Libra POV
What was this girl doing to me? Fang must've given her the idea. I struggled against the girl's grip. The girl complained and told me to quit. I listened, if she was Fang's family I didn't want her mad at me. The girl pulled me into a room and sat me on a stool in front of a mirror. I got a chance to see what I really looked like. I was much worse than I had thought.
"Okkaayy, Libra. Let's make you wonderful. I'll just trim your hair," the girl babbled," and clean your face. You can borrow one of my outfits, so you can get out of that whitecoat dress. You are gonna need a shower. Here I'll get you clothes, and you go take a shower. Bathroom's across the hall."
I stood and crossed to the door. I turned back, as I thought of something.
"Um, what's your name?" I asked the girl.
"Oh, I'm Nudge. We named ourselves, did you name yourself? I like your name, it's pretty-"
"Um, thanks." I cut the girl off, not wanting her to ramble again.
I slipped into the hallway, finding it deserted. I took a quick shower and when I got out I found a fresh cotton tee shirt and jeans awaiting me. I slipped into them gratefully. My hair was wet and hung limp. When I came out, Fang was in the hall. He looked at me, and his mouth curled a bit. He chuckled.
"You already look better, you smell like strawberries. Definetly better than filthy lab smell." he said, wrinkling his nose.
I laughed, and continued to Nudge's room. She was waiting for me, she grinned. She motion to the stool and I sat, much more relaxed. She used a scissors to trim my damp hair. She brushed some light makeup by my silver eyes, which she admired for like an hour. When Nudge finished, I wasn't sure it was the same girl looking at me in the mirror. My hair was now it's natural color, chestnut with dark ebony streaks. My silver irises stood out wonderfully. Nudge had noticed my bare feet and supplied a nice worn pair of green sneakers to go with my forest green 'Save trees, no homework' t-shirt and the distressed jeans I wore.
"Thank you so much, Nudge. You are an artist." I said, hugging Nudge.
She giggled and told me to show the others. She scurried past me to go to the living room.
"They're all in here. Come on, 'New' Libra!" I heard Nudge call to me.
I snuck to the hall and walked into the living room like it were nobody's buisness. Fang and the little boy's jaws dropped. The young girl clapped loudly. Nudge beamed, proud of herself. Max shook her head and smiled at me. Iggy lifted his head and found his way to me as he weren't blind.
"Can I see? Please?" he asked softly.
I couldn't help but notice everyone's gaze fall on Iggy and I. I cleared my mind and took a breath. I ordered Iggy to close his eyes, then closed my own. I placed my palms on each side of Iggy's head, then I envisioned the girl in Nudge's mirror and sent the thought to Iggy. I heard him gasp and I knew it'd gotten there. I removed my hands and opened my eyes. iggy had a huge grin on his face.
"Your eyes are my favorite part," Iggy said," I don't feel so bad bout mine then."
I looked at Iggy's unseeing eyes, they were a cloudy light blue. They weren't looking at me, more so through me. I felt bad for Iggy, to see was my life.
"Don't feel bad for him, he gets on as well as- sometimes better than- the rest of us." said the little girl with the blonde curls.
I jumped, had she just read my mind?
Yes, a voice said in my head, I read your mind. That's my special power. I'm Angel, by the way.
Max started laughing and asked if Angel was in my head. I nodded, completely lost.
"Don't worry, you'll get used to it," said the little blonde boy, who looked like Angel," I'm the Gasman, don't ask why. You'll find out, call me Gazzy. I'm Angel's brother."
I smiled at him, but I walked past the entire Flock and leapt off the balcony. I controlled and coaxed the wind to hold me aloft. I let the winds push and pull me toward the ground. I ended rolling to a stop, I'd really have to work on my landings.
Fang POV
Fang sighed. He watched Libra run off, he turned to Max who sighed and nodded.
"I'll go get her." he mumbled.
Then he too flung himself into the air, snapping out his wings. He flew keeping his head down, scanning the ground for Libra. She had said she was no good at steering, so he guessed she have landed fast. Not bothering to actually fly much.
Then, he spotted her down below. One he'd hidden in quite a few times. He angled downward and dove to the tree.
Libra POV
I was sitting in the tree, feeling overwhelmed by the Flock when he landed beside me. I nearly fell from the tree with surprise, he caught me though. I hated screwing up more than once in front of the same person.
"So, come here often?" he asked.
I scowled at him, totally not in the mood for jokes. I touched the tree with my hand and influenced the vines to grow over my feet to hold me steady. Fang looked slightly shaken by my casual use of my power.
"Sorry, Libra. What's up? You left."
"I know I left!" I snapped, then I softened my voice," Sorry, bent up confusion, anger, and sadness. Not exactly a wonderful combo."
"What's with the emotion conflict?" Fang asked, sounding concerned.
