Chapter Thirteen: Don't Try to Lie

A Blank Dimension, September 10th 1995:

A week passed quickly for Harry, with a lot of changes. The first major one was Ron. Ron had cornered him on the second day of classes, demanding to know the story behind Harry's change of behavior.

"I've just grown up a bit is all. I don't need to be such a bully all the time." He explained.

"We aren't bullies! We're just respected." Ron insisted. Harry raised an eyebrow.

"Oh really?" Harry asked.

"Yeah!" Ron said forcefully.

"When was the last time you did your own homework. Or got anything done without making someone else do it." Harry pointed out.

"I.." Ron trailed off. His features took a thoughtful look. "I don't know." He finally whispered quietly.

"Exactly. And three years from now, where will any of that get you?" Ron stayed silent. "No where. All that will happen is that people will see you as the next Lucius Malfoy. A bullying prick."

There was a moment of terse silence between them. Ron furrowed his brow, genuinely thinking about what his friend had said.

"Your right, your absolutely right." Ron said, before standing and walking toward the door of the dormitories, still frowning.

"Where you going mate?" Harry asked.

"I'm going to go talk to Ginny," and with that Ron walked out of the room. Harry was a bit hesitant the next morning, seeing if anything from the conversation stuck with him. However, that went away, once Ron told Dean and Seamus to go ahead, and took a seat next to Neville and himself. That's when he had a feeling that good things were going to come out of this. It was just a hunch.

The next change came in his grades. Lila had told him that his grades weren't great. That had been the understatement of the century. He had asked Professor McGonagall for a copy of last terms grades, and was absolutely appalled. He was barely scraping an A in Herbology and Care of Magical Creatures. There were P's in Charms, DADA, Astronomy, and History of Magic. He was getting an E in Transfiguration, although he had a suspicion that that was one part McGonagall and two parts Lily Potter that had got him that grade. But he was absolutely appalled by the the tiny letter T written next to Potions. Snape hated him in his world, and he managed to scrape a high A in his class. These simply wouldn't do, considering this was OWL year. He worked his arse off from day one, to ensure good grades this term. He consulted Hermione about it, who gave him tips on school work.

"Always do every piece of extra credit early in the year." She advised, "That way if you miss an assignment, it won't affect your grade. And always double check your work. Twice. And you might want to bring it to Professor Potter. I'm sure she would be able to find any mistakes you miss."

He followed these steps religiously, and soon found his grades improve drastically. By the end of the week, Snape had no choice but to give him an A.

One other thing that he had begun to notice was Ginny. This one wasn't afraid to talk to him, and was really funny. They had several conversations over time. She had begun to hang out with Harry, Ron, and Lila (who was absolutely ecstatic to hang out with her brother and his friends), and always had something interesting to say.

Yes, Harry's days were good, consisting of doing homework, hanging out with Hermione in the library, hanging out with Ginny and Ron in the common room, hanging out with Lila in their mother's office, and trying to ignore the way Ron looked at Lila when he, Ron, Hermione, Ginny, and Lila hung out by the lake. Nothing felt out of place in the circle, so he was very surprised when he was summoned to Dumbledore's office after dinner one night.

"Ah, Mr. Potter, sit down," Dumbledore invited when he got there. "How have you been?"

"I- I'm fine, sir," Harry stammered. "You wanted to see me?"

"Yes. I've been hearing some odd reports about you, my boy." Leaning forward, the Headmaster fixed his eyes, which were no longer twinkling, on Harry, and gave him a piercing look.

"Odd?" Harry repeated nervously.

For a long moment, there was silence. Then, suddenly, Dumbledore spoke.

"Harry, Don't be afraid to talk to me. Are you in trouble?"

Harry frowned. "Of course not Sir."

"Do not lie to me." Albus said quietly. "Whats going on?"

Harry looked at the ground. "Nothing. I'm just sick of being an arrogant prat."

Albus smiled, his clear blue eyes twinkling again. "Well Harry, I must say that you have improved greatly. Even Professor Snape semi tolerates you now!"

Harry looked up and stared at Dumbledore before bursting out laughing. Soon Albus joined him and the two men laughed together for quite sometime.

It was close to an hour later when Harry meet Hermione in the library. "Well? What did Professor Dumbledore want?" she inquired curiously.

"He thought something was wrong" Harry said smiling.

"Why?"

"The teachers noticed my 'strange' behavior," Harry told her chucking. "I guess I wasn't doing a very good job of acting like the Harry from here."

"That's a good thing," Hermione assured him. "I l-like you a lot better this way."

"Thanks," Harry sighed, grinning fondly at his friend. "I don't know what I'd do without you as a friend."

"Die?" Hermione asked, with a smirk. Harry's eyes widened in mock-shock.

"Attention everyone!" Harry said just loud enough that Ron and Neville, who were sitting in front of them heard. "The world is about to end. Hermione Granger just made a joke."

Ron gasped "No!". Neville just laughed, while Hermione giggle-hit Harry with her Charms textbook. Things would be alright, for now.
