Chapter Twelve – Poisoned magic and S-class?

My apartment was a sad sight.

While we walked over there Laxus reassured me that the apartment was still there at least, since they all had pitched in to pay my rent when they got the news that I had died because they couldn´t stand to go through my things yet so everything should still be there.

I was going to pack the things I wanted to keep and Virgo would take them to Laxus house, then my lease would be terminated and the other stuff left behind.

But back to my apartment, everything was covered in a thick layer of dust and the smell emitting from the fridge was making me gag. Laxus had better control than I did but even he looked a little green around the gills.

I quickly packed all of my books and my novels and letters from the desk and my personal items and stuff from the bathroom, but then I hesitated when it came to my clothes. Did I really want to bring them? I liked my new style and my old clothes were nothing like what I was wearing now, they were more innocent, still untainted by betrayal.

In the end I only packed my shoes, jackets and a few selected outfits. The other clothes would be packed in a box and delivered to the guild hall were the other girls could take their pick. Then we locked up the apartment and left for the guild.

As soon as we entered the guild Bickslow was there, waiting for us to arrive.

"There you guys are… Freed finished translating the book, he´s down in the library." He told us and gestured for us to follow him which we did after I had left the box with clothes with Mira.

The otherwise very neat library in the guild hall basement was in complete disarray; it looked like Freed had searched through every single book in here and only left for food and bathroom breaks. And knowing how he could become when researching something it didn´t surprise me if that was the case…

Anyway Bickslow sat down on a chair and leaned back, making himself comfortable. Laxus pulled out another chair and sat down as well before pulling me down to sit in his lap. Ever was leaning against one of the many book-cases down here, looking bored out of her mind but her eyes held an awareness that showed that she knew exactly how important this could be for us.

Freed was sitting at the table, the entire area in front of him covered with open books and scattered papers, but somehow it seemed as if he knew where everything he needed was. He pulled an open notebook filled with his neat handwriting a little closer before he started explaining what he had found out from the book.

"I have managed to translate the entire book as you probably know; it is why you are all here after all. But I am afraid that the book tells us nothing about how to make Natsu and Lisanna normal again, it only tells us what has been done to them." He told us and shook his head sadly, as if he was disappointed in himself that the book didn´t hold all of the answers we needed.

"It´s alright Freed, Lucy´s spirits might have found a way to turn them back to normal, but what happened to them to make them like this?" Laxus told the depressed rune mage, making him brighten up slightly as he told us.

"It seems to me as if the book used to be someone´s diary where they kept their plans and thoughts written down. As far as I can tell it is a dark guild that is guilty of this mess. They call themselves forgotten ones and the book seems to have belonged to their guild master, a man named Manto. He sent the mission that Natsu and Lisanna took to us and sometime during the mission he poisoned them, making their own magic poisonous and the reason why they are acting so oddly. This Manto planted the thought in their heads that they needed to get rid of their guild member Lucy Heartfilia at any cost and that thought will remain in their minds until they can be cured from this poison."

"Why does he want cosplayer dead?" Bickslow asked and sat up straighter, his babies circling around him slowly, making worried noises.

"I´m not sure actually… It is not written down in the book but from what I can tell it might very well have something to do with her past from before she joined Fairy Tail." Freed answered and shut the notebook, signaling that he didn´t have anything else to tell us.

"What did your spirits find out about all this Lucy?" Ever asked me when she realized that none of the males was going to say anything else.

"According to my newest spirit Draco, there´s a unison raid spell I can do with him that will return the two of them back to normal. The catch is that I can´t do it at the moment because I don´t have enough magic, the spell will take at least twice as much as Urano Metria. So I need to find another key, Zelena the soul collector, she can help me unlock my second origin and then I will probably be able to do the unison raid with Draco." I explained to them all and ignored the way their eyes widened when I mentioned unlocking my second origin. I had already had that discussion with Laxus and I wasn´t going to have it again so I told them firmly.

"And before you go off on me, I know that it is dangerous and I know that it will hurt but what choice do I have? I have to help them if I can." That made them close their mouths again and since there was nothing left to talk about right now, we all helped Freed return the library to its usual neat state before going back up into the guild hall to order some lunch from Mira.

We didn´t sit down at the Raijinshuu´s usual table on the second floor but instead chose a larger one in a corner of the guild on the bottom floor so that Erza and Gray could join us if they wanted to since Natsu and Lisanna were locked away for the moment, and would remain so for as long as I was in Magnolia.

