Chapter Twenty Three

Previously…
"What the fuck was that." She muttered, her eyes opened with confused curiosity. The corner of her mouth twitched apathetically upwards as she slowly backed away from the accursed door.
~oOo~
Dawn furiously headed back into her room and grabbed her backpack. She made sure she had her wallet and pokegear with her as well.
"I should write a note to Reggie to let him know that I'll be out…" She mumbled to herself. She quickly changed into something more comfortable for the weather. Questions and anger roared throughout her head as she replayed the conversation she had with Paul a few minutes ago. She was wrong to have thought that Paul would have changed when he apologized to her. She was completely and utterly wrong and wish she hadn't hoped for a better outcome.
"That fucking prick is one hell of a jerk… What did that girl even see in him anyways?" She ranted under her breath.
She slowly lost herself in her own thoughts as she created different scenarios on how she should have reacted to his insults. She should have yelled back. She should have fought back. She should have sassed him back. She should have done something instead of standing in front of him and gaped as he spewed out word after word. Dawn stopped gripping the straps of her bag with a tight grip as she slumped. Her shoulders dropped as she released a string of air from her mouth. She knew it was impossible to go back in time to change the outcome of the conversation. And she knew it was even more impossible to confront Paul about it again. He would merely reply back with something harsher. Dawn really had wondered how a guy like Paul was able to have had a relationship with a girl like Salvia. Granted, she knew nothing about Salvia, but just from the way she looked in all those pictures she saw on Paul's profile made her question their past relationship even more. Had Paul became insensitive and mean because of the break up? Or was he always like that from the very start? Maybe his ex girlfriend had changed him. Made him less of a jerk.
"Why am I even thinking about something stupid like this?" Dawn wondered. Her eyes glossed upwards. She knew Paul was right. It was in no way her business what happened between Paul and his ex. She was just an outsider. She had no say in anything. The problem was how the situation continued to overthrow most of her rational thoughts out the window. Everything and anything related to Paul had stuck in her head. From their first meeting to now. She wasn't sure what her subconscious was trying to tell her. All she knew was that Paul somehow ended up in her mind. It was strange, honestly, to have someone one dislike to have been popping up all over in one's mind.
"This is stupid… Why should I even care what he does? His life doesn't concern me at all, and it's not affecting my life either. Why should I wrack my brain over something stupid like this? It's his life, he can do whatever the fuck he wants to do, and I can do whatever the fuck I want to do." She said firmly.
Dawn checked the time on her pokegear and frowned. No new message from May. Were they even coming? Maybe some last minute changes happened and they've decided not to go shopping, neglecting to message her about the plans. Dawn mulled over every possibilities in her head. All the thoughts of Paul had cramped up her mind a lot, but now with an added worry from her new friends, it became way too much for her. Her palms felt clammy, and her heart began to race. She wanted to stay home, in her home. She wanted to curl up in her chair and talk to Barry. She wanted to go back to Twinleaf Town. She wanted to go to school with her friends back in Twinleaf. She didn't want to be here. She never even wanted to come here in the first place. Dawn wanted to stay in Twinleaf, she begged her mom for arrangements to stay at a friends place. But her mother didn't have any of that. Dawn wished she had never came here. She wished she had never met Paul, because then things like before would have never happened.
Ring. Ring. Ring.
"Eh?" She snapped out of her negativity and checked who was calling her. A glimmer of hope surged through her entire body as she saw May's name on the caller ID.
"H-hello?" She answered quickly.
"Hello? Dawn? It's May! We're here to pick you up! So come down here already so we can go on a SHOPPING SPREE!" The brunette answered loudly.
A relieved giggle escaped Dawn's lips as she heard May's booming voice.
"Yeah sure! I'll be down in a few!" She responded. The call ended and she quickly gathered her things before she left the house. She contemplated whether she should tell Paul she was leaving now, but she figured that their conversation may end up like how it was last time.
"I'll just write a note to Reggie." She thought again. Dawn nabbed a pen and paper and scribbled the words down. It was somewhat legible to read, though she would assume Reggie would understand what she meant. With an approved grin, Dawn bolted out the door and beamed up towards her friends.
"Hey there, Dawnie! Glad you could join us for a ride!" Leaf chattered.
"Afternoon, Dawn!" Misty greeted.
"Took you long enough!" May laughed.
"Hey there everyone!" Dawn exclaimed. She carefully made her way down to the car and hopped into the backseat with May.
"Remember to put on your seatbelt, folks." Leaf reminded.
"Don't worry, mom." May teased.
Dawn revelled in the wondrous feeling of friends and being able to be around people that actually cares about others. But there was still that nagging feeling in her head that wondered about Paul. She had noticed that he had always spent his time alone. It didn't seem like he had any friends at all. Did that meant his only friend was Salvia, his ex? It wasn't that quite of a shock, but it just seemed lonely to lose that very friend.
