Episode Thirteen: Arrow on the Doorpost; Chapter Ten: Sacrificing

Daryl stops his motorcycle and turns the engine off: after we finally arrived at where we'll met up with the Governor.

I hop off and made sure I had bullets in my rifle, before making my way to the others as Hershel just pulls in. Rick climbs out, while Leo was in the back with the grenades. Don't ask me why, but Rick thought it was a great idea to bring along a bag full of grenades for some reason? Ugh! You can't imagine how fucked up that is!

Rick and Daryl went ahead to check everything was clear. I stayed behind for a second to see Leo and Hershel had back up ammo in case there was an ambush, while we were gone.

I took an uneasy breath. "If you hear gunfire, you know what to do." I said glancing at both them.

They nod before I ran after Daryl and Rick.

I eventually caught up with them. Daryl stops us then gesture forward to the barn. It looked like nobody was there, but it couldn't be though? We already found some zombs killed. So the Governor had to be here!

Me and Rick enter the barn cautiously, while Daryl stayed outside, peaking through the window in case things got crazy in here.

It was dark and musky. The only thing I could see was a table with three chairs. One chair was on one end, while the other two were on the opposite end to that. There was huge hole on the roof letting in some light.

I suddenly heard footsteps. I gulped a big lump in my throat, my palms were sweaty. I tried my best to look intimidating, but that was kind of hard when I saw the Governor lurking out of the shadows.

He puts his hands up in the air, then smiles.

I flinched causing me to aim my rifle at him as a reflex. He notices this and smiles more.

"Welcome Val... Rick..."

The way he said my name gave me chills down my spine. Barely been here for about two minutes and my gut is screaming at me to get the hell outta here!

His smile drops when Rick was still giving him death glares. He puts his hands down and said. "We have a lot to talk about." he says.

"You attacked us, that makes things pretty clear." Rick said.

"I tried to make things clear. I could've killed you all, but I didn't." Governor told us.

I rolled my eyes. "No, you just wanted to show off your gun power." I muttered sarcastically.

He snickers, then he moves and Rick aims his revolver. "I want to remove my weapon to show you I mean to negotiate. I will like you to do the same."

I glances out the window, Daryl was still there. His crossbow ready in case the Governor tried anything.

"May I?" the Governor spoke, slowly reaching for his gun.

Rick let's him remove the holster. "You see." he said, Putting his hands up. "No trouble...now you."

Rick was about to put his revolver back in it's holster until I stopped him. "No, don't. We're not going to remove our weapons until you get rid of ALL of yours." I demanded.

Rick gives me a weird look, while the Governor sighs in defeat and pulls a knife from the back of his pants. He throws it to the side. He was about to take a seat until I spoke up again.

"And underneath the table." I ordered.

Governor nods before pulling out a gun duct taped under the table on his side.

"Remove the bullets and toss it." I added.

He did what I told him and took the bullets out, then throwing it far from us.

After that was done. Rick and me put our guns away, as the Governor took a seat. "You're pretty smart Val. That would keep you from getting killed."

"It wasn't street smarts. It's the oldest trick in the book. Even I wouldn't do it."

Rick looks at me then back at the Governor. He just smirks before saying. "You're right." he agreed. "Please... Have a seat."

Leo-

"He's already in there." Daryl told us. "Sitting with Rick and Val."

"It's not ambush." I stated. "If it was; they would've mowed us down."

"He does have a point." Hershel agreed.

"Yeah but it still don't feel right. Keep it running." Daryl tells Hershel to keep the engine on.

Suddenly we heard a truck coming this way fast.

"Heads up!" Daryl warns.

I jump out of the car and got my hand gun ready. If shit went crazy, at least somebody was there to watch Daryl's back.

The truck stops. Andrea, Milton and Martinez all get out.

"Why the hell is your boy in there?" Daryl demanded.

"He's here?" Andrea questions.

"Yup." Daryl says.

Andrea glances at Martinez. He didn't say anything. She strides inside the barn, leaving us behind.

Val-

Rick and me remain standing. Refusing to come any closer than we have too.

The barn doors slams open. Andrea steps in. "What's going on?"