Not only did Gray and Erza join us but so did Gajeel, Pantherlily and Happy as well. Laxus, Bickslow, Gray and Gajeel went to get everyone food and I leaned back in my chair and watched how the others interacted around me, I was happy to see that my old team was getting along with the Raijinshuu.

Erza and Ever were chatting about clothes and gossiping. Freed were talking to Pantherlily about how the exceeds magic worked and why only he had a battleform out of them. Happy had been listening to them talk at first but now he was walking along the table until he reached me and jumped down to sit in my lap, cuddling up against me.

"Is everything alright Happy?" I asked him, concerned about the somber expression he carried as well as his unusual silence.

"Yeah… It just feels weird being without Natsu… I haven´t been away from him like this ever before, it´s kind of lonely in the house all by myself…" His ears dropped forward and his large eyes were suspiciously shiny so I hugged him close to myself and told him.

"I know it must feel strange Happy but I promised you that I would do everything I can to turn them back to normal and I keep my promises. But you don´t have to stay in your house all alone, you can stay with me and Laxus for now. I promised you that you could be with me don´t you remember?" A few tears fell from his eyes but he wiped them away and gave me a small smile, telling me.

"Thanks Lushy." And with that he flew over to Wendy and Carla whom had entered the guild for the first time since she´d gotten ill by her sorrow, to spend some time with them. Romeo was there and were keeping an eye on her so I felt calm about her coming here already. I looked over at Pantherlily who apparently had listened in on my and Happy´s conversation and he told me.

"I will make sure that Happy stays with you or us tonight, don´t worry about it Lucy." How he could know that I was a little uncertain if Happy were really going to show up on his own I don´t know, but I appreciated his promise nonetheless.

The others returned with our food and we all dug in happily. When the food was gone I felt extremely content with life at the moment, I was full with delicious food, I was leaning against my wonderful boyfriend/mate and his body heat was keeping me comfortably warm and I was chatting with Gajeel who were seated across from me.

"Sorry about what happened yesterday; did Pantherlily tell you what really happened?" I asked him.

"Yeah he told me and it´s cool, don´t worry about it bunny-girl. I do want to see Draco up close sometime though; perhaps he knows what happened to the dragons."

"Sure we can do that the next time I´ll summon him; it might be a few days though. I don´t want to summon him without knowing that I can rest the day after, he´s really draining to summon." I explained and Gajeel nodded, satisfied with my answer.

My attention was drawn towards the second floor where Master had appeared, gesturing for me to join him in his office. I sighed sadly but pulled myself away from the warmth that Laxus radiated and stood up, telling the others that I would be right back before leaving them and taking the stairs to the second floor. I could feel Laxus eyes on me the entire time I walked but he didn´t make any move to come with me so I had a feeling that he already knew what master wanted to talk to me about.

I entered his office a little hesitantly, still not convinced that he wasn´t going to yell at me for not coming back immediately when he hinted that my friends and guild mates were having trouble because of my death.

"Please sit down Lucy." Master told me as he himself sat down on top of his desk which was mysteriously not drowning in a sea of unfinished paperwork for once. I did as I was told before asking him.

"What did you need me for Master?"

"Do you remember me telling you about the S-class trials? That they were supposed to be held soon?" I only nodded, wondering where he was going with this.

"Well, I have decided not to hold the S-class trials as usual this year, mostly because of the situation with Natsu and Lisanna but also because there aren´t that many candidates. From the group that went through the trials at Tenrou last time Cana, Freed and Gajeel are already promoted to S-class and I have deemed that Natsu, Gray and Levy need some more experience. Juuvia said that she wanted to wait with becoming S-class until Gray could be promoted as well. The only serious candidates this year are Bickslow and yourself, Lucy." Master told me, completely serious. I waited for him to continue that thought, holding my breath in anticipation, was he going to tell me what I thought he was going to tell me?

"So because of that, I and the other S-class mages have decided to promote the two of you to S-class with immediate effect!" He told me with a big smile that after a few seconds of stunned surprise was copied on my part. Had I really become S-classed that easily?

I must have spoken that thought out loud because Master answered me as if he had read my mind and told me.

"Not easily my child, but taking into account what you have survived and how much you have improved since then I would be foolish not to promote you."

"Thank you Master." I told him and bowed my head in gratitude.