"It's just...well," I paused, fixing my words in my head," I think you and the Flock are great, but I miss my friends and my mom. And, well, I sorta wanna blow those whitecoats to bits for stealing my life away. You guys in the flock remind me too much of home."
"What's your home like?"
"Well, home is great. I lived in Iowa, with my parents and my brother. My brother is like Gazzy, that's why I left. He made me think of home and it was just too much."
"What about Iggy? How can he see you when you do that ritual thing?"
"Oh, that. That's a game I used to play with Laron, my friend. Iggy looks a lot like him, I guess it was second nature to help Iggy see me. The game was Laron tried to guess what I was thinking, I gave him clues with the visions."
"But, you had friends before the School. How-"
"I've always had the vision thing, I don't fully understand it yet."
"Oh," Fang thought a bit," What are your friends like?"
"Hmm, well, there's Beth. She a lot like Nudge, except she's... er... white." Fang smiled at this," And there's Matt, he's real smart. We thought alike all the time. Those were my only real friends, I had a lot of enemies, cause of the whole freakish mind thing."
I smiled, but it wasn't returned. I lowered my head, staring at the ground. Fang stared into space for a moment, I didn't even know if he was listening. Suddenly, he turned to me, his eyes almost fierce.
"Who do I remind you of?" he snarled.
"No one," I said softly, trying to hide my fear from him," you're like nothing I've ever seen before. You're unique. I'm really glad you're the one that found me."
Fang's fance softened instantly, he looked almost ashamed. I reached over finally and touched his arm. He sat still for a while then turned to me. I whispered, "Can I show you something?"
He nodded, silently closing his eyes. I cleared my mind, more more difficult with Fang. I put my hands on his unruly hair, and projected my thoughts to him. I envisioned how I first saw him. Walking toward me, like an avenging angel. his cold bottomless eyes, that I swore saw to my core. I envisioned flying past him, admiring his huge dark wings. I projected the fact that I wished I had wings. I pulled my hands away, ending the thought. Fang stared at me, his expression thouroughly unreadable. He sighed and turned away.
"Fang, what's wrong?" I murmured.
"I feel bad for you, you had real life. You had it stolen from you. Us bird kids never had a real life, been like this all our lives. You could be in Iowa,"he murmured back, still avoiding my eyes," with your real friends. You could have lived normally. We can't"
"Stop," I said strongly," don't say you feel bad. I like who I am now better than the old me. Libra wasn't my name before, the whitecoats gave me it, cause I was in balance with nature. My real name is... Valla."
I waited for Fang to laugh at my stupid name but he stayed serious. He seemed, again, lost in thought.
"That's a beautiful name. Why didn't you say that was your name?" Fang finally said softly.
"Because, I don't want my old name. Home wouldn't be the same, I'm a freak now. It'd be so much harder, and I don't think I could go back anyway. No one would want me." I realized I had said more than I meant to.
"Why can't you go back?"
"I broke my own heart." I whispered, my eyes tearing.
Fang seemed to realize i didn't want to say more. He wrapped an arm around my shoulder and I leaned into his, though it didn't seem like something a guy like him would do. I sighed, wishing I could stay like this.
Fang POV
Ok, I know I'm not usually a real talkative guy, Fang thought, but this girl really needed to let it all out. She was a time bomb waiting to blow.
It felt kinda good to let her rest against him, he had to admit he was a little shaken by her vision. She'd been scared of him. He'd felt her fear of him. He was trying to show her that there was absolutely nothing to be afraid of.
He thought she was probably a year younger than him, more or less, but she still seemed like a little kid to him. That's when Fang saw Max's silohette at the balcony, she was watching them.
Fang, he heard Angel's voice, Max says you should come home now.
Ok, coming. he sent back. He saw Max disappear again.
"Hey Lib. Max says we'd better come back. Come on, up and at 'em." Fang said softly, gently moving his shoulder.
Libra pulled her head away and nodded. Fang leaned forward to jump from the tree first, but Libra beat him to it, doing a neat flip to the ground. She turned and smiled at Fang. Fang smiled back, happily.
Max POV
Max saw Fang grin back at Libra, and her blood boiled. He never, ever, smiles and now this wacked girl pops up and he's all talkative with her. Max didn't understand. She saw the girl flip from the tree branch, landing neatly. So, you can do that, she thought, but you can't land flying right once?
Max, Angel said in her head, Libra's nice. Don't be mean, please. She needs our help.
Max turned and snarled at Angel, who sat on the floor behind her. Max retreated to her room, knowing well that Angel would tell Fang of her thoughts. Probably, Libra too.
So, there you have it. Some of Fang's sweeter side and Libra's past in vague detail. Please review, it'd mean a lot. Let me know what you think! Thanks so much!
