A/N: Chapter time! To the person who reviewed as guest, I think their name was Ally: Yes, I did know R5 was coming to Winnipeg again, I already got my tickets a while ago! :) Maybe I'll see you there!
Christmas is four days away! What does everyone want!?
Disclaimer: you know.
Ally POV
"Are you sure you're okay?" I asked Sam for the fourth time.
"Yes, Ally, I'm perfectly fine!"
"Really? Because you just made that guy a Strawberry Frappuccino when he asked for an Iced Latte."
It was after school on the following Monday, November 5th, and Sam and I both worked the 4-8 shift alone. She had been distracted the whole time.
"Shit," she muttered, chucking the drink in the bin. "Now I have to start over."
"I'll do it," I told her, grabbing a new cup. "You can go do the register."
While I made the drink, I heard Sam arguing with a customer. "No, ma'am, I'm positive your total is $7.34."
"But the drinks are two for four dollars! The tax shouldn't be that much."
I rolled my eyes, quickly gave the guy his drink, and hurried over. "Is there a problem?"
"She thinks I'm over charging her," Sam told me. "Which I'm not," she added to the lady.
I checked the register. "You put down two for six, not two for four." I looked at the lady. "I'm so sorry about that, ma'am. Your new total is $4.68."
"Much better!" She handed me the cash with a smile, but glared at Sam when I handed back her change. She stalked off to wait.
I turned to Sam while we made the drinks. "What's wrong? And don't tell me nothing."
"But there is nothing wrong!"
"You've never been like this before; you're usually great at your job! Unlike today, where I just saved you from having your ass fired," I told her. "Or from assaulting that lady. Is it Austin?"
"Why would you think it's Austin?" She snapped. Damn, she may have been sweet ninety-five percent of the time, but Samantha had a devil side to her as well.
"Because ever since you guys broke up, you've been distracted. I thought the break up was mutual. Did he do something to you? Because I'll kill him if he did."
"Fine, you're right. But no, he didn't do anything. Yes, it was mutual, it's just that, I haven't talked to Austin since we broke up, which was over a week ago, and we were really good friends before we dated and now I'm scared everything is ruined. So I've been avoiding him because we really shouldn't have tried anything more than what we had. God, I'm so stupid."
"You're not stupid," I told her. I put lids on the drinks. "But in the meantime, just relax and try and work properly. Who knows, maybe he'll come in later and you can talk."
She grudgingly took the drinks from my hand and brought them over to the counter for the lady to pick up. I followed her to make sure a fight didn't go down.
The lady left just as the door to the cafe opened and Austin walked in with some ginger guy beside him. They were busy talking.
"I spoke too soon," I said.
Sam squeaked. "Shit, hide me!"
"But-" She ducked down beside me, leaving me "alone".
I glanced down and glared at her before walking over to the counter. I could feel her against my leg as she crawled beside me quietly.
"Oh, hey," Austin said when he saw me.
"Hi," I replied.
He looked at me for a second before speaking again. "Oh! Uh, this is my friend, Dez," He said as he gestured to the ginger. "Dez, this is Ally."
"Best friend," the guy named Dez corrected. So this must be the guy that was dating Claudia's friend. I couldn't think of many people that would be named Dez. Plus, he was probably part of the popular group if he was Austin's friend. "But nice to meet you, Ally! I've heard lots about you."
"Seriously?"
Dez nodded frantically. "Yeah! You're the girl Austin tripped."
Austin elbowed him. "Dude, really?"
"Sorry," Dez said before looking around. "You're working here alone?"
"Yep, all alone. All by my lonesome. Just me, myself and I," I laughed nervously. Sam pinched my leg. "Ow!" I yelped.
The boys looked at me weirdly. "Uh, leg spasm," I lied.
"Mm, I feel you, girl," Dez said. "I get those daily. Sometimes I get them so bad, it's like I'm attempting to tap dance."
I got the feeling he wasn't the sharpest tool in the shed.
Austin actually looked embarrassed. I decided to spare him. "Okay...uh, what can I get you guys?"
