"Mmm" the small and groggy sound escaped my lips. I fluttered my eyes open and was about to snuggle back in to a sleeping position when I realized that I wasn't sleeping in my own bed but in my car. Startled I looked around and saw that I wasn't parked just anywhere but I was right by the a hiking trail.
With a jolt I sat up in my seat, trying to remember what happened last night. While looking around for anything that would give me a clue to what happened. That's when I saw him and I saw what I had done. A numbness began to spread throughout my body and I started to feel dizzy.
'What have I done?'
I looked at Tristan's limp body he was extremely pale and on his neck were two purple dark puncture wounds. Fear ran though my whole body, it felt like ice cold water burned in my veins. The world was spinning and without realizing it I was crying.
'Holy shit! What's wrong with me?!' I thought taking a deep breath, trying to calm myself down. 'I have to try to see if he's alright. I'm jumping to conclusion I HAVE to try.'
Hesitantly I nudged him. For what seemed like a lifetime I held my breath until he stirred and nuzzled against my arm and almost immediately I let out a sigh of absolute relief.
'Thank you.'
Now that I had made sure he was alive and well I found myself staring at him. He looked so cute while he was sleeping, he looked so at peace. I began to realize simple silly little things about him like how long his dark eyelashes are, how straight his nose is, how his lips are so...
A sound of something hitting the window makes me jolt and I snap my head to look out the window. I immediately forget all thoughts I had just had. I looked outside and was tempted to get out of the car and look but last nights conversation creeps into the back of my head making retreat in fear.
Even though the hairs on the back of my neck are standing I force my self to look around at my surroundings. The sky was still dark so it can't be too late and we parked really close to a trail to go hiking or whatever outdoors-y people do, so there is the chance it was just someone playing a prank on us. I gaze at the trees as they slightly sway with the gentle wind of the night. Over all it seems like a calm night but after the knocking noise outside the window I'm not so certain I should stick around. Honestly the longer I'm here the more appealing the idea of just going home becomes.
Looking at the cars dashboard I'm shocked when it's green numbers read 2:49 a.m. I almost laugh, it felt as if we'd been here for hours but it's only been a little over an hour. After I started driving Tristan began to wake himself up.
"What's happening?" he asked groggily.
"Do you want to go home?" I asked him instead of answering his question.
"I want to sleep."
"In your house?"
"I don't care which ever is faster."
I rolled my eyes, he was acting like such a little kid.
"Seriously Tristan" I try to say sternly but end up just sounding really gentle "I need to know if you want me to take you home." I frowned, not getting anywhere. I did want to take him to my house that way it would be easier to check his neck and make sure it wouldn't get worse.
Suddenly the feeling of arms slithering around my waist startled me almost to the point of accidentally flooring it.
"What are you doing?"
"Ya know I don't mind the idea of sleeping over" he says while snuggling into my waist.
Blood immediately rushes to my cheeks and my hands tighten on the wheel. It felt like my face neck and upper part of my chest was red and hot. My heart beat hammered in my chest.
I think that I was in some sort of auto pilot at that point and just started to drive to my house. When we got there I pried Tristan's sleepy arms from me and walked over to the passenger side of the car and started to grab Tristan. He was kind of heavy but he did walk a little so I didn't struggle too much while carrying him.
Setting him on the first couch once we were inside I tried to think about what I should do now that he was here.
'I can't believe I'm actually letting him stay at my house. If my parents or my aunt were still here, they'd flip!' I smiled at that thought, it was nice to finally stop feeling so sad about my parents and start recovering.
I went to the room where my aunt had stayed and opened the door. When I got him in there I laid him in the bed and I made sure he was covered. I even went got a blanket and draped it over his sleeping body. I stayed for a second and watched him after feeling like he was deeply asleep I left the room.
As I closed the door and I made my way out the door I saw Gabriel with his arms crossed and a stern look on his face.
"I've been keeping an eye on you and saw what you did."
This startled me and confused me.
"What are you talking about..?" I questioned trying to sound innocent. His eyes narrowed.
"You took blood from that boy." My blood suddenly ran cold and my eyes widened.
"No I didn't I-"
"Yes you did" he said, cutting me off "Why are you so reckless and stupid? You know I'm pretty sure I couldn't have been the only one that saw that."
I stood there silently, letting his words sink in. When I went to push my hair out of my face I found that my hand was shaking uncontrollably.
