Chapter 4
Clary POV
I groaned. The plan didn't involve getting ambushed by Shadowhunters while conducting our own ambush. The Praetor Lupus was not going to be impressed with the way our mission failed spectacularly. The rebel group is called the Praetor Lupus not because we are actually 'wolf guardians' but because we act and plan as a 'pack' just like wolves, and our duty is to be guardians to those who need us most, out of the Downworlder and Mundane population.
Our plan was to rescue the two Downworlders that had been rumoured to have got lost on the mountains near Sparta while collecting Herbs and Fruits for the Verlac household. Magnus Bane and Ragnor Fell weren't to hard to find, all you had to do was follow the sound of loud banter and friendly insults, and to bring them back to the rebel HQ. Our plan didn't involve two stuck up Shadowhunters who get off on violence and killing anything that so much as moves. Luke and my mum are going to have my head for this. That's if it's still attached once we manage to breakout of the Silent City. If we manage to, that is.
If only we had followed Maia's plan of get in and out as quick as possible to not attract attention, but no Jordan just had to show off to Maia and try to take down the Shadowhunters by himself, resulting in him tripping and landing on his face. Raphael then had to pick up the pieces by knocking the Shadowhunters out before they showed just how badass their moves are. As much as I love Simon he's not much of a fighter, I swear at one point he made a high pitched noise that sounded like a little girl who had just had her hair ripped off. On that note, where is Simon.
Upon opening my eyes I saw, nothing. Nothing, but the endless darkness that had cocooned itself around my body. All of us who live in or around Sparta have been raised in darkness maybe not as much as the Shadowhunters or the purebred Spartans but even when I was a child just like everyone else I was locked in a dark room with no light visible to 'cure' my fear of the dark. It was never this dark though. Nowhere near. This is the type of dark where the nightmares live, the place you never escape from.
Alec's POV
I nervously glanced at the doorway for what seemed like the 100th time in the last two minuets. Both I and Jace had recovered nicely from the run in with the Downworlders who had ambushed us, two days ago. I know that I should have been concerned for my Parabatai when I had woken up completely but my mind couldn't stop thinking about Magnus and those beautiful gold green eyes that had stared into my soul and paralysed my mind when he had looked at me.
"ALEC!" I jumped so high that I fell of the chair I had been nervously perched on for the last few hours. I stared up dazed at Izzy who had an annoyed look on her face, and Jace who had an eyebrow raised and his signature smirk on his face. My hand twitched itching to slap that smug smirk off his face, or even better punch it off. Punching leaves more of a mark, I mused. While I deliberated this in my head I slowly got off the floor and focused on Izzy so I couldn't see Jace and that smirk of his.
"So, those bastards that dared attack you have been chucked into the Silent City as you know, we have to give testimonies of what went down." Izzy said trying to be serious but the grin that was threatening to break out across her face gave her excitement away.
Why was she so excited? Me, I was scared shitless that I was going to breakdown as soon as I saw Magnus. But then Izzy doesn't know that. She can't ever know that.
"When do we have to do this?" I asked Izzy, still refusing to even acknowledge Jace's existence.
"Tonight" Izzy said as she then proceeded to jump up and down like a little kid who had just received their first ever weapon.
"I'll meet you at the gates" I told them as I turned and made my way towards my bedroom, completely Ignoring Jace calling my name after me.
Tonight wasn't going to go well. That's for sure.
Magnus POV
I know where I am, the Silent City, residence of the Silent Brothers. People go insane down here, and I'm starting to realise why.
It started off silent. Then the screams started, not just any screams but those of my mother. Every so often her screams would come for me through the darkness engulfing me in the pain that were carried in the screams echoing around me. Not only that but after I had cried myself to sleep the nightmares that my dreams supplied were heartbreaking.
I stood in a meadow of red poppies. Nearby a lake shone in the afternoon sun. I spun in a circle and let out a chuckle. This scene was just how my mother had described her childhood. Free from the Spartans. I started walking over to the lake and peered into the glimmering water, there I saw my reflection grinning back at me. I was about to step away from the lakes edge when I saw another reflection just to my left. Spinning around as quickly as I could to my left, I came face to face with my mum. Her black shoulder-length hair framed her face just as I remembered it and her brown eyes swam with kindness and love just as they always did. She smiled and reached out her had for me to take as I stretched my arm out for her to take my hand I saw something flash in the depths of her eyes, but it was gone just as quickly as it had appeared
As soon as our hand touched pain flooded through me faster and more deadly than a tsunami. I screamed as around me the poppies were merging to create bloodied corpses of Downworlders and mundanes some that I know well but also others that I have only seen in passing. My gaze fell onto the broken and bloody body of Ragnor and gasped tears spilling down my face making my vision red tinted. Through the pain of both seeing Ragnor and the searing pain that came when I touched my mothers hand my brain shut down and my body reacted on the flight and fight reflex
My whole body surged backwards and into the lake, the sudden movement tore my hand out of my mother's tight grip. My legs below the knee felt suddenly really, warm looking down I saw why. The beautiful glistening blue of the lake had been replaced by blood. Not just any blood but the blood that was still warm as if it had just been removed from numerous living human bodies to create a lake of heated blood. My whole body started trembling and my knees collapsed underneath me making my body fall into the lake of blood, luckily or as lucky as I can be in an situation like this, my head was still above the lake.
