Umm yeah. Sorry this took so long. I was having a spot of writer's block, even though I knew where I wanted this to go. Plus, school's been busy and I've been tired because I haven't caught up on sleep from the football game last week and I have a bunch of other excuses I could give but I don't think you care. So.
Disclaimer: This random old man told me that I was going to get shot for wearing at Notre Dame shirt when I live in lower Alabama. It was so weird. He was like, "Well, you might not if it has 'Alabama' written above it." I was like, "I'm an Auburn fan." And he was like "WELL THAT'S TWICE AS BAD." Umm, excuse me, but about have the citizens in AL are Auburn fans so shut up.
Yeah that's not really a disclaimer but I'm not sure if Steph's a Notre Dame fan or not, but I bet she isn't. Go Irish!
Best Big Brother--
Edward's POV.
I've lived in Forks for almost two weeks now and I'm still not used to it. Everything's so much…smaller than Seattle; it's weird. There aren't many people, the houses are tiny, there are no major restaurants or stores, and the school is ridiculously roomy.
But I can't complain—I'm the only one who isn't too fond. My father thoroughly enjoys working at the hospital, and my mother's crazy about the "fabulous" scenery she can photograph. And Alice is never unhappy, no matter what the circumstances are (unless they don't have her size in a particular shoe or everyone's busy and can't shop with her).
Oh well. I'll get over it. Just like I had to get over adopting Alice, and having to repeat a grade when we moved to Seattle from Chicago, and when my precious golden retriever Nessie died. I got over all that, and I'll grin and bear this. Forks is just another chapter in my ridiculously boring life.
I just wish…
I don't know. I need a girlfriend badly.
Alice is always telling me that. She claims my eyes change with my mood, and she says they've been dark since Nessie died. But she's insane; lots of people (mostly girls) at school have been telling me how lovely and light they are. So her theory can't be right.
She rolled her eyes after I explained that to her, recently. The subject came up after she commented on how Jasper Hale was "real cute."
"Silly Edward. They've never seen how light they can be." It was my turn to roll my eyes.
"I'm not kidding. If you had a girlfriend they'd be amazingly gold. I mean really, if you were in love, you'd be happy, and the whole world would seem brighter."
I thumped her arm and ran upstairs to hide before the conversation could continue further.
Besides, there weren't any dateable girls at Forks High. Either they were all ugly sluts or already taken. Or both. So I guess I'll just have to deal with it.
I absentmindedly fingered some notes on my grand piano. The notes turned into a song I'd written a long time ago for my mother on her birthday. I heard Alice walking up behind me. She wrapped her arms around my shoulder and said, "Edward?"
"Yes, Alice?"
"Did you know you're my favorite big brother ever?"
I snorted. "Well considering I'm the only brother you've had and will have…"
She sat down beside me and almost thumped me. "Whatever. Anyway…you're the best. I love you so much!" Alice hugged me tightly.
I laughed. "What do you want this time?" Her eyes widened in shock.
"Is that what you think of me? That I only shower you with compliments when I'm looking to gain something from it?"
"Yes."
She rolled her eyes. "Fine. I need a favor."
"And?"
"Can you get Bella Swan's phone number for me?"
A brief rush of fear and excitement ran through me. Bella was the one girl that fell in just the "taken" category. She was my first friend at Forks High, and she's probably the only person who doesn't bother me.
"What for?" I asked.
My sister's eyes brightened. "I want to set up our shopping date! But I don't have classes with her so I'll never be able to get it."
"You can't ask her at lunch?"
Alice shot me daggers; she must have something planned… "No."
I rolled my eyes. "Fine, whatever. What do I get out of this?"
She grinned. "You'll see."
………
I sighed, setting my stuff down in history the next day. Bella was already there, copying down the vocab words on the board.
"Morning, Edward," she said.
"Good morning. Did you have fun bowling?" She laughed.
"It was a lot better than I had anticipated. I only broke two of my father's toes."
I grinned. I heard Bella take a short, sharp breath. "Are you okay?" I asked.
"Uhh…yeah," she laughed nervously, a slight blush rising to her cheeks. "Your smile's kind of cute, that's all; the way one side comes up higher than the other."
I raised an eyebrow at her, turning to face the board. "I've never heard that before…"
"Oh. Sorry. I just…yeah…I say things sometimes…" The blush intensified. I chuckled; she looked adorable.
I didn't remember my favor to Alice until about thirty minutes into class. I gasped sort of loudly, and a few people—including Bella—looked at me. Pretending like I was taking detailed notes, I scrawled, Hey. I need to ask you something… I smoothly slipped the paper to Bella.
Okay?
Can I have your cell number? Please don't take that like I want to hook up with you…Alice wants it so she can set up your shopping date, and for some reason that only she could come up with, she can't ask you herself so she made me.
I could see her holding in her laughter as she wrote back, Wow. Sure, it's 555-8541. And I guess you can text me too…if you want.
I grinned again and folded up the paper.
………
Alice immediately called Bella once I handed her our note after dinner. She plopped down on her bed and I spun in her spinny computer chair.
"Bella? It's Alice. I'm great, how're you?" She paused. "Yeah, that's why I'm calling. I really really really really really really want to go sometime soon!" I rolled my eyes at my sister's genuine bubbly-ness.
"I'm free this weekend, but not next. When're you off work?" I wonder where she works… "Sure, this Saturday sounds fine. I think my mom wants to go visit my grandmother in Seattle the next weekend, so. Do you want to invite Emmett?"
I felt a pang of sadness. It never occurred to me that Bella's boyfriend might be going.
"Oh I see. Yeah, weddings are kind of important. I guess we'll just have to drag Edward along then, huh?" I could hear Bella's laughter. "Yay! I cannot wait. We're gonna have so much fun, right Eddy?"
"No," I said. Alice hit me.
"He's such a pessimist. Ha, okay. Tell Charlie I said hi! Bye." She shut her phone and gave me a look. "Don't tell me that you aren't excited about getting to spend an entire day with her."
My face went blank. "I don't know what you're talking about."
Alice rolled her eyes. "Get out. Unless you want to help me pick out an outfit to wear on Saturday!"
I ran.
Good? I couldn't decide if I should write in the shopping part, but I kinda need a nap so. The next chapter will have it. Review if you liked it. And if you hated it, because I want to know!