"Nothing. We just having a small talk." the Governor claims.

"If you wanna talk? Talk." Rick orders.

"I want you to talk." Andrea reminds them. "Too many people have died for no reason. Let's end this. Save the bullets for the real threat. We can solve this. That's why I asked you to come here." she explains.

They just ignore her, like she didn't say anything.

"I know what you done." Rick admits. "I heard about the raids, the heads and Maggie."

"Merle did that." the Governor interrupted.

"You know what I'm talking about."

"You know all about me and I know all about you. I don't care about any of that. We're here to move forward." the Governor expressed.

This guy full of shit!

Leo-

"Maybe I should go inside?" Hershel says.

"The Governor thought it was best to speak to Rick privately." Milton informed.

"Who the hell are you?" Daryl asks.

"Milton Mamet." he introduces himself.

"Great! He brought his butler." Daryl said sarcastically.

We all snickered.

"I'm his adviser." he stated.

"What kind of advise?"

"Planning, biters-I think I don't need to explain myself to the henchman."

"You better watch your mouth, Sunshine." Daryl warns.

"If you and I are going to point guns at each other? Do me a favor, shut your mouth." Martinez says.

"You sound like a bitch." I muttered.

"You got something say?!" Martinez demanded, marching over and pressing his gun on my face.

Everyone tries to calm him down.

"We don't need this. If everything goes south in there. We'll be at each others throats soon enough." Hershel reasoned.

Martinez lowers his weapon and steps back. "Then you better watch your back, Pretty boy. Before you get other arm broken."

Val-

"I've known you both at different times. Only after the world went to shit. You both step up for the good of others-at a great personal risk. There's no reason-" the Governor cuts Andrea off.

"Get to the point!" the Governor snaps.

I smack the map on the table. It was circled on opposite sides, separating our territories.

This wasn't going to work. I told Rick that but Hershel wanted to give it a shot. But I knew the Governor won't do it because he was a jackass like that.

"Woodbury takes west of the river. And the Prison takes east. No one crosses or no one trades." Rick proposes.

"He's right! We should stay in our boundaries and leave each other alone." Andrea agrees.

"What the hell is this?" the Governor questions.

"What's it look like to you?" I asked. "It's basically a peace treaty. If everyone stays in their territory, then none of us don't have to waste our ammo on each other."

The Governor chuckles before throwing the map back. "Absolutely not."

"Then why are we here in the first place? YOU TOLD ME. HE WAS WILLING TO TALK!"

"Rick!" I hollered. "Ri-"

"I am." the Governor interrupts. "Truth is...she's in no position to make such an offer anyway."

I looked at Andrea to find her astonished. He's a real piece of shit. I mean what kind of leader refuses a peace treaty? If I were her I would knock his lights out with a shovel... while on fire.

"I'm here for one thing only: your surrender." The Governor demands.

"You want surrender? Come get it!" Rick commands.

"Rick calm down!" I ordered. "Don't listen to him! He's messin' with you're head! All he wants is for you to make the first shot! Don't let him do that!"

"Everyone just calm down!" Andrea exclaims. "We here to settle things!"

"You're right." the Governor agrees. "Would you step outside?"

"What?"

"Rick and I have a lot to talk about."

"I'm not leavin-"

"I came here to talk to him." Rick points out. "Val. Leave."

I nodded, making my way out of the barn with Andrea until the Governor spoke up. "Wait for a second."

I stop dead in my tracks. My heart thumping in my chest, as I got chills down my spine.

"Val, you can stay. But Andrea needs to leave. I have a lot to talk about with you." he says, watching me very carefully.

At that moment I thought my heart just stop.

[Click]

Rick eventually sat down, while I still remain standing. I was too on edged to give a shit about my feet.

"So you're the Governor?" Rick started.

"That's their term, not mine." he corrects.

"But still. You're beholden to your people."

"Well of course."

"You have a responsibility to them."

The Governor nods.

"Wasn't Merle your lieutenant?" Rick interrogates.

"He was helpful then."

"But you knew he was erratic."

He didn't say anything.

"You blame him for scooping up Glenn and Maggie in the first place?"