The blood had started to burn my skin, when I heard a beautiful rich voice calling me from a about a meter away from me. I slowly lifted my head to be met with the blue eyes that I saw every time I closed my eyes. Alec my beautiful Alexander. The concern in his eyes was evident as he stared at me intensely. I suddenly felt the urge to jump up and hug him so I did, completely ignoring the burning of the blood on my skin and the blood that covered most of my body I stood up and staggered over to Alec. I let him wrap me up in his strong arms resting my head on his shoulder as he whispered comforting words to me and rubbed my back in a soothing manner. Lifting my head off his shoulder I looked down and into his eyes he smiled his adorable smile and I just could resist the urge to bend down and place a chaste kiss on his lips. Just as our lips were about to touch I removed my eyes from there gaze on Alec plump pink lips to look into his blu-deep indentations where there should have be eyes, wait what 'should have been eyes'. I jerked away as a laugh started to resound in my head. Looking at Alec-but not Alec I saw a pale white face, way to pale even for Alec that was littered with the tattoos of the most elite Spartans, the Silent Brothers, his head was shaved which greatly resembled an egg, his mouth was sewn up. Defiantly not Alec.
With a cry I was shoved backwards back into the lake of blood and shoved under the blood, now no longer being able to breath I slipped into the endless darkness.
My eyes snapped open, and I became aware of how heavily I was breathing. I vaguely noticed that I could see as when I had been awake before it was way to dark see anything at all. Magnus. Echoed through my head in a creepy patronising voice. Look up boy. You are to be questioned by the Shadowhunters who brought you in and the Kings of Sparta. Arise and follow me. The same voice said. Looking up I saw the same person from my dream, speechless I stood following the Silent Brother as he glided out of what I could see of my cell and down a long corridor that had a steep and narrow staircase. Which he motioned for me to climb up first. I walked up the stair slowly but soon speed up for some unknown reason. I hadn't told my feet to move any faster they just did.
When I reached the top of the stairs I was now standing in a huge underground chamber littered around the edge with fire torches. At what I assumed was the front of the chamber were seated two chairs, not overly fancy but they had the symbol of Sparta the letter lambda (Λ) as he back of the chairs, this represented the whole of Sparta but the Kings in particular. Set in a semi circle a few meters in front of the chairs/thrones. As I stood by the stairs people or more like Spartans had started to trickle into the chamber. Only a few, most likely the most elite of the Spartans.
My feet started moving as if they had a mind of there own. I came to a halt a few feet away from the chairs/thrones and spotted Ragnor who was approaching but from what seemed to be a different staircase. He smiled weakly at me. He looked like shit with dark bags under his skin and he looked really green, so much more so than normal. I returned his smile just as weakly. I felt not just physically exhausted but mentally frazzled too, more than I have ever been in my whole life. And that's saying a lot considering I've been a slave my whole life.
On my other side I saw the green eyed red haired girl from the mountain ambush and a scrawny brown haired boy who had glasses, mundane made obviously crated in the ways only they knew how. They were also accompanied by male with long, dark hair that tumbled over his forehead and down his neck in curls with long thick eye lashes, he had broad-shoulders and slim but muscular with high check bones and hazel-green eyes. Next to him stood a curvy biracial teenager with light brown skin and dark brown eyes. Looking back to Ragnor I spotted another person standing beside him. A boy of about 15/16 with dark black curly hair, thin eyebrows and honey-coloured skin. We all had one thing in common, we looked like we felt. Shit absolute shit.
A loud laugh echoed through the chamber turning around I saw Blondie otherwise known as Alec stealer was sighted walking towards us at the front. Although, he wasn't who caught my attention, no it was Alec. He was listening to whatever Blondie was saying, when suddenly he looked right at me, I froze I was scared of what I would see in those striking blue eyes. But I didn't see disgust or hostility in those oceanic depths, I saw instead guilt and regret in his gaze. I tried to smile at him but it came out as more of a grimace, which I realised as the guilt in Alec's eyes got even bigger.
No matter how this 'Trial' goes and it won't be good, at least I know that Alec recognised me.
That's all that matters at the moment.