Throughout the car ride, Dawn couldn't help but continue thinking about Paul. What was he doing now? Was he still lonely? She shook her head. Of course he wasn't lonely, he still talks to Salvia. They still converse with one another, even if they had broken up. And it was perfectly common for people who had broken up with one another to still talk to each other. Though she also had to wonder how that made Paul feel. In those pictures, he was smiling. He was actually genuinely smiling whilst he was with her. But now all she ever saw on his face was a scowl or a bored smirk.
"Dawn?"
"E-eh?" She was startled as May shook her arm.
"Are you okay Dawn?" Misty asked.
"Y-yeah! I'm fine! I'm totally fine! No need to worry!" She said quickly.
The other three girls laughed and they resumed back to what they had been doing previously. Dawn slouched back into her seat and she thought about everything that happened when she first transferred to Veilstone Academy. Then it suddenly clicked.
"Gary!" Dawn gasped loudly, unaware of where she was right now.
"What about Gary?" Asked Misty.
'OH SHIT! I forgot I was with them right now! Uhh, time to make something up...' She thought as she slowly took her hands off of her mouth, something she had done right after Misty had asked the question.
"Uh, no, I just, remembered something Gary said that one time you know?" She said, trying to salvage herself from any more embarrassment.
Leaf chuckled. "Whatever you say, weirdo."
How could she had Paul on her mind when she was dating Gary? She was not acting like a very good girlfriend to Gary right now.
"Hey Dawn, what do you want to do first when we reach the mall? Grab something to drink at the food court or start shopping for stuff?" May questioned.
"Eh? Oh uh, I'm okay with whatever!" She replied with a smile.
"Then let's grab something to drink, I'm fucking parched!" Leaf cried out. They turned into the underground parkade of the mall and swerved around until they found a great parking spot. The girls each exited the car and made their way over to the elevators to start their mall adventure.
"Dawn, how's everything with you and Gary?" Misty asked as they waited for the elevator to reach their floor.
"Eh!?" She was startled by such a question. Her face hot with nervousness as she tried to compile a set of convincing answers to say to Misty and the others.
"C'mon Mist, can't you see Dawnie is feeling nervous about a question about Oak?" Leaf said playfully as she wrapped an arm around Dawn. The taller girl leaned downwards so she was remotely the same height as the blue-haired girl.
"E-eh?" Was all Dawn could throw out.
"I noticed that you say 'eh' a lot, is that your favourite word or something?" May teased.
"E - no, it just seems like today is just an 'eh' day? Ha ha, anyways, I'm thirsty! Where's the food court?" Dawn asked as she desperately changed the subject.
"The food court should be on the fifth floor." Misty replied. Dawn nodded in thanks and the four of them entered the elevator with ease.
The ride up to the fifth floor was silent and unbearable for Dawn. The silent made her mind wander back to Paul, and as much as she hated thinking about a guy like him, she still couldn't help but wonder about him. They had made each other out to be enemies on the first day she transferred to the school. And all the hatred just piled up and up, she barely even knows the guy - granted she also barely knows her new friends as well, but they were a lot easier to talk to and hang around with than Paul.
As she continued to think about Paul, she wondered if he was acting like a douche was because he no longer got to see his ex, who had possibly made him act like a decent human being. She wondered if she were to hang around Paul, would he slowly open himself a bit more? Would he stop acting so mean to her?
She shook her head furiously.
'That's so stupid! Why would I even want to hang out with a downer like him!?' She thought to herself.
However, if the reason he was acting rude was because the person he loved was no longer with him, then she wondered what would happen if he found someone else that he would love more than Salvia. She thought of all the possibilities of which girl would get along well with Paul.
Misty has Ash, so that's a no-go at all. And it seemed like May and Drew has a thing going on, but from what she remembered, May had a crush on Brendan. May probably wouldn't even last two seconds with Paul in her honest opinion. Then there's Leaf. She seemed okay, it seemed like Leaf would put up a much better fight with Paul than the other two girls.
Suddenly the option of her being with Paul popped into her mind. Dawn stopped in her tracks and muttered an inaudible scream. She shouldn't be thinking about a possible relationship with a bully like Paul. She had Gary for crying out loud. Her timid fingers found their way through the locks of her hair as she gripped them tightly. Her eyes widen with sudden horror at what her mind had flashed before her in that brief three seconds. She didn't want that in her mind, it was bad enough that she couldn't stop herself from thinking about Paul the entire afternoon, but now her mind wanted to show her the possibility of having a relationship with him?
"What's wrong, Dawn?" Misty backtracked in her footsteps and placed a calming hand on Dawn's back.
"N-nothing… I just… I just thought of something scary and kinda freaked myself out a bit. No need to worry!"

A/N: SURPRISE THOUGHT YOU'D SEEN THE LAST OF ME probably I don't know anyways, last chapter was lacking in the Ikarishipping love so I thought I'd pull a double-update whammy on you guys. Made this chapter much more centered around Dawn and Paul - or at least Dawn thinking about Paul. Sorry it's short though, but anyways, I hope you enjoyed today's double-update~!