"Exactly! I was trying to sorted it out. When you attack!"

"So it was his fault because you obviously don't know how to keep your dogs on a leash? Is that what you're saying? You suck at being a leader?" I questioned.

He watches me for a minute before answering."Val, you'll come to realize when you're in charge, you'll understand some things you can't control. Like for example; Merle. What he did was purely out of spite. I don't know what happen between you. But regardless of my position. What he already did was done and-"

"Here I thought you would taken responsibility." Rick muttered. Already fed up with his little speech. "Not make some bullshit excuse!"

"I thought you were a cop. Not a lawyer." the Governor remark.

"Either way I don't pretend to be a Governor." Rick insults.

There was a awkward pause between them.

"I told you I'm their leader."

"You're the town drunk!" Rick spat. "Who knock down my fence and ripped up my yard. Nothing more."

The Governor just watches him and smirks. "Did you ever misjudge someone? Huh? Andrea told me about your baby."

Rick looks like he wanted to strangle him.

"It might be your partner. But you're caring for her. And I admire you for that. Restitution for your lack of insight. Failing to see the devil beside you."

"Oh I see him, alright." Rick says.

He just chuckles then stood up. "I brought whiskey!"

Leo-

Daryl was pacing back and forth. He was probably just as nervous as I was. After Andrea came back out, Daryl ask where Val was. And she told us that the Governor ordered her to stay with them.

So that wasn't a good sign.

I glance at him again. Daryl might not be saying it but he sure is worried about her.

"Leo. I would like to ask you a few questions, as we're waiting?" Milton ask.

"Yeah? What kind of questions?" I asked, raising an eyebrow.

"Ummmm...how long has Valerie been infected?" he asks before scribbling on his note book.

"Why you wanna know that?" Daryl demanded.

"Because it's good data to keep. She's the only known survivor to be bitten." he answered. "So Leo, was Val given any injections or pills before the time she got bit."

I shrug. "No idea. I wasn't there."

"She didn't take nothing!" Daryl protested. "She just made it. End of story."

"There's has to be an scientific explanation." he pauses before turning back to me. "If I could take some blood sample-"

"If you come anywhere near her with a needle, I'll kill you!" Daryl threaten.

It got quiet again for few minutes, until Milton opens his mouth again. "At least be open minded-"

"Hey, Mamet...shut your mouth!" Martinez commanded.

"What are you the Governor?" Daryl remarks.

Martinez was about to said something until we heard groans.

Andrea gets up with her knife in her hand. Daryl goes ahead, while Martinez gets his baseball bat.

[Click]

"May I ask how you lost your leg?" Milton asks Hershel. As we were all sitting down next to each other.

"I was bitten." Hershel answers.

"So you cut off your leg to keep the infection from spreading? Interesting..." he mutters, putting back on his glasses. "How long from the initial bite?"

"Immediately." Hershel replies, flip through another page on Milton notebook.

"You didn't bleed out?" he said astonished.

"They were good people, who took care of me." Hershel states.

"Doctors?"

"No. We learn from the trial of the era."

"Me too." Milton agreed. "May I see it. Your stump-i - uh." he clears his throat. " I would like to see the amputation. How high up the bite."

"I'm not showing you my leg." Hershel said.

"It's important data."

"I just met you. At least buy me a drink first." Hershel jokes.

I couldn't help but laugh.

Val-

The Governor pours us both some whiskey. While he continues to talk. "I care about my people and they don't dislike lightly. And I don't think you don't either. In a way this fight is a fail of leadership."

"Then why aren't you leaving us alone?" I asked.

"Simple," he took a sip of his whiskey. "You broke in my backyard. And shot up main street. If I let that fly by? That'll make me look weak."

"That's your problem, not ours." Rick said. "That's your choice."

"And that's why we're here?" the Governor points out. "Choice? If we choose to destroy everything, everything we fought for over the past year." he pauses "We're going to kill everyone we know. Back at your prison and back at Woodbury. People we love, Rick."

Rick doesn't say anything. Just kept quiet while the Governor continues.

