Chapter 5: Fathers and Bands

Lily's P.O.V.

"Daddy!" I screamed as my father hit the floor. Both Krystal and Michelle gasped and the moms all screamed out my father's name and swam over to get closer to him. The screaming seemed to have an effect on the other two fathers who came out of their daze and bent down to try to wake up my dad. I held on to my friends' hands tighter, tears rolling down my cheeks as I took the sight in front of me. Krystal and Michelle were trying to calm me down and saying soothing words, but they seemed far away. Everything was moving in slow motion, Uncle Ash holding my dad's head in his lap as Uncle Zane slapped him gently, but my father remained unconscious. My mother said something to Aunt Emma, but I couldn't understand it. Next thing I knew, both of them were using their powers and directed a jet of water to my dad's face, who sat up gasping and shivering seconds after the water hit his face.

"Are you okay Lewis? Mother asked him carefully.

"Yes I'm alright. You I had the strangest dream that the girls were here and they had tails..." he trailed off as he looked at me again, he seemed to go pale again, but didn't pass out. "That wasn't a dream, was it?" The six of us shook our heads no as the younger ones looked down to the water, unable to face their fathers.

"How did this happen? When?" Uncle Ash question as he pulled Aunt Emma out of the water. Uncle Zane doing the same with Aunt Rikki and father got my mother out of the water with the help of Uncle Zane. Only the three of us remained in the water, but made no move to get out. The tension was so thick a knife could cut right through it. Finally after what seemed like forever, Krystal sighed and began explaining what happened. The fathers all listened carefully, only interrupting Krystal when she talked about how we left the house in the middle of the night on the Zodiac. When she finished the three of us looked at our fathers, expecting anger and disappointment, but instead we were greeted with smiles and seconds later our fathers jumped in the moon and hugged us. During their jump they didn't realized they had splashed our already dry mothers, which left them no option but to dive into the moon pool and join the family hug.

"Wait, I'm confused. You're not mad? I broke the three rules all in one night and I get a hug" Krystal questioned her father, who only laughed at her before explaining.

"Well sweetie, I should be mad, but actually I'm quite proud of you. I mean you two parent who were rule breakers back in the day, it's only natural for you to be one as well. If I grounded you I would be a hypocrite, because I did way worse back in the day. Unless you want me to ground you?" the last part was a question, which she quickly answered with a no smiling slightly at her dad. The other parents agreed with Uncle Zane's statement, which meant that my friends and I wouldn't get grounded. We laughed and talked for a good twenty minutes, the moon pool being too small for us nine but we didn't care.

"Well girls now comes the fun part. Powers! There was a lot of "seriously Rikki" comments but she just shrugged and asked all of us to step out of the moon pool. After we were all dry Aunt Emma took Michelle and faced her towards the moon pool, right in the center. She showed her a hand motion and soon the moon pool water was covered in ice, which disappeared a few seconds later thanks to Aunt Rikki. Michelle made the same hand motion as her mother, covering the entire moon pool with ice and the cave with snow.

"Was that supposed to happen?" I asked my mother who shook her head no, clearly shocked like the rest of the adults. Aunt Rikki melted the snow away before it turned all of us into mermaids again and took Krystal to the spot previously occupied by Michelle. She showed her daughter a hand motion that made the water steaming hot and asked Krystal to try it. The water steamed even more and a few seconds after was followed by a bolt of lightning. We all yelped and Aunt Rikki took Krystal back to the group. Now it was my turn and I was scared as hell. Mother showed me a hand motion and a water tentacle rose, and then she motioned me to try, dropping her tentacle. With shaking hands I made the same motion, concentrating on a tentacle just like my mother's rising up. I succeeded, the only difference being that my tentacle was bigger, but a few seconds later the wind picked up. Panicking I stopped the hand motion, the wind stopped and the tentacle was about to drop on top of me when it froze in midair. I looked back to see Michelle with her arm out stretched, her hand in a stop motion, smiling proudly along with her parents. I moved to the right and she stopped the hand motion, the tentacle fell to the floor and broke into tiny ice pieces.

"So I think with a little more practice we can control our powers, what about you girls? Krystal asked, but no one answered. The adults shared a look and then looked at me and my friends. The six adults were now looking at each other while I walked over to my friends, at down on the cave's floor and motioned everyone else to do the same.

