Hi guys! Oh my god it's been SO long since I've updated! First off, apologises for that but I just had a CRAZY exam year and I've been typing this chapter on and off for the past few days. Second thanks to flower666, eph1027, Pop-Your-Iscicle and killer4853 for following and/or favourite-ing, and to killer4853 and the guest reviewer for reviews. All comments are constructive, so thank you!
Right, so sorry if this sucks because I am a bit out of practice, but please feel free to review (and if you're hating, please be nice!)
Chapter 14
I touched the screen lightly with my fingertips. It was her, exactly as I remembered. Her address was the exact same as it was fifteen years ago, and-
I glanced down at the very last detail, date of death- 10thMay, 2000.
My heart stopped for a split second. I put my head in my hands. All these years, believing she was still alive, deluding myself...
I swallowed back the tears threatening to make yet another appearance, then I realised; Peggy wouldn't have made it nearly as easy to track her down, she told me herself she had too many enemies. I thought hard, thinking of all the afternoons we spent together, hoping she had left me any kind of clue...
A flash of metal caught my attention. I looked over at the bedside locker I had obliterated, ages ago, it seemed, and saw that a locket had been placed there. A very familiar looking locket. I picked it up and my hand went automatically to my neck, which was of course bare. I turned it over and over in my hands, remembering the day it was given to me...
"Now this," Peggy told me seriously, holding up the silver locket, "is a very special locket. It belonged to my grandmother, God rest her soul, and she gave it to me before she died, and told me I would go on to do great things. Now I'm going to give you this, and whenever you feel upset, or afraid, remember this locket," she fastened it around my neck, where it fit perfectly, "and know that all of your troubles will pass. Alright?"
I fiddled with the locket. "Does it open?"
She smiled, before replacing my clumsy fingers with her quick slender ones, and the locket clicked open. The face of the super solider I had seen in the pictures grinned at me.
"It's very beautiful Peggy, thank you," I told her solemnly, and she smiled again. I paused before saying, "Peggy, can I ask you something?"
"Of course you can."
"What was your granny's name?"
"Margaret, like me. Margaret Elizabeth Hawkins."
I typed the name into the computer. It was the only link Peggy had ever given me to her personal past, before SHIELD and that anyway, and I clutched the locket with my free hand around my neck as the results were loading.
One result for "Agent Margaret Elizabeth Hawkins."
I clicked it eagerly, and sure enough, Peggy's picture came up again, only this time, it was definitely a few years older. I touched the screen lightly again. The address given was a nursing home on the outskirts of Manhattan.
"Hey, Jarvis?" I called out timidly.
"Yes Chrissie?"
"Can I ask for a favour?"
"Why is it that your tone of voice suggests that this "favour" will break a lot of rules and get both you and me in an awful lot of trouble?"
I stayed silent and looked up and the camera sheepishly, and I tell you, if Jarvis could have sighed, he would have then.
"What is it you need?"
"How far away is this address?" I reached for a pen and paper to write down the address and hold it up to the camera but Jarvis already replied, "Roughly five minutes if driving at 100km/h, which you and I both know is an impossibility due to Manhattan traffic, so thirty five to forty minutes will running at your average speed Chrissie."
"What the-"
"I am an Artificial Intelligence Chrissie." He said it like it explained everything.
"Right. Is Steve still outside?"
"He has lead Mr. Barton to believe he has been relieved of his duties for this evening, and that a replacement is on the way. They are currently in the games room, three floors above us, where Captain Rogers has challenged Mr. Barton to a game of darts."
I grinned at that; Steve might have had the serum and the precise aim that came with that, but according to Natasha Clint was unparalleled when it came to archery or anything aim related, and was rarely seen out in public without his arrows. I had to remember to ask Steve how that game played out.
Jarvis showed he how to get to the nursing home with an aerial map on the computer, and once I had it memorised (which didn't take long, I might add, thanks to the serum, which I suppose did have its perks) I asked Jarvis if he could open the door.