"I was at work one day. Taking shit from a boss half my age, IQ even lower. The telephone rang, my wife has been in an accident. "Sorry Mr. Blake. We did everything we could."" he quotes the doctor. "I sat there holding that phone, knowing I would never see her again." he snaps his fingers. "Gone! Just an accident, nobody's fault. She left an voicemail to call her back. I haven't had a chance yet. I just sat there clutching that phone...What did she want? Just to check in? Ask me to pick something up for dinner? What did she want?"

I felt sorry for him, because I could kind of relate to that. After my Dad got shot, I never said how much I loved him and how much he means to me. Call me a daddy's girl if you want! But I love my Dad regardless.

He's didn't die though, that gunshot put him into a coma; like Rick was...Still it feels like he is.

Back when I was still in my world, I came over the hospital to visit him, once or twice a week. Leo would occasionally come with me. But still didn't help. He'll always be in his comatose state, nothing won't change.

I felt the tears coming on. I tried so hard not to cry.

I missed him so much. I would give anything to see my dad again.

I took my whiskey and down the whole thing in one gulp.

The Governor watches me, before standing up and saying. "Truth is, I never wanted any of this. They choose me because there was nobody around. They still think I'm the man to keep them safe. They still think I know what I'm doing." he grab his gun and puts it back in it's holster. "I know you have guns. That was quiet a stash you brought the other day... My people aren't combat assistants like yours are. But I got more of them. This fight will go down to the last man."

Rick glares at him.

"Let's end it, today." the Governor proposes. "Let's not do this. We can walk away."

Rick still glared at him. Not saying anything.

"You have something I want. One thing that makes it alright." he admits.

"I'm not giving up the prison." Rick declared.

The Governor chuckles. "I don't want your prison. That doesn't sound safe at all. I mean, you lost your wife and another man."

Rick nods in agreement. "But we're not moving on."

"What good would that do for me?" the Governor ask. "Best to keep my wonkied eye on you."

He takes his eye patch off, revealing his other eye is no longer there. Just a really bad flesh wound.

"I want Val." he said, shifting his gaze at me.

[Click]

I stared at him in disbelief.

He wanted me? Why? I'm not as useful as Michonne! So why in the hell does he want me?!

"Val if you come with me, then I will guarantee no harm comes to your group. You'll be doing your people a great service."

I looked at him dumbfounded. "A service?!"

He nods.

I felt sick in my stomach. All I wanted is to puke. "It's more like sacrificing a lamb!"

"Just think about it. No more hiding. It'll be all over if you come with me." he gestured. "Unless you just want your group to die."

"Are you threatening me?"

"No, of course not. I'm just saying, it would be a shame to see something happen. That's all."

Rick laughs hysterically.

I think he's finally cracked-well more than he already has.

"You try threatening my family and you still think I would give her up?! You got to do a lot better than that, for me to hand her over like that!"

"It's her call, not yours. She'll have to decide for herself." he reminds him. "Val, what's it going to be?"

He watches me, waiting for me to say something. I just stand there, totally frozen. Like I was a deer staring at a pair of headlights. I had no clue how to response or do anything.

Then it hit me like a bitch, whatever I decide will effect everyone I cared about... Even Daryl.

I swallowed hard.

But if I agree...he'll go back on his word and try to kill everyone. So why would I anyways. It'll basically be for nothing though.

I looked back at him before giving him my answer.

Leo-

The barn door slams open, the Governor walks out, pulling Val along with him.

"Shit!" I hissed, trying to stop him.

The Governor pulls a gun on me.

"Martinez open the door." he orders.

Martinez quickly opens the back door for Val, while Daryl tries to get to her.

"HEY! HEY! HEY! WHAT THE HELL YOU THINK YOU'RE DOING." Daryl demands.

"She made her choice!" the Governor announced.

"Val!" Dary calls

But she doesn't say anything. Instead she ignores him.

"VAL!" he yells again, but this time he got to close and the Governor points his gun at him.

"DARYL GO BACK!" she screams, you could see she was crying. Though she hid her face with her hair. "Go back to the prison with Rick, Hershel and Leo...and everyone else."

"What the hell you talkin' about?"