"I didn't mean to" I said. My voice becoming small and shaky, I sounded like a frightened little kid. I wrapped my arms around myself to keep myself from falling apart. "It just happened."
"I don't give a shit! You need to be careful!" he yelled.
"I'm serious I didn't even know I-I did that!" I couldn't bring myself to say I "sucked" his blood
"I didn't even know why I left." I half yelled half whispered desperately. I furrowed my eyebrows in frustration as I tried to force my watery eyes not to spill tears.
Gabriel gave me a strange look a mixture between confusion and embarrassment. He seemed quite taken back and looked down shyly and his eyes looked everywhere except directly at me. A long silence hung between us, I hung my head down while tears ran down my face.
"I'm going to my room" I said quietly and started to walk away.
"Hey I'm sorr-" he started.
"Whatever" and with that I entered my room locked the door walked over to my bed and collapsed onto it and falling into a deep sleep.
When I opened my eyes for the third time I saw daylight peaking though my window. I looked at my alarm clock its neon bright numbers read 6:21 it was still pretty early considering what time I usually woke up this week. Getting out of bed walked I over to the guest room, hesitating for a second, thinking he might still be asleep but decided to just knock.
After no one answered my knocks I decided to just open the door, when I took a peak inside it seemed as if nobody had been there at all. The bed was made there was nothing out of place it just seemed kind of empty in there. I even found myself getting a little disappointed that he wasn't there.
I walked away closing the door behind me feeling like the emptiness should be confined to that room only and decided to go to the bathroom and freshen up. When I was done I started walking to the kitchen when I saw Gabriel and halted in my step. It was pretty stupid of me to act so surprised to see him in the kitchen, I mean we do live in the same house.
"Good morning" he said after taking a sip of his coffee.
"Morning" I replied in a clipped tone not looking directly at him. I started to wonder if I should go to school maybe then we (more like I) could have time to cool off. I went to the cupboard and grabbed a bowl, spoon, and a box of cereal.
"Your friend left" he said.
"Yeah I noticed" I poured the cereal and some milk into the bowl and began to munch away.
Gabriel ignored me and continued. "Anyways he said that he had to go home and that he's sorry and he'll see you later." He looked annoyed and was probably thinking something along the lines of that he was being treated like message machine.
"I think I'm going to go back to school today." I said after some silence.
"I don't think that would be a good idea," he said.
"Why not?" I asked in an extremely whiny tone.
"Because we don't know if you'll do something" he said, taking a sip of his coffee then raising his glance towards me "I think it would be best if you stayed today and we figured out how to control your-" he paused as if looking for the right word "eating habits."
A fire lit up in my torso I did my best to contain the anger inside me. "I'll be fine."
He looked at me for a long time, not saying anything just staring and eventually sighed. "Alright, fine go." he said coldly while his eyes facing toward the floor.
I smiled and went to my room to decide on something to wear. I slipped on a pair of dark blue tight fitting jeans, a loosely knitted cream colored sweater then tied a burgundy scarf around my neck. I piled my hair on top of my head into a bun and put on some makeup. I slipped on a light jacket and on a pair of brown combat boots. Then I grabbed my backpack, a water, and an apple. Taking a bite of the apple, I shoved the water bottle in my bag while heading towards the door.
While I was making sure I had my keys, someone knocked on the door. Startled I hesitated to open the door, wondering who would be here so early. I quickly ran through a mental list of the people who come here which consisted of two: Gabriel, who would just walk in, and Tristan. Either way I still had to open the door.
When I opened it I was surprised to see standing there Sam with a friendly smile on his face. "Hey" he said his hands were in his pockets and-for once-he wore a shirt that clung to his chest. His hair was getting longer ... it's kind of hot oh and his-
My train of thoughts were interrupted when Sam coughed making me realize I hadn't said anything yet.
"Hello" I said.
"Listen" he said "I need to talk to you."
My heart quickened up in it's pace and my eyes widened slightly, everything I did to Tristan flooded in my head. I didn't think that things would escalate so quickly.
"Right now?" I try to keep my voice calm but I can't ignore the quiver in my voice.
He nodded his head "It's urgent but you look like your going somewhere..." he glances behind me.
"Yeah I was just going to go to school" I said sounding overly enthusiastic, I started gaining confidence in my escape.
"That's good." A silence played between us.
Then the silence broke when I sneezed ... loudly.
"Bless you."
"Thank you" I said extremely embarrassed.
'This is so awkward!' i thought to myself.