"Just a moment," was the abrupt answer before a portion of the wall slid back and two robotic arms sprung out. I took the object out of their hands. "I've heard that belt bags are quite fashionable now, especially with runners," Jarvis said, speaking about the neon pink belt bag in one of my hands.
I slipped it around my waist. "And fashion is important why?"
"What you wear forms 60-90% of someone's first impression of you, and people wearing brighter colours tend to do better," Jarvis rattled off. "The cell phone has all of the Avenger's telephone numbers in it, in case of an emergency."
"Why-"
"New York City can be a dangerous place Chrissie," he said gravely as the phone buzzed and I looked up at the camera in confusion. "Answer the phone, Chrissie; I can give you directions then."
I nodded and answered the call, holding it to my ear.
"The code for the door is 3457," the last voice I expected to hear said at the other end of the phone. I actually dropped the phone in shock, and it bounced twice on the ground before I had realised what had happened. I cursed and bent to pick it up.
"What the HELL Stark?!" I whisper-shouted.
"The code for the door is 3457," Tony repeated.
"Is this a trick? Is Fury there? Are you two having a laugh?" I demanded as Tony sighed.
"No Chrissie, it's just me, I want to help."
I laughed without humour. "That's hilarious. Give me one good reason to trust you."
"Steve," he said simply, and my breath hitched in my throat.
"Go on," I said through my teeth.
"We're all really worried about him-"
"We?"
"Me, Nat, Clint and Bruce. The team or what's left of it." He sighed. "He's not eating much, and at his size and metabolism rate he can't afford not to eat properly. He's training for days on end, he doesn't sleep and when he does crash, he sleep walks and talks. We can't help him, but you can. He keeps saying "Peggy". You know her, right?"
"I-I-Yeah, I do."
"Good. And thank you. I know this mustn't be easy, but I am sorry, okay? Know that. Anyway, he's gotten better since you came; he hasn't been working himself to the ground as much. He just needs closure. Think you can help him with that?"
"I-Okay."
"Great- oh shit!" Tony yelled in my ear and I winced. "Hit the code, Chrissie!"
A keyboard magically materialized out of nowhere and I punched in the numbers. The door beeped to let me out. "Shit, shit, shit!" Tony yelled again.
"What's happening?" I said, exasperated.
"SHIELD. They're faster than I thought. You have three minutes to get out. RUN!"
"Well, where the hell are you? Give me some directions!" I yelled down the phone back at him.
"Take those stairs as far down as they go," he instructed as I charged down the stairs, surprised at the speed I was able to go at.
"Wouldn't the elevator be faster?" I panted by the time I got to the 56th flight of stairs.
"No time. You're doing great, Chrissie. Just a few more," he urged me on.
"What's the deal with SHIELD anyway?" I panted as I rushed down the stairs. Serum or no serum, I still hated stairs.
"They're getting through my firewalls a lot faster than I thought. They've seriously upgraded. They'll hear everything we're saying in a minute- through that door!"He yelled, cutting himself off as I burst through the door, which was right next to the elevator on the bottom floor. I could see the streets of Manhattan teeming with people in the lashing rain through the floor to ceiling glass window.
"You know where you're going?"
"Yes."
"And you're coming back?"
"Do I have a choice?"
"Probably not," he admitted, "but I'll try to keep them occupied for as long as I can, okay?"
"Hey, Tony?"
He didn't respond for about a second and a half, because I never called him by his first name. Eventually he said, "Yeah?"
"Thanks."
"Don't mention it. Gotta go!" he said quickly and hung up the phone. I presumed SHIELD had got through, so I pushed open the door and took off at a run through the busy streets of Manhattan.
oOo
Exactly 37 minutes and several pissed off pedestrians later; I arrived, soaked to the skin with my clothes and hair stuck to me. Not very presentable looking. I looked up at the sign that read "Sunshine Rays Nursing Home." Very cheery, but not the sort of place I thought Peggy would go to. Still, since I'm here, I thought to myself. So I pushed open to double doors and went in.
So, that's that. Hope y'all enjoyed!
Until next time...