"I'll just get the usual," Dez said.
"Dude, she's never taken your order; she doesn't know your usual," Austin said.
"I thought that when people say "the usual", the waitress or cashier just knows it," Dez said.
"Yeah, maybe in the movies."
Dez sighed. "Fine. It's a large Blueberry shake. With a ton of whip cream."
I tapped it into the register. "Are these separate?"
"No, I'm paying," Dez said sadly. "I lost to Austin in a video game." Austin grinned in triumph.
"Okay, what do you want, Austin?"
"I'll have a medium Oreo Frappuccino," he said. "With lots of whip cream, too." He turned to Dez and they did a little handshake with "What up!" at the end. I inwardly shook my head. Boys.
"$4.68," I said. Dez handed me his debit card, and I swiped it through the machine.
"Ally, can you tell Sam I have to talk to her when you see her next?" Austin asked. "I thought she was supposed to work today, but apparently she doesn't."
"Oh, for god's sake," I said before reaching down and pulling Sam up by the arm.
"Ow!" She exclaimed. "That hurt."
"Sam?" Austin said. "What the hell were you doing on the ground?"
"Looking for my name tag?" She tried. She looked down at her chest, where her name tag sat, reading SAMANTHA. "Guess I found it," she laughed nervously.
"That was like magic!" Dez said, mesmerized. "Pop up again!"
"Dez, no." Austin looked at Sam. "Can I talk to you? Privately?"
She glanced at me. I gave her a little push towards the door that separated the back from the front, and she sighed before nodding and walking out. They went over to a booth in the corner.
Dez spoke while I made their drinks. The restaurant was dead, so it was just him in line. "So, Austin tells me you were the first to know about the breakup."
"Guess so," I said.
"Did you guys have a date?"
"Me and Austin?" I spluttered. "God no!"
"What's wrong with Austin?"
"Uh, he's extremely mean to me?"
"He didn't seem mean just now," Dez said.
"Yeah, well, he has his moments," I replied.
"You know, you're the first girl who hasn't fallen for him as soon as you laid eyes on him."
"I thought Sam and him were good friends before they dated," I said, turning to him.
"They were, yeah. Sam secretly liked him, though."
"Oh, you're an expert, are you?"
"Duh. I'm the Love Whisperer." He actually whispered it. I just raised my eyebrow and gave him his drink.
"Thanks. Look, Ally, I know Austin can be sort of-"
"A jerk? Dick wad? Jackass?" I offered.
"Yeah," he sighed. "But I've known him for as long as I can remember. Just ease up on him; he's been through a lot."
"If you promise me to keep him in line, then I'll try and be nice to him. Okay?" I said.
Dez grinned. "Deal. Thanks, Ally."
I nodded just as the other two walked back. "What were you two talking about?" Austin asked.
"School," I said at the same time Dez said, "Ducks."
"Ducks," I tried again, but Dez said, "School."
Sam looked at us weirdly. "Uh, we meant a school of ducks," Dez said.
"Isn't it a school of fish?" Austin asked.
"Same difference."
They took their drinks. "We've gotta go," Dez said. "But we'll see you ladies at school tomorrow."
"Bye," I said, Sam giving a little wave. Austin waved and they left.
"So was it awkward?" I asked Sam.
"No, surprisingly," she replied. "We both agreed to stay friends. We were better that way."
"Well, that's good then." I stopped. "This doesn't mean I like him anymore though."
"Oh, come on, Ally, you have to admit, he's been nicer to you."
"Sort of, but he's more rude than he is nice," I told her. "I'm still sketchy about him. But fine, I don't hate him as much anymore."
She grinned. "Good. Because we're all going to Homecoming together."
"Excuse me?" I shrieked, causing a few people in the booths to glance in our direction. "No, I am not doing that. Besides, I already told Trish I would go with her, and that's not even a for sure."
"Well, I don't care, just as long as you go."
"I said maybe," I told her.
"Fine." Sam grabbed the broom. "Clean up time."