"It seems to me that there is something you're not telling us. Spill, no more secrets"

"Alright alright, the three of us became mermaids on the night of a full moon here in mako. Unlike you guys the three of us got bronze tails and one power each, I could control water, Emma could freeze, Rikki could heat things up. At first everything was fine, until the first full moon after we turned. Full moons make mermaids do crazy things and they won't remember it at all the next morning. That's why we go out of our way during them. Emma saw a reflection of the moon pool and started acting completely strange. Worse than that, she jumped in the water and her tail wouldn't go away, no matter how dry she was. The next full moon got to me and I became a siren, believe not as fun as it sounds. The one after that got Rikki and she made everything around her heat up. Then two full moons later and the three of us got in the trance, we came to Mako and we got our second power, wind, snow and lighting. You guys have different colored tails and two powers, and we don't understand why." Mother explained to us.

"And this is where I come in. I will do a few experiments on each of you to try and find out what makes you different." My mother, along with everyone but my friends and I groaned. I'm guessing these experiments were no fun.

"Hey mom, are we going to tell Luke about this" Krystal asked and caught everyone's attention. Aunt Rikki tensed and looked at Uncle Zane. Finally with a sigh she answered.

"No. Not right now. We were going to tell him before he went off to college, but we didn't and figured it was best for him to find out after he came back home permanently. He only comes on some weekends, hiding the tail isn't so hard." Luke is Krystal's older brother, nineteen, tall with light brown hair and hazel eyes. He was very smart, a bit of a rule breaker, though not as much as Krystal. The two siblings were only physically different and were very close, even though both refuse to admit it. Krystal nodded, but everyone that knew her could tell she was mad.

"Well it's been a very revealing day. I say we head home for today and start teaching you guys everything we know tomorrow." Aunt Emma said and soon after dived into the water. "I trust that you guys know how to handle your tail, so I say we race back to my house"

"Oh you're on!" both Krystal and her mother said and soon they both dived in followed by Michelle. I looked at my mom and we both shrugged before diving in to join the others.

"At the count of three, the six of you will take off and we'll meet you all at Emma's" my dad said and counted us down. The moment he said three all of us took off and started swimming faster than ever. At first the mothers passed us, having more control over their tails but soon we passed them and left them behind. Now it was between my friends and I. The water felt amazing against my skin and the feeling it gave me was fantastic, the adrenaline rushing through my veins. I could feel myself speed up and soon I lost sight of my friends. I reached Michelle's house three minutes later and waited for the rest. Michelle and Krystal got there two minutes after I did, both looking quite surprised. The moms all got there at the same time, three minutes after Krystal and Michelle. After three more minutes the dads made it to Aunt Emma's house. After we all got dry we decided to get a change of clothes and go to the café for a smoothie. We all went to Michelle's closet and picked out an outfit. (AN: Outfits will be posted on my profile) Krystal picked a floral purple, black and white crop top, white shorts and black and purple flats. She then proceeded to do her usual everyday make up and ended with a purple lipstick that fitted her light complexion nicely. After a little begging from me she allowed me to do her hair, which resulted in a braid that ended in the middle of her back. Michelle wore black jeans ripped at the knees, a grey tank top and vans. She curled her hair slightly and left the down, the soft waves cascading down her back. For finishing touches she added her everyday eye makeup plus a light pink lipstick. I choose a teal dress with the white flats I had been wearing. I applied some teal eyeshadow to match the dress and added a salmon colored lipstick. For a finishing touch I put my hair up in a side ponytail. We said goodbye to the parents and made our way to the café.

The walk was short due to the fact that we all lived close to the café. It was owned by Krystal's parent and it was a huge hit amongst the teens, everyone loved it. Of course the three of us got free drinks but that didn't matter, the business was always good. Krystal's parents no longer worked there, they took over the finances once the café became successful and worked at home. The closer we got to the café, the louder the music, only it wasn't the café's usual band. Just as I was about to ask what happened to the band Krystal answered me.

"We fired. Mark was taking money from the register. They're holding band auditions today." As she said that my eyes lit up like Christmas trees. (AN: If any of you guys have read TFIOS I'm sorry) "Oh no. Nonononno no way. Not gonna happen. Nope not me."

"Not you what" Michelle asked puzzled.

"She wants us to audition for the band"

"Oh no way. I won't do it"

"Please guys. It will be fun I promise, please do it for me. I don't want to audition alone. Pretty please guys" I begged. They exchanged glances, but shook their heads no. I started begging again and asking over and over until they gave in. I squealed and clapped my hands happily as we entered the café.