"Daryl! Just go home and I don't want you! And I obviously don't need you! Now get the hell out of my way before I kick your ass!"

This wasn't her. I've never seen her act like this before. The Governor must have blackmail her or something! There's no way she'll talk to Daryl like that. We all knew she had a thing for the guy!

Daryl looked taken back and then just nodded. "Alright...if that's what you want." he mutters, walking over to his motorcycle.

The Governor shoves her in the back with Andrea and Milton.

Rick marches out of the barn the climbs in the driver's side, while Hershel and me joins in.

Did that just happen?

Val-

I can't believe I said those awful things to him. Oh god...He probably hates me...

I could feel the tears cascading down my cheeks. Damn it... He hates me...

[Flashback]

"If I do this? Run for supplies and anything. You'll have no reason to attack." I asked.

"Absolutely." he says.

"If I find out you fucked me over, you're gonna wish you were dead." I threaten.

"Then I have nothing to worry about." he assures.

[End of Flashback]

He parks the truck, after we just arrived at Woodbury.

My heart was thumping so hard, I thought it was going to give out.

The Governor opens the door for me and yanking me out.

I wince in pain. Almost falling flat on my face.

"Welcome home." he whispers in my ear. Causing chills ran down my spine.

I could tell he was pressing his gun at my back. "Move."

I did what he told me to do and kept walking.

He nods at Martinez. "You know exactly what to do. Kill everybody; who tries to come for her."

Martinez nods.

I was starting to freak out. "We had a deal! You told me nothing happen to them?!"

"I lied." he whispers.

I glared at him. "Fucker."

"Val, are you okay?" Andrea asks.

I turn to face her, where she couldn't see him pointing a gun on my back. "Yeah I'm okay." I smiled. "Philip was going to show me around before dinner. I'll see you in a sec."

She watches me skeptical but soon drops it. "Okay, I'll see ya." she nods, and walks away.

Leo-

"So I met this Governor." Rick pauses. "Sat with him for a while."

"Just the two of you?" Merle asked.

Rick nods.

"Should've gone when we had a chance." Merle says under his breath, then leaves.

"He wants the prison. He wants us gone-dead." he corrects himself. "He wants us dead; for what we did to Woodbury." he stops and looks at all our faces.

"He wanted to make a deal; because we had something and he didn't...So exchange for leaving us alone. He wanted Val..."

Everyone was too shock to even say anything. I was too because I thought the Governor wanted Michonne? Instead he wanted Val?!

"It was her call. She wanted to do this. So she can protect us. Keep us alive!" he stops for a second looking at all of our face before continuing. "However... I came to realization, while I was on my way back...it was mistake for me to let her go... I know I should've stop her. But I can't change the past..."

Everyone remain quiet.

"We're going to get her back! I don't care if I die trying, but the real war starts now!" Rick announced.

I nod. "I'm going with you!" I spoke up.

"Me too." Carol says, stepping forward.

"So are we!" Glenn spoke up.

"We all in this together. We'll get her somehow." Maggie assured.

All of us glance towards Daryl's direction. He just looks away and leaves the cell block.

"I guess I have no other choice..." Michonne sighs. "I can't let you go into a blood bathe by yourself. Somebody has to watch your back."

I laughed. "You just don't wanna be left behind with Merle."

"What hell is that suppose to mean, pansy!" Merle asked.

This made me laugh harder. I really like this group. They cared about each other and that was rare to find; in this fucked up world.

"When do we rescue her?" Maggie asks.

All eyes were on Rick until he turns to look at everybody. "Two days." he stated, walking away.

Val-

Some guy carried me over his shoulder like I was a rag doll. "Put me down, asshole!" I demanded.

Then he throws me in a chair, strapping me in.

I was literally panicking. Trying so hard to get these restraints off me.

"You're wasting your time." the Governor says, as he was holding a syringe in his hand. "There's no way you'll get out of here alive."

Then I felt the worst pain possible, causing me to scream in agony.

RainbowKissez101: I'm not going to lie. This was probably the hardest chapter I've written so far. But I'm very excited I'm finished with it :3 so thank you so much for reading and please leave a review. I'll see you in the next Walking Dead chapter!
