Jane and Riley are hanging off a building.

Boston Dark Knight Returns: Volume II: Chapter Four

"I don't wanna die!" Riley screamed as she swung off the ledge of the building. Only being held up by a stranger's hands.

"You're not gonna die" Batman replied calmly, despite the muscle in her arm begging to let go of the building ledge. Supporting herself and Detective Riley wasn't as easy as she thought. Ok, how am I gonna get out of this one? If Riley could use me as as I kind of ladder, she could probably reach that balcony above.

"Riley, I need you to listen really carefully. Ok?" Batman spoke calmly, if she shouted Riley may panic even more.

"Ok!" Riley replied, although her reply was not filled with much confidence.

"I need you to try and reach that balcony above, can you see it?"

Riley craned her neck and looked above. "Uhuh!"

"Good, now I'm gonna pull you up a bit and I want to put your foot on my belt, and push yourself up."

"What?! That's crazy! I can't do that!" Riley exclaimed.

"Yes you can! Ok, one... two… three!" With all of Jane's strength, she heaved her right arm up. She winced as Riley's high heels scraped against parts of her armour. Once Riley had her own grip on the wall, Jane swung her arm onto another piece of architecture of the building, sharing the load of her body mass.

Batman watched in suspense as detective Riley slowly made it to the balcony.

"Ok, I made it, how are you-" Riley stopped as when she looked down the batman was no longer anywhere to be seen. "Oh okay… Erm… thanks…" Riley said to empty air.

"Come over here, I need to tell you something" A man said in the corner of an alley. The woman who the man was speaking to continued to walk faster, until the man grabbed her hand with an iron grip.
"I said come here!" The man spoke through gritted teeth.

"Let go of me, you creep!" The woman tried to yank her hand away as her handbag fell to floor, but it was no use. The man was almost two feet taller than her. Without any more hesitation, the woman swung a hard kick between the man's legs. The man soon collapsed onto the floor, in which the woman made a bolt for it. Her high heels clicking away.

She never stopped running, her lungs ached, her calves burned, her heart pounded. But she didn't stop.

Eventually she reached her home front door. Fumbling round for the keys, she slammed them into the lock and twisted, jumping into the hallway and slammed the front door.

There was silence.

The woman let her head rest on the door for a few minutes. She then sunk to the floor.

"That was very impressive."

The woman screamed, at the sudden intruder. But stopped, as she slowly recognised the infamous logo that had become known to Boston.

"Batman." She breathed out.

"You left this behind." Batman held out a black leather handbag. "It's probably worth a lot. Prada, is it?"

"Yeah… how did you know?"

"My friend has one." Batman states simply. Emotionless. The thought of Maura causes Jane to feel a little bit empty. "You helped take down a rapist, well done."

"Did you…" the woman trailed off.

"No, but he's being pulled away by some fine officers at this moment."

"Good…" the woman spoke… "So…. Can I help you?"

There was a long pause. Suddenly the woman watched as batman smiled. Only with that smile, did she realise batman's feminine features.

"Nope"

With that, Batman walked out her front door.

Jane slumped into the chair in the room, at the computer. Waiting for Korsak to come back from his day of work. Taking the mask off of her head, Jane placed it onto desk and stared at it.

I loved that feeling of knowing I made someone's life a bit safer. If Frost makes Maura safe, then I guess, as batman I should be happy… But what about Jane Rizzoli?

"Jane?!" Korsak called out desperately. Something was definitely wrong.

"Korsak? What's wrong?"

"It's Frost and Maura. The Joker's kidnapped them!"

Jane felt a lump form in her throat.

"Korsak, I need you to try and get a location ASAP." Jane grabbed her mask, and went out the window.

Maura… please be safe…

Maura felt someone slap her face slightly. "Doctor Isles!" A woman shouted. Maura slowly stirred awake. In front of her was a woman, she had greasy green hair, white powered face, and red lipstick. Two very unattractive scars on the woman's face, one came from each end of her lips. As if she was a clown. Or a…

"Joker." She breathed out.

"That's right! Isn't she a smart one, eh fellas?"

"Maura? Are you ok?" Maura heard Frost's voice further away, but she couldn't pin point where.

"Yes, I'm fine, where are you!?"

"Little Frosty is in his happy place doctor Isles. You know what they say, you should never wake a sleep walker." The joker let out a cackle.

"Now doctor isles. From what I heard, you had a very isolated life. How many loved ones do you have?"

"What has this got to do with-" Maura felt a blow to the stomach. "Several."

"Nice, I like her." The joker replied with a grin. "Now what if we were to reduce that several… to a few… then a couple… then one… how desperate would you become before you snapped? Before something in that big ol' logical brain of yours… just went." The Joker exaggerated the idea with his hands.

"I don't know what I'd do." Maura admitted.

"Exactly, we don't know what we would do. Until it happens. Take me for example. My mother… god bless her soul… she took me and my little brother up to the park. She told us that daddy was gone. For good. Which was fine with us, he was a complete waste of time. But then mama was taken away too. Turns out the police found out she'd killed papa… and papa's friends had killed her. Now me and my little brother were stuck here with no money or food. We ran away from the system. So I still had him. But then one day… he got very sick… so sick that he asked me… to kill him. And you know what?"

"What?" Maura asked, her voice full of fear.

The joker leaned next to Maura's ear, inhaling the scent of the doctor.

She whispered ever so quietly, that it gave Maura Goosebumps.

"I did it."