"There´s no need to thank me child, it is your own abilities that have taken you here." He said to me softly and patted my hand which bore the Fairy Tail guild stamp. I looked down at the bright pink mark and frowned, like with my clothes the mark belonged to a time where I was more innocent.

"Master… would it be possible for me to change the color of my guild stamp? With everything that has happened the pink feels… wrong. Like it belongs to a child." I asked quietly while keeping my eyes on the mark on my hand.

"Of course my child, which color would you like instead?"

"A deep midnight blue with black trim. For the night sky that is the source of my magic and for how close I came to be lost forever in the dark abyss of death and betrayal."

When I was done with Master I exited the guild hall quietly, without letting anyone know that I was leaving. Somehow I managed without alerting the dragon slayers heightened senses, though I don´t know how.

The black rim around my now dark blue stamp symbolized the darkness that I would forever carry with me deep within my soul. I guess in a way I was mourning the loss of my innocence, before all this had happened I had managed to always see the good in people and both trust and forgiveness came easily. That would not be the same now; there would always be a part of me that wouldn´t trust the other people around me, with the exception of Laxus and the Raijinshuu since they were the ones who saved me.

I walked quickly through the forest surrounding Magnolia towards Laxus cabin, I knew he was going to begin wondering where I was soon and when he realized that I had left the guild he would come looking for me. I knew I was going to worry him and I had thought about telling him that I wanted to leave, he would have come with me then, but I didn´t want the others asking what Master had wanted with me, or why I had changed the color of my stamp, the answers would only upset them.

I reached the small house that was my new home and after letting myself in with the key Laxus had given me I went straight to Laxus bedroom and entered the connected bathroom for a shower. I quickly stripped out of my clothes and stepped underneath the hot spray of water. I was happy that Master and the others had deemed me strong enough to become S-class and I planned on asking Laxus if we could take an S or SS-classed mission tomorrow with the rest of the Raijinshuu. I wouldn´t find Zelena´s key unless I looked for it and the remote places the high classed mission usually took places seemed like a good place to start.

I washed my hair and wondered silently to myself if Laxus would be angry with me for leaving unannounced but almost as soon as I had finished the thought I could hear him approach the house with the faint sound of wings accompanying him, so Happy had come with him after all… I knew that the blue exceed was missing Natsu and the thought of him alone in their house just about broke my heart. I was happy that he was here but a little worried about how Laxus felt about it, he hadn´t said anything about it but that didn´t mean that he wanted Happy to stay with us until Natsu returned to normal.

I stepped out of the shower at the same time Laxus opened the front door and I could hear him talk to Happy about something as I dried my hair and wrapped the towel around me. When he opened the closed door and entered the bedroom I had exited the bathroom and was sitting on the bed in only the towel, attempting to brush the tangles from my hair with little success since I still wasn´t used to the longer hair I now sported.

"Why didn´t you tell me you were leaving?" He asked me, his back against the now closed door and his eyes focused on my every move.

"Because I didn´t want to tell the others that Master made me S-class and because I didn´t want to explain why I changed the colors of my guild stamp." I answered him truthfully and looked up from the tangles I was trying to comb out to meet his gaze unblinking. Laxus was silent for a little while and I returned to detangling my hair until he asked me.

"How come I didn´t notice you leave then?" He looked confused and I frowned before answering him.

"I don´t know… I was expecting you or Gajeel to notice that I was leaving but you it didn´t seem as if you did. And I did nothing to try and sneak past you, I left Masters office, went down the stairs and then out the back door, I wasn´t trying to be quiet or anything…" I was being honest with him and I knew he could tell that because he dropped the subject and instead told me that Happy had indeed accompanied him here and that he was currently settled down on the couch in a nest of blankets with the promise that he was welcome upstairs with them if he was feeling lonely or had a bad dream or something like that.

"Thank you… I know that you enjoy your privacy and that you probably don´t want to have Happy here but I can´t just abandon him when he doesn´t have Natsu to care for him…" I told him with my head bowed and I could hear Laxus walking closer until I felt him settle on the bed behind me, taking the brush from my hand and gently starting to brush out all the tangles that I had been yanking at for the past five minutes.

"You don´t have to thank me, if the cat had come to me with nowhere else to stay I would have taken him in even if you hadn´t been here. I would have taken in anyone from the guild if they had just asked for my help." He told me and his quiet words combined with the calm strokes of the brush in my hair were lulling me into a state of only half awareness.

