Chapter 13

"Hahahahahaha!" My loud laugh echoed through the forest, bouncing off of the trees surrounding us. "You have got to be kidding me!"

"No. Really. I'm dead serious! We were grounded for like a month after that."

"Yeah. I'd say! If I were your mother….oh man…" I could barely breathe. I wiped away my tears from laughing so hard. "And she still doesn't know that your dad was in on it?"

"Nope. He said if we ever told her that he would deny it and then our fates would be sealed forever. I don't remember exactly what he threatened us with anymore, but it stuck with us." She laughed with me.

"Wow. Well, your brother sounds pretty awesome."

"Yours doesn't sound too bad either." She chided.

"Nah. We've had some great times like that ourselves. You know, when he isn't busy playing the part of the annoying little brother. I'll have to apologize to him later. He doesn't always know when to give it up, but I know he always means well." I sighed, as I picked up blades of grass from the clearing and twirled them in my fingers.

"Ok. Last time I'm gonna ask, I swear. You really don't wanna talk about what had you so upset earlier?" She said softly. I looked up into her eyes and saw nothing but kindness. She was so focused on me, as if my happiness actually made a difference in her life. It was…strange. Definitely a new feeling for me, at least outside of my family anyway. She wasn't obligated to ask or even to care, but she did all the same.

"It was just a stupid dream…" I mumbled half under my breath.

"If you really thought that, Leah, it wouldn't bother you so much. It must have been quite the dream." She placed her hand overtop of mine. I jumped a bit at the unexpected contact, dropping the blades of grass and clovers. "Oh, sorry." She said, pulling her hand back. Was she really blushing or was that my imagination?

"It's ok. I was just thinking about it. I just wasn't expecting…it's fine."

"Why not just think outloud? Guide me through it? Yeah?"

"Ok. Why not? Let's see…so it was storming and…"

I started from the beginning and walked her through the dream. She never interrupted me. She watched me, nodding now and then to let me know she was still with me. I heard her small gasp at the point when I almost fell into the chasm. That almost brought a smile to my face. When I got to the point where she featured in the dream I paused. I didn't want her to think me creepy for having dreamt about her. Especially since we'd only met once before. And I didn't want my dream to suddenly freak her out because something bad seemed to happen to her in it. I mean, that's definitely more than a little unsettling, right? So I lied. I continued with the dream but when I got to the clearing and the tree, there was nothing there. No animals, no people, nothing.

"Then all of the sudden there was a blood-curdling scream from out of nowhere echoing around me. I woke up screaming like that. Not entirely sure why." I finished. We sat there in silence like that for a little while. Finally she sighed.

"Wow. That's…horrible. Jeez, no wonder you were so freaked out."

"Yeah…"

"So, let me get this straight. You weren't just watching the wolf? You WERE the wolf?" she asked. I just nodded. She leaned in closer and glanced around before asking,

"….have you seen the wolves around here?"

"Wait, what?" I spluttered out. Oh crap. How was I going to deal with this? This was not the turn this was supposed to take.

"You know, have you seen any wolves in the area?"

"No," I said swiftly, trying to sound as nonchalant as possible, as if wolves didn't even exist in the area. I failed miserably. She saw. "I mean, I hear them at night, but they never come near people." I hurried to add.

"No, no! It's ok! That's not what I meant! I just, I have seen one. Always the same one. But it's never been vicious or anything. I'm just saying I don't think you being that wolf in the dream is a bad thing, you know? Maybe it's a sign of strength or something?" She spoke quickly, trying to calm me. Thank goodness she had misinterpreted my words. She thought the wolves made me nervous because of the dream. She didn't really know anything. Whew. "Who knows, maybe it doesn't mean anything at all! Maybe there was a pack of wolves in the forest that night howling at the moon and it just crept into your dream subconsciously. You know, like how people's alarm clocks are sometimes phones ringing or smoke alarms in their dreams?" She gave me a weak smile.

Wow that simple smile was incredible. I couldn't help but smile back. And when I did, hers only widened.

"Yeah. Yeah. I bet you're right! That's all it was. I was silly for being so shaken up."

"No you weren't!" She said indignantly, "That dream sounded genuinely freaky! Steven King could probably base one hell of a scary book off that dream! You were so justified!"

I couldn't help but laugh at that.

"What? What's so funny?" She yelled over my laughter. But that didn't last long. Soon she was laughing too and we were both rolling on the cool grass of the clearing once again.

When we finally could stop, we looked around and noticed how dark it was becoming.

"Oh, crap." Megan hissed, "Mom's gonna start calling me here in a few minutes wondering where I am. I swear, I'm 19 years old, nearly 20, and sometimes she still treats me like I'm 9." She grumbled as she stood up and brushed herself off.

"Tell me about it!" I chimed in, getting back to my feet as well, "It must be in the unwritten laws of motherhood or something! We'd better get going."

We started walking down the path that led back to the beach.

"Well, I'm sorry I kept you from getting any painting done today," I offered. Then I noticed she only had her bag with her. "Hey, wait…where is your canvas?"

"Oh. Yeah. I wasn't planning on painting today. I wasn't up for toting the easel and canvas today. I just brought my sketch book and pencils with me today. And don't worry about me not getting anything done. Some days are just not meant to be work days," She shrugged her shoulders. "Besides. I had more important things to do today," she said warmly, turning to smile at me. "I made a new friend."

I practically beamed back at her, my smile so huge my cheeks began to hurt. "Yeah. Me too."

A/N: Hey guys. I am back. I am so very sorry for the long wait I have put everyone through. I was suffering from a lack of motivation for a while. And when that happens I like to go on a reading binge. Then after a couple weeks, when I was ready to revisit this story, my nearly 5 year relationship came to an end. Needless to say that was a huge motivation killer. It's really hard to write anything for an imprint story when your love life is in shambles. Anyway, not trying to start a pity party here. Just wanted to let you know that I haven't abandoned you or this story! I am back for good. This chapter was even a little longer than usual! And its the first thing I have written in a while that I am truly happy with! I hope you enjoyed it! If you did - leave me a review and let me know! If you didn't- leave me a review and let me know! Especially let me know why! I love hearing feedback! And I promise I am a big girl - I can take it! Thanks for everyone who has expressed interest in this story, reviewed, favorited, followed, etc! It is very inspiring! A special thanks to camron for messaging me and pestering me a little to get this out! Definitely got me working harder! Until the next time! ~~Kate
