she passed her. It didn't take long for Jasmine to get the list of things that her father and Uncle Charlie asked for as the store didn't seem to have much business at the moment. She ignored the cashier that was trying to flirt with her especially when he was so bad at it to take her shopping bags full of food back to the car. Along the way past the corner of the building she noticed that the woman from before was gone and figured that the female had gotten into her own vehicle and left.
Jasmine popped the trunk and dropped the bags inside making sure the trunk was closed tight before she turned around only to come face to face with the woman from earlier. "Can I help you with something?" Jasmine asked her one hand reaching into her jean jacket pocket for the knife she always had there. She didn't have time to grab it though as she saw the woman's eyes flash black and she was suddenly invisibly pinned to her car.
"Don't you remember me Jasmine? I would feel so upset if you didn't…" The woman Jasmine now identified as a demon pouted at her. "Then again, the last time we met I did have a different meat suit…"
"It doesn't matter to me who you are demon scum. Let me go!" She let out a hiss of pain as the demon pressed harder. Jasmine hated the fact that the parking lot was empty but to anyone looking it didn't look like anything was going on between the two.
"Now, now… Jasmine, is that anyway to treat an old friend? After all I did try and help get the oldest Winchester out of his deal…"
"Ruby!" Jasmine struggled more against the invisible force holding her only to stop and have to gasp for air. She like Dean had never really trusted the demon, but Sam and even Bella was convinced that the hell bitch was actually trying to help. Jasmine liked to think it was because the other two especially Sam was so adamant about getting Dean out of his deal. Not that Jasmine hadn't wanted Dean out of the deal, but she had other ways of dealing with her problems than working with demons. "What do I owe this pleasure?"
She flinched as the other female approached her and ran her hand across Jasmine's cheek a moment. "I just wanted to see how all of you were faring now than Dean is out of hell. I figured that I wouldn't get a very warm welcome showing up at the Chief's place… And I just wanted to talk to you."
Jasmine wanted to snort hearing about how Ruby thought that she wouldn't get a very warm welcome because the demon was right. She wouldn't have made it far before one of them had taken her out of her meat suit. "So you wanted to talk to me? What gives me that honor instead of Sam?"
There was a look of dark intent on Ruby's face as she considered Jasmine's questions. "Well, you see…" The demon let out a chuckle. "Sam is the reason that I am here." Jasmine struggled in Ruby's grasp again, her violet- blue eyes flashing angrily. "Don't be like that, Singer. I don't mean him any harm. I just wanted to know how he was doing with having his brother back."
"What does it matter to black eyed asses like you?" Jasmine had to bite back crying out in pain as felt like her lungs were being squeezed and she couldn't breathe. Her body wriggled and squirmed but it seemed that Ruby's power wasn't going to relent any time soon.
"You must stop interrupting me, Ms. Singer. I thought your father taught you better manners than that." Ruby hissed in Jasmine's face before she leaned forward until her mouth was almost against Jasmine's ear. "But there is something that you should know… I thought you should know what happened to Sam after he left the safety of your salvage yard and before he and his brother started hunting together again." Whatever it was Ruby must have found it amusing because it laced her tone. "He was so upset that he couldn't stop Dean's deal and he wants vengeance against Lilith so much. And I have been helping him. So you can imagine just what the two of us have been doing together…" She pulled back to see the disbelief on Jasmine's face.
"You're lying! Demons lie!" Jasmine responded with a jerk still unable to move. "I don't believe you!"
Ruby shook her head. "Oh, Jasmine. You have so much to learn. I hate to tell you this, but I don't think Sam thinks of you in the same way anymore as you think of him." She leaned forward and whispered into Jasmine's ear again. "He is mine now. You lose…"
Then the demon left and the power pinning Jasmine to her mustang released and the purple spiked haired girl slid to the ground in shock. She had always been told that demons lied and that she shouldn't listen to what they, but Ruby had already done the damage that she wanted. There was a seed of doubt pressed into Jasmine's mind now and the young woman was wondering if she had truly lost Sam to the demon or if Ruby just liked screwing with her head. Jasmine drove back to the Swan's house in a daze unable to truly focus. Had she just met her rival for Sam?
AN2: I hope you like this chapter. Ruby has made her appearance and the fight with Edward over Bella is starting. But there is still Alice's secret and other twists to be revealed. Some much sooner than others.