"It's Fine" a calm smile playing at his lips "Are you getting better?" he asked, his hand suddenly moved to my cheek. A gentle heat pulsed from his hand and slightly made me sleepy .
"Yeah" I couldn't help but look up at his eyes, his eyebrows were so close to his eyes they gave a intense look, it was oddly inviting though. I looked away though afraid that his eyes would be able to see right though me. I took a glance at his lips.
'They look so soft and full.' A image popped in my head of the both of us kissing 'I bet it would be nice...'
"Your face still feels a little warm but its good your getting better, I was kind of worried for you" His eyes darted back from my eye to my cheek. "Sorry" he said yanking his hand back "You probably don't like me being so touchy."
"No" I said shaking my head "I didn't mind... your hand was really warm." My face flushed when I thought back to wanting to kiss him.
"What do you want to ask me?" I asked in a serious tone.
He shook his head "Not right now it'll have to wait."
"Alright."
"See you then."
He turned and started to walk away from me in the opposite direction, my shoulder slumped I felt slightly disappointed that he had to leave so soon.
"Doesn't your school end around 3:00?" he asked suddenly turning to face me.
"Yeah" I said.
"Alright, I'll pick you up after school" before I could answer he left jogging away.
I walked toward the school and the closer I got the more I began to regret me decision on coming back. I began to wonder if I really did have a good hold on myself. What if I had a sudden burst of wanting blood in the middle of class or the hallway.
My steps started to slow down I thought about leaving right now I could run around in the forest and try to get rid of some energy. I don't even know if I got any extra abilities with this whole drinking blood thing. I also need to figure out where I going to get blood from. I might end up robbing a hospital of it's blood donations. Thinking of this made me chuckle but my mood swung back to regretful as I looked back at the building.
'This was such a bad idea...' I sighed.
I looked up and realized I was already on the school property in fact I was already on my to the entrance doors.
"Well there's no turning back now. Might as well take the bull by the horns" I said under my breath. I took a deep breath and opened the doors to the school and entered with a bit of confidence.
'I can do this.'
Once inside the school I rushed to locker to put away my jacket.
Suddenly someones arms wrapped around my body. Stiffening immediately the hairs at the back of my neck stood up.
"I missed you!" Tristan exclaimed letting go of me as I visibly relaxed, I turned toward him with my hand against my chest exhaling deeply.
"You scared me! I thought you were some weirdo" I began to laugh.
"What? Don't you recognize me" his childish tone made him sound so childish, it made me giggle.
The bell rang loudly, making me snap out of my small giggle fit. I looked at the clock above us and saw we had ten minutes to get to class.
"Do you want to start walking to class?" I asked him.
"Sure" he answered "but lets walk slowly." He smiled and my heart unexpectedly skipped a beat.
I turned away while the blood rushed to my ears. "Okay" I answered. I locked my locker and hiked my book bag up on my shoulder.
At a slowed tempo Tristan and I began to walking, talking about things that had no meaning. During this time I realized I finally had something I always wanted and was incredibly jealous when I saw other people with it, a friend. Cheesy of course, but when you're alone for awhile you miss everyday company.
Time passed at a slow tempo pace every class was for the most part boring and slightly confusing. During gym class Tristan and I hid out by the water fountains just to kill time before we'd have to run again. My math class became a jumble of numbers, and history was a whole bunch of foreign names. The only classes where things seemed to make a little sense was my English class (thanks to Tristan) and art because my teacher was more laid back and exempted me from the project I missed.
By the time lunch rolled around I felt so drained that I considered feigning a illness and taking an another week off from school.
After grabbing a lunch I walked over to the table me and Tristan usually ate at. Once I got there I practically collapsed down in my chair and placed my lunch tray down.
"You look tired" Tristan said sitting next to me while eating an apple.
"You think?" I said in a snippy tone, I raised my eyebrow.
"Are you regretting coming back to school already?" he asked in teasing tone.
"Are you kidding me?" I said " I regretted coming back the second I set foot here!"
"And to think I've been suffering this torture for longer than you."
"Don't be such a weenie," I teased sticking out my tongue. He smiled and stuck his tongue back in response.
After quietly chatting between the two of us. The bell rang and we both headed to our biology class. Secretly in the back of my mind I have been dreading this class, I knew I would have to face some news from the pack. So once we entered and I scanned the room and found that the table where me and Paul sat and when I found it empty I gave a relived sign.
"Don't look so excited," Paul's voice interrupted my thoughts.
"What?" I asked bewildered.
