AN: This took me a lot longer than I originally thought it would. Sorry about that (-.-")
This chapter is short because I decided to go ahead and publish a new chapter instead of making you guys wait even longer than you already had to.
So here it is...I hope you enjoy it.
Please leave a review to let me know what you thought!
A loud crash broke the silence in the room and all of the students turned in alarm, craning their necks to see what had happened in the back of the room to cause such a loud an abrupt noise.
Sasuke and Juugo were standing over their shattered basin, both of them staring in horror at the shadowy images in the quickly spreading pool of water at their feet, their bodies completely rigid.
"What on earth happened?"
Madam Casas's voice echoed her expression of horror as she began to make her way towards the two students, a handful of her skirt bunched in each of her fists as she hurried up the levels of flooring. The copper basins used for divination hardly ever tipped over and never shattered. Not unless something terrible had happened, and she drew nearer she could tell by both of their expressions that something terrible indeed had happened.
Juugo ignored Madam Casas completely as he glanced at Sasuke
Sasuke had gone pale—paler than usual—and from the expression of confused shock in his dark eyes Juugo could see that his roommate was also trying to piece together what exactly it was that they had seen.
The waters of divination do not lie. Everything you see in the waters before you are entirely probable and always happen unless directly prevented
A heavy feeling settled somewhere between Sasuke's throat and lungs as Madam Casas' words seemed to echo in his head.
If what she said was true then the person they had seen through the water had been attacked and was in grave danger…or worse
Headmaster
Sasuke lunged for the door and jerked it open all before he'd realized he had moved, adrenaline pounding in his ears as he stumbled into the hallway and headed towards the nearest staircase, hardly aware that Juugo was right behind him.
"Wait!" Madam Casas rushed to the door, hoping to hear what they had seen but she was too late. Both of them ignored her completely as they disappeared around the corner before she could say anything more to stop them.
"Sasuke, what was that?" Juugo was breathing hard as he and Sasuke rounded yet another corner of the school's extensive and winding hallways, he was confused and everything he was feeling from Sasuke was making him even more confused.
His chest was tight—making it hard to breath—and he could practically feel the adrenaline he knew was pumping through his roommate's body.
Why was Sasuke so alarmed? Was it the anima Furem? Who had they seen in the water?
"…have to— find—him…" Sasuke's words were barely audible as he gulped for air. Why was he out of breath? His lungs were already burning in his chest and his heart felt like it was going to implode. Was it because Juugo was nearby?
"Find who?" Juugo seemed fine enough despite the distance they had already covered as he easily kept pace.
"The H—"
Sasuke stopped suddenly, his answer dying off as he took a slow step back.
A crumpled figure was lying on the black marble tile at the end of the outside corridor, not fifty feet away from where they were standing, robes of a familiar deep blue velvet embroidered with stars splayed all around him.
It was the Headmaster.
"No…"
Juugo wasn't sure which one of them said it aloud as they began to move towards the body, their footsteps echoing in the hall with each step. Impossible
"placet…non mortuam—Please…don't be dead"
Juugo was barely aware of Sasuke's voice—a hoarse whisper—as he dropped to his knees beside the Headmaster and felt for the man's pulse, his large hand gently cradling the bony wrist of the aged man who had been filled with great energy only hours ago.
"He's…not dead" relief flooded through Juugo as he felt the flutter of a pulse against his fingers. The headmaster was alive
"But is he—" Sasuke bit back the question, not wanting to think about the possibilities of the headmaster—the man who cared so much about everyone—ending up just like him. A non anima.
"I…I don't know"
Sasuke clenched his teeth as something hot; something almost familiar began to burn in his chest.
This was his fault, his doing. If he had been able to defeat the Furem all those years ago…if he had agreed to the headmaster's request that morning…if he hadn't stormed out of the infirmary…
"Amicus!"
Rossa—the head nurse's voice was a gasp as she hurried towards the three figures at the end of the hallway, her soft eyes terrified as she moved past Sasuke, hardly aware of his presence, and knelt by Juugo's side.
"What happened here?" Professor Cuore's smooth tone sounded slightly accusing as he came up behind the petite form of the head nurse, his sharp eyes locked on Juugo suspiciously.
"We—Sasuke and I—were in divination when we saw the headmaster—" Juugo began as he stood up to give Rossa room to examine the headmaster's body.
"And do you have proof of that?" Cuore interrupted, taking a menacing step towards them.
"Enough, Cuore!" Rossa's tone was commanding as she straightened and turned towards the two students, her expression grave "The Headmaster is alive—but he is very weak. I think I will be able to help him…but we must take him back to the infirmary"
"Fine." Cuore turned away from Juugo and Sasuke, clearly ruffled as he gave a polite bow to Rossa "Then I shall take him there personally" He stepped forward and lifted the Headmaster into his arms, his expression surprisingly gentle as he turned and made his way down the hall.
"Thank you. Both of you" Rossa's gentle voice was soft as she hurried after Cuore, her hands anxiously twisted in her apron.
Juugo stammered a quick response, unused to being thanked directly for anything, and then turned towards Sasuke who was slumped against the stone wall of the school.
His head was hanging down, his shoulders slumped as he muttered the same words over and over
"Quid ago '? What am I doing?"
His dark eyes were fixed on the floor, a tormented expression on his face as he slowly clenched and un-clenched his fists.
Juugo automatically reached out to place his hand on his roommates shoulder, realizing barely a second later what he had done and then bracing himself for the inevitable shock that always came—but nothing happened.
There was no painful bold of energy, no blinding sensation of light, nothing. Just a feeling of sorrow. Of extreme guilt and remorse. And feeling of total emptiness.
Was this what Sasuke was feeling?
Sasuke almost jerked away in anticipation of the painful bolt of energy but then stopped, his eyes softening with gratitude as he accepted the warm gesture from the taller male.
"There's no need to worry about Headmaster, Rossa will take care of him"
Sasuke and Juugo turned at the sound of the female professor from the field's smooth voice.
Prael was standing in between the columns, her long black ponytail swaying gently as she leaned the long wooden poles she had been carrying against her shoulder.
"But that's not what is bothering you, is it?"
Her deep green eyes were focused on Sasuke and he looked up, nodding ever so slightly in response to her query.
"There's no question that some form of dark sorcery is at work here and everyone's lives could be in danger, however I would not worry. Even without Headmaster to protect the school, we professors are more than capable of fending off any threat."
She grabbed the poles again and straightened, stretching her neck back and forth before she began to walk
"Focus your mind on the things you have in your power to change and everything will work out. I will see you boys on the field."