There were three guys and one girl at the stage. The girl was finishing up a song, but the guys scrunched up their faces and mouthed no to each other. The girl finished her song and the guy with the guitar thanked her for her time and helped her get off the stage. The girl gave him a flirty wink and walked over to a table with three other girls and sat down. I took a closer look at the guitarist. He was tall, with dark hair and green eyes. I have to admit he was handsome, but not exactly my type. I heard a small gasp coming from my right and I knew right away it was Krystal. This guy was perfect for Krystal, the fact that he played guitar was a bonus. She was looking at him, a dazed expression on her face. My guess, she was trying to figure out if he was real, even though she would never admit to it. The guy caught a sight of her and she quickly looked away, but he didn't, he kept looking at her the same dazed expression that had been on her face a few seconds before was now on his, his mouth slightly open. Krystal's cheeks were red, the kind that she would blame on sunburn, but I knew that she was blushing. We made our way to the counter, ordered some smoothies and sat down on the stools. Out of the corner of my eye I saw the guitarist from the band walking over to us, but his eyes were fixed on Krystal.

"Hey girls, my name is Logan and we're holding auditions for our band, we need a second lead singer. Any of you interested" Logan asked us, but I could tell he was only asking Krystal, who had suddenly become very interested in her shoes.

"Actually yes. We were planning on trying out. I'm Lily, this is Michelle and that's Krystal"

"Well, here's a list of songs we're using to hold the auditions, when you're ready just let me know." He said and walked away, stealing one last glance at Krystal. I pulled out my phone and sent a quick text to Michelle

Me: We can't try out. You saw what just happened between her and Logan. The way they looked at each other, we have to make sure she makes it to the band. We'll let her go first and when she's done tell her we changed our minds. She will be mad as hell but it's worth it.

Michelle: Way ahead of you. Let's do this.

I smiled and put my phone away, now it was time to come up with a good reason for Krystal to go first. I picked up the song list and scanned it, pretending to look for a song for myself. My eyes landed on a song that was one of Krystal's favorites and pointed this out to her.

"Look Krystal they have Bring Me to Life, why don't you try it out?" I asked her. She looked at the song list and shrugged, which I took as a yes. "Perfect! Why don't you go first as the two of us pick a song"

"Fine" she said and walked over to the stage. As soon as Logan saw her he smiled. She introduced herself and told him her song selection. He gave her and impressed look, but told the band to get ready. Krystal walked center stage and took the microphone in her hands. I gave her a reassuring smiled and mouthed "good luck" and Michelle gave her thumbs up. The music started and I crossed my fingers, hoping for the best.

The café erupted in cheers as the song ended. They had been great, I didn't know that Krystal was such a good singer. She was breathing heavily but smiled brightly. Logan walked over to her and hugged her, while I fangirled with Michelle.

"Well everyone, I think we got a house favorite, what do you say?" more cheers. "So do we have any more takers? Silence ensued, Krystal looked at us and I avoided eye contact. "Well if that's all I thank you all for coming and just give us a minute as we come up with results." He helped Krystal down the stage and she made her way to us and she did not look happy.

"What the hell was that?! Why didn't you go up?" we began to explain, hoping she would calm down but it only made her angrier. Her fist were balled up and she was shaking, then suddenly the contents of our smoothies blew up landing on all three of us. Fear crossed our faces as we all ran out of the café and dived into the water. Luckily there was no one around to see us dive in. The moment we hit the water our tails appeared. We looked around for a good place to hide so no one would see us. Once we found it we swam over.

"Now what?" I asked, reaching the place.

"Well I could try my power, dry us up and head back to the café. Now that I was the only one to audition I want to make sure I win." I nodded fearfully, but it was better than getting caught with tails.

She concentrated and dried herself up first, wincing as the water evaporated from her scales. Two seconds later she was on her feet. She smiled wickedly and began to walk away.

"Krystal don't you dare leave us here!" Michelle and I exclaimed. She continued to walk away.

"I call this payback" she yelled over her shoulder and made her way to the café once more.

"What are going to do. Someone could see us." I started to panic, moving around frantically.

"Well, first calm down. Let's get out of here and go home, the moms are probably still at my house, Aunt Rikki can help us. And we can't say we didn't expect/deserve this." Michelle said in a calm voice. She moved her body towards the water and waited for me to do the same. I followed her and soon both of us were inside, only our torsos visible. She went completely under, just as I heard Logan's voice come from the café, announcing the new band member, Krystal Bennett. I smiled and went completely under as well, swimming to Michelle's house. At the end it was all worth it, Krystal had made it to the band. With that I sped up and caught up with Michelle as the two of us raced to her house for a second time that day.