He set his backpack down on the table and kept his eyes low. "I'm not going to hurt you." he muttered under his breath. He looked like a dog with it's tail tucked between it's legs by the way.
I sat down and began to get out my notebook.
"Look" I raised my head and looked at him "I'm sorry ... about what happened."
I gazed into his eyes and tried to see if he was lying.
"Why are you apologizing?" I whispered not breaking eye contact.
He lowered his eyes, it made him look younger. "Because-" he was cut off by the sound of the bell ringing.
"Look, just meet me after school an-"
"Well, you see" I interrupted him "I'm not sure if that's a good idea on my part after what just happened."
"Fine. I'll tell you once she starts handing out the worksheets."
Before I could answer the teacher began talking. I turned my attention to the teacher and when she finished talking I walked to her desk and asked her what we've done the past couple days.
After getting a packet from the teacher I went back to my seat. Today was just going to be a work day and she said we could sit at labs if we wanted.
"Okay what were you going to tell me" I said once I sat down.
"I'm sorry for what happened I didn't Leah was going to do that." He paused and looked at me as if to check if I was listening.
"She had told me that she was only going to on a walk with you and try to figure if you were really a vampire. I didn't know she was going to try to drown you."
"So can you explain to me one more time why being a vampire is oh so bad" I asked while trying to hide my nervousness.
He hesitated "I'm not allowed to say why. Its something that Sam should explain to you."
"So this was all over some bullshit suspicion that I'm a vampire."
"We did have some evidence." My eyes widened slightly. "We knew when we first saw you that you weren't human. And if you weren't human then the only other explanation we had was vampire but I guess there's other things out there. Plus don't look human, your eyes change color, your scent is different your definitely not human. We also heard some rumors about your about your parents."
"My parents?" I asked what did he know about them?
"Your parents relationship wasn't ever really excepted. Everyone thought it was wrong for them to be together." He answered bluntly.
"Why?" I questioned. He's not giving me any real answers.
"Again, I can't answer that."
Ugh we're getting nowhere. "Whats with all these rules?" I muttered. "Why can't you tell me anything?" I asked.
"I just can't. I'm not in the position to tell you these things."
"Man the is bullshit. Your so stubborn." I muttered under my breath I heard him chuckle. "I'm gonna go work with Tristan. You're giving me a headache."
He rolled his eyes.
I took my stuff over to where Tristan was seated alone in at a lab table and took a seat next to him.
"Your gonna work over here?" Tristan asked smiling when he saw me.
"Yeah, I figured that you could help me with my the work sheets." I said.
"You mean copy?"
I rolled my eyes "same thing."
He nodded. I took out a pencil and began looking for answers in his stack of papers.
"Are you still gonna sit over there with him?" Tristan asked in a serious tone.
"I guess. I don't think I really have a choice. Plus" I turned to look at Paul "he seems ... apologetic."
I could see Tristan frown to my side.
"Just be careful I don't want you getting"-
"Hurt?" I smiled at him "I'll be fine. I'm a big girl I can take care of myself." I winked at him.
The rest of the hour we spent making cheesy jokes and Tristan ranted about some t.v show he was watching.
Soon the bell rang signalling that school was over.
School went by faster than I thought.
I gathered my things together and walked alongside Tristan to the parking lot.
"Hey do you want to hang out today" Tristan asked as we opened the doors that led to the outside of the school.
"Um sure I don't have any plans today"I replied. Then a tall man caught my eye I immediately recognized him as Sam.
"Oh I forgot. Um how about we hang out tomorrow, I can't today."
"Oh all right" his expression immediately changed into disappointment. "Is it cause of him?" he asked looking accusingly at Sam.
"Come on Tristan don't be like that."
"What I don't like it when your around them. Something bad always happens" he looked so worried and his eyes pierced into me leaving me at a lost for words.
"I'm sorry but I need to talk to him" I said I could feel Sam looking at us "I'll make it up to you some how okay? Maybe we can watch a movie or play video games" I smiled at Tristan.
He just looked at me and said "I'll see you tomorrow."He turned around left me standing there at a loss for words. I watched Tristan walk away his figure hunched over and was getting smaller and smaller.
Today I had somehow managed to piss off two of the only people who seemed care about me and to think that the day wasn't even over.
I turned and looked at Sam. He gave me a questioning glance but seemed to shrug it off. I took a deep breath as I began to prepare myself to meet him and I began to wonder 'What exactly did he have in store for me?'