I woke up slowly, hearing only the beating of Laxus heart underneath my ear as I rested on top of him, my head on his chest and his arms wrapped around me. I blinked sluggishly as I realized that the grey light of dawn was what was lighting up the room. I could tell from his breathing that Laxus was still asleep and I stayed still as to not wake him up while I tried to piece together what exactly had happened to me.

The blush that colored my cheeks and heated my skin when I realized that I had actually passed out during sex with Laxus was probably not enough to burn him but sure as hell enough to wake him up.

"How are you feeling Lucy? I´m sorry if I went too far last night, it wasn´t my intention to make you pass out on me." I could tell from the tone of his voice that he was a little worried about my answer but even though he had told me that I could indeed take it even though I had told him otherwise at the moment, I was certain that he would have stopped if I had told him so.

"I feel fine, a little tired still and a little sore but nothing you need to worry about." I told him honestly and rolled off of him, intending to get up but was stopped by Laxus wrapping an arm around me and pulling me back until I was lying next to him again.

"Stay in bed with me please? We don´t need to get up yet do we?" He asked me and buried his face in my hair, inhaling my scent and making me giggle.

"But Laxus I´m hungry… and Happy is probably awake by now as well." I whined and squirmed as I tried to get away.

"If you promise to stay in bed I will make you breakfast in bed, anything you want and Happy can join us if he wants to." That was a deal that I couldn´t refuse so I promised him to stay in bed as long as I was allowed up to use the bathroom at least. He agreed and as soon as he left the room I went into the bathroom and did my business. Before going back to bed I pulled on a pair of panties and a t-shirt that belonged to Laxus and was ginormous on me but extremely comfortable.

After I had dressed myself I returned to bed as promised and pulled the cover over me to keep warm as I waited for Laxus to return. I could hear him moving around in the kitchen and soon I could smell the mouthwatering scent of chocolate chip pancakes and strawberry smoothie. The door opened to let even more of the delicious scents inside as Happy entered the room while rubbing the sleep out of his eyes.

"Lushy…?" He asked and looked up at me with questioning eyes. I opened my arms for him and he spread his wings and flew happily into my arms.

"Good morning Happy, what do you want for breakfast today?" I asked him as he curled himself up against my stomach.

"Can I have some fish? I haven´t had fish in a long time since Natsu stopped taking me fishing…" He asked, his voice muffled since his face was pressed into my stomach.

"Of course Happy." I promised him quietly and called out Virgo by touching her key and thinking of her. A golden glow appeared and then she was there in her usual maid outfit and pink hair, there was one thing that was different though and that was that on the bottom left of her apron was a yellow dragon sewn.

"Punishment time Hime?" She asked me as usual but I shook my head as I always did and asked her.

"No Virgo but could you please bring some fish for Happy? And perhaps tell me why there is a dragon sewn onto your clothes?"

"Of course Hime, all of us carry the symbol of the dragon since you mated with Laxus-sama and received the mate mark, since you are connected to all of us we only felt that it was right of us to acknowledge the bond between you and the dragon slayer. Anything else?" She explained to me and then pulled two fish out of seemingly nowhere to give to Happy.

"No thank you, you can go back now if you want to." I told her and with a last bow she disappeared in another shower of golden dust. Happy was overjoyed at the fish he was given and was happily munching away on it when Laxus returned with our own food and drinks.

"What did you need your spirit for?" He asked me after placing the tray with food in front of me on the bed and seated himself by my side, nuzzling his face into my neck.

"To get some food for Happy, I figured that you wouldn´t have any raw fish lying about." I told him honestly before rolling up a pancake and eating it like a roll. All three of us enjoyed our food in silence for a little while before Laxus asked me.

"What do you want to do today?"

"I was thinking about going on a mission? We could look for the soul collector key and allow Natsu and Lisanna some time out of confinement…" I stated it like a question since I was unsure if he wanted to do another mission so soon after returning to the guild.

"Sure we can do that, Freed and Ever might not want to come though since they have Mira and Elfman to think about as well."

"Hey Lushy if you´re going on a mission then I want to come too!" Happy demanded and I understood that he didn´t want to be left alone again and I understood him.

"Of course you can come Happy, let´s get dressed then and go to the guild and pick one out, I have a feeling that this is going to be a good one!" I said with a wide smile as the two males simply looked at me with small smiles, feeling happy to see me smiling truthfully again.
